[1999-04-03-ECW-Cyberslam] Chris Candido vs Taz

Recommended Posts

Tammy Sytch looks wasted. Alarmingly wasted. Candido cuts a promo about all the rumors flying around about the two of them at the time before the match. Last few minutes of the match. Not Candido's finest hour, as he doesn't look much better than Tammy himself. They do a hardcore injury angle with Candido and Styles just slides into this obviously pre-packed tribute to him which is just so heavy handed because he's not reacting to anything. Candido gets carted out and Taz attacks Candido again on the stretcher after a "Fuck you, Taz" attack. This is a weird mixture of work and shoot that's just sad and uncomfortable to watch.

Candido gets tazplexed through a table in the corner. They treat the injury really serious and Styles basically reads Candido's obituary. The crowd chants "fuck you Taz" and Taz attacks Candidio. This would make sense if Taz was going heel but he didn't.

Another worked shoot angle. How many times did ECW go to that well. Much like we saw Missy lose here allure week after week in ECW in 1996, this is happening with Tammy now as she doesn't look put together at all. Pretty sad stuff to watch overall and an angle that never would get over.

Candido looks awful and the crowd is sitting on their hands at the finish. We get another Tazmissionplex through the table and I'll at least give them points for consistency. I'd rather go through the "been there, done that" with the injury angle re-do than have it become Just Another Spot. The crowd chants "Fuck you Taz" as Candido is immobilized and taken out, so he dumps the stretcher and beats up Candido some more before choking him out as Joey laments the broken neck history of both Candido and Taz, while the fans are now suddenly cheering Taz again and singing along with his catchphrase. How did the ECW Arena trained seals not break *their* necks from whiplash? And just why is the champion decisively vanquishing his challenger supposed to make the title match at Hardcore Heaven more appealing to see?
