WCW as usual was waffling on whether to pull the trigger on this match, because with Hogan wrestling Sting at Fall Brawl, they didn't want Hogan facing two babyfaces in a row. Yeah, I know, God forbid Hogan get booed, right? This is a good to-the-point promo that gets over big. Under the worst circumstances possible, the reset button has been hit and conditions are actually right to run this match and have it mean something. As usual, though, WCW will fumble the ball when it's handed to them.

[1999-09-04-ECW-TV] Steve Corino promo / Super Crazy vs Yoshihiro Taijiri
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in September 1999
I admit to laughing at Tajiri obliviously nodding along as Corino cuts a promo on him. Corino accuses Tajiri's kind of fulfilling every possible Asian stereotype besides the Japanese ones. This would be an effective swerve, but Joey TELEGRAPHS IT by talking about how Tajiri and Crazy are going to kick Corino's ass. We get a decent match that gets a lot better as it goes along, but is a step behind their previous matches.- 4 replies

Lawler can't appear on Power Pro TV (he was still wrestling live, however, with Stacy doing his promos and angles if necessary). So he settles for the next best thing by showing up in OVW. He's upset that Kenny Bolin is now walking around with a crown on his head.

Is that Dino or Eeyore? I think it's Eeyore. I'm all for more of Kevin Christian: Slimy Executive.

[1999-09-03-ECW-TNN] Dudley Boys vs Tommy Dreamer & Raven
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in September 1999
Two years later but IMO there's no way this works at all without the threat of the Dudleys taking the tag titles to the WWF. Too drawn-out, as I see it, but maybe my attention span is being ruined not just by Crash TV but by the nature of the Yearbooks. But Raven showing up fresh off being in WCW during a time of a slower news cycle was quite the shock, with storyline implications to keep you wanting to watch next week to see where this goes. Is Raven making up with Dreamer or is he doing what Styles implied, which is "forcing" Dreamer to share his first World title with him?- 6 replies

[1999-09-03-ECW-TNN] Dudley Boys vs Spike Dudley & Balls Mahoney
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in September 1999
Impossible to evaluate since the commercial break takes out seemingly a key transition. Say what you will about "...as Raw rolls on!", at least we don't miss shit under the standard WWE house style. Thank God this is the last match in this feud--and once again, the Dudleys don't go through a gimmicked table.- 4 replies

This ring announcer needs a sedative. Okay competitive squash though Tajiri does come off as a bit of an ineffective ninny. The goal at this point was to quickly build Taz as a mountain for RVD to climb before he was off to the WWF, but obviously...you know, plans changed. As someone who's shat on Joey more than anyone else on this board I'll say this was one of his less offensive performances.

Yeah, those are some pretty terrible likenesses. I was done collecting action figures after the LJN and Hasbro sets, but if I'd been of age I would have been all over these for sure (it's not like there weren't bad figures in the first two lines).

[1999-08-30-WWF-Raw] The Rock & Mankind vs The Undertaker & Big Show
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
Rock and Mankind win the tag titles to a monster pop after Show is left to rot by Undertaker--no idea where that was leading to but I have a feeling it won't be relevant as Undertaker isn't much longer for the company until Judgment Day next year. Rock allows Mankind to perform his move in the end, but seems reluctant to share the belts as we go off the air. Show did look better here than he usually has in the WWF and I agree that this has been his best role so far. -
[1999-08-30-WWF-Raw] Chris Jericho and Ken Shamrock / Mankind and The Rock
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
No time for actual wrestling tonight, it seems. At least it sets up a match on Smackdown, but as I recall that one doesn't actually take place either. Backstage, Mankind suggests doing a move that bears a strong resemblance to something Golden Tate did to a football on Sunday. Or possibly one of Rock's moves, I'm not sure. -
[1999-08-30-WWF-Raw] The Rock and Mankind / Meat and Terri Runnels / GTV
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
Rock is moving on quickly from Triple H. He's one of the few people who can get away with openly trash-talking Undertaker, amusingly talking about his "Mickey Mouse tattoos," which gets a long sustained reaction. Mankind, who was also assaulted by UT & Show, is out to respond. A love-hate partnership is born. Crash TV strikes again, as we go from a semi-main event angle to a low man on the totem pole. Weird to see Rock doing this. GTV shows Meat making out with somebody who we have to assume is Marianna based on nothing but the word of the announcers. God knows how we're supposed to care about this feud but the crowd gives a mild pop for the catfight. -
It's not a DQ, the match layout or direction was so incompetent that it pretty much completely missed Hogan pinning Bigelow. Randy Savage--is he still with the promotion??--is in Hogan's locker room, and we get a convenient camera angle from inside to show Sting's puzzled and disappointed reaction.

[1999-08-30-WCW-Nitro] Lex Luger, Hulk Hogan and Sting
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
Well, at least this went farther than Larry Zbyszko and Baby Doll's pictures of Dusty Rhodes, but the reveal is somewhat underwhelming. I guess that's by design, but the Hummer angle has been pushed and then dropped and then pushed again so many times, with Nash having turned and Savage gone in the meantime, that the mystery is pretty dead. DDP rounds out the cast.- 4 replies

[1999-08-30-WCW-Nitro] West Texas Rednecks and Harlem Heat
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
Way to make Harlem Heat look like dumbasses. What a regression for Booker T, who should be in major title contention and is instead having to carry his brother in a feud with a bunch of guys whose best days are long behind them.- 4 replies

I love Berlyn's look and--lighting aside--the presentation, with his entire entourage, and his gimmick of knowing how to speak English but refusing. I also cracked up at Mean Gene getting a patdown (Bobby: "They should have done this years ago!" Tony: "This has never happened to Okerlund...in the ring"). I like the idea of the translator but she doesn't really do as good of a job as Lana of coming off as foreign. It's easy heat, but it's effective on this night. Still, Buff Bagwell is an underwhelming first choice of a feud considering the amount of effort they put into this. I didn't remember the ridiculous lighting but it's as bad on the Network as it is on the Yearbook, so it was some sort of conscious choice.

[1999-08-28-ECW-TV] Dudley Boys vs Spike Dudley & Balls Mahoney
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
Balls and Spike get a final win over the Dudleys, but I agree that it's pretty bullshit that after all this time on their way out the door, the Dudleys can't be bothered to take the flaming table bump themselves. Very Kevin Nash-esque on their part. -
[1999-08-30-AAA] La Parkita & Octagoncito vs Mini Abismo Negro & Mini Psicosis
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in August 1999
It was good and all, and way better than the previous minis match, but I confess to being completely lost as to the Negro-Psicosis split post-match. I was distracted and I must have missed something. -
Recency bias notwithstanding this has been my favorite BattlArts war of 1999...probably. Just an unbelievably brutal fight with stiff strikes and some wrasslin'-style bombs that all make sense and all fight into a shoot context, even the match-clinching DVD at the end by Ikeda.

Rumors flying that Neville walked out before Raw started and asked for his release. Dave doesn't know if the story is true but did confirm that it was supposed to be him vs. Enzo last night and not Kalisto.
-
More like a month later when Stephanie turned. That's when I rationalized it at the time. I didn't think she was actually drugged. And it's sports entertainment, baby.
-
That was my rationalization as well--the drugging was fake and part of the longer-term cover-up.
-
I agree--Corino's heat would be so much greater if he were booked as just a *bit* more potent in the ring. Like 1988 Ric Flair as opposed to the Honky Tonk Man.
