thebrainfollower
FWIW JDW and I, who don't agree on anything (Not that I am in that league as to wrestling knowledge) agree on all these except 1998. And I never really thought of Road Wild either but I do think he's right no PPV got the attention that Leno brought for this one.
flyonthewall2983
I really wonder if they even gave much thought to building up one PPV as their WrestleMania at all. I'll reiterate my feelings that once it took off, the whole company hinged around Nitro. And that they only hyped the PPV's if they had a Rodman or Leno they could build it around for legit press. One has to remember that it wasn't WCW directly making money off the PPVs, it was Turner. So maybe there was less impetus on putting the kind of emphasis Vince did around WrestleMania. DownNDirtyTN
Whomever said something about Nitro being more important is probably right. I was listening to one of Sullivan's podcasts and he mentioned that the "brass" didn't even want him to book PPV feuds until two weeks before the PPV's for the most part. So he would just throw PPV's together because they weren't as worried about them as they were the Nitro's. Take that for what it's worth but in hindsight it looks like it makes sense. I do remember pretty well that there would be times where no PPV matches were announced at all until a couple of weeks in advance and thought that was rather strange.
