Trish Stratus vs. Molly Holly - Unforgiven 2002

Molly won a rematch and they feuded for a few months, involving Regal and the Dudleys among others. This is right after HHH-RVD and this crowd is DEAD as a result.

Trish is more cautious, having learned from the last title match. Trish with a full nelson and hammerlock and Molly with her usual good nasty hair pull. Molly with a wristlock standing while Trish is grounded, again watch Trish's first rate in pain selling. Trish kips up and goes for a hammerlock, reversed into a fast fireman's carry for 2 but Trish counters that with a rollup for 2 herself. Trish with a nice armdrag and a swank Japanese armdrag to follow up then a decent dropkick as Lawler puts over how much better Trish has gotten as a wrestler. It's about time. Swinging neckbreaker gets 2. Odd screw up from Molly as Trish lifts her with Molly supposed to deck her to take over. She takes too long though and Trish holds her there for 2 seconds too long. Trish was by no means perfect and couldn't always improvise off a mistake, esp at this point.

Trish kicks Molly out of the corner but whiffs on the elbowdrop for Molly to take over. Nice snap suplex from Molly. Molly tosses Trish to the floor and Trish takes it really well getting a legit sympathy OOH from the crowd. Molly rams her into the steel steps with Trish using her elbow to create a legit good sound effect for more sympathy. Whip into the guardrail and Trish tries to fight back only to get hair pulled down to the floor again. Molly wraps Trish's arms around her own neck and chokes her out for the submission spot of this match. It runs about 45 seconds and is well done but should NOT have been done with this dead crowd. Girls should have just gone all out throwing fast moves for 6 minutes to try and wake the fans up. Trish with a judo throw to escape. Nice dropkick to Trish's face as she tries to get up.

Trish with a cradle and a rollup that she doesn't do too well and Molly counters with the tripping Trish into the bottom rope throat first they always do. Whip to the corner but Trish flips out of a backbreaker into the bulldog for 2. Good spot. Molly hammers but misses a clothesline and Trish hits the chick kick for 2. Trish charges the corner but Molly kicks her hard square in the chest to send Trish flying. Trish counter the Molly Go Round with a crotch drop and goes for the stratusphere but Molly has learned and counters that by grabbing one leg and hanging Trish upside down in the corner. See how one match builds on the next........like real wrestling should.

Molly hits her handspring into the corner, butt instead of elbow to sort of pay off the fat butt story. That gets a near 2. Trish look done and Molly whips her into the ropes and grabs her waist for something but Trish counters that into a high bulldog for the pin. I got what they were going for, with Trish out of it again but this time busting out a new variation of her finisher to win but it kinda fell flat. Both women tried but were noticeably off and the DEAD DEAD crowd did not help. Then again Trish had to work after HHH matches a lot.

2 and a quarter stars. The KOTR match was much better, both were off for this one.

Trish Stratus vs. Molly vs. Victoria - Raw September 2002

The night after. Transitioning Trish from Molly to Victoria. Victoria had beaten Trish in her debut then lost to her in a rematch but this was before they really had a feud.

Trish's celebration title pose as she is announced is great, shows real joy and you can see how much having the division being built around her means to her. Trish should be toast here given this is basically a handicap match. Trish and Victoria start to brawl as Molly makes her entrance. Molly sends Trish flying with the hair pull, she really should have cut her hair given this happens twice a match from Molly lol. Trish is whipped to the corner but Molly catches an elbow and Trish tosses Victoria to the apron but Victoria lands on it and decks Trish. Bodyslam from Molly to a flipping legdrop from the apron from Victoria. Good spot. Molly holds Trish but Victoria's kick hits Molly and Trish rolls up Victoria for 2. Nice backslide from Victoria but Molly kicks her off.

They argue and Trish charges but they double elbow her down easily and go back to work on her. The hammer away and Molly hits the elbow as the crowd chants loudly for something. Victoria follows up with a shoulder to the corner as Trish sells this double team beating well. They take turns slapping her to good sympathy and are doing nice heel work here. Trish ducks the double clothesline and drops them both with a flying one that gets a nice pop. Forearms and Trish hits her swank neckbreaker on Victoria then decks Molly with the chick kick. Whip on Victoria to the corner is countered with an elbow and Victoria goes up top only to get hit with the stratusphere. It's like trying to powerbomb Kidman. Trish goes for the stratusfaction bulldog to win but Molly lift and tosses her over the top rope and straight to the floor. Holy jeez. That's a 120 lb woman taking that bump. Trish is gutsy.

Victoria gets 2 on Molly. Replay shows Trish landed RIGHT on her hip, how did that not injure her? Standing suplex on Molly and Victoria whiffs on the top rope moonsault. That was taken out of her arsenal fast as it was Lita's move but VIctoria did it better not always landing her opponent's knees. Both women stagger up, Trish comes in and goes for the same rollup as the KOTR match. Again Molly goes for the tights but Trish was expecting that and kicks Molly off into Victoria knocking her down and letting Trish roll Molly up for the 3. See the way 3/4 of the matches are worked around the move used to end the first one. That's smart wrestling, WWE Women in this time COULD do that too.

2 and three quarters stars. This is the best women's triple threat under 5 minutes you could have possibly had. Trish took a just insane bump here, crowd was into everything and the women all worked their tails off. Should have gotten 10 more easily on a PPV.

Trish and Molly had a few more singles the next year and a really good heel vs heel on Heat in early 2005 but as far as a real feud goes this was it.

Trish Stratus vs. Victoria vs. Jazz - WM XIX

Story here is Trish is screwed. She feuded with Victoria for six months prior to this. Victoria was bigger and stronger and more vicious and used that to beat her at Survivor Series for the title. In the rematch Victoria debuted the Widow's Peak, played up as an instant death killer move and won that too. Then Steven Richards become Victoria's sidekick and helped her beat Trish in a great Chicago street fight to make it 3 straight in singles match between the two. Right after that match Jazz returned (to a huge look of fear from Trish, kudos to her showing that for a rival) and destroyed her, knocking her out of action for 6 weeks. Trish returned with a real fire and wanted payback. Her chances of getting it though are slim. This is like Sting vs. Champion Vader with Harley Race AND returning Lex Luger. It's basically a 3 on 1 with Trish fighting the two top women heels and their manager all at once. And one of those managers is a wrestler twice her size btw.

Jazz with a vicious forearm from behind to Trish to start and then she dumps Victoria. Great standing dropkick from Jazz to Trish gets 2. Nasty nasty forearms to the side of the face and Jazz locks in a modified STF. Jazz releases to knock Victoria out of the ring but Trish attacks with a Thesz press and punches. Best she's done that move and it's still not that great to be honest. Trish hammers away and makes Jazz eat boot on a charge but when she climbs outside to go to the top rope Victoria pulls her down. And in breakneck speed Trish crashes to the apron face first and to the floor in a heap in another WTF is a 120 lb woman doing taking these bumps in "piss break matches" (to quote a critic).

Victoria then dumps Jazz and Trish hammers her till Victoria saves with a forearm from behind. Flip over the ropes legdrop from Victoria to Trish and Jazz saves. Sweet Jazz legdrop on Trish gets 2 till Victoria saves. It's the theme of all triple threats, the underdog has a chance because the other two wrestlers EACH wanna win. Nothing new but done well. Jazz and Victoria tease issues but instead attack Trish hitting a weird looking flipping double shoulderbreaker. See it yourself, it did look nasty for Trish at the end. Jazz attacks Victoria who counters with a nice off the ropes powerslam. This is just the divas version of bomb throwing but it's done well and they have less than 10 minutes again so bomb throwing makes sense esp given the feuds this was blowing off over a year. Victoria hammers Jazz in the corner but Trish counters with a rollup into a full bridge that's really really well done esp given how smaller she is to Victoria. It gets a nice pop from the crowd too.

Victoria clotheslines Trish who does an oversell that almost goes into a flip but instead is just a very good back bump. Irish whip and Trish hits a martial arts kick to reverse, best she's ever done that move too and a SOLID vicious looking clothesline esp given her size to come back. Jazz clobbers Trish from behind and hits a really nice running powerslam into a driver for 2. The heels go nuts on each other (Jazz - What the hell are you doing LOUDLY lol) and attack in the corner. Trish rams them into other and then does a double noggin knocker to a nice pop as the crowd gets the idea, Trish finally getting revenge for a year of all the stuff both have done to her.

Trish hammers both with forearms until Victoria holds her for Jazz to finish her off. Spin kick nails Victoria instead and Trish rolls Jazz up for 2. Good fast victory roll from Trish gets another 2. Chick kick (with Jazz putting her hands up to protect the hit, I mean come on how much can Trish do in real life lol) to Jazz gets 2. Nasty knee from Victoria but Trish counters a top rope move with the stratusphere. Against face Trish going to the top rope is as risky as powerbombing Kidman lol Trish nails Jazz with a clothesline and chops away on Victoria. Victoria is knocked to the floor but Jazz blocks the chick kick and locks in her half boston crab, one of her finishers back then. Again Trish can sell submissions with great sympathy.

Trish almost makes the ropes so Jazz converts to the STF bending Trish's body in what looks like it legit hurt somewhat. Richards saves by dumping Jazz so his GF doesn't lose her title. Victoria rolls Trish in, rolls her up with the tights and Trish uses the same reverse and roll of the tights (with both women pulling each other's shorts/pants down a bit) to show Trish STILL has ideas to work that simple spot in her matches a different way each time. Jazz clotheslines Victoria down and puts Trish in her lifting double chicken wing then slams her from high above face first with Trish selling a nose injury. Victoria hits a NASTY superkick on Jazz that Jazz sells as a legit KO. GORGEOUS top rope moonsault from Victoria misses.

Victoria manages to dump Jazz to the floor soon after and Richards attacks Trish with a chair who ducks and Richards clobbers himself. The announcers sell what an idiot he is. Trish then hits HIM with her stratusfaction bulldog with Richards selling like a total pro, they easily get 10 feet in the air for the most insane one ever done (inc Kidman's) to a HUGE pop that brings the crowd to its feet and Trish taunts him like she's finally gotten payback for months of grief. Widows peak looks to finish but Trish is finally able to counter, sliding down Victoria's back. Victoria kicks and whips Trish in but Trish hits a killer chick kick square to the chest which Victoria sells like a KO and an exhausted Trish, with nothing left in her, covers for the win and regains her title to a good pop.

If the match has a flaw it's that nothing was done to Jazz to warrant her being out on the floor for the last minute. I SO want to give this 4 stars as it's the one of the best face overcoming insane odds stories I've seen from WWE as Trish's win is both inspiring, gets a reaction and makes sense at least in how it resolves stuff with Victoria AND keeps everyone strong. But despite that insane stratusfaction and incredibly stiff shots and good bombs throughout it's not QUITE there so I'm giving it 3 and 3 quarters stars. Only better matches that night were Angle-Lesnar and Michaels-Jericho.

Trish Stratus vs. Jackie Gayda - Raw November 2003

I think this is Vegas and was the roulette wheel thing leading to a bra and panties match. I said I'd cover every singles opponent Trish ever had so I guess I can cover this one. After this I am going to cover the Lita feud, which was certainly her most memorable opponent, in detail as it ran nearly both's entire career off and on. Their tag the year prior is legendary for bad matches and proof that in 2002 Trish was not ready to carry someone totally inept. She could get bad but not spectacularly bad stuff with Stacy and Terri at that point but Jackie Gayda was too much

Jackie is with Rico doing an update for the Adrian/Linda gimmick. This was during the start of the Jericho storyline with Trish which I feel is great stuff and which they basically wrote together as much as they could to avoid the writers destroying it.

Jackie attacks from behind to start. Whip and sunset flip from Jackie where she tries to pull Trish's pants down but Trish rolls through and pulls her shirt off. Jackie uses the drop toe hold into the ropes that seems to be Trish's version of Bret's chest first into the buckles spot. Jackie chokes Trish out with her shirt, usually great selling from Trish, Jackie is at least trying here. Tree of woe and Jackie kicks away. Trish is helpless so Jackie easily strips her. Well the psychology for THIS sort of match makes perfect sense I will give it that. Trish chops away but her whip into the corner is elbowed. Jackie climbs to the top rope and Trish goes for the stratusphere. Jackie blocks and tries to strip Trish's pants but Trish hooks the legs harder and flips her over with the move. Not bad really.

Rico tries to interfere so Trish tosses him in and strips him. The pecking order seems to be that Trish is capable of handling the lowest of the two (Rico, Richards) on the male heel side. Jackie goes the kick, hits Rico so Trish strips her for the win with a rollup.

This was a comedy match but had at least one decent spot in it. 1 and a quarter stars. Which is JG's career highlight I think.

Trish, Test and Albert vs. Lita and the Hardy Boys - Fully Loaded 2000

The story here is that Trish cost the Hardys a match with her team and Lita attacked and knocked her out in revenge. So they had a six man on Smackdown where Trish made her in ring debut. She played a totally inept clueless cocky heel manager who had literally no chance to even hurt Lita let alone beat her. So T and A took Lita out and Trish pinned her. The feud escalated for months with Lita beating Trish like a drum every chance she got but never getting her full revenge. Instead Trish pushed our off a table through a ladder from the top tope, then cost her a title match against Stephanie then whipped her multiple times to set this up.

I'm going to focus on Trish in this match as the vast majority of it is the men. I will say this T and A were great opponents for the Hardy Boys, being able to bump them around great for their bombs and sell the stuff when needed. The whole feud actually worked really well for teenage girls. Lita was their role model, being the cool girl who's an outsider and hangs out with the teen heart throbs but clearly is also reasonably wholesome and decent. Trish is the uber hot busty total blitch in high school who happens to have a few jock friends who act as bullies for her cause of her killer body. Said body makes every teen girl uncomfortable and envious and they can relate on several levels as to why Lita hates Trish. And the crowd is INSANE for this match, it is the opener in a hot period for WWE in general but everyone brings their A game and makes it a forgotten great PPV opener.

Trish's outfit here is insanely hot, pink sports bra and shorts with black boots. She'd never wear it again sadly. She's also pretty oiled up as well. I guess I can live with all this as she's a sex symbol and a heel and not a worker at this point at all. Her strutting and flaunting are good, but nowhere near what they would be 4 years later. This is about 4 matches into her career and she's never done a single offensive move at this point but can bump really well for Lita.

Lita charges Trish to start, blocked by Trish who casually struts to Lita over that fact. Little heel manager stuff. That's another factor in Trish's case. Unlike most of the heel managers who were hot women she added a lot and was not afraid to constantly play a cowardly wimp and get hers. She did some even better stuff with Christian and Tomko years later as a manager. Crowd starts a Lita chant man was she over in 2000. Jobbing her out to the insanely not over RTC Ivory was such a big mistake.

Trish does a great little heel taunt when Test boots Matt, her cocky heel stuff is great for this, you really want to see Lita knock the smug look off her face. Trish tags in to a big pop and slaps Matt silly but misses a second one and hits Test. Matt tags Lita and Trish runs faster than a speeding bullet to avoid getting her butt kicked. Cornette and Heenan would be proud. Hardys and Lita hit a triple suplex on Test and Trish to an insane pop. Crowd is just eating this up.

Eventually Lita faces Test doing well using Rey Mysterio vs Nash tactics until she gets powerbombed. Trish's jumping up and down and yelling tag me tag me has to be seen as it is awesome. Trish gets 2 then debut her great bulldog. Irish whip gets reversed and Trish goes up but gets blocked. They do a superplex and Lita hits the moonsault for 3 to a HUGE pop.

Afterwards Trish attacks Lita with a belt whipping her down and strutting away, with Lawler commenting on how insanely hot she looks as she is sweating bullets. Lita got her revenge later that night whipping Trish during Val Venis/Rikishi. She cleaned Trish's clock in a strap match the next night but lost due to Stephanie interfering to transition to that feud.

3 and a half stars mostly for the guys performance. But Trish and Lita did everything they did well, the heat was nuclear and Trish played her cowardly wimp heel role who's learning a LITTLE bit how to wrestle well. They next moved Trish on to Chyna who squashed her so bad the Trish-Lita stuff looks like 50/50. This was the match that made me see something in Trish and I followed her career, actually watching WWE past 2002 mainly for about 5 people of which she was one.

They'd have a mini feud in October of that year with Lita winning and again feuded in the summer of 2001 with both as babyfaces over Trish kissing the Hardys. Lita won that as well. They had another match in November of 2001 the night after Trish's first title victory, won by Trish with Matt's help (with Trish unaware of it) as they were building Matt to turn heel. They fought again the night after WM XVIII as relative equals for the first time with Lita winning clean there. Then Lita had her neck injury, was out 17 months and Trish took her spot as the top babyface of the division.

That was it for any issues until 2004 when Lita came to rescue Jericho from Trish and Christian. They feuded off and on for the rest of the spring and summer with Lita taking time off with the pregnancy angle. I'll cover the Raw match next and the PPV rematch and then finish with Unforgiven 2006 for that feud. Those are 2 of Trish's 4 star matches IMO.

Keep in mind that as this feud goes on there's a theme. Face or heel Trish CANNOT beat Lita 1 on 1 fairly without any help. That's important to the final payoff.

Gonna cover one of the 3 short Trish-Lita matches earlier mentioned

Trish vs. Lita - Smackdown 2001

Both are faces but Trish had made out with both Hardy Boys for saving her from Big Show earlier. Lita is mad about this. Both women have to team up to face Stacy and Torrie at Invasion and this is to "settle their differences". Trish has gotten better but is still being booked as decent but not on Lita's level so i am expecting a semi comp squash. This is before Trish took 3 months off and got better as well.

Trish comes off as trying to be nice and Lita comes across as pretty jealous in the pre match stuff but Lita is still more the face clearly. Lita talks trash and shoves Lita who's kinda coming off as a bully here to be honest. Odd dynamic. Trish slaps back and Lita knocks her silly with one punch establishing again, Trish has no real shot here. Flying clothesline by Lita which Trish sells like death. Corner whip and a hair pull with Trish doing a lot of work selling this. Trish baiils and does the UT necksnap (badly due to one of them) to come back.

Trish with a kick and a good snap suplex. Stomp and a vicious soccer kick to the ribs from Trish who's now playing heel clearly. Trish hammers away to big Lita chants from the girls in the audience. Trish with her hangman's choke and a top rope bulldog for 2. Lita punches back and Trish rakes the eyes. Lita hammers back, hits a 2nd flying clothesline, twist of fate and moonsault for the pin. Lita does her stuff well and gets huge pops but she doesn't really cooperate with what her opponents have done. At some point she goes into superwoman mode hits all her stuff and wins. It's a lot like 96 Shawn Michaels actually.

Credit to Cole for trying to get over how much Trish has improved. A 2 star match. Technically better than the Stacy match but Lita's psych was not there at all.

Trish Stratus vs. Lita - Raw December 6 2004

There's an absurdly complex amount of backstory to this but it basically amounts to this, Trish has been making Lita's life a living hell for months. Lita attempted revenge at Survivor Series but was so out of control she was DQ'D almost right away. She did break Trish's nose, necessitating a face mask. This was pretty much booked as Lita's last title shot and Trish had run through every other opponent at this point. It was also the first time the women main evented a Raw. And it wasn't an average main event either they built it up with video packages tracking the 4 and a half year rivalry/friendship the two women had.

In ring storyline has always been that Lita is just a better wrestler but Trish being a nasty vicious sneaky heel who's turning borderline sociopath (and gets worse after this result) will DO anything to win and Lita's not been able to find a way to truly counter this and defeat her in the most personal way possible, taking away her championship. This almost reminds me of a women's version of Savage-Steamboat to be honest, but the finish is booked smarter IMO.

Lita clearly wants to take Trish's head off but has cooled off enough to get that the title is the best way for revenge, you can see in the looks they exchange pre match. Yup WM III. Lockup and the hate is so great they actually tumble to the floor together rather than give an inch. Trish attacks to start and Lita goes for the turnbuckle smash, blocked by Trish who returns the favor, being a methodical striker at this point. Trish with the chop and backdrop but Lita kicks to counter. Clothesline is countered by the Ma Trish and Lita looks at it and simply kicks the leg away to cover for 2. Building the theme Lita is better and smarter when she is focused. Nice Russian leg sweep from Lita for 2 but Trish rakes the eyes.

Trish charges but gets backdropped right to the floor. she broke her fall just a tiny bit or that would have been serious. Lita with an absolutely sweet running suicide dive through the ropes to nail Trish. That one bit her a month later. The way Lita landed on the replay looks like she hit Trish square in the face. And as a hurt LIta crawls back into the ring Trish removes her face mask and grins pointing to it, revealing the injury was a work designed to take out one of Lita's best offensive weapons. Her taunting and look of just pure evil as she does this is awesome. A star for that alone given it had a month buildup. Then when Lita comes over Trish drops her with it beyond the ref's view. This is great great heel stuff. Trish pats herself on the back as she enters and then has Lita struggle to crawl up her body to get up with Trish just looking down in total contempt.

Trish hammers away and NOW her punches look good, showing hatred with each blow. Trish pounds her and uses her corner hangman's choke. LOOK at Trish's face. This is an all time top ten look of pure hatred from a heel in wrestling history. Lita snapmares Trish off with a nasty back bump off the top and goes for the sleeper but Trish rams her back into the corner. Trish snapmares and locks in a full nelson. Lita escapes and hammer back whipping Trish into the corner. Trish goes for the handspring to counter so Lita tosses her to the apron where Trish lands and they brawl some more. Lita gets the better of that and hits a top rope superplex for a huge pop and kudos to both for doing that at all, let alone so well. That gets 2.

Lita goes for a clothesline as they stand, Trish ducks and hits a vicious chick kick for 2. Half the people in the front row are standing. Piss break match indeed. Trish hammers away with force and goes for the ten punches in the corner countered with a powebomb from Lita for 2. Moonsault is countered with a shot to the back, Trish puts Lita on her shoulders, Lita counters with a victory roll for 2 And darn close. They get up and Lita goes for her snap DDT which was her finish then but Trish holds the ropes to block and Lita eats mat. Trish puts her feet on the ropes to try and get a cheap win but Lita powers out.

Trish hammers away fast and goes for the stratusfaction but Lita toss her back. Disoriented Trish is easy prey to Lita's twist of fate. Exhausted Lita climbs to the top rope and hits her moonsault for a 3 count. She had literally nothing left there storyline wise but the last move worked.

This wasn't as technically complex as say Savage-Steamboat (to name a match I THINK influenced it) but it was amazing and told a great story. Lita won by using absolutely everything she had and was totally spent at the victory. She overcame the most nasty cheating heel she had ever faced and beat her clean with her best moves. For some odd reason this reminds me of the best Memphis matches in its heat. Lita's victory pop is just amazing too.

One of the best 8 minute matches I have ever seen, if not THE best. 4 stars all the way.

Trish Stratus vs. Lita - NYR 2005

Rematch time. Trish had crossed over into sociopath mode, basically telling the world Lita won ONCE using everything she had and Trish was gonna end her career in the rematch. Scarily she darn near kept that promise. She also showed the gloves were off as she SQUASHED Victoria the Raw before. I mean beat her pillar to post (and Trish not letting her opponent take more than half a match was unheard of) and cut a promo right after saying that's what she did and was going to do to Lita.

They shoot each other looks of pure hatred as a big Lita chant starts right away. Man Lita was so over. They lockup and Trish wins that but lets go. The little looks they give each after that are nice. They lockup again and Lita casually dumps Trish to the floor and goes for a Thesz press off the apron to the floor. And she lands right on her knee and it gives out. She was out for 18 months in the ring from that injury. Yeah that's not good.

Trish rolls her back in and pins her for 2. Match is OVER but they are trying to see if Lita can continue obviously. Trish hammers away, keeping her character which has got to be tough with her real life best friend in horrible pain right in front of her but she's a pro. Trish with an ankle lock to the good knee for 2 and Lita punches back but can't even stand up. She's done. Trish chokes and kicks the good leg as they try and buy Lita time to recover. They do a GINGER Irish whip spot (with Lita not actually moving) and Lita goes for the DDT but Trish kicks the leg and then hits a chick kick to regain the title.

1 and a quarter stars mostly for the professionalism, Lita trying to get herself back together and Trish's post match gloating which has to be seen. And that was it for the that feud as they moved on to LIta training Christy. I have heard Trish was booked to go over here and the blow off would be a ladder match at WM FWIW.

They would stay out of each other's way when Trish came back in 2005 as a face and Lita was a heel for a while until the feud started up again when Lita beat Mickie James for the title and announced Trish's retirement to mess with her. Leading to their last and best match which I will cover tomorrow.

Trish Stratus vs. Lita - Unforgiven 2006

So the two had stayed away from each other when Trish returned as a face. Lita was a really good heel but she definitely had a tendency to chew and spit out her opponents, particularly the Torrie Wilson types. I feel that's definitely part of Trish's case as the NA female GOAT, no matter how untrained her opponents she tried to give them something and make them look decent. Lita didn't do it that way honestly. Indeed her beating Mickie James for the title was a glorified squash and meant that the Trish-Mickie feud never really got a blow off except for Trish's last Raw match.

Lita announced Trish's retirement early to humiliate her to set this up and Trish challenged her to be her last match, and for the title. In her home town of Toronto. LIta beat Trish in a tag match before this, with Edge spearing her several times during the build up but this one on one. Given Vince's preference for having people, particularly Canadians, job out in their hometowns and the policy of putting someone over as you leave I saw this one as going either way.

Video package to set this up really lays out the story, Trish wanting to retire on top and facing her arch rival one last time for the championship that meant her whole career to her. Also Trish has never really beaten Lita cleanly (at least without help or Lita too hurt to continue) but that's not really brought up. Lita's heel work is certainly good but she was much better suited as a babyface. After the Edge-Matt Hardy situation that was NOT going to happen however. Trish's energy is first rate and JR does put over that Trish can break Moolah's record tonight with a win. Nice thank you Trish chant to start.

Lockup to start and Lita with some physical shoving and a vicious slap to start. She played a bully well. Whip to the corner and Trish rebound with a solid clothesline for 2. Trish with her handspring whirlybird move and Lita bails. Lita won't come back in so Trish charges and hits a flying Thesz press to the floor. Given that's the SAME move that took Lita out for 18 months that's pretty risky but Lita being taller makes it work fine. Get a big pop as Trish hammers away. Lita goes to the eyes to take over as the replay shows what a great job Trish did with that move. Lita goes top ram Trish's head into the steps, Trish elbows to block, leaps up and uses the stratusphere to flip Lita over and to the floor in a great bump. How many people invent better ways to do their trademark stuff in their last match on this continent?

Back in and Lita uses the ropes to force the ref to back Trish off. Trish comes back and Lita kicks, hammers and drills her face into the mat to take over. Knee over the ropes to choke and Trish has actually toned down her selling a bit from how she usually sells a choke. Think it still works given the fact that she's playing the ACE and not the underdog at this point in her career. Good leaping knee to the back and Trish sure sells that. Snapmare and chinlock and Trish powers up with elbows then tries to run and gets dropped with a nasty hair pull. Lita actually has some of Trish's hair that she tosses away after that one. Lita hammers in the corner but stops to talk trash to the referee and Trish reverses her.

Trish hammers away Austin style and add the corner foot choke, her face showing fire. Chops follow. Insane hand licking on the last one. Mini stinger splash but Lita elbows a second one and goes up top. Yup blocked for the Stratusphere but Lita's ready for that and they trade punches on the top rope and they fall to the apron and the floor in a heap. Lita climbs to the top rope so Trish leaps to the apron and leaps on her as they keep brawling. Lita falls to the apron again but grabs Trish's hair and VICIOUSLY beals her back to the center of the ring. This is a 120 lb woman taking these bumps.

Lita goes for the moonsault to finish, something that she abandoned once her turned heel but it makes total sense given the stakes and the fact that it's probably beaten Trish like 50 times counting house shows. Trish rolls out of the way and Lita splats. Trish goes for the stratusfaction so Lita lifts and as they run tosses her casually over the top rope to the floor. Trish rolls with it but this is is some seriously insane bumping for someone her size in her last match.

Cover gets 2 and Lita pounds away. Ref checks on Trish with her legit selling she's out of it. Lita arrogantly lifts her up, her smug body language here shows how totally the roles have been reversed. Good snap suplex follows. Soccer kick and Lita puts Trish's throat on the bottom rope then leaps up and hammer with a series of knees. Lita slaps her down and talks trash mocking her with a come on and hit me as Trish is out of it. Trish looks up and turns from KO'D to total rage and clobbers Lita.

Trish with some forearms and a whip countered with a Russian leg sweep. Took a little bit but I've never had a problem with wrestlers not being as crisp late in a match. Lita hammers away again with more nasty punches and an arrogant cover gets 2. Lita with the sleeper, Trish powers and counters a clothesline with her neckbreaker. They trade hard serious forearms and punches, Trish wins and they do the whip into the corner stratusphere spot. Not sure they should have gone for that one again to be honest. I guess it makes sense that Lita is a top rope user, that's one of Trish's best moves and Lita is more tired now. Anyone care to comment? Trish gives a great get the F up to Lita and knocks her head off with the chick kick for 2.

Eye rake from Lita and she goes for the DDT but Trish blocks and sets for the stratusfaction bulldog. Lita uses the ropes to block and lays down on Trish to cover using the ropes. Ref catches it and Trish sunset flips her to reverse. Instead of going for the pin Trish stands and says something to either Lita or the crowd as a parting farewell. Dunn's expert camera work leaves me clueless as to what it is.

Trish then bust out the sharpshooter to a crazy pop. They give it an awesome struggle with Lita crawling and coming inches from the ropes and Trish pulling her back in. Lita taps and Trish releases it right away and drops, showing she had nothing left. Crowd pops big on that and Trish getting the title and just totally falling apart emotionally at what she's accomplished and done after six years of trying is such amazing feel good moment. And getting a great ovation as she does her farewell with a four corner lift of the title to say goodbye.

Seriously who ELSE ever won their title in their home town against their arch rival their entire career in the WWF in their last match? Bruno Sammartino cannot say that. Hulk Hogan cannot say that. Bret Hart cannot say that. Ric Flair cannot say that. Shawn Michaels cannot say that. Steve Austin cannot say that. I seriously doubt Rock or Taker will get that finish. I could see them doing that with Cena and Boston booing him out of the building.

It is the ULTIMATE storybook ending and one of the best feel good moments WWE ever did. This is one of my ten favorite matches to watch on an emotional level. Nobody ever overcame the odds Trish did to produce the quality work Trish did in WWF/E that I can think of at this time and Vince gave her a reward ending he's never given any of his top stars. And if anyone argues that was because she was a bathroom break worker and nobody even cared...........well I respectfully disagree.

4 and a quarter stars. Trish went out with her best match. Little things mentioned above and the fact that it's only about 12 minutes prevent a full monty but as a moment and a finish, IF you care about the people involved it's a 5 star moment for sure.

She got a hell of a send-off... especially when you compare it to Lita's retirement match, which happened just two months later. She lost the match, lost the title, pinned clean in the middle, and then for some damn reason CrymeTyme comes out and starts selling her dirty underwear to the fans. Ya know, sometimes I'm glad WWE went PG.

I really need a barometer on what you think a five star match is. How many five star matches have their been this year to you?

Like I said it's a 4 and a quarter star match. Give me some matches and I'll give you my opinions on them but I probably in general skew higher than most people.

For instance here's a match I think is 5 stars that not many do - Savage vs. Warrior WMVII which is the all time feel good moment in wrestling for me.

As to how many 5 star matches there have been this year, well keep in mind I haven't caught any Japanese stuff FROM This year as I have so much old stuff to catch up on. And I don't watch TNA. I'd say the second Bayley-Sasha match was 5 stars, the first was 4.75 as was Lesnar-Reigns, and that frankly might have been 5. Reigns-Sheamus was probably 4.25 from Raw but some of that is due to Vince. Maybe a lot actually.

As for Lita's finale, yeah that was pretty bad. BUT it was just two months later and they could hardly run the same finish again. Plus she's a heel and the fans hated her legit for screwing Matt. Her losing would have been enough though and then maybe turning on Edge and leaving a face ala Andre at WM VI.

That shouldn't be an issue here ;)

Trish Stratus vs. Mickie James - NYR 2006

So Mickie debuted in October saving Trish and Ashley from an attack by Torrie, Candice and Victoria. She revealed herself to be a huge, as in psycho stalker insane huge, Trish fan. One of the little things I found funny was Mickie talking about growing up watching Trish's best matches with her "grandpappy". Evidently in WWE continuity Trish had been around during the days of Papa Shango and Max Moon. Anyway the storyline here was actually quite clever, because Mickie played her character very well, alternating between a lesbian subtext (that frequently became the main point of the story, and sort of bit Trish come WM 22) and dedicated uber fan. In essence she became probably someone the majority of the audience could relate to. Trish was booked as the female John Cena at this point, so it was a delicate situation. They also hinted that this was all a game to get inside Trish's head. One subtle thing that showed it was working, on two straight PPV's Trish had a lot of trouble with opponents you would think she could handle (Victoria, Melina) and needed Mickie's help. After I cover the WM match I will go into how I might have booked it to fix the crowd problem that occurs there (unless you think it's just the Chicago crowd's fault and I DON'T) and that plays a big part.

The actual match................can't remember how Mickie got this title shot but here you go. She is still in uber fan mode here.

Trish comes out first. This is basically babyface vs. babyface. Handshake offer from Mickie and Trish pulls her in to basically stare her down saying "we're not friends now if you want my title" and Mickie looks a bit intimidated and confused. Nice character work. Trish with a headlock into a wristlock and Mickie cartwheels up and gives herself a big smile so Trish powers her down to the mat with ease. Establishing the idea, one person sees this as two friends having a fun match, the other sees it as dead serious. Mickie with a headlock and hammerlock combo, working both holds well with Trish really selling. There's a subtext to this feud that Mickie is actually the better wrestler throughout but her emotions mess her up. Again kudos to Trish, even when she's the female ace she has no trouble making opponents look better than her if needed.

Trish counters with a headlock of her own and Mickie fondles Trish just a bit to escape, disgusting Trish. It was done very subtly by WWE standards I will give them that. This feud under Russo would have been a far different thing. They go back to a hammerlock reversal spot, with Joey Styles focusing on Mickie's ability to go hold for hold. I am not usually a big Joey Styles fan but he does by far the best job of calling divas matches seriously and figuring out the storyline behind each and every move. I honestly think Trish's career would be even better remembered than it is if not for some drooling nitwit barely calling her matches (Lawler is in my top 10 GOAT FWIW but he was usually unbearable in women's matches in WWE until recently).

Fireman's carry by Trish and Mickie bridges out into an Oklahoma roll for 2. Trish with a whip to the corner, countered with an elbow by Mickie who goes for a hurricanrana. And they botch something really bad with Trish not going over and instead sort of blocking the hold into the pin that comes after a powerbomb for 2. Not sure what the heck happened there but it's awful I will fully admit. Trish even puts a foot on the ropes but Mickie powers her out to the floor. I guess Trish is playing subtle heel tonight. Mickie offers Trish back in the ring but now they are eyeing each other more carefully with Mickie clearly getting angry a bit and Trish giving her a big cocky grin.

Huge shoulderblock by Mickie just flattens Trish. Mickie taunts "That's what I am talking about" and goes to run the ropes so Trish just viciously grabs her ankle dropping her FAST to the mat face first. Really good stuff here. Mickie gets up PISSED and misses a forearm, with Trish returning the favor. Mickie fires back and you can really here every blow with the crowd legit oohing and ahhing at the stiffness. Trish wins that exchange and whips Mickie in only to eat 2 boots. Mickie climbs to the top rope (uh oh) but looks concerned for Trish's selling (Called by JS) and Trish goes for the stratusphere. Well clearly she was lying about watching all those Trish Stratus matches. It's like someone claiming to be a huge Ric Flair fan and being shocked he went for the leg lol. But then Mickie grabs the legs and powers out, tossing Trish back inside the ring as the announcers gets over who is playing mind games with whom. Mickie goes for the DDT in the corner, blocked by Trish who kicks her down. HARD ap chaki kick from Trish knocks Mickie for a loop.

Trish goes for a half baseball slide half dive through the ropes Mickie ducks and to avoid crashing on her feet Trish adjusts and splats back first on the floor. Big Let's go Mickie chant from the front row. Instead she plays with the belt for a minute before throwing Trish back in. Back in Trish ducks a clothesline and drops Mickie with the Thesz press as Coach explains how sidetracked Mickie looks. Did these two call any more shows together? They're not that bad honestly. Trish hammers and chops away as the crowd is clearly behind Mickie now. Mickie with a back kick and she goes to the top rope. This time the stratusphere works. An insane spinebuster sell that would make Arn Anderson grin ear to ear for 2 follows. Mickie with a solid kick to the face from below. Mickie goes for the stratusfaction bulldog, Trish does everything she can to block it but fails and gets hit. Mickie takes to long to celebrate however and Trish kicks out. Man they are setting up the "if Mickie gets her head on straight Trish is toast" story of WM 22 so well here.

Trish goes for the bulldog herself but Mickie throws her off. Mickie goes for a spinning kick, Trish ducks and whallops her with a chick kick for 3. And listen to the sound of the kick connecting.

There's a LOT of great stuff here in storyline, selling, setting up a future match etc but it's also a lot of bomb throwing and too short (and it feels like it really did need more) and there's a big botch early on. I'm gonna go with 3 stars for this match. I've seen worse botches in Vader matches everyone praises to the hilt.

WM match and their last Raw match (Feud never really had a finish due to an arm inury from Trish) will follow

Trish Stratus vs. Mickie James - WM 22

This was the rematch. The storyline played out for about 2 months after NYR with Mickie getting more and more crazy in her attempts to win Trish over, and Trish getting rid of her friendship only for Mickie to come back and save her, then turn on her at SNME. Mickie went into full blown stalker mode. There was a bit of a problem here with Trish remaining the face and WWE's fanbase. Since it was Trish denying them getting physical and that's what most of the audience wanted to see she became a de facto heel. That or the fans really liked Mickie, had enough of Trish with 15 months as champion and wanted a change. Or it was the Chicago crowd being pro heel. Or some of all 3 but in either case Trish gets BOOED out of the building during most of this match.

Be curious to hear what others think of this.

Mickie as a psycho heel was great. It's a shame that Trish's retirement and the huge heat Lita was getting dictated a title change from Mickie to Lita and a Mickie face turn as soon as Trish left, because this storyline never really had a proper payoff and was one of Trish's best feuds. Probably her best.

Pre match interactions and expressions set up the story clearly, now it's Mickie in Trish's head with Trish frustrated, angry and off her game from wanting to clobber her opponent. MIckie by comparison is cocky and relaxed. Trish tries to do her pose with the belt to no reaction. Mickie attacks, cockily hitting and slapping Trish who nails her with a sharp elbow. Hard forearms and the Thesz press punches combo follow. Kicks and Trish chops away on Mickie. Mickie tries to comeback with a spin kick but Trish catches it and DROPS her hard, forcing Mickie to do the splits. That didn't look fun and got a nice OOOOH from the crowd. Trish nails Mickie with a dropkick from behind to send her splattering to the floor in a heap. Never saw Trish really work Terminator style before this match. Trish goes for the chick kick on the floor and posts her leg as a result. Nice idea but a second of delay telegraphed it. That was Trish's fault.

Mickie with a kick to the ribs and posts Trish's knee. They exchange some hard forearms with Trish selling her lack of mobility well. but Mickie with a low dropkick to the knee to take over. Mickie whips the knee and Trish's selling is just great here, she sells each hold and blow very well. Let's go Mickie chant starts. Mickie wraps the leg around the corner as JR acknowledges Mickie's support. Half crab and they put amazing passion into the hold, both screaming like nuts. Mickie continues to dissect Trish's knee. This is actually the NYR 2005 match with Lita with Trish playing Lita but not really hurt so they can actually do stuff basically.

Leaping stomp to Trish's knee trapped in the ropes looks better than it sounds. Mickie does a slow turn and pose to insane cheers. Ankle torque follows with amazing work and Trish counters with a headscissors to HUGE boos. Trish fires back with forearms and a clothesline and her selling is first rate, affecting each and every little move she does really well. She does the clothesline spot but it's so much more than the standard "do the move as usual, then sell a bit of pain" that was WWE style. High spinebuster as JR sells the defiant fans angle throughout the night. Trish with a stinger splash attempt meets boots in the chest. Trish doesn't run while she does the spot at all instead she just leaps into the air hoping the impact from hitting Mickie would break the impact. This might seem like basic stuff to AJW fans, but very few people outside of WWE and NOBODY trained in their system was doing this stuff at the time. Mickie goes up top and Trish foolishly goes for the stratusphere but Mickie whips the bad knee to send Trish flying in a loop. Posing and huge cheers for Mickie follow.

Trish barely powers out of a pin. Another try at the half crab is countered by Trish to a small package for 2. Mickie hauls Trish up and goes for the DDT but Trish shoves her into the corner. Trish charge Mickie leaps and goes for a headscissors with the sexual innuendo clear from her expression so Trish spins her around into a running powerbomb for 2. And Trish only takes one step with the good knee so it's not much of a run but the impact is tremendous. Trish is angry and hammers away. Trish dodges a clothesline with the Ma-Trish altering it enough to show she's hurt. Mickie turns around and gets booted and Trish goes for the bulldog. Mickie counters with a crotch grab, sold by Trish as pain not just the innuendo. WWE Network edit. Trish LEVELS Mickie with a forearm. Mickie kicks up into her head, stunning Trish and LEVELS her with a mick kick for 3.

This was great great stuff. Trish put over her new rival here in the biggest way possible. Mickie dominated the match, took Trish's leg apart, forced to wrestle on one knee, used her desires to throw Trish off mentally at the right moment and knocked her out for the pin. THAT'S how you put a new heel over.

Best singles match that night by far. 4 stars and thumbs way up.

Unfortunately Trish suffered a legit shoulder injury early into the rematch. They had a few more after this on Raw, but none really stood out. Even Trish's final Raw match was too short and just a highlights reel of the first 2 PPV matches they had honestly. It's a shame Mickie wasn't able to rise to Trish's level after her retirement as Trish did everything she could to make that possible.

I don't think it was just being sick of Trish, as I don't recall many other cities turning on her around the same time. Mickie was doing the "crazy hot lesbian" gimmick so of course she was guaranteed to receive a certain amount of cheers, but the crowd that night in Chicago took it to a whole different level. That was the same night that both of the lead babyfaces were heavily booed in the men's world title matches; when you've got the crowd going completely against the grain in at least three different segments, that's more on the crowd than it is on the company or the product.

That's what Ross alludes to testily as well during the match, that it's a weird crowd. And no Trish didn't get booed on any Raw appearances before or after this that I remember.

I would argue the HHH-Cena build was almost designed to produce the result of Cena being booed though to be honest.

IF WWE were a much more mature and socially liberal company I would have booked the Trish-Mickie feud to go as it did with Mickie making a save at SNME. Then have Trish cut a promo with Mickie in the ring about how she thinks she's a bit nuts but has thought about it and nobody's every fought so hard or tried to be by her side in her entire life and she wants to accept Mickie and offers her a hug, keep it ambiguous enough and then have Mickie take her head off with a kick and reveal she doesn't want to be with Trish Stratus and never did, she wants to BE her and will be once she beats her. They sort of did this but having it be Mickie who denies the lesbian action the fans wanted to see would have made a lot more sense as she is the heel here.

Trying to figure out what to cover next. I sort of glossed over the good singles matches with Victoria and Jazz (though I think the Victoria ones are much better) and maybe some tags as Trish could do both face in peril and house of fire hot tag worker equally well.

I really want to find Trish's first real match as a face against Ivory 8 days after WM XVII. That whole period is odd as Trish is involved in a hot angle at WM, faces Stephanie in a DQ finish, gets hurt by Chyna and then sent back into the lower card so fast it makes your head spin. Rumor had it at the time it was due to heat from her barking like a dog as if that was her fault. Interesting note as the first Trish action figure was supposed to come out mid 2001 and was a 3 pack with Jericho and Benoit suggesting her managing them when they feuded with Austin and HHH was on the table.

Also another fun Trish fact. Nobody ever kicked out of the Stratusfaction bulldog. EVER. In her whole career.

And her last singles match EVER was a loss to Vickie Guerrero which just makes me sad. Much as I l'd like to see her come back and go 20 with Sasha I doubt it's in her anymore.

Going to cover a couple of Trish promos I really like.

Trish - December 2004

This is backstage with Todd Grisham the week after dropping the title to Lita. Trish calls Todd Tom and could care less. He corrects her and she offers to smack the glasses right off his face. Trish points out she's the best women's wrestler ever and that Lita had to kill herself just for one win. It's only about 2 sentences of the standard stuff of getting a title back though her "any more questions TODD" is good stuff. But it really gets across she's gone into total psycho mode and will do anything to get the title back. I feel kinda sorry for what happened because in the rematch Lita hurts herself for 18 months out, in ring at least.

Trish - May 2004 - This is the Highlight reel during the Jericho feud (some of her very best stuff ever as a character). It's a highlight reel but instead of Jericho Trish's silhouette comes out with Tyson Tomko behind. Trish's body language and acting are perfect cocky heel stuff, just slightly over the top but always enough to make you legit hate her. I cannot say it enough, it was darn hard for a gorgeous woman to get WWE fans to boo her at that time but Trish did it brilliantly. Lita too but that was real heat over Matt and Edge. This was just Trish's awesome acting and the storyline. She was literally running rings around HHH at this time as a heel.

She makes a joke about the French Canadian audience making no sense to her. That's some good cheap heat lol. Claims she is surrounded by 10,000 Frogs to huge heat. Was that still a way to get Montreal angry by this point? She wishes Christian well, being the worst part of Hollywood elite annoying in the process. Brags about being a 3 time Babe of the Year and questions why she is lowering herself doing this. Talks about a great highlight to show and they replay Tyson powerbombing Jericho through a table. She calls 911 to report the robbery that Trish and Tomko just stole the show. Sounds corny as heck and is to an extent but it works well in context. You just want to see someone punch the smug look off her face. Then makes fun of JR. Is it me or does her JR voice sound more like Crocodile Dundee?

Tells Tomko she enjoys his work with a look that............well you can get the subtext. Warns everyone not to be a problem but Jericho's pyro goes off and he attacks. He goes toe to toe with Tyson Drops him and Trish tries to attack him but gets put in the Walls (really wish Lita had been involved week in and out to prevent male on female violence) but Tyson makes the save with a huge boot to KO Jericho.

Press slam through a set on its side folding chair that doesn't give follows. Tomko places the chair to choke Jericho with it and Trish casually sits on it and poses to huge heat. She talks trash and they leave. Trish channeled a perfect high school situation throughout this feud. She was the uber hot girl that every guy adored until one day you did something to upset her or just realized she was a total blitch. Lita played the loyal friend to oppose her. This was perfectly aimed at their audience of the time and showed (as did the entire feud) a real understanding of the audience and its life that was far superior to the writers (Trish and Jericho more or less wrote their own program) work.

Good stuff. Trish got how to get over as a beautiful female heel AND not be Superwoman (Hello Stephanie) better than any woman in WWF history. Other good stuff to watch from this era would be her first promo and "match" after getting a cast vs Nidia, calling out Christy Hemme a few times, calling out Lita's infidelities with Kane to start that feud, and even her calling out the Diva Search girls for a volleyball match. Yes she found a way to get some heat doing THAT.

Trish was one of the best, if not the best overall performer on Raw from WM 20-21 by a long stretch.
