[1999-06-20-WAR-7th Anniversary Show] Genichiro Tenryu & Nobutaka Araya & Shoji Nakamaki vs Atsushi Onita & Sambo Asako & Shigeo Okumura (Tornado Death Street Fight)

Recommended Posts

All the chaos and hate that has come to define this feud, only this time Tenryu and friends have the home team advantage. This is yet another worthy addition to the series. The Onita Pro matches were just a *little* bit more unhinged, but we need the flip side, WAR version of this match to represent this feud properly.

This is wonderfully chaotic right from the opening bell and the crowd is super hot. Lots of crowd brawling, chair shots, bumps through the chairs in the crowd, good stuff. Tenryu is pretty dominant throughout. Best part of the match is Onita coming back into the ring after dominating the crowd brawling, and Tenryu meeting him as he steps onto the apron and unloading with jabs and chops to the throat as Onita stares him down and comes back for more. Really awesome brawl.

This was a more of a straight crazy ass brawl than the match before to me which was great. Tenryu and company fit in and him interacting ONita is still aces every time out. I enjoyed seeing a young Okumura here compared to what we see of him now. Just 15 minutes of a violent spectacle match that crammed a lot of stuff but still meant something to the overall feud. ***3/4

This is a nice contrast comapred to the Honma match before it. Tenyru is so great in thiis. I love his running punch and he just destroys poor Okumura. Sambo is hilarious trying to attack Tenyru after the match. Fun brawl. Onita cuts another good promo after the match.

First Sambo Asako sighting in quite a while. The years had seemingly been rough to him. Now the problem usually with these 6 man's is that the heat dies so quickly when it's jobber vs jobber. By having Tornado rules they got around that problem, as either Tenryu or Onita could be on screen at all times. At the start I was thinking 'don't you dare take the camera off the stars' and the director was on exactly the same wavelength. Even when the leaders weren't facing off they were beating the crap out of the jobbers. Plenty of chair shots, high impact moves and a splattering of blood. Nothing high end but good fun all the way and didn't outstay its welcome.

This is a chaotic mess, but the best kind of chaotic mess--a match that was probably even more fun to see live than watching on tape. It's just a bunch of stiff shots and chair-throwing but by the end it actually coalesces into a real match with false finishes and saves and strategy and all that fun stuff. It also features Shoji Nakamaki taking the time to shake the hand of an adolescent fan who helps him throw chairs into the ring, which is worth a * all by itself.

I saw that too, Pete and I marked out.

Genichiro Tenryu, Nobutaka Araya, & Shoji Nakamaki vs Atsushi Onita, Sambo Askao & Okumura - WAR 6/20/99

I have never seen an Onita match before, believe it or not. He was awesome in this. Throwing people with reckless abandon into chairs and the wall. Piledriving people on the floor. Besides Araya, I didn't know the other three jay-brones, but they seemed fine with getting demolished by Tenryu and Onita. While Onita impressed, Tenryu was the star. His facial expressions and how much fun he was having just DESTROYING these jobbers was awesome. Loved the chair throws. Every chop and lariat was brutal! Also loved the hot pink tank top he was rocking! We did get some Onita/Tenryu in the middle with Onita & Co. ganging up Tenryu climaxing with a spike piledriver. I loved at one point Tenryu is getting beta up but you just hear screams of agony off camera. Tenryu was just blasting people at one point Onita is on the apron and Tenryu just smokes him with punches and chops. At the end of the match, Onita tries his bets to save his jobbers from the Wrath of Tenryu, but Tenryu powerbombs, chops and LARIATS his way to victory in WAR!!!

Stark contrast to the New Japan stuff Tenryu was doing at the time or watching this close together with Takada matches, but it shows Tenryu's range. This is like the best possible ECW arena brawling. Relentless chaos. ****1/4
