April 12, 1984

TV Taping (Airing April 14, 1984)

Roanoke, VA

Civic Center

Opening intro segment

Interview with Pat Patterson & Ray Stevens with their new manager Paul Jones. They put over winning the titles and give a lot of credit to their manager, Paul Jones.

Rock n’ Roll Express debut as they defeated Tony DeVito & Jason Knight.

Quick chat with the RnR Express. They talk about arriving in MACW, focusing on the US Tag Team Titles and eventually the NWA World Tag Team Titles

COMMERCIAL BREAK

We return to have David Crockett interview The Fabulous Freebirds. They discuss handling their business at Coastal Clash, defeating the Giant and his two little buddies. They brag about being the best three man unit in the business. They also talk about taking all the gold in MACW, starting with trying to get back the TV title. Next week it’s Michael Hayes vs Barry Windham, if he can survive his defense today.

Terry Taylor defeats Italian Stallion.

He arrives at the set to talk with Tony about his recent loss to Randy Savage and not recapturing the US title. Terry talks about wanting to face off with Mr. Fuji because of the interference in that match. That match has been signed for tonight’s event in Fisherville, VA.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

We return with slow motion footage of Skandor Akbar and his men burning Sivi Afi. Tony tells us that he is still out of action, with no time table for his return. His face was burned, but they were more concerned with a vision issue. That’s all the word they had on that incident. Skandor Akbar is facing a punishment from the officials at MACW, but nothing has been announced as of yet. Akbar comes out with Jules Strongbow and says that MACW better be careful what they deem “punishment” for his actions. He was provoked to do such an act. They had better consider that. They storm off the TV set.

TV Title Match, Barry Windham retains the title by defeating Jules Strongbow

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Interview with Ric Flair on regaining the NWA World Title in Houston, Texas last weekend. He tells the audience that Ricky Steamboat is certainly a top player in the world, and he had one great night. However, when you’re the Nature Boy, you’re THE top player everynight. That’s why he was able to regain the title a week later. He has proven once again he is the man around the world. Anyone who wants to step up, he’ll accept that challenge.

As Flair struts off the set, Randy Savage appears and gets onto the set. He tells everyone that he’s the number one man in Mid Atlantic, and he’s the US champ and that makes him the number one challenger to the World’s Title. He’ll be the first man to put his name into that hat Ric Flair. He wants a shot at the gold.

Tony and David react to that statement by the “Macho Man” and end the show

Pretty good outing here for MACW. The only thing I would do differently it put a little bit of formatting in the text to show the difference between segments. Outside of that, I am interested in the story of Savage and Flair with Flair bailing on him. I am also very interested to see how the RnR fit in the scheme of things for the next couple of months.

MACW Highlights - Late April, Most of May 1984

4/28 MACW TV: Barry Windham and Randy Savage contract signing is interrupted by the Freebirds. ‘Birds want all the titles, including Barry’s TV Title AND Randy’s US title. Freebirds attack both men and leave them laying.

Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat have interviews on their big rematch in Roanoke, VA on May 12th.

Skandor Akbar takes over the end of the show, his men beating up a bunch of wrestlers (jobbers) and proclaiming he will own MACW after fining him $15,000 the week before.

Matches included:

Chris Champion beat Dusty Wolfe

Rip Rogers defeated Frank Williams

The Moondogs defeated The Scrap Irons and Terry Gibbs

Kamala defeated Tony DeVito, then the cluster with Skandor Akbar happened.

5/5 MACW TV: Replay of last week’s show’s end airs. Then we see a one-camera shot from that evening’s big event in Shelby, NC. Kamala vs JYD in a Bunkhouse Brawl. JYD gets the win with a big headbutt from the second rope. But after the match, The Strongbow’s arrive and beat down JYD. They hold JYD down and Akbar burns him in the face with the fire!! The clip stops right as the fire explodes. MACW officials have suspended Akbar for 30 days, and he has been barred from all shows until then. His men were fined $5,000 each for their help in the matter. JYD is out of action for the time being.

Barry Windham has accepted a 3-week TV Title challenge against the Fabulous Freebirds. Each week he retains the title, he earns $5,000 from the defeated wrestler. If Barry wins the series, he gets to choose two partners to challenge for the Six-Man Titles inside a steel cage. If he loses, he loses the TV title and cannot challenge for either the TV or 6-Man titles while the Freebirds hold those titles. These matches will be held on the brand-new syndicated show NWA World Wide Wrestling. As Barry is being interviewed, Randy Savage approaches with Miss Elizabeth. He tells Barry that he wants the Freebirds too, and that he will have Barry’s back. If and only if he is named as one of the partner’s inside the steel cage. Barry just shrugs him off and leaves, not trusting Savage.

Sam Houston and Terry Taylor challenge Ray Stevens and Pat Patterson for the US Tag Team Titles.

Matches for this week included:

Sam Houston & Terry Taylor defeated The Scrap Irons

Mr. Fuji defeated Jason Knight

Ricky Steamboat defeated Dennis Stamp

May 6 World Wide Wrestling TV: Barry Windham defeated Buddy Roberts in the first of three series against the Freebirds. No interference here. Just a nice match with a clean finish after about 8 minutes.

Moondogs defeated Tiger Chung Lee, Hiro Saito and Toru Tanaka (w/ Mr. Fuji)

Interview with The Rock n’ Roll Express discussing wanting to earn a shot at the US Tag Team Champions

Randy Savage defeated Dennis Stamp in 6 minutes.

Interview with US Champion Randy Savage discussing his US title match on house shows against Pedro Morales and his disgust for the Freebirds.

Ric Flair defeated Lanny Poffo to end the show.

May 12 MACW TV:

US Tag Team Champions Pat Patterson & Ray Stevens (w/ Paul Jones) discuss all the teams coming up and challenging them for their titles. They have the most important championship in all of MACW and they will be taking on all challengers. First, tonight in Roanoke, VA, they will take on Sam Houston and Terry Taylor.

Patterson & Stevens defeated Dusty Wolfe and Italian Stallion in tag team action.

Ricky Steamboat defeated Tony DeVito with a Cross Body Block. He then goes to the set and has a few words for Flair about their contest billed as One Last Chance. If Ricky Steamboat can not win the World Championship tonight, he will not be able to challenge Ric Flair for the title again.

Sweet Daddy Siki defeated Frank Williams. He has some words for a recovering JYD, telling him to heal and get better. He has to get his revenge. David Crockett informs everyone that JYD wasn’t as injured as Sivi Afi was, and JYD will be back soon.

Randy Savage defeated Jason Knight in single’s action. He then had some words for anyone challenging him for the US title and wanted to see the Freebirds fall flat on their faces in their challenge to Barry Windham.

May 13, World Wide Wrestling:

The Vachon’s defeated Hiro Saito and Tiger Chung Lee in a fun tag team opener.

Interview with Ric Flair. No mention of the title match with Ricky Steamboat. Flair just talks about being the best world champion EVER. Flair isn’t carrying the World title either. Simple promo, leading fans at home wondering what happened in Roanoke last night.

The Grappler’s team with Rip Rogers to defeat Salvatore Bellomo, Lanny Poffo and Chris Champion.

Barry Windham interview. He tells the viewing audience that Kendall Windham is back to action, after taking a few weeks off to heal an injury. Kendall tells him that he has his back with the Freebirds and to not trust Randy Savage.

Barry Windham defeated Michael Hayes in a TV Title match to retain the championship and earning himself another $5,000 from the Freebirds. This time, after the match, all three Freebirds attack. Kendall rushes the ring, but the numbers game is too much. Both Windham brothers laying on the mat as we end this show.

May 19 MACW TV:

The Moondogs defeated The Grappler’s in tag team action.

Tony and David discuss the controversy from last Saturday evening’s NWA World title match. Ric Flair retained the title when he got intentionally disqualified. This was Steamboat’s last shot at the championship as long as Flair held the title. However, the NWA Board of Directors are not happy the World Champion getting DQ’d intentionally to keep the title with this important stipulation on the match. They are reviewing the incident and will have a ruling next week.

Ric Flair enters and cuts a livid promo on the NWA and the Board of Directors. No one said he couldn’t get DQ’d! That shouldn’t matter. Steamboat didn’t get the job done, he’s done with Steamboat and moving on to more important matters. Flair storms off the set, super pissed off.

Ray Stevens and Pat Patterson defeated Tony DeVito and Frank Williams. Paul Jones then discusses the tag teams shooting for the US tag team titles, and how no one is worthy of challenging the champions. They are fighting champions, however and will accept all incoming challenges.

Kamala defeated Italian Stallion. The Strongbow’s accompany him to ringside. All three takes turns kicking him after the match. Jay Strongbow comes to theinterview set and tells MACW they all made a huge mistake in not believing Akbar. Whatever he wishes, they will carry it out. They don’t care about the money anymore. It’s about getting the respect they have earned.

May 20 World Wide Wrestling:

Mr. Fuji and his boys come out and have a talk with Bob Caudle. Fuji says they are going to start hurting people. He likes other wrestler’s pain. His boys are to injure their opponents before they are defeated. This leads to Hiro Saito defeated Dennis Stamp. Saito uses a vicious cross armbreaker for the submission. Fuji seems pleased.

Pedro Morales defeated Rip Rogers. Pedro then discusses earning a US title opportunity and plans to make the most of it.

The Freebirds arrive on the scene and taunt Barry from the ring. Terry Gordy demands that this match have a longer time limit. Barry Windham arrives at the entrance with his TV title around his waist and his brother standing next to him. Barry agrees to the no-time-limit stipulation. As they start to walk to ringside, they are joined by Randy Savage, without Miss Elizabeth. The US champion decked out in full wrestling gear and his $15,000 rope. He grabs the house mic and says he is ready to have Barry’s back for this last of the three matches in this TV Title series. Barry and Kendall just look at him with disgust, but Barry takes the ring for the contest.

Barry Windham defeated Terry Gordy with help from Randy Savage. The match is a really fun, well worked, well paced brawl. Terry gets the advantage and works over the champion. This is pitched on commentary like a Lumberjack Match. As both men have two corner-men for the contest. As Barry begins his comeback, the Freebird’s try to interfere. Kendall tries to get Savage to help him cut them off, but Savage doesn’t seem to care. Kendall jumps on the ‘birds anyways, so a 2-on-1 beat down occurs. Barry sees this and rushes to the floor to help his brother. Savage quickly removes his rope and climbs the buckles. He leaps and crushes a revived Terry Gordy with a double axehandle that sends Gordy to the mat. Savage once again climbs the ropes quickly and this time leaps with the devastating leaping elbow smash. Savage then slips out of the ring and helps the Windham’s. Barry slides back into the ring. Gordy is hurt, but has started to stumble to his feet. Barry leaps and drills Terry with a bulldog take down for the win. The end of the show sees the Freebirds livid at losing the series. They are hurt and on the floor away from the entrance. The Windham’s are in the ring, celebrating the win, but staring down at Savage who holds his United States Title over his head as we end the show.

May 26 MACW TV:

David and Tony have a huge announcement. Tomorrow (5/27) in Winston Salem, NC, there will be TWO huge steel cage matches. First, Ricky Steamboat’s last chance at the NWA World Title while Flair is champion, will happen once again, but inside the steel cage. No DQ’s, Flair vs Steamboat. Secondly, based on the World Wide Wrestling TV Title series, The Fabulous Freebirds will defend their NWA World Six-Man Tag Team Titles against Kendall Windham, TV Champion, Barry Windham, and NWA US Champion, Randy Savage!

Opening Match:

Lanny Poffo wrestles Rip Rogers to a 10-minute time limit draw.

Ricky Steamboat comes out and discusses his rematch with Flair tomorrow in Winston Salem. Steamboat isn’t a big fan of steel cage matches, but he gladly accepts this one. He wants to settle the score. Steamboat wants to see who really is better than the other. Which man is truly deserving to be called WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION. That happens tomorrow.

Match Two:

Kamala and the Strongbow’s defeated The Scrap Iron’s and Italian Stallion. The usual beat down after the match happens. The Strongbow’s just yell to the crowd how they will all be owned by Akbar when he returns.

The Freebirds arrive to the set to discuss the steel cage match tomorrow night. They are none to pleased that Savage interfered in their business. David Crockett says they brought that on themselves by attacking him weeks ago. They dismiss that fact and say that he will be ended inside the steel cage tomorrow. They will destroy three careers and they will take both of those single’s titles with them.

Match Three:

Chris Champion defeated Dusty Wolfe. Kamala and the Strongbow’s arrive once again and beat both men down. Kamala gives both men the big splash as referee’s arrrive to remove them from the ring.

Ric Flair is interviewed about tomorrow night's title defense. He is screaming pissed at the NWA. He cannot believe that they have mandated he defend his title already. He just out lasted Steamboat just a couple of weeks ago. And on top of that inside a steel cage?! What are they thinking. He is the best talent in the world. But even he cannot control what happens inside the steel. What if he gets hurt? What will happen to the World Title? What will happen to his natural good looks?! Flair then laughs it off and says he’s the best wrestler in the world. He doesn’t worry about these things, he’s the Nature Boy! He’s the NWA World Heavyweight Champion, brother. He didn’t get to be the best by accident. Flair will prove it tonight, when he ends Steamboat’s title chances, and maybe even his career.

May 27 World Wide Wrestling

Mr. Fuji and Toru Tanaka defeated Lanny Poffo and Chris Champion

Sam Houston and Terry Taylor defeated The Grappler’s

They have a post-match interview. They simply say they are building up their tag team win/loss record and want to challenge for those US Tag Team Titles.

The Moondogs battled Pat Patterson and Ray Stevens to a double-countout to end the show.
