Just got caught up with the shows from the 9th and liked the stuff with The Roadies & Moose and Jimmy Garvin/Precious and Tully coming in to be his partner for a 6 man. I also liked Hogan fighting off One Man Gang and Patera on his own.

A Cage match between The Road Warriors and your Wild Bills team is something I'd definitely want to see. Hogan and Olympia vs. Patera and OMG would have been a pretty awesome match too.

AWA All-Star Wrestling for September 16th

Samu vs. Col. Buck Robley

A rare case of the Colonel getting his own hands dirty with Army business. The wily veteran was accompanied by Eric Embry and gave Samu quite a fight, looking like he might just pull of the victory on a number of occasions. The day belonged to the popular Samoan, however, who was able to hit the Flying Splash for the one two three. After the match, it looked like the “Flamboyant” one might just charge in and attack him, but the two men just stared each other down before heading back to the locker room.

Sheikh Adnan Kaissie vs. Buck Zumhofe

The Sheikh was accompanied by Boris Zukhov and Ken Patera. While the ref was arguing with Kaissie and Patera to get the Olympic strong man out of the ring, Zukhov blasted Buck in the back of the head with a chain assisted lariat. When the ref turned around, he was surprised to see Zumhofe laid out on the mat but decided not to investigate too closely. Kaissie locked the unconscious Zumhofe in the Camel Clutch and the ref dropped Buck’s arm three times to count him out.

Prof. Toru Tanaka vs. Bill Rathke

The Professor has been on a roll since moving over to the side of the angels and seemed to enjoy the cheers of the crowd as he took it to Big Bill, trapping him in an Oriental Sleeper for the win.

Ed Wiskowsky & Jimmy Garvin vs. Da Crusher & Ivan Putski

Crusher and Putski were led to the ring by Toru Tanaka, while the Prince and Gorgeous Jimmy were led by Precious. This was as wild as you might imagine, with Crusher looking like he was going to take out Garvin with the Bolo Punch, only for Precious to take advantage of a ref distraction and spray Crusher in the eyes with the aerosol can. Garvin then hit Crusher with the DDT to get the underhanded win. While Tanaka tried to help his downed friend, Putski and Wiskowski actually bumped chests in the ring but were separated by the officials before they actually threw down with each other.

“Wild” Bill Irwin vs. Javier Cruz

Irwin was joined by his championship partner Billy Jack while Cruz was joined by Vinnie Valentino, making his return to AWA TV with his face still heavily bandaged but his effusive personality undimmed by the brutal attack from Jimmy Garvin. Cruz put in an heroic effort fighting from underneath his much bigger opponent, jabbing and moving and trying to stay a step ahead of Irwin. He was eventually caught by Wild Bill, though, who proceeded to beat him down. The match took a turn, though, when the Road Warriors and Moose Cholak came to ringside to, err, observe the match. Irwin was distracted enough to stop and jaw with the Roadies, only for Cruz to take advantage with a schoolboy roll up and get a quick pin. The Wild Bills went crazy while the Latin Lovers and the fans were jubilant. The Lovers now have the momentum going in to their title match in Milwaukee. We will see if it can carry them to a victory for the belts.

Hulk Hogan & Mr. Olympia vs. One Man Gang & Ken Patera

As ferocious a match as you can imagine, with Gang and Patera doing everything they can to do as much damage as possible to Hogan and soften him up for the upcoming World Title match. Hogan was finally able to tag in Olympia, who was the proverbial house afire as he took on both men by himself. It looked like he might just beat the odds, but it came to an end when he ran into a Patera power slam, followed by a running splash by the Gang to end the match. After the finish, Gang pointed to Olympia and then Hogan, shouting out, “You’re next!”

AWA All-Star Wrestling for September 23rd

Prof. Toru Tanaka vs. Ed Wiskowski

Tanaka was followed to the ring by "Polish Power" Ivan Putski, who proceeded to give Wiskowski many significant looks during the match. "The Polish Prince", for his part, clearly took notice of Putski as well , pointing to him every time he had the advantage over Tanaka, as though to indicate "Take a good look at what I am doing to him. You're next." The tide turned when Wiskowski hit a lariat on Tanaka that caused him to collide with the ref, sending the ref sprawling sideways and Tanaka crashing into the corner. Wiskowski pulled out the brass knucks and again pointed this out to Putski, laughing all the time. However, while in the corner, Tanaka reached into his ceremonial salt bucket and threw a fistful of salt at Wiskowski's face, who was just barely able to block it in time. Tanaka jumped on Wiskowski with a flurry of chops, but the ref had recovered just in time to see him throw the salt and disqualified Tanaka. The ref and Putski both had to pull Tanaka off Wiskowski as he kept up the attack after the match was called

The Latin Lovers & The Road Warriors vs. The Wild Bills, Lord Humongous & Eric Embry

This match was as crazy as you can imagine, with the Road Warriors trying to go after the Wild Bills and the Army doing everything they can to work over Vinnie Valentino, who was still showing the effects of his beatdown at the hands of Jimmy Garvin from a few weeks ago. Embry was particularly vicious in his attack on Valentino, setting him up in the corner and climbing the second turnbuckle, indicating he was going to drop the knee on Valentino's still bandaged face. The provoked Samu to run in from the back and attack Embry , once again forcing the ref to call for a DQ. Buck Robley and Cal Manson jumped into the ring , prompting Moose Cholak to join in on the fun, and the result was a chaotic brawl between both sides that took several officials to clear up.

AWA American Title Match : Jimmy Garvin © vs. Da Crusher

Garvin clearly wanted no part of Crusher, doing everything he could to avoid locking up with him and pulling out every sneaky trick he could think of to get an advantage when the match was underway. It seemed like Crusher was going to take the American title when he had Garvin lined up for a running Bolo Punch, but Precious grabbed his ankle from outside, catching him in the corner. When the distracted Crusher turned to face Precious, Garvin got him in a roll up with a fistfull of trunks for the quick dirty win. When the outraged Crusher got into it with Garvin after the match, both Ed Wiskowski and Toru Tanaka charged the ring, leading to yet another pull apart brawl. After that was cleared up by the AWA officials, a clearly infuriated AWA President Stanley Blackburn got on the ringside microphone and announced that if there were any more outside interference for the rest of the show, it would result in immediate suspensions and a hefty fine.

One Man Gang vs. Mr. Olympia

The popular masked man put forth a valiant effort against the big 747, throwing everything in his arsenal at him to knock him off his feet. It seemed he might just pull it off with a flying cross body block, only for One Man Gang to catch him and drive him to the mat with a brutal power slam. One running splash later, and that was all she wrote. One Man Gang looks unstoppable going into his World Title match with Hulk Hogan.

AWA World Heavyweight Title Match : Hulk Hogan © vs. Boris Zukhov

Hogan, for this match at least, was free of the distractions of the rest of the Sheikh's men, and proceeded to dominate the Russian Menace. Zukhov seemed like he might get the advantage and set up the Hammer & Sickle when he whipped Hogan hard into the turnbuckle, only for Hulk to come roaring out of the blocks with a mighty Axe Bomber that knocked Zukhov off his feet. He followed up with the Big Leg Drop to succesfully defend his title. He scored a convincing victory over Zukhov, but the One Man Gang will be a whole other matter.

AWA at The Mecca, Milwaukee, September 23rd

One-Fall Four-Way Match : Buck Zumhofe vs. Ken Patera vs. Lord Humongous vs. Boris Zukhov

Tough draw for Zumhofe. None of his opponents seemed much interested in letting him tag out, just taking turns beating on him and keeping him in the whole time. Zukhov seemed to add a bit of extra snap into the Hammer & Sickle before tagging in Patera, who hit two brutal looking shoulder breakers on Zumhofe. Patera in turn tagged in Humongous who put Buck in the modified cobra clutch to put a mercy kill on the match. All three men made sure to step on the prone form of Zumhofe as they left the ring.

The Road Warriors vs. Col. Buck Robley & Maj. Cal Manson

The Roadies would have rather had their hands on the Wild Bills but had to satisfy themselves tonight by taking their frustrations out on the leader of the Army and his second in command. They swiftly stormed the ring, tossed Robley to the outside and destroyed Manson with a series of power moves, finishing him off with a double clothesline. The Roadies are clearly gunning for the world tag titles and, if the Wild Bills make it out of tonight with the belts, they had best keep their eyes out for them.

Mr. Olympia vs. Tom Stanton

Stanton was joined at ringside by his Minnesota Heartbreakers partners, Rocky Brewer and Jeff Sword. In spite of a game effort by Stanton, Olympia caught him coming off the ropes with a powerslam to get the win. Post-match, Brewer and Sword came in the ring to try to get their shots in on the masked man. Olympia was holding his own against both men, but was bushwhacked with a chair to the back by ... "The Continental Lover" Eddie Mansfield? He doesn't even work here! He directed the Heartbreakers to put the boots to Olympia until security ordered them from the ring.

Samu vs. Eric Embry

This feud has certainly heated up recently and this battle raged back and forth, with both men looking like they could take it at different points. The end came when Samu ducked his head in an attempt at a back body drop, only for Embry to catch him in an over the shoulder neckbreaker. One pildriver later and Embry had gotten the pin. But that was not enough for Embry, who dragged Samu out of the ring and pulled back the ringside mats. In spite of the best efforts of the officials to stop it, Embry hit a brutal piledriver on Samu on the exposed concrete. Samu had to be stretchered out as Embry headed to the locker room, laughing all the way.

AWA World Tag Team Title Match : The Wild Bills © vs. The Latin Lovers with special guest referee, Eddie Mekka

From the start, there was a lot of outside, err, interest in this match with the Road Warriors, Garvin & Wiskowski and the rest of the Colonel's Army showing up and looking like they were going to make their presence felt in the match. Eddie Mekka let them know he meant business, however, and announced he had been given full authorization to issue suspensions that evening if they didn't depart the ringside area right away. When the extraneous wrestlers had cleared, the match got underway and the underdog Latin Lovers did everything they could to pull off the upset, making use of their speed against the much bigger champs. They kept in up for a while, but then the Bills started to bludgeon them down. At a few points, it looked like they would put Vinnie Valentino down for the count, but he kept finding it in him to kick out. Finally, in frustration, Bill Irwin brought his cowbell and bullrope into the ring and looked to bring the cowbell down hard on Valentino's still bandaged face. Mekka gave him a verbal warning but Irwin ignored it, so Mekka interposed himself between Irwin and the fallen Valentino. That was the last straw for Irwin, who clobbered Mekka with the bullrope. Mekka fell to the ground and quickly signalled for the bell to call the DQ before the Bills started to put the boots to him. Luckily for the Big Ragoo, the Road Warriors and Moose Cholak stormed the ring and drove off the Bills. The Roadies helped Mekka to the back as Moose and Javier Cruz tended to the hurt Valentino.

Da Crusher, Ivan Putski & Prof. Toru Tanaka vs. Jimmy Garvin, Ed Wiskowski & Tully Blanchard

The big six man that a lot of the crowd had been waiting for, with all men mixing it up and in particular Putski and Wiskowski going after each other. Putski in particular spent a lot of time in the ring, absorbing a lot of punishment from the opposing crew. On a number of occasions it looked like he would be able to tag out, only to get cut off at the last second. The match took a strange turn when who should come to ringside but Blanchard's Texas Dynasty partner, David Von Erich, who yanked Tanaka down to the ground and slammed him hard face first into the ring apron. Crusher came over to help, only to get thrown hard, crashing head first into the ring steps. By this time, Putski finally managed to get clear of his opponents and get to his own corner, only to find nobody there to tag him out. Blanchard and Wiskowski dragged him back to the middle of the ring for more punishment. Crusher was able to recover and went over to try to help out the fallen Tanaka. Putski once again fought his way clear, only to see nobody in his corner and Crusher trying to help up Tanaka, which clearly displease "Polish Power". Crusher was finally able to pull himself up onto the ring apron and reach his arm out for the tag. Putski slugged his way through the opposition and was able to tag in Da Crusher, to the huge cheers of the fans. Crusher came in a house afire with swinging fists on Blanchard, driving him back into his own corner ... only to get blasted with a blindside Polish Hammer by Putski! A disgusted looking Putski pointed at Crusher and Blanchard lackadaisically lay on him with a cocky grin for the pinfall. The crowd howled in outrage at this betrayal as Putski joined Precious, Garvin, Wiskowski and the Texas Dynasty as they left the ring.

AWA World Title Match : Hulk Hogan © vs. One Man Gang - one-fall Chain Match, No DQ, No Countout, with Sheikh Kaissie, Ken Patera, Boris Zukhov & Mr. Olympia banned from ringside

These two titans finally met in a one on one match and it was as intense match up , pitting One Man Gang's size and ruthlessness against the champ's power and determination. Both men were a bloody mess by the end of the match as they took turns working each over with the chain. One Man Gang seemed close to taking the title but Hogan was clearly not about to let it go while he could still stand. Finally, Gang whipped Hogan hard into the corner, looking to finish him off with an Avalanche, only for Hogan to dodge out of the way at the last second and send Gang crashing into the turnbuckle. As Gang staggered out of the corner, Hogan wrapped the chain around his arm and flattened the big 747 with an Axe Bomber, finally putting him away. Hogan unfastened the chain from his wrist and held is title belt over his head, to the wild cheers of the fans, as One Man Gang argued with the ref that he had given a fast count. When the ref refused to reverse the decision, Gang smashed him in the face with the chain! AWA President Stanley Blackburn, who had clearly had enough at this point, got on the microphone and announced that One Man Gang was immediately suspended from the AWA for 90 days.

The Road Warriors teaming with Vinnie Valentino is...something else.

Pretty strong debut for Eddie Mansfield, I suppose he's going to get himself involved with The Minnesota Heartbreakers. Only fitting with his Continental Lover gimmick.

Those Wild Bills sure don't mind getting themselves DQ'd.

Whoa! Big surprise angle there in that 6 man tag, really didn't see that one coming.

The Chain match main event sounds awesome, would have loved to see that one in real life.

Once I was offered Eddie Mansfield, I knew right away how I would want to bring him in.

I have been throwing in little clues as to what would happen in the 6 man tag for a while now but I wanting to make sure I didn't completely give it away. Nice to know I was successful at least on the last count.

I am losing One Man Gang for a month to a Japanese tour, so I wanted to give him a worthy send off.

AWA All-Star Wrestling for September 30th.

$5000 Battle Royal : featuring Ken Patera, Lord Humongous, Boris Zukhov, Sheikh Adnan Kaissie, Col. Buck Robley, Maj. Cal Manson, Rocky Brewer and Buck Zumhofe

This was distinctly one of the oddest matches in AWA history. For a start, none of the other 7 men seemed at all interested in fighting with anyone besides Buck Zumhofe. They would just stand around and watch while Buck was beat up by the other wrestlers. First up, Rocky Brewer whipped him into the ropes and caught him in a huge scoop powerslam. He then set Zumhofe up for a big shoulder tackle … but then missed him by a mile and went flying over the top rope. Next up were Buck Robley and Cal Manson, who hit a double lariat but afterwards went right over the top rope as well. Sheikh Adnan Kaissie got a running kneelift, but also wound up going out of the ring under his own momentum. Boris Zukhov roughly sent him in for the Hammer & Sickle, whipping him into the turnbuckle and clobbering him in the back of the head with a lariat when he came out of the corner, but in his follow through he went sailing over the top rope. This left Zumhofe alone in the ring with Lord Humongous and Ken Patera. Humongous looked like he broke him in half with an over the knee backbreaker, then Patera got Buck in a Full Nelson and held him in place for a clothesline from Humongous, but Patera ducked down at the last second and flipped Humongous over the top to the outside. Patera then laid a huge shoulder breaker on Zumhofe, then hoisted the battered Rock & Roller to his feet. He slapped him in the face and then pointed as his own chin and dared Buck to punch him. The dazed Buck managed an exhausted right cross on Patera … and Patera acted like he had been blasted with a shotgun and went flying over the top. The winner of the Battle Royale and $5000 … “Rock & Roll” Buck Zumhofe? The crowd cheered but was as bewildered as Zumhofe himself seemed. Mean Gene Okerlund stepped into the ring for an interview.

Mean Gene : Wow, Buck Zumhofe! Who can believe it, you won the big Battle Royal! $5000 ! What are you going to do with all of that money?

Zumhofe : I’m not really sure I understand all of this myself, Gene. I’ve been through a lot lately, and I think it is time for a new start. And it saddens me to say this, but I am going to take this money and use it to move from Minnesota to Tennessee.

At this announcement, all of the other participants in the Battle Royal crowd back into the ring. Zumhofe immediately starts to panic.

Zumhofe : Oh, please, dear God, don’t hurt me anymore!

Patera : Calm down, son, don’t wet yourself. A joke’s a joke, but it’s time to cut the cord. We heard that you were going to be leaving us, so we prepared a little surprise for you.

Zumhofe : Ummm, but I only just decided to …

Patera : That’s right, an auspicious occasion like this had to be marked with a proper send off. We all got you a little something to remember us by. Tell him, Sheikh.

Sheikh : (handing him a suitcase) I have got you a very fine expensive suitcase. I have already packed up the contents of your locker in it so you can leave for Tennessee right away.

Patera : Now that is thoughtful! Colonel, you and the army have whipped up a little something for him, haven’t you?

Robley : That’s right. I’m an old road dog myself, I know how long a trip it is to Tennessee. It can get cold, dark, lonely. So we thought we’d give you this. (Handing a large, rumpled, brown paper bag to Zumhofe.) Tuna fish sandwiches! Because I’m sure you will get hungry on the trip down.

Zumhofe : (suspiciously) What’s in them?

Robley : (looking at him like he is an idiot) Tuna fish, of course. What are you, dense?

Cal Manson : And mayonnaise and chives and lettuce. Plus the special, secret ingredient. (winking at Robley)

Robley : No need to be coy, Cal. Everybody knows the special, secret ingredient is diced celery. No secret about it.

Manson : Damn it, Colonel!

Rocky Brewer : On behalf of the Minnesota Heartbreakers, I am giving you this … a gift card to Denny’s . So you can have some breakfast when you get there.

Patera : Denny’s! Chicken fried steak and eggs with hotcakes and grits! That’s good eatin’! Oh, how I envy you already, kid. Looks like it’s the big guy’s turn.

Lord Humongous towers over the clearly terrified Zumhofe . He then , without saying a word, slowly hands him a large coffee mug with the Minnesota North Stars emblem on it.

Boris Zukhov : In Mother Russia, is custom with opponent leaves, to give him third favorite hat. Here is third favorite hat. Good Russian hat, keep you warm on cold nights.

He puts the big furry hat on Zumhofe, which of course ends up covering most of his head and face.

Patera : Very thoughtful! Even down south, it can get cold at night. I have something very special for my gift. I went to Stanley Blackburn himself and got you this, a letter of recommendation.

Zumhofe : (lifting up the hat so he can read) “Buck Zumhofe was employed by the American Wrestling Association.” (turns over the paper and sees that the other side is blank)

Patera : Inspiring stuff. Hand that over to Jerry Jarrett the moment you get there, I am sure he will find a spot for you. Now no sense dragging this out much further, I am sure you and Jerry Lawler have plenty to talk about when you get there. But as one final tribute, since you are Mr. Rock & Roll, and you are going to Memphis, Tennessee, I think there can be no more fitting send off then an appropriate song. Hit it, guys!

The arena PA then proceeds to play … the theme song to the Carol Burnett Show.

PA : We’re so glad we had this time togetherrrrrr …….

A thoroughly confused Buck Zumhofe slowly walks from the ring, stops, looks over his shoulder and sees the assembled wrestlers cheerfully waving goodbye to him. And so, Buck “Rock & Roll” Zumhofe gracefully closes out his AWA career.

Iceman Parsons vs. Bill Rathke

After that bizarre interlude, Parsons came out full throttle and destroyed Rathke, swiftly executing his moves before hitting the Rumper Stumper for the win. He clearly has his sights set on the AWA American Title and Jimmy Garvin had best keep a lookout for the Iceman.

Eddie Mansfield vs. Mike Vachon

Mansfield came out with all three members of the Minnesota Heartbreakers in tow for his first match on AWA TV and proceeded to beat the stew out of Vachon, easily putting him away with a power slam. The real action came outside during the match while Mansfield was distracted with his opponent. Mr. Olympia appeared out of nowhere and ambushed Jeff Sword, slamming his head into the corner post and press slamming him, ribs first, onto the ringside barricade. Mansfield and the other Heartbreakers rushed over to attack the popular masked man, but he had already made his escape and the damage had been done.

Interview with Jimmy Garvin, Ed Wiskowski & Ivan Putski

Jimmy Garvin gloated over their recent victory at the Milwaukee show and said that he was going to outsmart Iceman Parsons just like he outsmarted Crusher and Tanaka. Ed Wiskowski said that he had been telling Putski for a long time that he was debasing himself by teaming with a low life slob like the Crusher and that Crusher would never be there for Putski when he needed him, but when he finally saw it with his own eyes, that was when he saw the light. Putski, speaking in a slow monotone, said that was right, he now realized that he was meant for better things and he and Wiskowski were the pure, true Polish blood and that Crusher and Tanaka weren’t fit to breathe his air. Wiskowski then declared themselves the Brotherhood Of Poland and all of the other tag teams in the AWA were less than dirt beneath their feet.

The Latin Lovers vs. The Minnesota Heartbreakers (Tom Stanton & Jeff Sword)

Word came out that Sword was far too badly hurt and would be replaced by Rocky Brewer, pulling double duty tonight. Eddie Mansfield joined his men at ringside, manically pacing and on the lookout for Mr. Olympia. This was a fast paced match that looked like it was about to be taken when Javier Cruz set Stanton up for a brainbuster, only for Manfield to grab Cruz’s leg from under him and hold it down as Stanton landed on top of him, giving the pinfall to the Heartbreakers.

The Road Warriors & Moose Cholak vs. The Wild Bills & Eric Embry

To the shock of many in the crowd, the Road Warriors and Cholak were led to the ring by Eddie Mekka. Mekka proved to be a major thorn in the side of the Army, distracting Robley and Manson whenever they looked to interfere in the match. The Bills and Embry tried to isolate Cholak and beat him down, but the big veteran toughed it out and ultimately bulled his way through to his corner, where he was able to tag in Hawk. The Road Warriors swiftly took control of the match , shocking the Army with a new found ferocity as they dispatched Bill Irwin with a double shoulder block. They managed to get a pinfall win over the Bills but now they need to get the win in a title match.

"This was distinctly one of the oddest matches in AWA history." - I'll say. That was a really weird segment. I think Wally Karbo has disconnected all the smoke detectors in the AWA offices now that Verne's gone.

Nice hit and run attack by Mr. Olympia there. Good tactics for a man outnumbered. Looking forward to what you do with your new team The Brotherhood of Poland. Dug the finish to the Latin Lovers/Heartbreakers match.

The Roadies finally get a little bit of revenge on The Wild Bills but it's going to be tough to get their titles away from them considering how much The Wild Bills like to get themselves disqualified.

AWA All-Star Wrestling for October 7th

Eric Embry vs. Dean Ho

Embry seemed quite full of himself after putting Samu out of action recently and was very cocky as he took on the popular veteran. Ho, to his credit, put up quite a fight but , after Ho leapfrogged Embry, the Flamboyant One checked his momentum and caught Ho with a neck breaker. One piledriver later and Embry had the victory.

Ken Patera & Mike George vs. Dominic DeNucci & Tony Russo

With One Man Gang out on suspension, Patera was teaming with the newest member of Sheikh Kaissie’s stable, Mike George, against the incoming team of the Wild Italians. George proved to be an eager student of Patera as the two cut Russo off from his partner and beat him down. DeNucci kept trying to tag in and save Russo but it was to no avail, as George hit a nasty shoulder breaker for the win.

Interview : Mean Gene is joined in the ring by Da Crusher and Prof. Toru Tanaka

Mean Gene : Crusher, I know you must be shocked and disappointed, as we all are, at the recent actions of your old partner, Ivan Putski. He and Ed Wiskowski said some pretty harsh things about you last week.

Crusher : Putski, you broke my heart. I never turned my back on you, no matter what you say. You stabbed me in the back and you know it. You think because you are teaming with some kind of a Prince that makes you better than me? You call me some kind of low class bum? Yeah, I am just a working class stiff … an’ I’m proud of it! I’m as proud of my blue collar roots as I am of the Polish blood that runs in my veins! We may have been friends before, but if you are gonna side with that crumb, then I ain’t gonna hold back, and the next time we meet in the ring , that’s when I am gonna pay you back for what you did to me in Milwaukee!

Mr. Olympia & The Latin Lovers vs. The Minnesota Heartbreakers (Tom Stanton, Rocky Brewer & Rick Patterson)

After the beating inflicted on Jeff Sword last week by Mr. Olympia , it looks like has been replaced full time in the Heartbreakers by Rick Patterson, who came to the ring in full Minnesota Heartbreakers gear and jacket. The Heartbreakers, as ever, were joined by “The Continental Lover” Eddie Mansfield who was certainly not shy about letting his presence be felt, taking shots at Olympia every chance he could. Mr. Olympia did his best to keep his focus on the match and lead the Lovers to victory over the newly resurgent Heartbreakers, and they seemed about to take the victory with Cruz had Stanton set up for the Love Missile. However, when Valentino went up top for the flying dropkick, Mansfield snuck up behind him and shoved him hard off the top turnbuckle , sending him crashing hard to the mat. The ref caught that and called for the DQ as Olympia chased Mansfield from the ringside.

Da Crusher vs. Ed Wiskowski

Da Crusher was joined at ringside by his partner in the Sake & Old Milwaukee Connection, Prof. Toru Tanaka, while the Polish Prince had both Precious and his fellow member of the Brotherhood Of Poland, Ivan Putski. A surefire recipe for chaos if ever there was one, and that is pretty much what we got. After a stretch of intense brawling, Da Crusher had the Crusher Clutch (stomach claw) locked on Wiskowski when Putski entered the ring and blindsided him with the brass knucks. This led to Tanaka charging the ring himself and the ref calling for the DQ as both sides slugged it out for several more minutes.

Interview : Mean Gene is at ringside.

Mean Gene : Ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure to welcome back to the AWA , the pride of Mound, Minnesota … Greg Gagne!

The crowd cheers loudly as Greg makes his way to ringside, smiling and waving to the fans.

Gagne : Thanks for that, Mean Gene. I enjoyed most of my time in Georgia but I’ve got to say, it is great to be back home in Minnesota.

Mean Gene : Speaking of which, some rather disturbing news drifted back here of what you were up to in Georgia. Care to set the record straight.

Gagne : (scowling) Gene, I want to come clean with you and all of the good fans here … when I was in Georgia, I made some mistakes, trusted the wrong people and went down a bad path. I have no one to blame for it but myself. That’s part of the reason I’ve come back home … to clear my head and get a fresh start. I want to rededicate myself to the fans and I promise that I will not let them down …

Gagne is cut off as a large masked man sneak attacks him from the back. The masked man then gives Gagne a swift DDT on the ringside mat before rushing off to avoid security. Mean Gene helps the dazed Gagne to his feet as the AWA officials try to figure out just what happened here.

Hulk Hogan & The Road Warriors vs. Lord Humongous & The Wild Bills

Once again, Humongous attacked Hogan savagely, busting him open above his eye with his hockey mask headbutts then punching him repeatedly on the wound. Hogan and the Road Warriors would ultimately prevail when Animal caught Billy Jack in a power slam, but Hogan and Humongous continued to brawl at ringside after the match had ended.

AWA All-Star Wrestling for October 14th

The Wild Italians vs. Bill Rathke & Great Malumba

The new team of veterans, Dominic DeNucci and Tony Russo, had a tough loss last week to Patera and George, but seemed determined to make up for it against this week against Rathke and Malumba. DeNucci really got the crowd going and got a great cheer when he was able to get the big Malumba up in an airplane spin and got him to submit for the win.

Eddie Mansfield vs. Javier Cruz

Cruz had his partner, Vinnie Valentino, with him at ringside while Mansfield brought all of the Minnesota Heartbreakers. It was a fast paced, back and forth match that seemed like it could go either way until Mansfield caught himself in the ropes to dodge a Cruz dropkick then followed it up with the powerslam for the win. Once again, while Mansfield was celebrating in the ring, Mr. Olympia came out of nowhere, tossing Tom Stanton hard into the ringsteps then disappearing before Mansfield and the Heartbreakers could catch up with him.

Dean Ho vs. Mike Vachon

Ho, a well liked veteran, had a tough loss last week to Eric Embry but had a much better showing this week against the second generation wrestler. Ho forced Vachon to submit to the full nelson to get his first victory since arriving in the AWA.

Interview : Mean Gene is joined in the ring by the Road Warriors as well as Moose Cholak and Eddie Mekka.

Mean Gene : Road Warriors, things sure seemed to have turned around for you in the AWA. It doesn’t seem like too long ago that nobody in the locker room would give you the time of day, but it looks like you have found a couple of good friends here.

Animal : You ain’t fooling, Mean Gene. The days of us shooting our mouths of have gone, and there is nobody we’d rather have by our side than Moose and the Big Ragoo!

Eddie Mekka : Ummm, my name is Eddie.

Animal : Don’t sweat it , Carmine, you are good people in our books.

Mean Gene : Coming up in Milwaukee, you finally have the Wild Bills where you want them, in a cage match for the World Tag Titles.

Hawk : Wild Bills, you called us the Road Runners, but you’ve been running from us since you won the titles. Well now there is no escape from us. And if your Army buddies want to try to break in and help you, we’ve got the big Moose watching our backs, and the Big Ragoo here is a former Golden Gloves boxing champ! (Cue confused look on Eddie Mekka’s face) In Milwaukee, there is no more room for you to run, and we are walking out of the cage with those belts!

Maj. Cal Manson vs. Greg Gagne

In his first televised match since returning to the AWA, Greg Gagne seemed somewhat distracted, looking around him for the masked man who has been plaguing him since he returned. Manson sought to capitalize on this, but Gagne would always end up with the upper hand. At one point, Gagne looked like he would put Manson out with the Sleeper, only to drop it and look angrily around him. He instead applied the Gagne Leglock while looking warily at ringside. Sure enough, the masked man did show up in the aisle while Gagne got the submission victory, only to simply stare at him before leaving for the back.

Jerry “The King” Lawler vs. Boris Zukhov

This was the first match the Memphis superstar had on AWA TV, giving the fans a look at him before his big World title match in San Francisco. For all that he would be facing the crowd favorite Hulk Hogan in that match, the fans still gave him a warm welcome as he took on the Russian Menace. Zukhov gave quite a fight to the King, but Lawler showed the tenacity that helped make him a beloved icon in Memphis as he finally put away Zukhov with the top rope fistdrop.

Hulk Hogan & Mr. Olympia vs. Lord Humongous & Col. Buck Robley

The towering Humongous was partnered with his leader in the Army while the champion would be teaming with his best friend, Mr. Olympia. Hogan was still showing the marks of his past encounters with Humongous as his right eye was still very badly swollen. Humongous capitalized on this, pummeling the injured eye with hockey mask headbutts and big elbowsmashes. Olympia kept trying to tag in and help his partner and friend, but the Army kept him stymied as they worked over the champion. Olympia finally seemed to have tagged in but the ref, whose back had been turned, ushered him back out of the ring. The Army sought to capitalize on this as Humongous held Hogan in place for Robley to hit him with the loaded arm brace, but Hogan ducked out of the way in time and Robley sent Humongous back into the ropes. Olympia rushed over to hold up Humongous as Hogan hit the Axe Bomber on Robley and get the pin. Hogan managed to pull out the victory this time, but has a long road ahead of him to finally get the best of the terrifying man in the hockey mask.

AWA at the Cow Palace , San Francisco , October 14th

Ken Patera, Boris Zukhov, Mike George & Sheikh Adnan Kaissie vs. Dean Ho, Johnny Powers & The Wild Italians (Dominic DeNucci & Tony Russo)

The Sheikh’s crew were especially aggressive with the veteran wrestlers and got the win after a nasty shoulder breaker by George on Powers.

Eddie Mansfield & The Minnesota Heartbreakers (Tom Stanton, Rocky Brewer & Rick Patterson) vs. Mr. Olympia, Stan Stasiak & The Latin Lovers (Vinnie Valentino & Javier Cruz)

Stasiak, well known to the San Francisco fans, was making his AWA debut and got the win for his team with the Heart Punch on Brewer. Mansfield and Olympia looked to keep going at it after the match but were held back by their partners.

Jimmy Garvin & The Brotherhood Of Poland (Ed Wiskowski & Ivan Putski) vs. Iceman Parsons & The Sake and Old Milwaukee Connection (Prof. Toru Tanaka & Da Crusher)

With all of the bad blood going into this match, no surprise that they went at it fist and fire through the length of the match. Parsons looked to have the match wrapped up when he went up top for the Rumper Stumper, but Precious leapt up on the ring apron and sprayed him in the eyes with the aerosol can, causing him to fall from the top turnbuckle. Garvin rolled the stunned Iceman up and the ref, who had missed the shenanigans, counted the one two three.

The Road Warriors (Hawk & Animal) , Moose Cholak & Greg Gagne vs. The Wild Bills ("Wild" Bill Irwin & Billy Jack) , Eric Embry & Lord Humongous

Another match chock full of bad blood and flying fists, with even Gagne setting aside technical wrestling to throw down with Embry. The end came when Gagne got Embry in the Gagne Sleeper, only for the masked man to enter the ring and attack him, leading to the DQ.

AWA World Title Match : Hulk Hogan © vs. Jerry Lawler (courtesy of CWA in Memphis)

This was an epic match up with both men getting a lot of cheers from the fans. They waged a lengthy war, with the advantage shifting back and forth between the two men. Lawler, fierce competitor that he is, pounded on Hogan’s still swollen eye with piston punches while the charismatic Hogan fought back gamely. Hogan looked to pull out the victory when he got Lawler in position for the big leg drop, only for Lawler to roll out of the way at the last moment. Lawler then set up Hogan for the top rope fistdrop, but Hogan in turn rolled out of the way. Hogan seemed like he might at least get a countout victory when he knocked Lawler from the ring with a desperation Axe Bomber, but the King was able to pull himself back into the ring at the count of 9. The two exhausted men ended up just slugging it out in the middle of the ring in a last ditch effort to knock each other out, but the bell rang, signaling a 30 minute draw. In spite of the ferocity of the match, Hogan and Lawler shook hands afterwards and raised each other’s arms in a show of respect.

A Hogan-Lawler brawl sounds pretty sweet. But who gets the hugely over comeback at the end??? Seems like each tag after the first furthered one of your big feuds. Seems like a show that would hold people's attention pretty easily with a lot of fast-paced brawling.

A ton of great contests from the AWA over the last couple of days. Hogan's reign is going to be filled with some big competitors, with an emphasis on the BIG. I have really enjoyed the build of the Road Warriors and without a doubt, they have been sky rocketed to the top, especially in Main Events over Hogan. I also liked the inclusion of Jerry Lawler for his little run. He and Hogan have got some history so this is a nice way to showcase two of the big stars in wrestling right now.
