[1994-09-03-USWA-TV] Tommy Rich, Buddy Landell and the Moondogs
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1994
The Dark Patriot shows up and he is immediately exposed by Dave Brown as Doug Gilbert. Scott Bowden is appalled that he would jump to that conclusion. It's then time for a Moondogs squash. Bowden lures one of the Moondogs into chasing him into the parking lot while Rich and Buddy show up in the studio and ambush the other Moondog with a chair. The Moondogs are done by this point, and putting one of them in a position to have to sell for a few minutes really exposes how far they have fallen, as that's not exactly their strength. -
[1994-09-03-USWA-TV] Interview: Tommy Rich & Buddy Landell
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1994
Buddy shows the number Moondog chairshots did on his back. He indirectly references the plight of a health-for-profit system, pointing out that now Rich has to go the emergency room to close his cut and it will be money out of his pocket. These guys are furious and are boycotting the USWA. They are on strike! -
[1994-09-03-AJPW-Summer Action Series II] Steve Williams vs Kenta Kobashi
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1994
I think they overreached going this long, but they still had a great match. Childs made the point in the thread on their Carnival match a few months prior about this matchup being one of two meatheads posturing for bragging rights, and that is definitely on display here, with all the staredowns, stalemate shoulderblocks and other such spots in the early stages. This is Doc's first title defense, and common logic tells you he's retaining, but they did an excellent job in selling everyone on Kobashi's chances, starting from the moment he clipped Doc's knee. Kobashi gets some great close calls on Doc from there, but can't put him away. When Doc rallies his comeback, he's great in the champion role. Each time he tries something on Kobashi and it doesn't secure the win, he doesn't have the emotional reaction Kobashi does to his nearfalls, so it's a nice contrast between champion and challenger. I enjoyed this.- 11 replies

Would wrestling benefit from one World Champion?
Loss replied to skinsfan87's topic in Pro Wrestling
Well, the idea used to be to avoid those terms, because wrestlers thinking about their programs in the right framework and context made their stuff better. Cornette has talked about terms like "character" and "backstage" being used by people within wrestling as a relatively recent thing. It's hard to deny that talking about wrestling off of television in these terms has had an impact on the way wrestling is presented on television. Miz's whole gimmick is that he's charismatic. Victator is right that calling it a prop is the kind of thing that led to that mindset, and it does indeed bleed into what you see on television. It's not an insult to wrestlers or anything like that. It's just a mindset that has been proven not to work. -

Finish of Shane Douglas winning the NWA title, followed by him throwing down the NWA title and declaring himself the first ECW World Champion. It had to be here, of course. We cut to Dennis Corraluzzo cutting a promo about stripping the title from Douglas and ... wait, I thought this was a legit doublecross. I'm confused. After that, Todd Gordon does the famous proclamation that NWA Eastern Championship Wrestling is dead and in its case is Extreme Championship Wrestling.

Finish only. Sandman wins after Woman hits Dreamer with the cane. Wrestlers are out to protest and Todd Gordon offers to restart the match, but Dreamer says he'll take the shots, as he signed a contract. Woman tells Dreamer he doesn't have to go through this if he'll kiss her feet, but he tells her to kiss his ass. Dreamer's back looks nasty. This just keeps going and going and going and going.

[1994-08-29-WWF-Summerslam] The Undertaker vs The Undertaker
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1994
Last few minutes. They are clearly filming this in a way where you can't get a good look at Brian Lee's face. The case is closed!- 10 replies

[1994-08-29-WWF-Summerslam] Bret Hart vs Owen Hart (Cage)
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1994
It was logical for sure -- they were both trying to win -- but I was really bored. This was excruciating to watch, more so than any 60-minute draw I've encountered on any yearbook.- 21 replies

Barry obviously could have done way more in 1989 WWF, but I really wish he would have stayed put in the NWA, as there was still more potential for him there to feud with a turned Flair. Luger basically got the spot opened up by Barry when he left, so I'm not sure what would have happened to Lex had he stayed. Also, would Funk have still come in and even so, would he have had the top heel spot? Lots of interesting things to ponder. But I don't want to make this a WCW topic, so I'll switch back to the WWF. Savage was SOOOO hot in '89 that making anyone else the top heel would not have been a good idea. It's hard to figure out a good spot for Barry when Savage was on such a roll. Hogan had just come off of two huge drawing feuds -- Boss Man and Savage -- and that was a pretty tough act to follow. Just ask Curt Hennig.

Looking forward to listening to this very soon! The advantages to working from home speak for themselves. The disadvantage is that there's no commute, so finding time to listen to podcasts is a challenge.

[1994-08-24-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXVIII] Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1994
Yes, this is the one. I agree that after all the hype, Hogan having a one-month title reign would have been a bad idea, but I don't think this was the solution. Flair/Hogan was still the biggest money match WCW had, and there was no reason to show it on free TV at all. They could have easily done Flair/partner (Not sure who that would be considering that Austin was being buried, Arn was otherwise occupied and Vader would have been a horrible idea at this point for quite a few reasons) vs Hogan/Sting, which would have been an equally big match with Flair getting the pin over Sting and laying out Hogan in a post-match angle to make him strong heading into Havoc.- 23 replies

The Road Warriors were called the Legion of Doom because Vince was afraid having the Ultimate Warrior and the Road Warriors on the same roster would cause confusion. There are other examples of this - specifically with the names "Lance" and "Shane".

Lanny Poffo - greatest ever camp/effeminate heel?
Loss replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in The Microscope
Yeah, I really enjoy Lanny Poffo, but he's not the best ever. Adrian Street probably is, and while I haven't seen enough Gorgeous George to say so for myself, I'd be surprised if he wasn't the best ever at this gimmick. -
[1994-08-29-WWF-Summerslam] Bret Hart vs Owen Hart (Cage)
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1994
I wanted to like this, and since I remembered nothing at all about this match, I was looking forward to it. But it was disappointing. I blame the WWF style more than I blame Bret and Owen. Pinfall/submission rules instead of cage escapes would have made for a much better match in this case, because they spent too much of this match climbing. There are a few mildly cool moments where they milk the drama of the escape really well, but not enough to really get into this. Incredibly repetitive match. I didn't even think this was that good, much less deserving of all of the praise it has received. I wish they had actually wrestled (or brawled, or something other than just endless teased escapes) more. This was way too long.- 21 replies

Whoa, it's Davey Boy. He looks like a really muscular office secretary. No one in the Hart Family can really form a sentence. Bret is recovering from strep throat and while he struggles, still does a really good interview.

Talk about it here.

Last few minutes. This genuinely surprised me at the time, as Tatanka was the one with DiBiase all along. Some thought this was a pretty obvious swerve, but at the time, I thought it worked well. Quite the Luger burial, though. This had to be the lowest he had ever been on the card.

They clearly had the Diesel turn planned at this point, as Shawn leaps in front of him at the entrance and the finish is also used to justify Diesel's turn later in the year. This is a fun, heated, really well laid out match. Even though they have booking help, Nash works hard and it's obvious he has improved quite a bit.

[1994-08-29-WWF-Summerslam] Alundra Blayze vs Bull Nakano
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1994
Seeing this in the context of the yearbook is interesting because obviously, this doesn't touch the best Bull matches of the year. But she does a really impressive job of adapting to the WWF style and works a good match in that style. I love how amazed the crowd is by her submissions. I'm surprised Vince allowed Lawler to make all the ugly jokes about Alundra, considering the type of push she was getting at the time.- 15 replies

[1994-08-27-WCW-Saturday Night] Nick Bockwinkel statement
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1994
Ric Flair and Sherri are suspended indefinitely for jeopardizing the career of Hogan at the Clash. WHY are they building sympathy on the heels? Even in the angles, Hogan has the front office in his pocket.- 6 replies

[1994-08-27-WCW-Saturday Night] Dusty Rhodes and Nasty Boys vignette
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1994
This is SOOO overproduced. Dusty shows up at "the baddest bar around" (which has pinball machines, beatniks and very peculiar racial diversity) to ask the Nastys to team with him going into War Games. Sound effects for punches! I'm pretty sure there are two guys dressed like Rob and Fab in the background. Pricelessly bad.- 9 replies

[1994-08-27-WCW-Saturday Night] Cactus Jack and Evad Sullivan
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1994
Cactus and Sullivan are no longer teaming. Cactus' promo style (or wrestling style) no longer fits in with where WCW was going, so I think he made a good move by leaving. Dave is out and begs him not to stop teaming with his brother. He won't drop the issue and gets DDTd on the floor. I'm a little confused by this, because you'd expect Cactus to be the babyface since Sullivan will be going into a feud with Hogan.- 8 replies

They show a clip from the previous week. Brian Lee eats a pin when the Rock & Rolls beat them to win the tag titles. Tammy gets in face after the match and fires him. Lee turns his back to them like an idiot and Tammy ends up spraying him in the eyes with hairspray. They're hyping a Morton/Candido match. Between this and the Gangstas feud coming up, it's obvious they needed two of him. He also mentions that they found someone bigger, stronger and dumber than Lee. This is the introduction to Boo Bradley. Tammy brings him out on a leash and all fours and makes him bark like a dog.
