Maybe because it seemed like they had nowhere else to go after a groundbreaking 1983, Jim Crockett Promotions had a down year in 1984, losing key talent to the expanding WWF and seeing attendance plummet. Add in the pseudo-retirement of Ricky Steamboat and busy travel schedule of Ric Flair and all that remained was a struggling territory, so much so that even new booker Dusty Rhodes' chosen one Barry Windham bolted to the WWF because his payoffs weren't high enough to cover his car payment. Starrcade '84 is the culmination of a down year, which means it's a big show that's missing the magic or classic moments of its predecessor. The main event had a strong hook, with legendary boxer Joe Lewis referring an NWA World Title defense from Flair against Rhodes with a title and a $1 million purse hanging in the balance. This was the absolute biggest match JCP could put together at this point, even if the match failed as something special in execution. The real show-stealer happened on the undercard when Tully Blanchard defended the NWA TV Title against Ricky Steamboat; the end result a sign of the booking direction to come. Call Starrcade '84 and the year that preceded it the calm before the storm, as this iteration of JCP would be nearly unrecognizable within months.
