This was better than I expected. It wasn't a deeply layered, psychological masterpiece like some Real World Tag League matches you may be familiar with. Instead, it was four dudes trying to have a decent match. I tend to like the Mutoh vs. Kawada match up, so I focused on that instead of lamenting what All Japan had become. There were a shit ton of photographers at ringside, which seemed to pen in the wrestlers a bit. I was surprised by how often all four guys were in the ring instead of guys fighting on the outside, but the match was thoroughly decent especially compared to the shit show in the AJW final.

Nearly impossible to go wrong with a bloody lucha brawl. Many of them are formulaic, but it's a winning formula. This one is particularly famous because of the amount of blood and it's true, Santo's head leaves puddles of blood all around the place. Screwy finish but it's a really interesting twist. ****

GHC Heavyweight Champion Jun Akiyama vs Vader - NOAH 12/9/01

Not at the Budokan but a pretty big event at 12000 with a GHC Tag Title match on the undercard pitting No Fear against Misawa & Y. Ogawa. I believe this must be Vader’s last major title shot, he looked shaky to start but once he gained momentum he looked great. This is Akiyama’s second title defense and he would be looking at main eventing the New Japan Tokyo Dome show on January 4th against Yuji Nagata.

Beginning saw Vader just stand & bang. Akiyama held his own but any time he tries to pick up the Mastodon he paid for it. He tried to go up top to utilize gravity to his advantage but ended up getting clobbered to the floor. Vader looked great down here big shots and dropping Akiyama abdomen first on the railing but Akiyama came back throwing Vader on a table and attacking his right arm with a chair. Going to the outside definitively kicked this match up. Akiyama Worked the arm. Vader hit a ridiculous German Suplex to turn the tide. He basically launched him without falling back it was insane. Great spot Akiyama elbows the injured arm to break the grip but his good arm Vader clubs him. Vader works Akiyama’s abdomen on the outside. Scorpio is coaching up Vader audibly yelling “work the stomach”. Vader obliges. Perhaps Vader would have anyways but this guaranteed sound psychology. He was burying the fists in the breadbasket. Wicked front Suplex. Great selling. Insane Saito Suplex. Vaderbomb had great heat. Vader looks to take him up for the Powerbomb but Akiyama DROPKICKs the knee. He goes full Mutoh; Dragon Leg Screw and a rope-assisted Shining Wizard. Exploder! Guillotine but can’t cinch it in and Vader clubs him to get out. Vader is going for the Vadersault but Akiyama POWERBOMBS Vader! Wow! Vader throes a desperation bear paws out. Wild Vader chokeslam! Akiyama kicks out at 2. Vader goes for a super chokeslam but Akiyama wriggles into a cross-armbreaker.Exploder no go OO-SOTO-GARI! Cross Armbreaker wins it!

Love Akiyama winning with something besides an Exploder or Guillotine Choke. Vader once he got rocking and rolling, looked like the killer grizzle bear he is. Loved him swinging bear paws to get out of trouble and set up his power offense. Vader still had it this late. Misawa and the boys have a formula that just works in how they accentuate their high spots and their transitions matter. ****

Shinya Hashimoto & Naoya Ogawa vs Mark Kerr & Tom Howard - Zero-One 12/9/01

Skipping Zero-One’s fifth I didn’t recognize the foreigners and it looks like it was a commercial flop (2000 in Budokan OUCH!). Watching the pre-match hype this is the first time Hashimoto & Ogawa team after their long, torturous rivalry. I am surprised they didn’t cash in on one more Hashimoto vs Ogawa match before going down the dream team route. They are continuing the UPW feud with Mark Kerr somehow continuing to be roped into this. Tom Howard is pretty good, very athletic, he was the big bumper and mover of the four. With the right gimmick, he could have been a solid mechanic. Kerr is the ultimate wrestle-fuck wrestler and it is a lot of fun. Ogawa and Kerr present such a cool match up.

These matches tend not to be too narrative heavy so the work doesn’t really stick with me. Ogawa vs Kerr was a lot of fun. Kerr weathers an early Ogawa storm and shows he can take the big man down. Hashimoto & Howard present a very different alternative with Howard throwing wild high kicks and using eye takes while Hashimoto works the leg in conventional manner. I love Howard’s scramble arm crawl out of the ring to avoid Ogawa. Ogawa two pancakes on Kerr and then into a really nice Judo throw was cool. The next thing I remember was Ogawa in control of Howard and Kerr breaking it up. The Japanese end up on the heels. Then it looks like Hashimoto and Ogawa are going to break up right then and there about ten minutes into the match. I remember Hashimoto shoving Kerr head first into a post really hard. Hashimoto working some solid takedown defense including that knee when Kerr shoots for a takedown but succumbing to the belly to belly into a cross-armbreaker but Ogawa saves. Again the memory gets a little hazy here but the finish run is pretty awesome. Next thing I remember OGAWA SPACE TORNADO OGAWA ON KERR! Double leg takedown by Kerr, Triangle by Ogawa, wait now Kerr is trying to make Ogawa eat his knee. Hashimoto needs to save twice. Hashimoto DDTs Kerr twice. He goes for the Triangle/armbar but Howard hits a crazy top rope elbow. Howard should’ve gotten a run somewhere. Great three move finish combination. Ogawa/Hashimoto version of total elimination (STO with Hashimoto’s leg sweep) on Kerr, lariat into a German it looked like Kerr and Hashimoto might be out. Ogawa detains Howard and Hashimoto chokes Kerr out which is surprising I thought Howard would’ve taken the fall.

Not the stickiest of matches (match sticks with you) but the finish run rocked and I loved Ogawa/Kerr’s interactions so this an easy thumbs up. ***1/2

AJPW Triple Crown Champion Keiji Muto vs Tatsumi Fujinami - NJPW 12/11/01

This is the type of match that is so underrated. It is that mid-tempo rocker that you can just vibe and cruise too. It is never gonna be a banger or a 5-star classic, but it so damn satisfying and you can just cruise with the match. It is a lost art to have a match this simple but so appetizing.

Terrific mirror match between these two. If Hashimoto is the heir to Choshu, I always felt there was a connection between Fujinami and Muto. Both a little undersized and aerial. Fujinami obviously a much better technical wrestler and Muto had more theatrics. I really love their 1991 match where Muto was in the Great Muta role. Feels like perfect 90s New Japan match. I love how they organically build from the typical New Japan amateur wrestling into such a rousing finish run. It is cool how they just take what the match gives them rather ham-fisting highspots. Muto gets the power driver elbow. He was looking for the Back Handspring Elbow and Fujinami goes for a choke. Muto breaks free and goes to his 2001 formula. He executes a Dragon Leg Screw on the Dragon. Fujinami brutha I invented that game. Hits the Dragon Leg Screw back and Figure-4s Muto (Muto screaming fuck three times helps a lot). It was brilliant. I was hooked. The rest of the match is a terrific showcase of how to do a symmetrical match (read lots of mirrored leg work). Muto keeps trying to play Fujinami's game working the leg (dropkicks to the knee, Dragon Leg Screw) but it backfires on him (he goes for figure-4, but Fujinami counters beautifully into a leglock). Fujinami is wrestling a brilliant defensive match. He throws in a Kappou Kick after a dropkick to the knee and that seems to help. Then a dropkick to the knee from the middle rope, but he leaves his feet one too many times and Fujinami throws him off with a DRAGON LEG SCREW! Fujinami hit a top rope kneedrop! Fujinami back to the figure-4! MUTO FRANKENSTEINER OUT OF NOWHERE! Shining Wizard Blocked! FUJINAMI SHINING WIZARD! CROWD AND I LOSE OUR COLLECTIVE MINDS! Fujinami goes back up top...TOP ROPE SHINING WIZARD BY MUTO! Muto hits a barrage of Shining Wizards to win!

Terrific Lo-Fi match! That builds out of their chain wrestling into dueling leg work and then finally into the insane Shining Wizard barrage! Love it! ****

[2001-WWC] Konnan vs Fidel Sierra

Joined in progress and with Konnan in charge. Not for long though as Sierra low blows him. He locks on a crossface, although compare this to how Chris Benoit applies the same hold. ‘The Crippler’s’ looks like it hurts a ton with the way he wrenches you back and the torque he applies, this one, with how they’re both practically lay flat out on the mat, doesn’t one bit. Anyway, Konnan reaches the ropes for the break. Sierra’s knife edge chops fire K-Dawg up and he switches positions with him to unload with some of his own. He ducks to the outside to grab a flag to use but is met out there by his opponent. Back inside, Sierra is too slow climbing the turnbuckles and gets grabbed and slammed to the mat. Ref bump on a leapfrog spot. Konnan locks in the Tequila Sunrise submission, however lets go of the hold when he sees Fantasy, Sierra’s valet, entering the ring. Tequila Sunrise on Fantasy! Sierra picks up Fantasy’s purse that she had dropped and clobbers Konnan in the head with it. He makes the cover and picks up the three, the ref having missed all the shenanigans that led up to it.

The kind of match that wouldn’t have looked out of place on WCW TV in the mid-90s. Only there is not a hope in hell’s chance Sierra would’ve got the win if it had have done!

[2001-WWC] Abdullah the Butcher vs El Nene

The action is joined in progress, although it looks to be from a different source than the majority of WWC that we have. Abby is laid on the floor as we join, bleeding like a stuffed pig with Nene beating and choking him. There are puddles of his blood on the floor and it’s pretty disgusting. Two minutes in he finally gets up to his feet. They brawl their way around ringside and as Abby starts to swing a baseball bat, someone, who I can only presume is Nene’s second, powders him. That stops the Butcher, although only briefly, and it’s not too long before he’s back on top, whipping Nene with a chain. Abby pulls out a fork, jabbing it into Nene’s forehead busting him open. The Butcher’s second heads off to the dressing room, returning with a guitar. That gets broken over Nene’s head and then what remains, over the referees. With his opponent taken out of the game he makes a beeline for that second who powdered him earlier, jabbing and bloodying him with the fork. Nene and his buddy have had enough, deciding to retreat to the back, Abby celebrating the moral victory by dancing away and playing a baseball bat like it’s a guitar!

Bloody and one of the better Abby efforts that I’ve watched in this project.

[2001-12-14-CMLL-Sin Piedad] Emilio Charles Jr vs Shocker (Hair vs Hair)

Triple H, eat ya heart out! Shocker entered this match dressed as an Egyptian Pharaoh while Emilio came to the ring dressed like Caesar. After a fairly lackluster build up, this was about as good a match as you could have hoped for. It was smartly laid out with three solid falls. After weeks of running away from Shocker, Emilio went on the offensive and was the aggressor early on, which I liked. They dealt with the Babe Richard problem in the most WWF way possible w/ Shocker taking him out with one of his signature moves. Usually, I'd bitch about that sort of thing, but they made it work. Richard was replaced with a tecnico ref, which Emilio immediately latched onto during the post match. There was a lot of great work from the seconds in this match and everyone was on their game performance wise. One of the smart things about the match was that it constantly highlighted Shocker's athleticism as opposed to his rudoism. So, it wasn't a surprise when he cut a face promo afterward. Emilio getting his beautiful locks cut was quite the sight. I really liked this match. It was the CMLL equivalent of a smart WWF main event. Good stuff.

I can't find the hair matches anywhere, but we do get this fun return match. It's the holidays season, so the match is interspersed with clips from the year's best vignettes. It's been a fun year. We get Stone Cold Porky and Stone Cold Emilio Charles, Jr. in this bout. Emilio tries to wrestle with a beanie on, which is cute. Black Tiger remembers he has issues with Black Warrior, which pleases me. It's the holidays and the regular crowd don't seem to be there, so this is a bit of fun before everyone goes back home to their families. And that's how the year wraps up for CMLL, arguably the best company in the world in 2001.

I didn't expect them to have this match so soon after the PPV. The first fall was a super serious title match fall. During the second fall, the rudos began doing nasty things to the tecnicos and the tecnicos finally unleashed the can of whoop ass they'd been saving. The third fall was a bit of a mess. They teased a lowblow finish, which would have sucked, before the tecnicos got their win back from the PPV. This wasn't the match I was hoping it would be. It felt rushed and came too soon after the PPV. It would have made more sense to run it in the New Year, I would have thought.

This is the only match I can find from the PPV and it's the one I least wanted to see. I guess I'm the only person on the internet who's interested in Tarzan Boy vs. Porky and Shocker vs. Emilio (not to mention Atlantis vs. Wagner in a trios.) Juventud comes to the ring with his face painted like Damian 666, which makes sense. Then Rey enters with his face painted black.... okay... not one of Rey's more memorable nights. I guess he was trying to look like Hombre Sin Nombre, whose mask was completely black, but I can't imagine he looks back on the decision too fondly. Luckily, these guys saved their best match for the PPV. It had kind of a unique structure in that the tecnicos got all their best shots in during the first fall. The rudos controlled the second fall and got a big win in the tercera. I really liked the booking here. I haven't enjoyed La Familia de Tijuana's matches, but at least the angle hasn't been for naught. The focal point here was some vicious brawling between Casas and Nicho. Casas was great in this match. He hasn't done enough in 2001 to be in the running for Lucha WOTY, but when he's given a big match he's clearly up there with Santo and Panther. He had some good exchanges with Juventud as well, which was cool because that was the beef that started Juventud's rudo turn. They did this cool angle afterward where La Familia de Tijuana were cutting promos at ringside and Casas got upset and kicked Juventud through the ropes. That made me want to see a Santo/Casas vs. Juventud/Nicho match, bad.

[2001-NWA Wildside] Bob Sapp vs Onyx

This was uploaded to YouTube, I’m assuming by an official Wildside account, although it has no date bar a Friday night show in 2001. Wrestlingdata only has a handful of results for Sapp in Wildside, the majority of which are in January, so the best bet is that this is from the same month. It will certainly be from the first few months of the year anyway, when Wildside was used as a developmental territory for WCW, where the Power Plant trainees and guys like 3 Count, Jindrak, O’Haire etc. would work house shows to get more experience. Onyx isn’t the tallest as it is but he looks like a midget next to Sapp. He tries to charge him but gets levelled by a bad looking clothesline. “Beast, Beast, Beast” chant for Sapp. After bouncing off him Onyx calls for a time out and starts dancing, Sapp doing the running man in response. Blimey, dance contests in 2001! A dropkick to the knee takes Sapp off his feet, Onyx then stomping and repeatedly kicking away at him. He does make a cover but gets pressed off with authority. Sapp gets back up and the end is nigh, a clubbing overhand dropping Onyx followed by a pair of elbows and finally a falling headbutt.

I’m sure it was inevitable that Sapp would have eventually made it to WCW TV, although on the evidence of this who knows when that would be. He’s got bucket loads of charisma but he’d be the worst guy on the roster by someway based on what we saw here.

[2001-IWA-PR-Impacto Total TV] Ricky Banderas vs Tiger Ali Singh

Taken from Impacto Total television and the action already underway. Dutch Mantel is managing Singh and he’s doing a full on Arab gimmick complete with traditional clothing and turban. It’s so strange to see and a 180 from the Western ‘Dirty’ Dutch we’re used to. Banderas blocks a powerbomb on the wooden floor and then picks up a chair Singh had originally used against him, bringing it down across his back. The crowd were hot for that. Back in the ring Singh is on his knees pleading for mercy. Banderas misses a high frog splash off the top. Dutch passes his man a second chair but before he gets a chance to use it Banderas dropkicks it into his face and small packages him for the win. Mantel attacks Ricky after the match, his shots have no effect whatsoever though, and he ends up trapped in a Scorpion Deathlock. Zarruxx the Mummy and someone I don’t recognise comes to Dutch’s rescue leading to a shirt and tie wearing Victor the Bodyguard out to help Banderas. Victor ends up busted open, the four on two odds too many, his white shirt getting covered in blood. Chicky Starr manages to placate things seemingly having a foot in both camps. I don’t speak Spanish so have no idea what he and Victor are saying to each other, however even not understanding the language Chicky is engrossing with his delivery, especially when he wipes Victor’s blood down his own face for some reason.

Yoshida stretches out a young girl on debut. Well, they said it was her debut but perhaps they meant her television debut as she'd been wrestling on the house shows for about a year. Yoshida used an assortment of cool submissions and all I could think about was how poor we were for not having constant Yoshida singles matches throughout 2000 and 2001. Apparently, Yamagata went on to have a lengthy career. I have no idea who she is.

[2001-12-02-AJW] Manami Toyota & Yumiko Hotta vs Kaoru Ito & Momoe Nakanishi (Tag League The Best Final)

This was the yusho for the Tag League The Best '01. Definitely not the best final in the tournament's history. It was mostly a set up for the Hotta vs. Ito cage match (a match I have zero interest in watching.) There was this long stretch where Hotta dragged Ito around Korakuen while Toyota stood on the apron. WTF? I hate the Korakuen balcony spot. Has any Joshi pro-wrestler ever been thrown off the balcony at Korakuen Hall? No? Then stop teasing it. They actually dropped a pair of scissors into the crowd from the balcony, which was as stupid as the brawling. Back in the ring, Toyota and Momoe traded some decent near falls, but Toyota and Hotta ended up winning the tournament. Really? Looks like the AJW renaissance has gone off the rails like everything else in 2001. This would have been much more interesting if it had been Momoe & partner vs. Ito & partner. Toyota and Hotta added nothing. That revisionist push about Hotta in the GWE was madness. 80s and early 90s Hotta, maybe, but she was god awful in 2001.

What is with Jericho dying part of his hair red? I haven't paid attention to The Rock since he had that feud with Benoit that I liked. Jericho is a heel now? What was the point of all that effort getting him over as a babyface? I don't understand 2001 WWF at all. I haven't checked out the series between these two but this seemed better than the Austin/Angle match. Ross and Lawler took great delight in talking about Whipper Billy Watson, Gene Kiniski and Paul Boesch. This really is a strange pay-per-view. Overbooked finish that works up until the low blow and disappointing finish. If I were a fan at the time, I would have been expecting Austin vs. The Rock.

This unification business led to some strange commentary where Ross mentioned Gotch vs. Hackenschmidt, the King's 1988 AWA title victory and Lou Thesz in the same breath. Later on, he mentioned that Austin worked in WCW from '91-94. I thought wrestling wasn't supposed to exist outside of the WWF? This was face Austin vs. heel Angle, not that you can tell from the match. This would have made for a perfectly good television match, but it was well short of PPV standards.

Jeff seems to be pretty good at creating momentum and space for his stuff which is one of the most important things for a WWE babyface. The Whisper In The Wind is a pretty logical counter to have with common irish whips are in WWE. It's like Choshu's Backdrop counter to the Headlock-I can see why some would dislike it but guys are going to go for it in every match so might as well have a ready counter for it. I do need to think of a way to explain how Triple H's Back Body Drop counter is different. Test is a guy whom you see discussion about in terms of missed opportunities, being screwed over by the Triple H-Stephanie real life relationship etc. but I don't remember actually hearing an opinion about him as a worker. I liked the Clothesline cut off to Jeff's jump off the barricade, his Big Boot looked good and he hit the ref with a pretty good right hand. Thumbs up! **3/4

So yeah, this was FUCKING LEGIT FUN AS FUCK. It's a hardcore match for the hard-ore championship.

The build up video is great too showing Taker beating up J.R and cementing his heel turn.

HOLY FUCK~~~~~!!!!!!

I know this match was rather great and a hidden gem but lordy did I enjoy revisiting this one. Taker has just transformed into 'Big Evil' and this was his first PPV match in thst incarnation. They fight all around the arena, using all sorts of weapons and RVD hits several big spots including diving off of the balcony and generally flying all over the shop.

Fun as fuck and despite losing, I though it still come out making RVD look good in that he had his fair share of offense in tgis and more than contributed to making it the match it is. These two meshed well and Taker already fitted nicely into his new persona.

Love how it starts out with RVD trying to hit and run his way around Taker. He does a great whirl off the too rope and he gets some nearfalls as he takes it to Taker until Taker dumps him over the ropes with a big boot.

Then it's mainly a super ass brawl all over the arena with Taker in control punishing RVD, who uses all his flying and hard-core skills to time his hope spots and try and inflict damage on Taker. Forget wrestling, this is just a wonderful, fun brawl that is just fun to enjoy. Keeps the pace fast too throughout and is a total blast.

Probably still under appreciated to a lot of fans who have simply forgotten about it.

[2001-12-09-JWP] GAMI vs Azumi Hyuga

This is one of my favourite joshi matches. I can't really do it justice. Joshi fanatics will tell you GAMI isn't that good, but I love her. Tall, awkard girl with a big belly and completely sullen and melancholic face that is like carved from a rock who can go like a motherfucker is an awesome wrestling character. Lifelong undercarder pushing beyond his limitations vs. established star is one of my favourite match types and GAMI does some really brilliant wrestling here. Gami uses her lucha technique and just totally outclasses Hyuga. Really, there wasn't a single move in this bout GAMI did that didn't rock. Includes the most memorable use of a face rake ever. It's a Hyuga match so it also has the fast pace, brutal skull crushing knee attack moves and headdropping suplexes for you workrate addicts to sink your teeth into. Still, GAMI.
