Ricochet

  • Open the Twin Gate Titles – Akira Tozawa & BB Hulk © vs. Naruki Doi & Ricochet (Kobe World 2013)

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x130oz0_mad-blankey-akira-tozawa-bxb-hulk-c-vs-world-1-international-naruki-doi-ricochet-dragon-gate_sport

This match was phenomenal. Ricochet in particular was fantastic, and he’s clearly the best flyer in the world. The pace of this match, the crazy highspots, the timing of everything, this was as close to a perfect tag team match you will see, especially if you dig the “go, go, go” style of match. Even if you don’t, you should go out of your way to see this, if for nothing else the spectacle and athleticism. Tozawa comically tried to copy Ricochet’s triple backflip taunt, and caught a boot to the face for his trouble. Ricochet hit a picture perfect springboard SSP to the outside. Richochet tried a 450, Hulk moved, Ricochet landed on his feet, only to be kicked in the face at that precise moment. An incredible spot with impeccable timing from all involved. Things really started to heat up, and they worked a ridiculous pace down the stretch. I was rooting for kickouts because I didn’t want it to end. Ricochet got a near fall with a Shooting Star Press. Doi kicked out of a Tozawa straight jacket delayed german, to a big pop. Ricochet pinned Tozawa with a picture perfect double rotation moonsault. Does any big star take more pins than Tozawa? Just an amazing match. Easily the best tag team match of the year, and maybe the best tag match I’ve ever seen. Certain Match of the Year contender. Everybody needs to watch this. ****3/4 http://www.voicesofwrestling.com/2013/07/22/dragon-gate-kobe-world-2013-full-review-results/

  • IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title: Kota Ibushi © vs. Ricochet (NJPW Dominion 2014)

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1zyt9o_kota-ibushi-vs-ricochet-njpw-dominion-6-21-2014_sport

This match had no chance to meet my expectations unless it was close to five stars and a match of the year contender. Had they gone five more minutes, they may have cleared the bar. What they did manage to do, was have a tremendous match, and still manage to leave me wanting more. I really hope they meet up again down the line, either here, or even in Dragon Gate or DDT. How about this for an outside the box idea…Ricochet wins the title in a Dragon Gate ring, and then Ibushi wins it back in DDT? Masaaki Mochizuki accompanied Ricochet to the ring. First of many crazy spots was Ibushi trying a springboard hurricanrana on Ricochet who was standing on the top turnbuckle, but Ricochet landing on his feet.

Ricochet1.gif

Crowd went apeshit for that. Ibushi escaped the Benadryller a couple of times, and Ricochet rolled out of the way of a Phoenix Splash, so a subplot was that they had the finishers well scouted. Ibushi had to bust out the seldom used Phoenix Plex, which looks like it’s going to kill somebody every time he uses it, to put Ricochet away.

Ibushi1.gif

The closing stretch was truly fantastic, and they did tons of spectacular stuff, but it felt like it ended too soon. Ricochet tried to give Ibushi his BotSJ trophy in the post match, but Ibushi handed it back and they hugged it out. I WANT MORE. ****1/4 http://www.voicesofwrestling.com/2014/06/21/new-japan-dominion-2014-ippv-review/

  • Best of the Super Jr. 2014 Final: KUSHIDA vs. Ricochet

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1ywoce_njpw-best-of-super-juniors-2014-finals-ricochet-vs-kushida_sport

Right before they kicked it into second gear for the finish, I was thinking about how this was a perfectly good match, but nothing special. But then it turned into one of the more memorable BotSJ finals in recent memory. Crisp work from start to finish, great athleticism, and tremendous pacing. Easily the best performance of KUSHIDA’s career, and another fine match to add to Ricochet’s tremendous 2014 resume, as he creeps up to being perhaps Tomohiro Ishii’s top challenger for Wrestler of the Year (or Most Outstanding in Observer vernacular). Top spots included KUSHIDA doing a somersault tope off of the ring post to the outside, an KUSHIDA surviving a top rope Benadryller and 630 splash.

KUSHIDA.gif

Later, KUSHIDA reversed a Benadryller attempt into a kimura, and Ricochet had to fight like hell to make the ropes. As they went through some of these sequences, and the crowd was going bonkers, it occurred to me that KUSHIDA should probably lose. He was in the midst of an epic performance anyway, and is at a point in the formative stages of his singles push that a hard fought close loss probably does more for him than a hotshot win would, because now the story is that he’s a player, and he can come back next year or the year after and win this thing with more impact. Plus a Ricochet/Ibushi match is exactly what the somewhat dry New Japan junior scene could use right now. And that’s what they’ll get, as Ricochet hit the Benadryller for the win. A masterful performance by both men, who had the crowd in their palms down the stretch. Great match.****1/2

  • Open the Dream Gate Championship: Ricochet © vs YAMATO (Dragon Gate Dead or Alive 2014)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpNt-lDRCT8

Ricochet came to the ring with both the Dream Gate & Freedom Gate belts. An interesting twist coming into this which cast some extra doubt on the outcome was Ricochet being announced for the New Japan Best of the Super Juniors, which would make for some interesting booking decisions if he were to enter the tournament as Dream Gate champion. Welp, turns out that won’t be a problem, because YAMATO pinned him here to win the title. YAMATO used a wrench on Ricochet’s knee while cinching in a half crab early on, and the knee damage became the story of the match, with Ricochet displaying some fantastic selling. There were multiple instances of Ricochet doing serious damage to YAMATO with kicks or knee strikes, but he was unable to capitalize or go for pin attempts due to re-aggravating the knee. He even sold the injury at one point while standing on the top rope, and the extra few seconds gave YAMATO time to avoid a 450 splash, which was a great spot. The units got involved towards the end, but by Dragon Gate standards it was hardly egregious or out of control. Ricochet is on a roll, and YAMATO continues to be perhaps the most underrated performer in wrestling. ****1/2 http://www.voicesofwrestling.com/2014/05/05/5189/

Coming off the discussion in the Meltzer thread about El Santo, is there any idea how much footage of that era of Luchadores are available online? With some of these names getting nominated I'd pretty surely wager guys like him, Blue Demon, Black Shadow, Gory, etc. deserve a look if it's possible.

Since no one else has bitten on nominating Austin Aries I'll do it. I really do think Nigel merits nominating as well. My gut tells me I should nominate Sami Callihan too (who definitely already has three reviews on this board in my show reviews thread if nothing else)

Anyway here are three Aries reviews. Go ahead and start a thread for him and Sami if you can Grimmas

Bully Ray v. Austin Aries Sacrifice

On paper this is the best match TNA has to offer. It was nowhere near as good as the Styles LMS match from last year, but it was still a really good match. Bully Ray is a tremendous douche and these guys seemed to find great joy in stiffing the fuck out of each other. Aries big bump to the floor was fucking nuts and Bully Ray reacting to it by going straight to the back was awesome. I didn't care for the Chris Parks shit, but it was actually a decent way to set up Aries come back after the cutter near fall and Bully Ray's bump on that brainbuster looked sick. Finish was probably better on paper than in execution, but it still worked. Really stiff, quality match.

Aries v. Roode 7/8/12

I think this match badly exposed Roode as a guy who can not piece together a compelling heat segment. It's funny but Kash and Daniels had much "less" to work with from a storyline perspective and were still far more engaging in their respective heat segments. Still it would feel wrong to "no" this match because it was structured well and it was a match about putting over Aries as a believable ace which it absolutely succeeded in doing. I was a pretty big fan of Aries from bell-to-bell here, including the way they teased his big spots before delivering them later. That tope into the railing was insane. I also loved the finishing run as Roode as poor man's Flair cheating to win is exactly what I expected and they crossed it up perfectly. Without that finish I'm not sure it's a YES, with the finish it is.

There is already a Joe v. Aries match review posted in this thread.

Does James Storm have three reviews on PWO?

Will defer to someone with more knowledge of how to navigate the board if there are three reviews for Ikuto Hidaka, Shinobu, & Madoka?

Will make a microscope for each if no when I get enough time to bang out some full reviews but would enjoy starting a discussion on these dudes in a bit of a quicker fashion, particularly the last guy.

So what I did was produce a list of just over 100 people who I would consider as potential top 100 candidates without thinking much about it and 16 of those were not nominated already so I figured I should make a whole bunch of nominations. Sorry about the super long post

-Jeff Hardy: his microscope thread has more than enough in it: http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?/topic/19656-jeff-hardy/

-Kyle O'Reilly: he has matches with threads on here but there seems to be nothing in those threads. Anyway most of his best work has been in PWG in the past 18 months or so, particularly vs Davey Richards at Is Your Body Ready and vs ACH at Battle of Los Angeles 2013, also his tag team work with Bobby Fish is fun, worth checking out is their match against Alex Shelley and KUSHIDA from the G-1 finals show this year.

-Michael Elgin: again he has a bunch of matches with threads but no posts in them, don't see much point in providing links to those.

-Lo Ki: microscope thread with plenty of reviews: http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?/topic/29461-low-ki/

-Davey Richards: seen some hate for this guy on this board already, and I understand that he has matches that build up and up then finish on a total down note but he's a athlete and knows how to make himself stand out unlike guys like rodrick strong or eddie edwards Anyway can't find reviews on here, hoping these nominations will actually count without having to review loads of matches.

-Akira Tozawa: Again loss has made a bunch of threads for his matches but no posts except for in this one: http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?/topic/22183-dingo-vs-akira-tozawa-acw-guilty-by-association-011611/

Don't get too excited, by March 2016 I could end up having a similar perspective to the rest of this board. I'm mainly doing this to give me a good reason to discover and explore stuff I haven't seen; Memphis, Mid-South, Lucha before '91 yknow so who knows if these people I nominated will by in my 100 by the time I watch all this stuff

I'm not a big fan of any names on your list I recognized, but I'll say this. It will be nice to have people advocating for them. I think for this to truly be a serious project, you need to at least take a short look at something outside your wheelhouse even if it doesn't last long. And it seems to me that group of wrestlers will bring at least the chance of that alongside stuff like joshi, lucha, WoS, etc. for a lot of people. Stuff like this ultimately becomes more about broadening your horizons and maybe discovering something you like that you might not have otherwise watched than just the ranking of wrestlers.
