[1993-04-02-AAA-Sin Limite] Eddy Guerrero & El Hijo del Santo & Konnan vs Cien Caras & Mascara Ano 2000 & Universo 2000

Recommended Posts

Another okay match between these guys that seems a little flat. The highlight is Cien Caras pulling Santo's mask completely off and Eddy diving halfway across the ring to cover his head immediately. He makes a valiant comeback in the second fall by running from the back and going right after the rudos.

The technicos win in two falls straight -- first, because of Caras taking off Santo's mask, and the second fall when Konnan pins Caras.

Solid, but not great. I'm still waiting on some AAA to knock my socks off.

I wouldn't have believed it myself, but I thought Konnan was pretty awesome here. His strikes looked pretty good and he executed a lot of good near-falls and counters with Caras. And yes, that finish was great. The other highlight was one of the masked Hermanos holding Santo for a tope from the other (I always forget which one is which), but Eddie frees Santo--one rudo goes flying through the barricade and the other is on the floor while Santo and Eddy just rain somersault sentons on him, one after the other. That eliminates the other Hermanos leaving Caras alone with Konnan for the closing stretch.

Heels attack early and clear the ring before Konnan comes back as superman but is taken down 3 on 1. Universo tries to take off Santo's mask and the heel beatdown continues. Caras standing on Konnan's back isn't exactly impactful offense. Heels clear the ring again. Faces are back to take over before it resets and Caras takes out an oblivious Konnan. Santo takes a nice backdrop. Santo with a nice somersault senton, but Caras immediately rips his mask off and Eddy covers his face. Looks like that was a DQ for first fall. 3 on 2 to start the second fall, until Santo returns. Universo accidentally takes out Ano 2000 on a dive and Eddy & Santo to senton him on floor. This leaves Konnan/Caras inside where Konnan pins Caras to win after ref was distracted on a Caras fall. Seems to build for their stadium match, but the issue doesn't feel all that heated or special.

Lucha has not been knocking my socks off in 1993.

**3/4

This was good enough but when Santo getting his mask pulled doesn't' feel like the 5th most consequential thing that has happened in the last two hours of this disc chronologically, this match becomes a victim of positioning to a point. Still the heel trios here was good and whipping ass in the beginning and then taking over and Santo can give a really good fired up comeback as we know. Good stuff but not next level like the matches that preceded it. ***1/4

As is the case with most AAA trios matches, this was more of a six-man battle royal than a tag match, which made it confusing and hard to follow until the one-on-one closing stretch between Caras and Konnan. Not only that, but I completely missed Eddie's part in the finish, which wouldn't really have made sense without explanation from a commentator anyway. In short, like most lucha trios matches, this was a total dud in my eyes.

Del Santo was an idiot for wrestling with his mask untied for most of the first fall. He should know perfectly well that the rudos will try for it every chance they get. Surely one of the refs (preferably the tecnico-leaning one) could have noticed it and retied the thing for him. (I know, him storming back from the locker room with his mask retied got a big pop, but sometimes drama should take a back seat to common sense. I was more appalled by del Santo's foolishness than I was thrilled to see his comeback.)
