Controversial match, but I thought this was a stroke of genius as far as pro wrestling booking can go. Sometimes keeping a promotion fresh and unpredictable is more important than having the biggest and most credible guy on the roster be champion. And the match is really good too because they do a tremendous job messing with the audiences expectations. Working cutoffs in such a way has become a lost art, I'm afraid.

[2002-03-14-NOAH] Jun Akiyama & Makoto Hashi vs Yoshinari Ogawa & Naomichi Marufuji
Jetlag posted a topic in March 2002
Man I love NOAH. Even a minor lead-in tag like this will have a unique, unpredictable structure, everyone playing their role and guys unloading on eachother with stiff shots. Great opening which gets the crowd by the balls immediately. Marufuji putting Hashi in the tree of woe so he and Ogawa can double team Akiyama is something we all did in WWF No Mercy. I like Akiyama a lot but I thought he was outshone by Hashi here, who was just way stiffer, more intense, etc. I thought Akiyama could've done a better job giving Ogawa & Marufuji receipts for their rat boy tactics. Ogawa looked great as usual outsmarting his opponents. Marufuji didn't do anything stupid, even showing some viciousness dropkicking Hashis skull repeatedly. Loved the finish. -

[1997-06-29-AJPW] Daisuke Ikeda & Takeshi Ono vs Tsuyoshi Kikuchi & Yoshinari Ogawa
Jetlag posted a topic in June 1997
Random as hell match that I saw at the RealHero Google Drive. Ikeda and Ono come in and get a really nice reaction, then Kikuchi and Ogawa kind of eat their lunch. Kikuchi was uncooperative to the max and didn't sell a thing. Ogawa just did his usual spiel. There were some stiff as hell moves here, including Ikeda dishing out some of his stiffest shots I've ever seen on Kikuchi, Kikuchi firing back like a madman and Ono responding to Ogawa's pro style punches with shoot strikes, aswell as a brutal series of german suplexes to Ono. Fun match, but I would've liked a real match and not something borderline unprofessional. This was about the only match of Ikeda in AJPW where he was treated as anything special. I wonder if this was some sort of test as lot of AJPW guys were watching from the side.- 2 replies

JIP but this match is white hot fire baby! It's all about Kawada & Taue killin' eachother. Kikuchi gets thrown around as a human weapon! Ogawa dishes out nasty shots! Taue and Kawada beat the shit out of eachother some more! At one point, Kawada goes for a save and Taue just decks him in his face. Only early 90s puro delivers this kind of action. Sumo slaps = the best.

[2001-07-27-NOAH-Accomplish Our First Navigation] Yoshinari Ogawa vs Michael Modest
Edwin posted a topic in July 2001
This is a great little match and from what I've seen in APW, ROH and Noah, this is the best singles match I've seen Modest in. Modest does this cool drop toe hold cutoff on Ogawa where he stun guns him on the second rope early on before going after Ogawa's injured taped up left shoulder. Once Modest sees Ogawa's taped arm, he begins going after it with some neat looking arm yanks and armlocks. Modest also does a great job at stalling and playing up to the crowd and he makes them believe he can pull off the upset. However, his own overconfidence costs him. Great match.- 1 reply

This is sooooo much fun. Modest is a guy I didn't think much of before re-watching/watching a lot of these Noah matches, but he puts on a show here. Ever since his breakout singles match performance against Ogawa, back in July, Modest has really grown onto the local fans and he's made a name for himself. Here he does a great job at working over Ogawa's arm briefly with some nasty stuff that could easily dislocate someones shoulder. Unfortunately this doesn't go on for long given the match setting. They also pop the Michinoku Pro/Osaka Pro/Toryumon JAPAN wrestler on the ring apron is given opponents arm to pull and opponent reverses it and the guy on the ring apron ends up yanking his own tag partners arm which gets a big pop from the crowd. Everyone else looks good without taking the shine away from Modest. The finishing stretch is pretty neat as it's kept short and neat enough to not overstay it's welcome or head into overkill territory.

Another pretty fun Noah tag match. This is mostly based around Misawa and Otani and the crowd for some reason is fully behind Otani. I thought Ogawa and Omori were OK here and Misawa and Otani just outshined them with their interactions. Despite how fun those exchanges were, I felt this was a bit long and it dragged at times, but when they toned it up it was good fun.

This is boatloads of fun. This kicks off with a pretty brutal slap fest between the Takeshi's. After there's a pretty awesome moment with Ogawa getting tagged in and goading Akiyama who then comes in and Ogawa gets him to turn his back on Marufuji and Rikio who then jump in the ring and jump him from behind. This then breaks down into a southern-esque six man tag with Marufuji working from underneath as the FIP and he takes a brutal beatdown including some nasty body slams and getting put into some nasty manjigatames, namely from Morishima who tries to break the dude's spin in half. His comeback was not bad, as he kept it short and tagged out as soon as he could and smartly jumped off the ring apron and stayed on the floor to put over the beating he had taken before instead of jumping back on the ring apron and waiting to get tagged back in immediately. This breaks down and there's this cool spot where Marufuji tries his flying corner elbow on Akiyama, but Jun catches him in midair and hits him with a gut buster, sucks he doesn't really put that over much and is back to hitting highspots seconds later including an extremely weak looking dropkicks on Morishima. There's also this sweet looking double team spot here between Morishima and Akiyama on Marufuji where Morishima picks him up in front the turnbuckle and Akiyama dropkicks Marufuji from behind and he goes neck first into the turnbuckle. The guy who shines the most to me in this match is Shiga, who continues to look great in multi man tags. He hits some smooth looking submission attempts on Marufuji including a manjigatame during the beatdown and some slick armlocks in the finishing stretch one which he catches Marufuji in off a flipping dive from the top rope. Really fun match.
