EricR and I on commentary for start-up Bay Area Indy PPW

Yes, this is totally a cheap plug, but considering there's a lot of people out here who like to scan various indies across the country, a new one started up a couple months back near where myself and EricR lived and we got a chance to do commentary on it. We actually had a three camera presentation and everything!

This is a link to the first match, and the playlist shows the entire event. Standouts include the tag match featuring Jeff Cobb and JR Kratos along with the main featuring Marcus Lewis and Virgil Flynn, but the whole show is a lot of fun. Looking to do another show in the coming weeks. Check it out!

I watched the Cobb/Kratos tag. Didn't think much of the match (not bad, but not good really either), but I thought for a first time effort the commentary was pretty good, and well above the level of what I see out of a lot of indies. I thought there was a good balance of background on the wrestlers, discussion of strategy/tactics they were employing, and calling of the action itself. There were a few moments where Tim and Eric cross talked a bit, but nothing bad really and I'm not sure I would have even noticed if I wasn't paying really close attention to them. I thought Eric could have been a bit more active, but that's minor. My other criticisms would be fairly minor as well namely that stuff like "these guys" was said a few times and should generally be avoided, but that is a tough thing to do particularly with a new promotion featuring talent you might not be completely used to. Also while I thought Tim's excitement on the big spots was good and reactive in the right way, I thought he went to that well a bit too often. But over all I thought it was a strong first time effort

Also unless I'm mistaken, FLIK worked this show too, so at minimum I'll check out that match also.

I haven't actually watched the youtube version of the show yet, but I think Dylan's criticisms are good ones. It was somewhat difficult to "build" the matches on commentary as none of the wrestlers (we talked to all of them before the show) had any idea what was going to happen in their matches. Most of them didn't even know who was going over (we thought we knew at least that, but then two of the results ended up being different than what we were told). So it was tough pointing out something in the match and then it turns out it meant nothing to the match at all. I imagine that was part of Tim building matches with excitement, as we didn't know when a match was ending, or when they were building to a finish, etc.

My favorite match on the show was probably Sir Samurai vs. CJ Kurz, but I also really enjoyed the Cobb tag. Corvus and Truex bumped around for Cobb and Kratos (with Corvus going out of his way to take a couple bumps on the stage), and Cobb is maybe my favorite guy to see live right now. He's an insane athlete but has a great live charisma, doesn't just mindlessly go through stuff without acknowledging the crowd. Also enjoyed the main with Virgil and Marcus, although I think there were parts that couldn't be filmed as both guys wrestled out to the lobby. Crowd loved that though.

The show was incredibly fun live as we only charged $2 for kids tickets, meaning tons of parents showed up with their youngsters, and kids are really the best live wrestling fans possible. So that vibe was great.

Also is FLIK Big Benjamin Johnson? If so I completely forgot that, even though I've gone out of my way to watch some of FLIK's matches that he's mentioned. I even talked to him before the show. Whoops.

I watched the tag that was linked. For the most part you guys were pretty good. I kinda echo what Dylan said. . Eric I really enjoyed some of the reasoning you did on why the wrestlers were doing certain things. Tim I thought you brought a ton of excitement to the matches. With that said It feels like your excitement should build during the match which I'm sure comes with experience and maybe knowing the talent better. . As a team you guys need to find a balance with one another which with some minor adjustments you will. Congrats on a good start.
