Mid-South North American Champion Butch Reed vs Dick Slater - Mid-South 1/11/86

Mid-South was in a period of transition as Butch Reed a mainstay of the promotion would leave for Central States of all places to tag and then feud with Rufus R Jones. Dick Slater would be gone by April as would the man he would feud with Jake the Snake. Mid-South was gearing up for the big UWF re-brand.

Slater has been trying to collect the bounty on Butch Reed set by Ric Flair and recently they had a match in Houston on 12/29 where Slater put up Dark Journey for 30 days which is always a tasteless angle. Here Slater goads Reed to put the title on the line against Dark Journey. About 10 minutes of action I don’t know if it is because Reed is going out the door but not a whole lot to this one. Reed power offense and punches control the beginning. He sets too early Slater takes over but nothing too fancy. Reed drives his face into the mat. Reed piledriver but feels out of place as that doesnt climax the segment But Reed back to punches. Double noggin knocker. Slater Figure-4, handful of tights in O’Connor Roll ref waves it off. Reed misses the charge in the corner and loaded Dark Journey shoe gets the win and title for Slater who was just a traditional champion to UWF re-brand. Fun finish decent match. ***
