this is a thread about strange, random gimmicks that somehow got over and took on a life of their own.

This man gets it.

I was racking my brains earlier trying to think of any examples in Puro.

Ebessan?

Well done! Excellent example. Didn't he at one point get so over with the Osaka Pro crowd that people were mainly paying to come see him wrestle Kamen?

JBL's closer to a middling artist who makes a sudden change in genre to try to kickstart their career, and is successful as long as they're paired with the right kind of partner - so, maybe, I don't know, Rob Thomas being in a middling pop rock bank like Matchbox 20 that had a couple of big hits (the APA's early success), then was in popularity purgatory before hooking up w/ Santana for Smooth?

Nope. Nelly Furtado.

Thank You! I knew there was a good example. I just completely blanked on it.

Voted for R-Truth, but seeing the subject title without reading the actual content and the first thing that came to mind was that couple of months on RAW in 2002 where Tommy Dreamer was doing a "guy that eats weird things" gimmick. Though from your actual post you were looking for feedback on those sorts of gimmicks that turned out successful.

You could have Maroon 5 too. Bland MOR fodder much beloved of people that think tap water is bursting with flavour, then they bring out dance music tune Moves Like Jagger and get over like rover.
