[1998-09-05-MPPW-TV] Jerry Lawler, Streak, Robert Gibson & ?? vs Billy Joe Travis & Heinrick Von Keller & Bulldog Raines & The Bodyguards (No DQ Falls Count Anywhere Elimination)

Recommended Posts

Can anyone help me fill in those question marks on Lawler's team? This is kind of a lethargic brawl that isn't helped by Lawler standing outside and mingling with Stacy while taking shots without getting in the ring at first. This is also a lot of green guys doing garbage can shots and not much else. The eliminations are also hard to follow. Lawler has fun toying with Hales at ringside, but doesn't seem interested in working a match. He reminds me of the Uncensored match where Hogan just came out for a photo op with Rodman.

Even though Hales vs. Lawler as a feud has been fun, this match shows how a house show around this time might not be as the Memphis talent was pretty putrid. The masked guys on Lawler's team didn't even get named unless I missed it and the intensity and violence is not near as good as the DX vs. Nation tussle from Raw a few weeks ago. The stuff with Baxter and Stacy locked in the cage and the melee with Hales and Lawler was fun to end the show but this felt like a long episode of PPW and we only got about 30 mins of footage on a 90 min show. (*1/2)

Pretty tepid brawl--ten guys in that little studio plus Bruno, plus Hales in the shark cage, and then Brandon Baxter later, just feels way too cramped. Weapons shots aside this is mostly worked by guys trying not to break nails. The post-match angle where Baxter locks himself in the cage with Stacy also doesn't feel as hot as it should.
