  1. This is my first time to see Austin Theory, but I have to say I don't get guys cutting promos with that scripted WWE cadence when no one is making them do it. (At least I hope no one is.) I have no desire to return to the rape culture days of early 2000s indie wrestling at all, but calling an opponent an "indie piece of trash" just might be too far in the other direction. I loved DJ Z here and think he has a bright future. I hear he's working BOLA this year, so I hope he gets a lot of matches and has a breakout weekend because he seems on the verge of something cool. I'm not a huge fan of three way matches, but they do execute some of the necessities of that really well here. I thought it was cool how DJ Z wanted to do the big move from up top, but it was presented as him countering something else when they were actually setting up his own move. Pretty cool way to structure that so it's not obvious what they're doing. Good match. DJ Z looks ready to conquer the world. ***1/2
  2. Not a MOTYC or anything, but a wild brawl. I'm not familiar with Warbeast, but they're managed by Kevin Sullivan and are a pretty wild tag team who more than hold their own against the craziness Jacobs and Janela bring. There's also a valet with Warbeast who hits a wild flipping piledriver off the top rope onto a set of 4 chairs on Janela. Jacobs and Sheik get some color by spiking each other. Pretty fun stuff if you like brawls.
  3. Midnight match - billed as the first (North American) match of the year. This isn't for everyone, for sure, but I sort of feel like if you can't enjoy this in some way you might be a joyless ogre. This sort of hardcore/weapons/deathmatch-esque stuff is not really my thing, but Starr and Janela went out there and had fun and wrestling is sometimes just fun, ya damn ogres. All kidding aside though, this really was just a bunch of fun to me and it is all about context. Its a midnight match on New Years day where the fans bring the weapons. This is exactly what you would expect, a lot of crazy, cringy spots, blood, and big mark-out moves. Both men got their asses beat. It was a lot of movement from big spot to big spot, but I actually thought they did well to bring their story the table here and - all things considered - not let it get TOO lost in the fray. Some of this isn't my cup of tea because I am not sure into deathmatch stuff and they pull from that genre a good bit here without going full in. The sticks in the head spot does nothing for me, for example. Its just something I see and I don't enjoy, so that part was a bit of a momentum breaker for me personally. Overall though I thought it was a lot of fun. It isn't really what I want to see all the time, but in this context I thought it worked well. These were two of my favorite wrestlers from last year and they are charging into 2018 with a ton of momentum. Should be really interesting to see what each of them does. EDIT: Would someone with powers be willing to move this to the appropriate section. I missed that Jan 2018 already had its own section and accidentally started this in the wrong section. Apologies for the inconvenience.
  4. I didn't like the first two matches in Webster/Cage + Brooks/Haskins at all, so out comes the best wrestler in the world to stop the streak of awful matches! This is, so far, my favorite PWG Trevor Lee performance & match. Loved his attack on Janela during the introductions & that set the formula for rest of the match - Trevor beat the crap out of Joey in fantastic fashion while Janela had some awesome, explosive comebacks. Loved Trevor's trashtalk throughout w/ him mocking Joey's "WHAT AM I?" yell, his cocky confidence was also awesome & the moment when Janela starts to fire up & Trevor just grabs his goddamn nose was so great. Excellent match. ****1/4
  5. This was so incredibly entertaining. Trevor Lee's TNA heel shtick, Chuck Taylor joining the match & having to go to the back & get geared up for it, him accidentally slamming his own partner Joey Janela, confusing him with Trevor Lee because of their similar gear, WALTER having none of the fun & games, Flamita coming in & showcasing that freakish quickness of his, WALTER & Jonah brawling to the back... This one was just absolute gold from start to finish. A PWG classic! ****1/2
