SOUTHEASTERN CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING TV

Saturday 8th October 1983

Taped in front of a live studio audience at the WTBS Television Studio in Atlanta, GA

Hosted by Gordon Solie and Charlie Platt

The traditional Southeastern Television credits roll as we go to Gordon Solie standing in front of the Southeastern Championship Wrestling banner in the WTBS studio for the first time. The time is so iconic to NWA wrestling, 6:05pm on Saturday. Gordon welcomes all the fans at home and in the studio to another week of exciting wrestling. He informs the fans there has been a merger between Georgia Championship Wrestling and Southeastern Championship Wrestling, and the companies new name will be the latter, Southeastern Championship Wrestling which will span Alabama, North Florida and Georgia. But there is nothing to worry about as great wrestling action will still be coming to all your homes, nothing has changed only the name here in Georgia.

Before we get started with the new era of Southeastern Championship wrestling, he would like to introduce someone to the fans. Out comes a man in a suit, he shakes Gordon hand, and turns to the camera. “Hello everybody, my name is Stanley Blackburn, I am the president of the American Wrestling Association, and I would officially like to welcome, Gordon Solie, Southeastern Championship Wrestling and WTBS to the AWA. The AWA is the premier wrestling governing body here in the United States and is delighted to add Southeastern Championship Wrestling promotion to its association”. Gordon thanks Stanley and shakes his hand as he leaves the set. This is something wrestling fans thought they’d never see.

Gordon then introduces a familiar face in Charlie Platt who Solie says is an outstanding young announcers, and he will be joining him each and every week to call the great action on offer. Charlie says he is made up to work with such a legend. He lets the fans know the taping of our television show will rotate from Dothan and Atlanta weekly, so one week at the WTBS Studio in Atlanta and the second week from the WTVY Studio in Dothan Alabama. He turns to Gordon and says should we get on with the action? Gordon agrees and we go to our first match of the day. But before we do, we have to announce todays main event with is the National Tag Team Champions Butch Reed and Koko Ware will be defending the titles against Southeastern Heavyweight Champion “Bullet” Bob and Brad Armstrong.

We go to the ring where The Nightmares (Danny Davis & Ken Wayne) face of with the team of Rick Mccord and Ron Ritchie. The Nightmares defeat Mccord and Ritchie in sound fashion when Danny Davis hits a Tombstone Piledriver on Mccord followed by the pin in 6 minutes.

=== Advert ===

We return with Jim Cornette and The Heavenly Bodies; Bobby Eaton and Tom Pritchard. Cornette says that his team are not only the best in Southeastern Championship Wrestling but in the AWA, and this Monday in Dothan they will prove that when they take the Southeastern Tag Team titles from Tim Horner and Ricky Gibson. They then make their way to the ring where they defeat Gene Ligon and Mike Jackson in 4 minutes following a Top Rope Alabama Jam to Ligon and the pinful in an impressive showing from The Bodies. After the match The Bodies try and make an example out of Ligon and Jackson by continuing the beating, only for Ricky Gibson and Tim Horner to run down to the ring and chase of the Heavenly Bodies. The match is set for Monday evening in Birmingham.

=== Advert ===

Next up Television Champion Charlie Cook taking on The Torch, Cook who has been having issues with The Nightmares recently. Charlie Cook gets the DQ win over Torch when he goes pins him after he hits a Running Football Tackle at 6 minutes only for The Flame and Fire storm the ring and start to attack Cook only for The Armstrong brothers Scott and Brad come out to even the odds and fight the 3 men back to the studio.

=== Run down of this weeks action in Georgia and Alabama ===

After the break we are joined by “Wildfire” Tommy Rich and Johnny Rich, Tommy says its great to be back in Georgia, and he’s so happy his ban has been lifted due to the merger and he now has his eyes firmly set on the National Heavyweight Title. The title which is currently held by champion Jake Robert who with Buzz Sawyer went to a no contest last night in The Omni. He knows they will settle the score this Friday night at the Omni and he wants the winner. Gordon Solie tells Tommy that’ll he’ll have his chance, as on Monday in Birmingham he has a number 1 contenders match for the National Title against Robert Fuller who he has traded victories with over the past few weeks. Johnny says that’s great news and he knows his cousin can do it. He will also have his hands full this Monday as he faces Jimmy Golden in their rubber match. The cousins make their way to the ring as they are facing off with The Masked Medics. The Rich’s make quick work of the masked team, getting the victory after 4 minutes following a flying cross body from Johnny Rich to Medic #1.

We return with The Armstrong family joining Gordon Solie and Charlie Platt. They talk about their recent issues with The Flame, Fire and Torch. This Monday in Birmingham they will face of in a 6 man war and Armstrong’s promise it will end it there. Bob and Brad move onto today’s action, they will be up against National Tag Team Champions Butch Reed and Koko Ware. They say they have a lot of respect for Reed and Ware but it’s a massive opportunity for them to get more gold in the family. Scott makes his way to the ring as he has a match. Scott Armstrong defeats Jerry Bryant in 6 minutes with a Superkick that caught Bryant off guard followed by the pin.

=== Run down of this week’s action in Georgia and Alabama ===

Buzz Sawyer defeats Josh Stroud with a Running Powerslam at 4 minutes. Buzz Sawyer who has a rematch set for this Friday at the Omni against Jake Roberts for National Heavyweight Championship, Buzz former member of the Gentleman’s Club has gone solo in the last few weeks when he got his eyes set on the National Heavyweight Championship. Following the match Buzz Sawyer goes over to Gordon and Charlie. He tells them and promises Jake Roberts that he’ll be taking that title home next Friday.

=== Advert ===

National Heavyweight Champion Butch Reed and Koko Ware come to the announcers desk and tell the fans they are going to be fighting champions and tonight is just the start of their reign of dominates, there are some fantastic teams here in Southeastern but they are the best and that’s why they have the belts. They make their way to the ring.

Outcome the challengers Southeastern Heavyweight Champion “Bullet” Bob and Brad Armstrong, just as they are about to get into the ring, two men in hooded tops smash to baseball bats across the back of the Armstrongs and they go down to the floor, the two men continue their attack, laying in the boot. They reveal themselves to the fans to be none other than the Texas Dynasty Tully Blanchard and David Von Erich from Southwest Championship Wrestling. They say they are here to become National Tag Team Champions, and as Butch and Koko are such fighting champions they should give them the title match. There are now officials looking over Armstrongs while Von Erich and Blanchard stand over with their bats, waiting for Reed and Koko decision. Reed and Koko agree and the match is on.

=== Run down of this week’s action in Georgia and Alabama ===

We return with the action in full flow, Von Erich and Blanchard are trying their hardest to isolate Koko Ware and work him over in the corner. Everytime Butch Reed tries to get into the ring to help his partner the referee cuts of his route leading to Tully and David using some more underhanded tactics to punish Ware. Finally after several minutes Koko ducks a clothesline and dives for to make the tag and Butch is in and is a house of fire. Reed is cleaning house, Von Erich and Blanchard can’t contain him. Butch Reed has really change the momentum of this bout, as he climbs to the top rope, when from the back runs out Von Erich and Blanchards valet Sunshine who wobbles the top rope and reed comes crashes down. Tully hits a running knee drop on the fallen Reed and covers him, while David Von Erich holds Reeds legs from the outside as Dave Hebner the referee counts the 3 after 12 minutes. And we have new National Tag Team Champions, in the most unlikely circumstance, Tully Blanchard and David Von Erich are the new National Tag Team Champions after forcing themselves into the match by attacking The Armstrong’s, they celebrate as they make their way to the back, while Butch Reed and Koko Ware argue with the referee. Gordon Solie and Charlie Platt run through todays results and remind the fans to be back tomorrow night for “This Week In AWA”.

The first Southeastern episode on WTBS was certainly an interesting one. Started with the big surprise of Southeastern switching sanctioning bodies, with the WTBS now suddenly being the national outlet for the the AWA instead of the NWA. And ended with the unannounced arrival of The Texas Dynasty who took out Bob & Brad Armstrong and ended the show as the National Tag Team Champions.

Add in all the good stuff in the middle like a Heavenly Bodies squash, Charlie Cook vs. The Torch, Buzz Sawyer killing a jobber, some good promos from Tommy Rich and The Armstrongs and this was one hell of a show.

The Texas Dynasty is going to have to get really creative if they win any more belts now though with them already having one for each shoulder and one around their waists.

Great show, but I'm unsure of whether or not Turner would have put that on his network. Even so, lots of great stuff, as mentioned above, as well as a NEW bitter rival for the Armstrongs. Despite the whole allegiance switch I still love this promotion as a fan.

Wrestling is about stirring the pot and you did that today!

Damn right it is. I'm glad some people are starting to get past this notion that all the territories are supposed to be best of friends and peace and love and harmony should rule the 1983 fantasy rasslin world.

Great show, but I'm unsure of whether or not Turner would have put that on his network. Even so, lots of great stuff, as mentioned above, as well as a NEW bitter rival for the Armstrongs. Despite the whole allegiance switch I still love this promotion as a fan.

In early 1984 WWF was on Turners network for a good year, so with big Georgia stars like Bob Armstrong and Tommy Rich I can't see why he wouldn't. It's not a load of northern squashes on their tv now, it's stars that they all know, but under the AWA umbrella.

An influx of huge talent. A major shakeup in the rankings of wrestling. Personal feelings aside, I am wondering what the identity of your promotion will be through all this. You started with the Armstrong and company but now with this influx, where do they stand after the initial burst? I'll tune in to find out.

The identity is whatever id like it too be, it's still going to be southern brawling at its best. I can assure you the style won't be changing, there be some changes but your have to wait and see.

All that's happened is I've changed governing bodies, the AWA is different than the one in real life, hell Nick Bockwinkle isn't even involved. After all AWA is just a name, it's still a Fuller promotion. I wanted a buzz on my first TV, seems to have got it. Would be interested to know people personal feelings? Probably in the general thread...

Robert Fuller who is the number 1 contender for the title, picked Sawyer up for a Piledriver as Jimmy Golden came off the top rope to spike Sawyer down into the mat. The crowd who arent the biggest fans of Sawyer were chanting "Tommy, Tommy, Tommy", clearly wanting "Wildfire" to come and help his greatest rival, but to no success. The Studd Stable continue their attack...

We join Gordon Solie and Charlie Platt who welcome the fans to another week of great Southeastern Championship Wrestling action. Almost instantly before Gordon could continue, The Studd Stable come out with blowing party horns and clearly celebrating Robert Fuller being the new number one contender to Buzz Sawyers National Heavyweight Championship. Jimmy Golden tells Gordon that Fullers run this state and he should only speak when spoken too, or he can go back to Atlanta, he then address’s defeating Johnny Rich one last time, and that Johnny Rich better go to the back off the queue. Ron Fuller goes on to say it’s been too long since the Stable held any gold and that’s going to change, next week Jimmy Golden will be challenging Charlie Cook for his Television Championship which he knows Golden can win. Robert Fuller tells Solie and Platt he will be taking wants rightfully his, when he goes up against Sawyer. But due to the paper work not being processed, the match will happen a week Monday, which is one weeks grace for Buzz. Charlie Platt interrupts and says that Stanley Blackburn has sent a telegram stating that this Monday in Birmingham, Robert Fuller and Jimmy Golden will be in action, as they will be facing off with National Heavyweight Champion Buzz Sawyer and a partner of his choosing in tag action, Robert Fuller grabs the telegram and rips it up. He grabs hold of Solie and tells him it doesn’t matter who is Buzz Sawyers partner is because the Studd Stable rule as they all walk off blowing their party horns.

=== Advert ===

Former Southeastern Tag Team Champions Ricky Gibson & Tim Horner open this week’s action with a dominate win over Tony Falk and Bill Howard in 4 minutes when Tim Horner hits a Running Dropkick on Falk and covers him for the win. After the match they walk over to join Gordon Solie and Charlie Platt, they say sorry to the fans for losing the titles this past week and not being able to regain them last night at the Omni, but they have asked Stanley Blackburn and been given a special 3-on-2 tag team title match this Monday in Birmingham which has been agreed, Jim Cornette likes to get involved so much that this week he gets the chance. They go on to say that the match will be for the titles but Jim Cornette will be a participant and there will be no where for him to run. The fans are cheering as they can’t wait for Cornette to get his comeuppance.

Eaton and Pritchard get the win in 7 minutes when Bobby Eaton hits an Alabama Jam from the top rope on McCord followed by the pin. Cornette who joins Solie and Platt for commentary after he has introduced his team. Cornette mainly wines about having to get in the ring this Monday while on commentary, that he’s not a wrestler and Stanley Blackburn was a clown for booking him in a match and maybe he’ll run for AWA president. Following the match Eaton and Pritchard join their manager Jim Cornette, where they tell Gibson and Horner that on Monday they put to bed this issue and they will be moving onto bigger and better things.

Buzz Sawyer steam rolls the ring and just mauls Ligon before the bell sounds, he punishes Ligon for about 25 seconds with stomps and kicks in the corner before throwing him to the ground and climbing to the top rope and launching himself with his head first into Ligon and covers him. Buzz full of adrenaline goes over to Solie and Platt and says that on Monday in Birmingham he has a little surprise for The Studd Stable when everyone sees his partner. As Buzz goes to leave the studio, The Studd Stable jump him from behind and continue their attack from last night at the Omni. Reed and Ware make their way to the ring and the match gets started. From the bell is an all-out brawl where neither team really gains control; the battle is in and out of the ring, its absolute chaos here in Dothan, finally the end comes when yet again Sunshine toss’s her purse into the ring for Tully to use on Koko Ware behind the referee’s back to knock Koko Ware out and he covers him for the 3 count at 13 minutes. i wonder how long the Dynasty keeps the titles in Southeast after they lost them in Southwest? :) One thing about this project is seeing how people develop feuds. The promos in between the squashes seems like it would have been a pretty common way of doing things on TV at the time.

Loved the match ups! Reminds me of when I was a kid and I think this is why so many of us are involved. The territory system and especially Southern Wrestling was all about brawls and surprises. I get wait to find out who the tall man in the dark jacket was. Loved seeing Rich come back from the sneak attack!
