[2016-07-14-WWE-Cruiserweight Classic] Kota Ibushi vs Cedric Alexander

Recommended Posts

I enjoy Bryan as the enthusiastic commentator that marks out to everything, not really sure if he's better than Liger and Millano Collection AT in that role. This is a pretty good showcase for how little it takes for a match to be called an all time classic these days, a couple of hot nearfalls that the crowd bites on and it's ****465/887 match of the decade candidate everywhere. The sequence where Ibushi botched the Frankensteiner was pretty ugly but outside of that this was a strong, well paced junior match. The early matwork wasn't anything special or even remotely interesting but helped set the pace and the selling inbetween the moves was crucial to it as well. Loved how insane the bumping here was, the Missed Moonsault dive spot was perfect as a transitional spot since Ibushi almost always hits it and the match didn't overstay its welcome. ***1/2

An excellent cruiserweight match, the type I haven't really seen since the glory days of WCW. I liked how they used Ibushi's credibility and built-in name value as a great worker to build to things like his first kick, but also to get Cedric more over than he would be for being so competitive. Not a lot to say about this one, but the action was great and Cedric had a career-making performance. ****

After few minutes of feeling each other in a variety of waist locks and arm wringers, they hit and neat sequence that ends in Cedric getting hit by a kick to the chest that sounded like a shotgun blast. Ibushi's strikes are put over big time as Mauro and Bryan talk about his time in NJPW. Cedric is more than able to keep up with Ibushi and hits some a beautiful-looking Michinoku Driver and Brain Buster during the final moments of this match. After trading 2. 9 falls, Cedric falls to Ibushi's sit-out Last Ride finisher. This was lacking in storytelling and character building, as they opted to put on an exhibition chocked full of jaw-dropping spots and sequences, but what an exhibition this was! ★★★★¼
