Rebooking NXT Season 1

Jimmy Redman

Recommended Posts

Between NXT and the Nexus, 2010 drove me a little fantasy-booking insane. I've had this rattling around in my head since...2010, so now that there's a place for it I may as well try to flesh it out into a coherent whole and see what it looks like outside my head.

The challenge I gave myself was to re-do NXT, under much of the same conditions as it was at the time, and try to make it an effective pro wrestling program to introduce new talent with, instead of the self-burying joke of a show it turned out to be. As you can already tell, this was and is me fantasy booking in a very reactive way, so I will probably be dropping a lot of "I'm not doing X like they did in real life because its stupid for reasons Y and Z", which I will try to keep to a minimum.

Aspects of the real NXT I retain:

- Runs for an hour every Tuesday night on SyFy (I forget when it was replaced by SD, but if that fell during my timeline I'm ignoring it)

- Same basic idea of pairing a Rookie with a Pro, with the same pairings as the real one

- A Pros Poll where the Pros evaluate the Rookies as talents which determines (partly) their future

- Win-Loss records are kept on the Rookies which determine (partly) their future

- Bryan & Miz conflict as the major storyline, including a Bryan "losing streak" (the other half of the challenge to myself was trying to find a way to make the losing streak gimmick actually work, so bear with me)

- "Wild and Young" :)

Broad changes I am making:

- The season is run as a wrestling tournament with matches used to eliminate Rookies, not voting. Eliminations happen until there is a final four, at which point we go into semi finals and a final.

- Pros Poll votes and Win-Loss Records combine to create a measurable ranking of Rookies periodically (to determine who fights in elimination matches, i.e. the bottom two)

- Elimination matches are singles matches. All other NXT matches are Rookies teaming with their Pros in tag team matches.

- Promos/backstage skits are not done in the usual overproduced/scripted WWE style, but borrow more heavily from TUF-style cut-away interviews and even TNA-style "realistic" backstage interaction. Just create something that feels more organic and has more of the dreaded "pure sports build" feel. I want to set it apart aesthetically from other WWE programming.

- Keep it in kayfabe. Even at it's good points the real NXT had way too much "this guy is a good wrestler because hes entertaining on the mic, because the goal of a wrestler is not to win matches, but to entertain the WWE Universe" type nonsense. No fourth wall breaking, treat everything as in kayfabe. And it goes without saying, no Cole heel turn and no mocking, self-destructive announcing.

- Keep ECW running for another month, so Season 1 can begin two nights after Wrestlemania and run until the Tuesday before Summerslam.

________________________________________________

Before the show starts airing I'd do much the same as they did in real life, just talk about a brand new concept and drop the names of the Pros that will be on the show. My thing is that by debuting after Mania, you can put a 30-second ad for it on the Mania show, and especially promote it heavily on the post-Mania Raw with tonnes of people watching, just to get as many eyeballs on it as possible.

NXT Season 1, Week 1

30th March 2010 from Las Vegas, NV

"Some people say...that I am the best wrestler in the world."

Fancy pants WWE Production video opens the show, beginning with those words from Bryan. We see footage of the Rookies wrestling, the Pros wrestling, and the stock posing footage as well, while the Rookies in voiceover talk about who they are, where they're from, how long they've been trying to get here, how determined they are to win, total soundbites all layered over one another, before ending again with Bryan's words,

"Some people say that I am the best wrestler in the world. And I've come to NXT to prove it."

"Wild and Young", opening video, fireworks, etc.

Vince McMahon* is in the yellow-roped NXT ring to explain the concept of the new show. Eight Rookies pair up with eight Pros, they will compete together to try to win matches and the Rookies will try to impress the WWE Universe and the WWE Superstars that make up the Pros. After a certain period of time, the Pros will evaluate the Rookies and rank them in a Pros Poll. This rank plus the Rookies' win-loss record during the competition will determine the Rookie Rankings. After each Ranking, the bottom two Rookies will fight for their right to stay in the competition, and the loser will be eliminated. The final four Rookies will go into sudden-death semi-finals, and the winner of the grand final will be crowned the winner of the inaugural season of NXT.

What is in it for them? The winning Rookie earns a WWE contract, a spot on the Raw roster, and a guaranteed shot at any title of their choosing. The Pros also have an incentive to help their guy to victory, as the Pro of the winning Rookie will walk away with a cool $100,000. Vince goes on to say that you will be introduced to the Rookies and their Pros tonight, and you will get your first taste of NXT in-ring action as well.

* Assuming things in non-NXT WWE stay the same, it might be too soon after Mania and Bret Hart for Vince to go back to the non-cartoony, neutral, Chairman of the Board Vince McMahon he would need to be to do this segment. If he doesn't feel right here, just replace him with Stephanie or something.

From there, each Rookie is introduced by their Pro in short promos shot in various locations around the arena. Jericho and Barrett are happy together and smug assholes. Christian is happy, Slater is excited and One Man Banding. Carlito is cocky and Tarver is an insane terrorist. Matt Hardy and Gabriel are happy together and babyface-like. Regal is trying to be serious while Skip is all "Yip yip yip" beside him. Truth is happy Truth but Otunga is aloof and pompous. Punk is slightly bored and quite bewildered by D. Young and his hair. Miz announces that he wants to do his introduction in the ring.

Back from the break, Miz is in the ring and brings out Bryan, whom he is unimpressed with. Instead of the real life segment where Miz is a Vince socko and says Bryan isn't entertaining enough to be a WWE Superstar, play it more like Miz is personally upset that he got stuck with who he sees as a boring, vanilla midget, technical wrestler kind of dude. Miz wanted someone who he could party on the A List with, and so forth. So Miz challenges Bryan to impress him on the spot, entertain him, come up with a catchphrase, and Bryan responds with "Tap or Snap", which he gets the crowd to chant. Bryan tells Miz that he has to work with him whether he likes it or not, and he better get on board because they are about to have their first match. There is simmering tension there, but nothing too major.

The Miz & Daniel Bryan vs CM Punk & Darren Young w/ Luke Gallows and Serena

Bryan and Miz do the Angle/Benoit tag team thing where they try to one-up each other and show off in the ring. Bryan shows off his wrestling skill, Miz ends up showing ass and getting flustered at being shown up by Bryan. D. Young is a goofy but fiery babyface. Punk tags in periodically but only starts showing interest when Young looks good on offense. Finish comes when Bryan gets on a roll until the SES interferes and Bryan is blindsided by a Gallows boot and GTS'd. The Miz is disappointed with Bryan for losing even though he did the heavy lifting and was cheated out of a win.

> Punk pins Bryan

Darren Young 1-0 : Daniel Bryan 0-1

Next week on NXT you will see Matt Hardy and the World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho in action, more Rookies make their NXT debuts, and much, much more.

Thanks for showing interest. The real NXT killed my life too, hence...this.

NXT Season 1, Week 2

6th April 2010 from Chicago, IL

"Wild and Young", opening video, fireworks, etc.

Justin Gabriel & Matt Hardy vs David Otunga & R-Truth

Otunga shows off his ridiculous body by posing during their entrance. Gabes and Matt soon find a nice rhythm with basic babyface double teams, and even one or two of Matt's greatest hits. Otunga doesn't seem interested in co operating with Truth in the same way. Truth and Matt go at it in a competitive babyface way. Otunga eventually takes over on Gabes using power moves and his size advantage. Hot tag, babyfaces run wild, Truth is tossed, Matt Side Effect on Otunga, then he tags Gabes who goes to the top, takes a breath and hits the 450 Splash to the shock and awe of the crowd.

> Gabriel pins Otunga

Justin Gabriel 1-0 : David Otunga 0-1

A quick replay of last week's main event finish leads into a series of cut away interviews about the Bryan & Miz team. Miz is asked if he was impressed by Daniel Bryan and he scoffs and denies it, while others (Regal, Matt, whoever) talk about how good Bryan looked in the ring, and note somewhat bemusedly that he out-worked The Miz. Bryan talks about being excited to have his first match in WWE after taking so many years to get to this point, but he's disappointed in the loss and the cheating tactics the SES used. Miz blames Bryan for the loss and says it proves that he's not on the level of the Miz. Bryan is asked about Miz and says that while he's a bit goofy and egotistical, he has no problem with the guy personally and hopes they can work together during the competition because he is determined to win. Other talking heads chime in voicing their doubts that two guys with such opposite personalities can co exist as a team, comparing Bryan as a humble, no-nonsense wrestler's wrestler to The Miz being an arrogant, trash talking, reality show douche. Miz says he hopes Bryan improves for their next match, fearing that he is stuck with a Rookie who is completely useless, as well as boring.

Backstage in a hallway, R-Truth finds David Otunga, already dressed, and begins to congratulate him on his effort and offer some advice, but Otunga is on the phone. The phrases "Access Hollywood" and "how much?" are heard from his end of the call. Hanging up, he tells Truth he doesn't have time to talk because he's heading to a party with his friends from his law firm here in Chicago. "Well hey, I like to party!" Truth exclaims hopefully. Otunga looks Truth up and down and dismissively says "You're not on the list" before exiting in a very swish car.

In another part of the arena, Michael Tarver is doing some boxing to warm up. Carlito is holding the pads for him and talking him up, telling him he's going to dominate NXT, knock everybody out, etc. Tarver gets progressively more intense and ends up finally hitting the crap out of the pad, Carlito winces in pain and quickly tells him that he's ready. They begin to move towards Gorilla before a crew member stops them. "What do you mean what are we doing? We're going out to the ring!" The guy regretfully tells them that they're scheduled for next week, not tonight, as it would have said in their booking information. Carlito pleads ignorance but looks guilty behind Tarver's back, while Tarver is furious. He screams "You telling me I can't fight tonight?! That's what you're saying to me?!" at the poor crew guy before flooring him with a right hand. Carlito manages to back Tarver away, and mutters "That's not cool" at the unconscious dude before following after him.

A Heath Slater profile video airs (like the ones they did on the real NXT), to segue into him being the one to actually make his NXT debut right after the break.

Heath Slater & Christian vs Wade Barrett & Chris Jericho

Slater comes out One Man Banding all over the place to Christian's amusement. Barrett comes out in his coat with the rose on it, Jericho still as the World Heavyweight Champion (in my alternate WWE universe), all business. Both the babyface and heel teams quickly gel and work well together in the ring, leading to a good, long tag team match. Both Slater and Christian take turns being in peril. In the end, Slater is battling Jericho and holding his own when Barrett makes a blind tag and an oblivious Slater turns right into Wasteland.

> Barrett pins Slater

Wade Barrett 1-0 : Heath Slater 0-1

Next week NXT heads to Merry Olde England and the last remaining Rookies make their long-awaited debuts.

NXT Season 1, Week 3

13th April 2010 from London, England

"Wild and Young", opening video, fireworks, etc.

We begin backstage with the semi-invisible cameraman (Hervey in TNA style) knocking on a door. William Regal comes out in his fanciest robe. He talks about being happy to be back in England where the fans appreciate a true wrestling master like himself. Tonight it is his honour to present the next generation of WWE Superstar, who will win NXT under his expert tutelage, learning only the most refined techniques in the art of wrestling...but at this point Regal trails off as Skip Sheffield comes within earshot and drowns him out speaking in Skip Sheffield-ese. "Hey there Mr. Regal! I hope you went home and kissed your momma today! I swear I nearly caused so many God-dang pile ups coming here, you people drive on the wrong side of the dang road! Anyway, its time for my big debut! I'm ready to put the pedal to the metal and roll right through everybody! Hey - after I win maybe the Queen can wave that sword and make me a prince, or whatever it is you people do here in Ireland! (Regal flinches) Come on Mr. Regal, lets kick some butt! Yep yep yep, what it do!" Regal is horrified and shakes his head sadly as they head off to the ring.

Skip Sheffield & William Regal vs Michael Tarver & Carlito

Regal comes out to a big pop, and basically works babyface during this match. Regal bemusedly allows a giddy Skip to start, while Carlito convinces a pumped up Tarver to stand on the apron to begin with, but as the match begins and Skip bumps him around for fun with his power, Carlito reconsiders and tags Tarver in for the lulz. They soon build to Regal tagging into the match, and he gets some shine bamboozling the heels with his Regal-ness. The heels soon take over with Tarver targeting Regal’s ribs with punches, and Carlito hits the Backcracker for a nearfall. Regal finally tags out, Skip runs wild with big man stuff, the heels bump into each other like goofs, and Skip Lariats Tarver to death.

> Skip pins Tarver

Skip Sheffield 1-0 : Michael Tarver 0-1

Backstage, we see Darren Young entering the building trying to carry what looks like 13 bags at once. Luke Gallows and Serena yell at him to hurry up. D. Young hurriedly says he doesn't have time for an interview, he has to get the bags in and then get Punk his pre-match meal. He is asked why he's doing all this, and replies that Gallows told him that is what a Rookie does.

As Young stumbles off, Wade Barrett saunters into view. "Am I disappointed to not have a match tonight in England? Of course not!" He talks about fighting his way all over England and Europe for years just so that he could finally make it to the US where the big money is. Coming back to wrestle in England again would be a step backward, and Wade Barrett is moving onward and upward, ready to dominate NXT with Chris Jericho. "I hope I never have to wrestle in England ever again. Hey, there he is! The World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho!" as Jericho joins him for the interview. "Was I impressed by Wade Barrett last week? Did you actually watch the match? Of course I was impressed, Wade Barrett is very impressive." Jericho puts Barrett over, and says that with the World Champion, the Best in the World at What I Do by his side, he's going straight to the top.

Cut away to an interview where Christian is asked the same question - was he impressed by Wade Barrett? He was, but also says that he thought Heath Slater was impressive as well, going toe to toe with the World Champion and holding his own. He feels that despite the loss, they worked well together and it is something to build upon and they will hopefully start picking up wins. In a separate interview Slater echoes Christian's sentiments, disappointed that he lost his first match, but was happy to be out there and "the fans went CRAZY for the One Man Band Bay-bay!"

A video is shown of David Otunga on Access Hollywood being interviewed by Maria Menounos. (US-only link to the real video HERE )

In the SES locker room, Punk is giving instructions to D. Young, and still looks a little disinterested. "I didn't ask to be put on this show Darren. I prefer to only be around people who deserve to be in my presence, so what I ask of you is that you do not embarrass me. As long as you go out there and win, we do not have a problem, got it?" Punk leaves first but Gallows blocks D. Young from following. "I don't like you. You're not one of us (as he points to his bald head) so don't get too comfortable hanging around." D. Young is unfazed and nonchalantly says he always wondered why they all have to shave their heads while Punk gets to keep all the hair on his body.

A Justin Gabriel video package airs. He and Darren Young are both after their second win next.

Justin Gabriel & Matt Hardy vs Darren Young & CM Punk

When the SES enters Gallows walks as far away from Young as possible, and Punk subtly puts himself between D. Young and Serena. Matt and Gabes continue to work really well together as a tag team and get some shine. Gallows and Serena don't care when Young is in the ring, but do interfere to give Punk the upper hand. Turns into a good, long match between two evenly-matched teams. In the end the SES cause a slight distraction to Matt at the crucial moment for Punk to hit the GTS.

> Punk pins Matt

Darren Young 2-0 : Justin Gabriel 1-1

Next week on NXT three Rookies, including Daniel Bryan, aim to secure their first win on NXT, plus much more.

NXT Season 1, Week 4

20th April 2010 from Uncasville, CT

"Wild and Young", opening video, fireworks, etc.

The semi-invisible cameraman is with Daniel Bryan, who is looking bemused. He explains that the Raw crew is still stuck in Belfast as a result of the volcanic eruption in Iceland, so with The Miz absent, his second NXT match has been postponed until next week. He says it is frustrating, but he can't do much about a volcano and appears to see the humour in it. He is asked if The Miz had got in contact with him, and Bryan says they're not really a team to hang out and be best buddies and talk all the time. Bryan is told that they're trying to get a satellite interview with Miz tonight from Belfast, and he asks the guy to let him know if they do.

Tarver and Carlito walk right past Bryan and again head towards gorilla looking ready to fight, only to be stopped by the same crew guy as last time. From a distance we see him try to explain the situation, and he points to Bryan still standing nearby, dressed in street clothes, and Bryan gives them a wave. Carlito cottons on and starts remonstrating, while Tarver freaks out and the crew guy flinches in anticipation. Carlito holds Tarver back, they begin to walk away and the crew guy relaxes, only for Tarver to swing around and deck him anyway. Bryan cackles in the background.

Back from the break, The Miz comes to us via satellite. He sarcastically apologises for not being there, and says he has a million other things to worry about other than Daniel Bryan and this stupid show. He is the United States Champion, and one-half of the Unified Tag Team Champions, "and for some ridiculous reason, the Big Show and I, not only do we have to defend our tag team titles against the Hart Dynasty this Sunday at Extreme Rules, but it is going to be a Submission Match." He complains about this for a minute, and then says that while they are stuck in Europe, he and the Big Show are training in submissions, so by this Sunday he will be a submissions expert and he will prove everybody wrong, including Bret 'The Hitman' Hart, by making his precious Hart family members tap out.

As The Miz finishes ranting we pan out to see Bryan watching the interview on a monitor. He is asked for his thoughts and chuckles. "Let me tell you something. If The Miz thinks he can become a 'submissions expert' in a few days holed up in a hotel room, he's got another thing coming. It takes years, years of training, years of getting your ass handed to you night in, night out in a gym, a basement, a dungeon, before you become a submission wrestler." Bryan says he has wrestled both Tyson Kidd and DH Smith in the past, and they are the real deal. "The Hart Dynasty will tie The Miz in knots, I guarantee it. The Miz is no 'submissions expert'."

A Skip Sheffield promo video airs.

CM Punk is interviewed somewhere else backstage about Darren Young now that they are 2-0. Punk says that he doesn't care about Darren Young, his future or this show, but he's fine with doing NXT as long as Darren Young doesn't embarrass him. The more shows he (Punk) appears on, the more people will be exposed to the healing power of Straight Edge. On that note, Punk is asked about how he is handling working with the 'South Beach Party Boy', at which Punk is bewildered. "What do you mean 'South Beach Party Boy'?" and it is explained to Punk that Young has gone by that nickname in the past. Punk abruptly leaves the interview and starts walking the halls looking for D. Young, and the camera follows.

Back from the break, Punk has located Young with the SES. Punk calmly questions Darren on his nickname. "What does it mean? Well bro I'm from South Beach, you know, and, well-" "And you like to party. Right? You go out to the clubs, get drunk, maybe smoke a little something, take a little something, sleep with anything in a skirt, huh? Am I RIGHT Darren?!" Darren sees where this is headed and Gallows gleefully chimes in, "I TOLD you there was something wrong with this guy!" Punk shushes him and stares a hole through D. Young. "What you're saying is, you're not Straight Edge." Young guiltily nods and braces for the fallout as Punk keeps repeating himself, "You're not Straight Edge. You...aren't...Straight Edge." But for some reason Punk is looking more and more excited, not angry, and he finally grasps Young and exclaims "You're not Straight Edge!" with wild happiness. "This is it! This is what I have been searching for, a reason why I'm here. This is my purpose now, YOU are my purpose Darren. It is so clear to me now, my path has been laid before me, and yours too Darren. I have been sent to NXT...to save you, through the power of Straight Edge. Darren Young, I am going to save you." Gallows looks furious.

In the locker room, Truth is pacing around as Otunga walks in with earphones in. "Where you been dog?" Otunga asks Truth if he saw his Access Hollywood piece last week. Truth tries to talk about their match tonight, but Otunga blows him off again. "Look at this body Truth. (flexes) I mean, I'm wearing Versace trunks right here. I got this."

A Wade Barrett promo video airs to lead into the main event.

Wade Barrett & Chris Jericho vs David Otunga & R-Truth

Before the match Jericho cuts a short promo hyping his cage match with Edge for the World Title at Extreme Rules. Truth and Otunga still appear to be on two separate pages, even arguing about who starts the match. They eventually settle down into a back-and-forth match. Otunga uses some power moves. Barrett muscles Truth around and throws hands. Jericho and Truth trade moves. Jericho and Barrett work as a team better and pick up the win with a Codebreaker on Truth.

> Jericho pins Truth

Wade Barrett 2-0 : David Otunga 0-2

Next week on NXT, Daniel Bryan's much-anticipated second match, and much more.

  • 2 weeks later...

When current wrestling gets exciting again I lose interest in writing to fix it. But I should get back to this.

Alternate WWE Universe happenings before this week's show;

Relevant Extreme Rules PPV results from 25th April:

- Hart Dynasty defeat ShoMiz for the Tag Team Titles when Miz submits to the Sharpshooter.

- CM Punk defeats Rey Mysterio when Joey Mercury debuts as the mysterious hooded third man.

- Edge defeats Chris Jericho in the cage for the World Title (in my alternate universe, I scrapped the WM 26 MITB match in anticipation of the July MITB PPV, which means no Swagger cash in).

The WWE Draft is held on 26th April with a special three-hour edition of Raw. Relevant results:

- ShoMiz lose a tag team title rematch, Show gets traded to Smackdown, KO punches Miz to end their tag team.

- Chris Jericho gets traded to Raw

- R-Truth gets traded to Raw

- Christian gets traded to Smackdown

So in terms of the NXT Pros, we end up with Miz, Jericho, Truth, Regal & Carlito on Raw, and Punk, Matt and Christian on Smackdown.

And so we resume...

NXT Season 1, Week 5

27th April 2010 from Hershey, PA

"Wild and Young", opening video, fireworks, etc.

Heath Slater & Christian vs Skip Sheffield & William Regal

Christian and Regal pick up where their ECW rivalry left off and do some more work together. Christian and Slater continue to work well as a team, while Regal and Skip are prone to comedic miscommunications. Finish comes when, of course, Christian hits Regal with the Killswitch.

> Christian pins Regal

Heath Slater 1-1 : Skip Sheffield 1-1

Backstage the camera meets Miz as he enters the building, sporting a huge shiner on his eye. He is asked about his woes of the last 48 hours, but before he can go off on one Bryan walks up trying not to smirk, and failing miserably. Bryan jokes about his black eye. Miz gets angry and asks Bryan where he gets off saying things like "The Hart Dynasty will tie The Miz in knots." (in Miz's annoying high-pitched mimicking voice) Bryan points out that he was right, and Miz says he'd like to have seen Bryan not tap to the Sharpshooter. Bryan tells him he knows at least five counters to the Sharpshooter, and would have been happy to help train him for the submission match if he'd have reached out. Miz flips out at the idea that his Rookie wants to train HIM, cuts a promo on him and ends up storming off. Bryan looks pretty bemused about the whole thing.

We see Regal and Skip walking along the hallway. Regal is still a tad groggy from the Killswitch but has enough energy to chastise Skip about whatever boneheaded mistakes he made during the match, to which Skip is apologetic - all "I'm sorry Mr. Regal" - and consoles him by accidentally patting him VERY hard on the back, making Regal wince in pain.

In the SES locker room, Punk is questioning a rather subdued Darren Young on the past week. "Did you have a drink yesterday?" and so on, to which Young replies in the negative. Punk looks happy and interested in Young and NXT for the first time, talking up his future as the winner of NXT and a Straight Edge ambassador, while Gallows and Serena are sullen and jealous at the attention Punk is giving Young.

We see a series of cut away interviews on the character and ability of David Otunga. Jericho and Matt talk about facing him in the ring - "he has raw power, just needs to put the pieces together" type stuff. Random people talk about how much of a dick he is, acting above everyone else and not even shaking hands or introducing himself to WWE Superstars like he should. Miz on the other hand raves about his A List cred and superstar potential. R-Truth tries to defend him and says that he just needs to learn how to conduct himself properly, but admits that so far Otunga hasn't really been listening to him.

This leads to the David Otunga promo video featuring "Google me."

Backstage the camera catches sight of Jericho and he is asked about how he feels losing the World Title to Edge and being traded to Raw. Jericho pouts and ignores the question. Wade Barrett comes to save him and tells them to talk about him instead, and cuts a promo about being dominant on NXT.

A Michael Tarver promo video airs to lead into the main event.

Daniel Bryan & The Miz vs Michael Tarver & Carlito

Bryan brushes past Miz to do his ramp skip thing. These guys continue to just not get along during the match, arguing about who starts, tagging in and out aggressively, and so on. Bryan once again seems to look a lot better than Miz wrestling-wise. Tarver is intense but also kind of shitty, Carlito is late-era Carlito. In the end another argument between Bryan and Miz leads to Carlito rolling Bryan up and putting his feet on the ropes to steal it. Post-match both men blame the other and continue to argue.

> Carlito pins Bryan

Daniel Bryan 0-2 : Michael Tarver 1-1

Next week on NXT, the next stage of the competition is revealed as the Rookies keep searching for precious wins.

  • 3 months later...

So after a couple of months of...whatever that was with WWE booking, I am back on the horse ready to fix the joint.

NXT Season 1, Week 6

4th May 2010 from Charlestown, SC

"Wild and Young", opening video, fireworks, etc.

Scott Stanford and Josh Mathews are ringside at the announce desk with an important announcement. Two weeks from tonight will be the night of the very first Rookie Ranking. Each Pro will rank the Rookies, excluding their own, from 1-7 based on their performances and potential. This Pros Poll will combine with the Rookies' win-loss records to create the Rookie Ranking, from which the bottom two will be placed into an elimination match where they will fight to remain in the competition. This means that all the Rookies only have one more chance to score another W and impress the other Pros before they are evaluated, making this next round of matches the most crucial yet.

Backstage, Carlito and Michael Tarver watch this announcement with excitement. They are ecstatic about getting their first win last week, and as they start walking they jabber about getting another victory and riding a wave of momentum into the first Ranking. They reach gorilla and come face to face with the same poor crew guy Tarver has been tormenting. This time he steps aside nervously and lets them go to the ring for their scheduled match. Carlito reacts like it's a sign of things looking up for them after getting a win. Tarver still threatens the crew guy with his fist, and cackles when he flinches, but this time leaves him unscathed as they go through the curtain.

Michael Tarver & Carlito vs Justin Gabriel & Matt Hardy

Carlito and Tarver are cocky as shit and act a lot better than they are. Gabes and Matt are smooth and work babyface tag team spots. It doesn't take long before they dispatch the heels and finish with the big 450 splash.

> Gabriel pins Tarver

Justin Gabriel 2-1 : Michael Tarver 1-2

Backstage, CM Punk is with his group and looking pissed. (Alternate WWE Universe happenings: Last week on Smackdown, Rey Mysterio challenged CM Punk to a final blow off match, putting up anything Punk wants in return for Punk putting up his hair. While making the challenge Rey mentions that he got the inspiration for the stip from Darren Young asking Gallows why the SESers have to be bald when Punk doesn't all those weeks ago. The match is made with Punk demanding Rey put his mask up in return.) Punk is upset that Rey goaded him into putting up his hair, and that it was Darren that put the idea into his head. But Punk forgives him for his misguided comment as it was made before Punk saved him, and the SES are again frustrated that D Young dodges another bullet. Punk vows to show Rey Mysterio and the world the power of Straight Edge, and the power of cleansing one's sins by symbolically cutting one's hair off by giving Darren Young a proper induction into the SES by shaving his head in the middle of the ring, tonight, which catches D Young completely off guard.

We see a series of interviews on the subject of Justin Gabriel and his team with Matt Hardy. They both praise the other and talk about how easy it is to work together. Matt Hardy compares Gabes to a young Matt Hardy, having the same daredevil style and desire to fly around and excite the fans. Talking heads like Christian note their chemistry as a tag team and predict that it will lead to lots of victories, which will give Gabes a great chance to go deep into the competition.

Backstage, the camera picks up Carlito and Tarver looking pissed off, and once within earshot hears them bickering about losing again so quickly. Truth spies the camera and asks the cameraman if he has seen Otunga tonight. Truth can't find him, and they have a match tonight to go over. In the background we can see Miz and Jericho in conversation. (Alternate WWE Universe happenings: Since being traded to Raw, Miz has recruited Jericho to be his new tag team partner in his feud with the Hart Dynasty and Bret Hart.

A Darren Young promo video airs. After it ends we are reminded that his head shaving is coming up after the break.

Punk's music hits in the arena and he, the SES and Young all come to the ring. They go through the SES head-shaving ritual, asking Darren if he's ready to blah blah and sitting him in the chair, then Punk raves about Straight Edge and purity and blah blah, while D Young looks more and more nervous. They build to the moment where the clippers are whipped out, and milk it forever. Just before his hair is touched Darren leaps up and tries to stall, clearly reluctant to go through with it. Punk becomes more and more frustrated, and then angry when he realises Darren is backing out, but just as he begins to threaten Young, Truth's music hits and he runs down to make the save and get in Punk's face. We segue into their scheduled match even though Otunga is nowhere to be found.

R-Truth & David Otunga vs Darren Young & CM Punk

Punk is livid with Truth and they go at it from the bell. With no partner to help him, Truth falls victim to SES gang tactics. Minutes into the match Otunga saunters down without a care in the world to take his place on the apron. Truth eventually makes it to tag out, and Punk does the same soon after, his rage having passed. Otunga and Truth go at it with Young while Punk is back to looking completely uninterested on the apron. He doesnt even reach out a hand to tag when Young gets within reach, and while Darren puts up a fight, eventually he succumbs to whatever Otunga's finish is.

> Otunga pins Young

David Otunga 1-2 : Darren Young 2-1

Next week on NXT, the remaining four pairs, including Bryan & Miz, have their last opportunity to grab a win before the first Rookie Ranking.

Cheers man, I appreciate that. I just lost the motivation to write for a while there.

NXT Season 1, Week 7

11th May 2010 from Buffalo, NY

"Wild and Young", opening video, fireworks, etc.

Wade Barrett & Chris Jericho vs Skip Sheffield & William Regal

The English angle between Barrett and Regal is played up. Jericho cockily underestimates Skip and pays by eating power moves all over the place. Regal works as a kind of subtle face using maestro Regal holds and shit, before Barrett and Jericho briefly take over on him to set up Skip cleaning house with more power spots. After more back and forth, Regal is left with Barrett, and after a failed Skip save attempt, Barrett hits Wasteland on Regal. Everyone flips because this is the first time a Rookie has pinned a Pro.

> Barrett pins Regal

Wade Barrett 3-0 : Skip Sheffield 1-2

Backstage, Barrett and Jericho crow about their victory, especially the fact that Barrett pinned a WWE Superstar. Barrett talks about replacing Regal as the great English hope of the WWE. Jericho says Barrett is dominating and should be a shoo-in to be #1 in the Poll next week.

Elsewhere, Punk is asked about his reaction to the head-shaving fiasco last week. Is he unhappy with Darren Young? "Who?" Punk asks. He ignores the questions until Miz comes up clearly wanting to talk, and then stares pointedly at the cameraman. "Do you mind? Go bother someone else," as he walks off with Punk.

Various Rookies and their Pros are interviewed about the looming Rookie Ranking and where they think they'll rank in the Poll. Skip Sheffield jabbers in an overly optimistic way about coming 1st as Regal gently tries to remind him that he just lost. "And whose fault is that Mr. Regal?" Skip innocently asks and immediately regrets. Tarver cuts a promo about how everyone should recognise that he is the most dangerous man in NXT. Slater and Christian are happy with their performances so far, and are confident of a high placing should they win tonight, going 2-1 and making a good last impression. Otunga spouts off cockily about his chances, bragging about winning last week, before he is interrupted by R-Truth. Truth asks him why he was so late getting to the ring last week, and as Otunga starts to blow him off Truth flips out and cuts a promo on him, just putting him on blast for acting like such an arrogant douche having accomplished NOTHING yet in this business. Truth tells him if he wants to make it to WWE he needs to get his head out of his ass, treat him with some respect and start listening and learning, or else he'll end up as some D List nobody who couldn't hack it. "...and that's the truth!" Truth walks away and Otunga is stunned.

A Daniel Bryan promo video airs.

Backstage, Carlito is chatting away to Miz, then sees Bryan coming and excuses himself. Before Bryan can even get a word out Miz is cutting him off. "Really? Really?! No, don't even try it. I don't have time to worry about you. Next week, live on Monday Night Raw, I am going to end the career of that has-been Bret 'The Hitman' Hart once and for all. Then at Over the Limit, Chris Jericho and I will become the new Tag Team Champions. I have more important things to worry about than you and your stupid competition. Oh, this is your last chance to get a victory? Well boo hoo! You know what? It doesn't even matter anymore. This is all almost over. Next week you will be in the bottom two, you will be eliminated, and I never have to deal with you or this stupid show ever again. So let's just get this over with, shall we?" And he heads off to the ring.

Daniel Bryan & The Miz vs Heath Slater & Christian

Bryan and Miz, of course, don't get along in any way, bicker and refuse to tag in and out co operatively. Slater and Christian work well together and are clearly out to impress. Late in the match, Miz is battling Slater and both men are weary. Slater hits a desperation dropkick that sends Miz towards the ropes. Bryan tags himself back in, leading Miz to flip out, claiming he had everything under control. Bryan goes in and delivers some seated kicks to the chest of Slater while Miz retrieves his title belt from ringside, before jumping up on the apron and yelling at Bryan some more - "I am the United States Champion! I don't take orders from you! I am your Pro!" Bryan tries to turn back to the match but BAM, Miz nails him in the head with the belt. A shocked Slater makes the cover as a smirking Miz drops down and saunters off.

> Slater pins Bryan

Heath Slater 2-1 : Daniel Bryan 0-3

Post-match, Bryan eventually comes to and sees Miz walking back up the ramp taunting him, waving goodbye and making "oh and three" hand gestures.

Next week on NXT, the very first Rookie Ranking! Find out where the rookies rank in the Pros Poll and who ends up in the bottom two, and see which rookie is the first to be eliminated from the competition.

NXT Season 1, Week 8

18th May 2010 from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

"Wild and Young", opening video, fireworks, etc.

The eight Rookies are all lined up in the ring in their street clothes. Their Pros are all sitting in chairs up on the stage. Scott Stanford is in the ring acting as MC.

"Hello and welcome everybody to the very first Rookie Ranking of the inaugural season of NXT. Right now we will decide the fate of these Rookies: who is safe in the competition, and who is up for elimination.

Before the show went on the air tonight all the WWE Pros ranked the Rookies - except for their own - based on their performance so far in the competition and their potential as WWE Superstars. These polls have been combined to give us the order of the overall Pros Poll. 1st place in the Pros Poll will receive 8 points, 2nd place 7 points, and so on, with 8th place receiving 1 point."

Stanford has to pause here as the Canadian crowd is aiming a particularly loud chant of "YOU TAPPED OUT" at The Miz, who submitted the previous night on Raw to Bret Hart's Sharpshooter. (Alternate WWE Universe alteration: Miz's US Title wasn't on the line in the match, he still has it.) Miz is not happy about this. Eventually they die down and Stanford continues.

"In addition to the points received from the Pros Poll, Rookies will also receive a point for every win they have earned in the competition thus far. This combined score will determine the final standings of the Rookie Ranking.

Unfortunately, the two Rookies who end up in the bottom two will be in danger of elimination from NXT. Tonight in our main event, these two men will face off in singles competition. No tag team partner, no WWE Pro to help them, in fact the Pros will not even be allowed at ringside. The winner of this match will remain in the competition, and the loser will be eliminated from NXT and no longer have the chance to be the WWE's next breakout star.

So without further ado, here are the results of the Pros Poll."

Graphics pop up on the titantron revealing the information as Stanford reads it out.

"In eighth place, receiving 1 point from the Pros Poll...Michael Tarver.

In seventh place, receiving 2 points from the Pros Poll...Darren Young.

In sixth place, receiving 3 points......Daniel Bryan.

In fifth place, receiving 4 points from the Pros...Skip Sheffield.

Now we enter the top half of the board...in fourth place, receiving 5 points from the Pros Poll...David Otunga.

In third place, and receiving 6 points from the Pros Poll...Heath Slater.

Now this is it gentlemen, in second place, receiving 7 points...is Justin Gabriel, which means in first place, receiving the all-important 8 Pros Poll points, Wade Barrett."

Barrett is jubilant, as is Jericho on the ramp. Stanford congratulates him and asks for his thoughts, and Barrett cuts a short promo about being the "bloody obvious choice" and vows to continue to dominate NXT.

Stanford moves on to the win-loss part of the ranking. On the titantron we see the Rookies' wins being added onto their points:

Barrett 8 + 3 = 11

Gabriel 7 + 2 = 9

Slater 6 + 2 = 8

Otunga 5 + 1 = 6

Sheffield 4 + 1 = 5

Bryan 3 + 0 = 3

Young 2 + 2 = 4

- graphic leaps Young ahead of Bryan in the list -

Tarver 1 + 1 = 2

"And there you have it folks, the final order of the first Rookie Ranking. Wade Barrett, Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater, David Otunga, Skip Sheffield and Darren Young, congratulations, you are all safe in the competition. Unfortunately for you two fellas, Daniel Bryan in 7th place, and Michael Tarver in 8th, you are now in danger of being eliminated."

Stanford interviews Tarver first who cuts an angry promo about everyone trying to get rid of him because they're scared of him. Bryan says he had hoped that the Pros would overlook his record and judge him on his individual performances in the ring, but he can't really complain that he's here considering he is yet to win a match. Stanford repeats that they will fight tonight in an elimination match, and gets them to shake hands and face off.

Back from commercials, we are backstage for the fallout from the Ranking. First Matt Hardy is interviewed and says he's happy with Gabriel's placement. "Of course the goal is #1, and Justin had a good shot at it, but I guess uh, Wade Barrett being undefeated, and pinning William Regal last week, it was hard to go past him." Matt is asked if he voted Barrett in first place and replies in the affirmative.

He also mentions his surprise at how low Bryan finished in the Poll, considering Matt himself had him third, saying he has obvious ability and is handicapped by having The Miz as a partner. At this point Christian walks past and is asked to join the conversation. He is asked his thoughts on Slater's rank, and says he is happy, having aimed for a top four finish. "Hey man, where did you put Bryan in your poll?" Matt asks, and Christian reveals he also had him at third. Christian agrees that it is weird, before he spots Truth out of the shot and beckons him over. "Whats up dawg? Bryan? Yo I had Bryan, uh, right in the middle, fourth place." At this the three babyfaces are stumped and try to work out the math. "How did he end up third last if we all had him in the top four?" The cameraman offers to them that he was given copies of all the ballots, and pulls out his tablet to show the guys. They discover that all of the other Pros voted Bryan in 7th place and are even more confused. "Dead last, on all of them. How is that even possible? The kid's a natural!" The cameraman reluctantly pipes up again and mentions that last week while doing backstage interviews he kept finding The Miz in secretive conversations with other Pros like Jericho, Punk, Carlito... The three wrestlers consider this information and slowly become incredulous. "Did The Miz...fix the Pros Poll?"

For a moment the babyfaces ponder the dickishness. "What did he do, pay them off!?" They talk about the fact that when WWE gave them their NXT assignments, they were told to treat the competition extremely seriously and work as hard as they could for their Rookies. "And he goes and does this!" Eventually they wonder whether they should tell Bryan, or tell someone, and start to go...somewhere, with the camera following behind. Suddenly Truth sees Miz down a hallway and the three men go to confront him. They accuse Miz and he doesn't even bother to deny it, just silently smirks in a way that plainly answers their question. The faces are aghast and Miz asks them why they even care when Bryan isn't any of their Rookies. They start to say that that isn't the point of NXT but Miz just mocks them with the Annoying Miz Voice, which gets Truth mad enough to shove Miz and try to start a fight that the other two have to break up, saying "he's not even worth it Truth," as they leave the vicinity. The camera stays with Miz and he is asked again if he had the vote rigged. Miz is all "How could I possibly know why someone voted the way they did?" in the most douchiest way possible. He confidently predicts that Bryan will be eliminated tonight, and then on Sunday, he and Jericho will win the Tag Team Titles from the Hart Dynasty and stick it to "that cheating old has been" Bret Hart.

Back from the break, we are alone with R-Truth, who is still mad at The Miz. The cameraman steers him from away from that and towards Otunga's performance in the Ranking. Truth begins to talk about fourth place as being a good showing and something to build on but Otunga walks up and interrupts. "What R-Truth means to say is that he is in disbelief, that the WWE Superstars would vote David Otunga as low as fourth place. I on the A List, I have the body of an Adonis, and I have far more superstar potential than anyone else on NXT. I mean, I get it. Obviously the Pros are jealous of me. Jealous of my talent, of my good looks, of my Hollywood lifestyle, of my beautiful Oscar-winning wife. I am on a level above everyone else here, whether they're Rookies or Pros, but they shouldn't l-" "You above everyone here?" Truth interrupts. "You think you're better than everyone here? Better than me?" This sets Truth off on another rant about Otunga acting above everyone, and how he shouldn't expect the Pros to show him respect when he constantly disrespects them and the business. Otunga remains unmoved. "Like I said. They're jealous."

Otunga arrogantly walks away, and the camera follows his retreat only to spot Chris Jericho nearby. He is congratulated on Barrett finishing first, and Jericho reiterates that it was an obvious decision. Jericho talks about how Barrett reminds him of himself: ambitious, calculating, doing whatever it takes to win. He segues into talking about his match with Miz for the Tag Team Titles at the PPV. "Speaking of The Miz, can you confirm or deny the allegation that The Miz uh, well, bribed or asked you to vote Daniel Bryan last in your Pros Poll?" Jericho casually dodges in a similarly transparent fashion, giving us the trademark Jericho smirk as he saunters off.

A promo video airs featuring interviews from Tarver and Bryan, talking about what it means to stay in the competition and compete on NXT.

Carlito is seen emerging from a locker room and the cameraman approaches. "No you can't talk to Michael Tarver, he's preparing for his match, don't bother him, you can talk to Carlito." Carlito is asked the same question about whether The Miz got him to vote Daniel Bryan in last place. "See, this is what we're talking about. No respect! You come to Carlito and you ask Carlito about Daniel Bryan? Who cares about Daniel Bryan?! Why aren't you asking Carlito about Michael Tarver?!" Carlito goes on to hype up Tarver and his chances tonight. "He's going to beat Daniel Bryan tonight, and then we never have to talk about Daniel Bryan ever again. And that...that's cool."

A promo video for Over the Limit airs.

The cameraman knocks on an open locker room door and Daniel Bryan is stretching and warming up inside. After a routine question about how he's feeling before the elimination match, Bryan is asked if he's aware of what has been happening backstage all night, which he clearly isn't. The cameraman then explains to Bryan how the babyfaces were looking into the Pros Poll results, "long story short, it appears as though The Miz may have...well, conspired with some of the other Pros to vote you last in the Poll, to make sure you were in the bottom two." "He what?" Bryan chuckles. "Wow, and I really thought he liked me!" Bryan is asked if he's not angry about it, but he replies that he can't worry about it now. "The Miz can rig the Pros Poll, he can sabotage all of our tag team matches, he can do whatever he wants, but what The Miz is forgetting is that to be eliminated from NXT, you need to lose an elimination match. And I am not going to lose. I am going to go out there, by myself, without the Miz bringing me down, and do what I do better than everyone else - wrestle - and I am going to win, and there's nothing The Miz can do about that. I am going to win NXT, with or without The Miz's help."

Elimination Match: Daniel Bryan vs Michael Tarver

Both guys come out to their Pros' entrance music, but their Pros do not accompany them. Bryan appears to relish the chance to wrestle without having to worry about the Miz, and goes to town on Tarver for a good while with some tricked out matwork and assorted Bryan offense. Eventually Bryan crashes and burns in the corner and Tarver takes over using a lot of shots to the body and so forth. Bryan fires up and makes a comeback, and ultimately after some back and forth he grabs Tarver's arm and takes him down into a crossface-like maneuver: The LeBell Lock. Tarver immediately taps out and the announcers are impressed with Bryan's seemingly devastating new submission hold.

> Bryan submits Tarver

Daniel Bryan 1-3 (all matches count towards your record) : Michael Tarver is eliminated

Next week on NXT, the remaining seven Rookies look to add to their records before the next Rookie Ranking.

Aaaand, we're back!

Alternate WWE Universe happenings:

Relevant results from Over the Limit PPV on 23rd May:

- The Hart Dynasty retain the Tag Titles against Jericho & Miz

- CM Punk loses his hair to Rey Mysterio in their blow-off match

Also, in real life, Carlito was future endeavoured sometime between the last show and this one.

NXT Season 1, Week 9

25th May 2010 from Cleveland, OH

"Wild and Young", opening video, fireworks, etc.

CM Punk's music hits and everyone is expecting to get their first look at the newly-bald Punk. Instead, Darren Young comes out with only Luke Gallows and Joey Mercury in tow. Scott Stanford on commentary says that he understands that nobody has seen Punk since he lost to Rey. Darren Young grabs the mic and apologises to the crowd. "I know you all wanted to see CM Punk with his brand new, shiny bald head!" Gallows angrily snatches the mic away from him and screams at Young that this is all his fault. "If you hadn't have put that stupid idea into Rey Mysterio's head, none of this would have happened!" He explains that Punk hates Young and wants nothing to do with him anymore, so he (Gallows) is his replacement for the match. He makes it clear that he's not going to be helping him in any way.

Darren Young & Luke Gallows vs Heath Slater & Christian

Gallows basically stands on the apron as D-Young faces off with both Slater and Christian. He doesn't lift a finger and shows zero interest in participating in the match. Young eventually forcibly tags him into the match, and Gallows doesn't even get into the ring until Christian pulls him in physically, which gets Gallows angry enough to fight him back. Soon after he tags out, and goes back to giving zero fucks, ignoring the match and talking to Mercury instead of waiting on the apron. With nobody to tag, Young soon falls to Slater's finisher.

> Slater pins Young

Heath Slater 3-1 : Darren Young 2-2

The SES walks away as Young looks on from the ring, visibly upset about being abandoned.

Various people are interviewed about the The Miz allegedly fixing the Pros Poll last week. You get the impression that it has been the big topic of conversation amongst the wrestlers over the past seven days. The remaining heels involved - Jericho and Regal - are asked to spill the beans but they remain non-committal about admitting to anything. Christian explains that he, Matt and Truth actually asked WWE Management to look into it, but the official response is that there's no evidence that the Pros weren't voting legitimately - how can you prove that they don't rate Bryan last? - so there's not much to be done about it. Darren Young says he feels bad for Bryan, but admits that he's relieved that it kept him out of the bottom two. "Better him than me," he shrugs.

Bryan himself says that he's not surprised that Miz stooped to this level, he expects this kind of thing from a guy as sleazy as Miz. He does admit he was a little hurt by Regal's involvement, since Regal was a mentor to him and helped train him to be a wrestler. He didn't ask the babyface Pros to go to WWE Management on his behalf, but he appreciates their efforts to try and make things fair. Ultimately it's out of his hands, all he can do is try his best to win matches and perform in the ring regardless of whatever Miz does. His match last week proved that he is capable of getting the job done on his own. This leads to highlights being shown of the Bryan-Tarver elimination match, with the talking heads generally impressed with his performance and putting over his new submission hold.

Somewhere in the arena, William Regal is trying to teach Skip Sheffield the art of wrestling. Regal talks about Skip needing to improve his skills before the next Rookie Ranking, as he tries to teach him some technical holds. Skip is totally gung-ho, but is all thumbs and keeps screwing up. He ends up taking a wrong turn and hitting Regal square in the face, at which point Regal, in severe pain, ends the lesson for the day.

Elsewhere, we are with The Miz. He ignores questions about Bryan and boasts proudly about his triumphant homecoming to Cleveland, the mention of which initially gets a cheap pop. He blathers on and on about his friends and family being in attendance, everyone paying to see him and etc., while throwing in lines about how Cleveland is "starved for a star on the level of The Miz" and such things to make it clear that the crowd is supposed to see right through him. He finishes by saying that tonight, despite having to carry Daniel Bryan on his back, he will give the people of Cleveland what they want: a Miz victory, and it will be "awesome".

Matt Hardy rolls up, sarcastically clapping. Matt suggests to Miz that he shouldn't be promising victories when he hasn't won that many matches lately. "You lost to the Hart Dynasty at Over the Limit, you lost to Bret Hart on Monday Night Raw, you've tapped out to the Sharpshooter like a billion times...you're in a bit of a form slump there!" Matt jokes, and Miz gets all up in his face. "How dare you disrespect me when I'm talking to my hometown fans!" Miz brings up Matt's part in going to WWE Management about him and warns him to stay out of his business. "Or what? What are you going to do about it?" Matt replies. He reminds Miz that he has to go through himself and Gabriel if he wants to win tonight, and "you can't bribe your way out of our match Miz."

Daniel Bryan & The Miz vs Justin Gabriel & Matt Hardy

The Miz comes out acting like the big hometown hero in a ridiculous, over the top way. He demands to start and goes after Matt Hardy, still mad about the pre-match incident. When things finally settle down, the three babyfaces get to work and wrestle a clean, back-and-forth babyface match almost as though The Miz isn't even there. Bryan does a lot of workrate stuff with Gabes while (inadvertently) staying away from his own corner. The Miz looks left out and pouts. Eventually, right as Bryan gets on a roll The Miz makes a blind tag at the worst possible moment, which sparks another argument between them. Gabriel from behind knocks Miz into Bryan, who flies off the apron, and then rolls Miz up off the ropes and gets a surprise three count.

> Gabriel pins Miz

Justin Gabriel 3-1 : Daniel Bryan 1-4

The Miz is in complete shock and embarrassment at being rolled up by a Rookie in his hometown. Gabes and Matt celebrate the big win back up the ramp, while Bryan looks frustrated. The Miz throws a tantrum in the ring as the show goes off the air.

Next week on NXT, more teams try to secure wins before the next Rookie Ranking, and Wade Barrett has a special announcement.

Now that I have a spare few months I really want to finish this.

NXT Season 1, Week 10

1st June 2010 from Dallas, TX

"Wild and Young", opening video, fireworks, etc.

Skip Sheffield & William Regal vs David Otunga & R-Truth

Skip once again is overflowing with enthusiasm and demands to start. Truth and Otunga seem to be relatively civil as Truth calmly gives him the floor. Otunga then begins the match by challenging Skip to a posedown. Skip accepts and they go back and forth with the goofy stuff before Otunga hits a cheapshot and the match begins. For a brief period during the match Regal takes the opportunity to stretch Otunga in a "teach him a lesson" way, before he is overcome by Otunga's raw power. Eventually Otunga draws Skip away on the floor, we're left with the two WWE Superstars and Truth pins Regal with Paydirt.

> Truth pins Regal

David Otunga 2-2 : Skip Sheffield 1-3

After the match, Truth is leaving the ring when Otunga pounces on the fallen Regal with clubbing blows, then picks him up and drills him with his standing spinebuster. (I figured out what Otunga's finish was.) Truth is shocked, while Otunga stands proudly over Regal like he made some kind of statement.

An interview segment for Heath Slater airs, as the camera crew followed Slater and Christian during their gym session earlier today. In between workout footage Slater talks more about his 'One Man Band Baybay' personality, while Christian assesses his progress thus far (in short: good, could be better) and states that his goal is to get Slater to the final four.

Wade Barrett and Chris Jericho approach the cameraman backstage and order him to film them. They say that they have a message for all the other Rookies. Jericho brags about Barrett being undefeated and how it's obvious that he'll be #1 again next week in the second Rookie Ranking. They joke that it's almost not worth bothering to compete tonight, but they've come up with a special challenge to make things interesting. "Now we don't know what the idiots in charge of NXT have planned for the rest of this show, and frankly, we don't care," Barrett says, "Here's what's going to happen. Chris Jericho and I are going to go down to that ring, and any Rookie and their Pro who is brave enough - or stupid enough - to challenge us can step up to the plate and try to earn a precious win before next week."

Back from the break, Scott Stanford at ringside informs us that the challenge issued by Barrett & Jericho has been approved and will now be the main event for the show.

The backstage area is abuzz as all the Rookies, especially those with losing records, are excited about this unexpected opportunity to grab another win point. Darren Young sets off at once to find the SES and the camera follows him. He finds them holed up in a private room somewhere. "Hey guys, where's Punk at?" he hopefully asks, to complete disinterest from the SES. "There's an open challenge, I have a chance to get another point, I need to find Punk, we can have a match.." Young persists until Gallows interrupts. "Look, Punk isn't here. And even if he was, he wouldn't help you. You're a disgrace to Straight Edge. We've been left here in his place, and make no mistake, we are not here to help you. We're here to fulfill Punk's contractual obligations until you're eliminated. And the sooner that happens, the better. Now leave us alone, 'Party Boy'" Gallows practically spits the nickname out. "You're not one of us."

As we follow a dejected Young back out into the corridor, through an open door the camera picks up Skip Sheffield ranting and raving to "Mr. Regal" about answering the challenge before the camera pans around to reveal that he is actually in the Trainer's Room, and we see Regal, ice packs on his neck and bandages around his ribs from the previous match, his disbelieving stare evident through grimaces of pain. Skip's excited ramble eventually (eventually...) falters as he slowly realises that Regal has been mauled and they have zero chance of accepting.

Elsewhere, we see Daniel Bryan walking determinedly towards a locker room - The Miz's locker room. The Miz answers his knock but before Bryan even gets a word out he is cut off "Don't - even - THINK - about asking me to accept Barrett's challenge! I have HAD IT WITH YOU! You embarrassed me last week, your ineptitude caused me to get pinned by a ROOKIE! In front of my friends, my family! You humiliated me! So no, I'm not going to help you tonight. You're done! You have no wins, no points, no future! You'll be eliminated next week and I will finally be rid of this horrible nightmare of a show! Now get out of my sight!" The door slams in Bryan's face and he looks immensely frustrated.

Back in the arena Wade Barrett and Chris Jericho saunter down to the ring. They stand there waiting for a team to accept their challenge, making "come on!" gestures and laughing when it seems nobody will step up. Finally, Matt Hardy's music hits and he and Gabriel make their way down.

Wade Barrett & Chris Jericho vs Justin Gabriel & Matt Hardy

The smiles of the heels are quickly extinguished as Gabes and Matt once again use their double team moves to take control as the match begins. Gabriel in particular seems emboldened by his victory over Miz and flies all around the shop before he is eventually stopped after a huge spill off the top to the floor. The heels take over for a while and both Gabes and Matt have a turn as the face in peril. The match goes so long that for the first time on the show we are forced to take a commercial break mid-match. Gabriel eventually gets the second hot tag and runs wild all over again. There is an extended finishing sequence ending in Matt tagging back in, Gabriel crashing and burning on an attempted dive on Barrett, and Matt going for the Twist of Fate but being countered into the Walls of Jericho.

> Jericho pins Matt

Wade Barrett 4-0 : Justin Gabriel 3-2

Next week on NXT, the second Rookie Ranking will be held, and two more Rookies will face the prospect of elimination.
