  1. Can we stick to pro-wrestling only and leave the Covid shaming and hysterics for Reddit?
  2. That's a tough fucking read. As horrible as it is for a family to lose a quality husband and father way too soon, at least it sounds like his family will be well taken care of.
  3. The fact that the cause of death being covid or not is such an issue just shows how much this situation has broken people's brains. This Bruce Mitchell shit might be the worst I've seen.
  4. I've been thinking he has something for a couple of months now. He has a certain intensity and in-ring execution that really works. And boy oh boy is he getting the rocket strapped to him, with the battle royale performance and now teaming with the top guy in the company. Good for him, and good on AEW for really committing to making new stars.
  5. The same justification as Jim Cornette wishing death and torture on people who don't treat pro-wrestling "properly" would be my guess.
  6. I think the idea with OC is for him to be the super popular mid-carder than can assist in drawing ratings/revenue but never to be a serious main-event guy. To achieve that, he needed to win because with his gimmick he is hardly going to be seen as "cool" if he just loses all the time (and before the Jericho win he pretty much was losing every big match). The Matt Hardy stuff was egregious. Just call off the match. The AEW audience, and really any audience, should understand if a match is called off due to a real-life injury. Call it off, and change the future booking, it's not a big deal. Agree that the Elite story line should have had a bigger progression on this show. It was essentially just teased at more, albeit in a more blunt manner. I like the slow-build stuff but there is a point where it becomes too slow. The Sydal thing was tough to watch but not totally unexpected. I don't know if it was directly related, but there were some botches in the Bucks match due to the ropes being too tight. In the next match they were clearly looser, and looked a bit too loose. Sydal botched because his foot was on the turnbuckle and it moved significantly when he jumped. I don't know if the rope tightness was relevant at all, but they should definitely look at how those turnbuckle pads behave.
  7. It would be nice if we could avoid the age-old confusion between explanation and justification here. If Meltz was saying the match should have been stopped, that is his opinion. Saying that the doctor clearance was the reason the match continued is simply an explanation of why it continued. There's plenty of egregious content to get angry about in the world, there's no need to twist benign statements into some controversy.
  8. And maybe it needs to be asked - when has the WWE way (ie. Vince McMahon way) ever been the correct way? Is it fair to say that other than lucking into Hogan, Austin and Rock, that the company has been a shambles and McMahon doesn't know what the hell he's doing? Hell, Austin and Rock were nearly ruined before they even got going - where would the company be if that had happened? So you've got the period between Hulkamania and the Attitude Era, which was a complete tire fire, and since the end of Attitude it's been a significant, continual decline. Of the 36 years in the modern era, you've got what, 10 successful years?
  9. I'm 36 and DBZ was just airing and getting big when I was 12-13. I'm not really a fan of it, or anime as a whole, anymore but it's cool to see references and such. Shanna's outfit was a neat example. I also love seeing references to 1990's puroresu in modern wrestling, although I need more Hashimoto tributes.
  10. Life can be pretty simple sometimes. For example, you can guarantee that anyone who accuses the American Democrat party of being "socialist" is a complete idiot.
  11. I'd imagine that trying to negotiate the 90 day clause in order to sign a truly guaranteed contract would be out of the question for anyone outside of Cena and Brock. It probably would have been circumspect of them to do such a thing, and when it was inevitably declined use that as justification for turning down the money. I can say from personal experience that it's no fun to take the money and then get the rug pulled out from under you a short time later. It's also difficult to turn down the money when you know it's better than you'll get on the open market though.
  12. I find it typical that "results oriented thinking" is all the rage until it interferes with one's personal biases. For all intents and purposes, AEW has been a bigger success than was expected, so it's not difficult to believe that some of these guys hold a high opinion of themselves and their wrestling ability. It might not jive with JR's subjective opinions, but results are results. I actually agree with a lot of those points, but I can't help feel there is a ton of hypocrisy going around. I also don't think a more traditional approach to pro-wrestling would improve AEW's business - that ship has sailed and is likely never coming back. Guys like Cornette can bang on about how wrestling used to be more popular when it was more "serious" but as the cliche goes, correlation does not equal causation. WWE's biggest period coincided with an absolute dog-shit in-ring product and was more a result of the personalities they featured, not the presence of a tag-team rope, or serious, believable wrestling.
  13. SJW is a perfectly fine way to label the neo-Robespierreist nutjobs. I think the people who dislike that term protest too much so to speak, because it was only ever meant to be derogatory towards those who are bullies, coercive, and grossly intolerant of anything that doesn't 100% match their own views, not simply those who care about social issues. If the alt-right have co-opted the term, whatever, fuck them too while we're at it. The term "regressive left" also went through something similar despite it being a fantastically accurate description of that sort, although the impetus behind the creation of the term was different. And quite frankly, as a left leaning person myself, I don't want to be lumped in with those people as "the left" or "liberals" so I think it's important to differentiate them from those who actually care about égalité et liberté. Whatever you want to call it, it's something that should be given attention. Anyway, these things seem to all be about a few issues: Does one know the full story? How heinous is it really? If the full story (or thereabouts) is known, how harsh should one be to another human being who has done something heinous? Is there any utility whatsoever in treating people this way? In my opinion, personally bullying someone, even if they are an unsavory sort, is at best a waste of time, at worst incredibly unethical and mean-spirited. If these people are so upset by the purported actions, how about simply concocting an argument that attempts to show the person, and the world, why their actions were wrong? Even using strong language, this would be a perfectly acceptable way of dealing with things without devolving to atavistic personal attacks in an attempt to do nothing except harm the person. Edit: Oh and to get back to Ospreay vs. Kimura, I would agree that one situation was worse than the other due to the circumstances surrounding each of them. I'm just not sure it matters much in a practical sense, since as I alluded to above, bullying is never the proper path.
  14. One thing that heavily implies matches are too scripted (or maybe that the participants aren't so great) is when a spot is blown, or something else goes wrong, and the wrestlers just attempt the very same spot or sequence again rather than moving on or changing it up. Even if it's supposed to be the finish, why not just improvise something else on the fly? Trying the same thing again just looks bad in most cases. This also speaks to the workers just "wanting to get their shit in", something I used to be skeptical about but nowadays is something I'm recognizing a lot more.
