Spotlight: WCW 1994 - Part 5
We're back with more WCW in 1994!
TAGS
Stars And Stripes vs. Bad Attitude (09 03 1994 WCW Saturday Night) - Fun match! I think Keirn & Eaton are the reason it's enjoyable. Bagwell does most of the work for his team. Patriot just kinda cleans up at the end but hey, it's fun TV stuff. I don't think Bad Attitude has had one sub par match.
Cactus Jack vs. Kevin Sullivan (09 10 1994 WCW Saturday Night) - A super quick "match" but Sullivan does a tope, Jack does his elbow to the floor and we get a glorious interview at the end.
Cactus Jack vs. Kevin Sullivan (Fall Brawl 09/18) Hulk hogging the PPV more... they are replaying when he gets hurt at Clash of the Champions and ugh we gets years of shit like this. Anyhow someone has a sign that spells out Hulk and it hasn't aged well.

WTF world was this person living in? It's a pro wrestler not the Dalai Lama! So let's get to two actual wrestlers no one would confuse with a Buddhist - Cactus Jack & Kevin Sullivan! Anyhow, this was a really good brawling match and *spoilers* Cactus Jack loses but does he really go out with a bang (bang). Foley really took some harsh bumps here. It's a silly statement 31 years later but, they messed up getting rid of Mick. Along with Regal, he has been the most entertaining and unique wrestlers that WCW has shown in '94. No one can combine the brawling with the energy, character work & toughness that Foley did.

Arn Anderson, Bunkhouse Buck, Col. Robert Parker & Terry Funk vs. Brian Knobbs, Dustin Rhodes, Dusty Rhodes & Jerry Sags (Fall Brawl - Wargames 09/18) - Holy cow! Dustin & Arn tore things up in the beginning segment!! It was so creative & violent. It's probably my favorite part. Terry Funk was excellent using his boot and ring to his creative advantage. Bunkhouse Bunk continues to add nothing but a warm body. This is return to form for the Nasty Boys and I felt they could unload on their foes. Parker & Dusty were there for the finish but things really picked up out of the approaching monotony and ended in a fever pitch. Meng going berserk ringside was exciting too! Great spectacle match. Great end to a very solid PPV. WWE vault has it for you below:
STEAMBOAT
Ricky Steamboat & Dustin Rhodes vs Arn Anderson & Bunkhouse Buck (Main Event 09/04) - Super fun tag match. A cheap finish but it works in context. Buck isn't my favorite by a long shot but is a good bit player for the stable. I wish this was a little longer. Steamboat and Arn could wrestle for another 5 minutes by themselves and I would be happy.
Sting, Steamboat, & Rhodes vs Anderson, Funk, & Buck (Main Event Sept 11th) - An escalating of the previous match. It's pretty much the faces beating up the shit heels so it's a bunch of fun! 😋 And from the looks of it, it's the final Steamboat match for the project. He had a helluva 1994!!!
Bless you Terry Funk

REGAL
Lord Steven Regal (w/Sir William) vs. Johnny B. Badd (WCW Fall Brawl 09/18) - Really good, all action match! This was a bit more traditional pro wrestling speed but Regal was calling the match. There were so many little things done right that made it seemed like they were doing more than they were. That's the type of stuff that I like. It doesn't have to be fancy to be good. I'm not opposed to Johnny B. Badd but I don't get his gimmick... haha just thought I'd throw that in there 😄

VADER
Vader is back!
Vader (w/Harley Race) vs. Sting vs. The Guardian Angel (Elimination Match - Fall Brawl 09/18) - The first match is a really fun hoss battle. Bossman/Guardian Angel vs Vader is a nice pairing that I wouldn't have thought of. Check out their Bash at the Beach match too. Sorry if that is a spoiler but you knew that this wss was going to be Sting vs Vader. And the actual finish aside, I thought this was a classic. I prefer their matches when Sting isn't completely overwhelmed but still fighting from underneath. So I really thought this was excellent. Vader was vicious and Sting is a helluva super hero baby face. Again, not my favorite finish BUT it does work in context with the show & overall company booking so I didn't hate it 🙂 But it does keep it from being a classic so, I call it a near classic match and still RECOMMENDED viewing!

WCW is still holding on as long as you avoid Hogan which is rather difficult to do. It's clear to see that they are shifting people out of the picture. Admittedly Hogan is one of biggest stars of pro wrestling and in 1994, got me & many others to pay attention to WCW. Hindsight and personal taste makes it difficult to watch him and his influence take over. But, there's one more installment and it should be good with the Fantastics showing up & more Vader.
Thanks for reading! Take care folks!
