Why have I read time and time again that this is the match where Liger became "The King of All Juniors" if it was already the case?

Novel match, since they gave these two over 35 minutes and 2/3 falls on TV. I've always liked it for the booking courage as much as anything, as Josh had a great rep as Matt Borne, but hadn't been put in a position like this to deliver a great match in a very long time. As a match, it takes some time to get going for sure. It is a bit telegraphed that they're going long. The second fall is the best for Arn rolling out a bunch of fun arm work. Arn stays on offense pretty much the whole time and Josh finally takes the fall by using Arn's tactics from the first fall against him, pulling Arn's tights where Arn held the ropes in the first fall. Dave is probably right that this was sort of a boring match, but I stayed interested just because it's unique. But there's no real rhythm to it and it's mostly Arn in control the whole time. Borne came to work for his run as Doink, but I'm thinking being presented with this match had to have caught him off guard. Jason Hervey is unbearable on commentary, but Jim Ross takes it in stride.

Paul E. and Madusa do an interview accusing Steamboat of being a sexually harassing pervert, and to leave her alone. In the middle of all this, the lights go dim and Steamboat's music starts playing. Steamboat is in the ring and blows fire for the first time in WCW. Paul E. takes off running and Madusa starts screaming LEAVE ME ALONE YOU WOMAN BEATER. This was heated, but made no sense. I don't understand why this was sold the way it was, but whatever. We segue to a green screen promo with Rude and Madusa.

Jim Ross and Jason Hervey interview Barry Windham, who is wearing his Jesse Ventura t-shirt. There's a fan causing problems heckling and Windham decides to go confront him, but he's hiding his face. Then we realize it's Paul E. And there goes Barry's interview time.

Typically fun Bodies & Cornette interview.

One of Tatanka's earliest matches on TV. We join the match in progress where Martel is doing an insert promo discussing how bad Tatanka smells. Tatanka ends up pushing him off the apron. He ends up getting sprayed in the eyes with Arrogance for being so rude. While leaving the ring, he takes Tatanka's eagle feathers and makes them quite fashionable. I missed Rick Martel's YES, I AM A MODEL button. I'm glad to have it back in my life for a little while.

Bizarre, but it had go on the set for it's strange appeal. Andre "El Gigante" does an interview on UWA TV in English answering really basic fourth grade level questions that are being overdubbed in Spanish.

A little backstory -- UCW got some buzz in the WON and Torch in 1992, and these guys were sort of considered guys who might have a future. This fed was run by alpha fan John McAdam. Since the yearbook is a time capsule, I wanted to include something that was sort of discussed at that point in time, even if it was forgotten about later. This is my first exposure to this, but it's something I've wanted to see for years. Fulton is a bigger guy by indy standards and a smarmy heel. Wilcox is a tremendous flyer and busts out some cool stuff. They probably do too much at times, but it's cool to see two guys working so hard on such a small show and a match with this many highspots -- not just flying from Wilcox, but also great power spots from Fulton -- and a strong face/heel alignment between two no-names is really hard to complain about. They are both a product of the universe they're part of. Fulton wrestles like he wishes he was Steve Williams and Wilcox wrestles like he wishes he was Furnas or Kroffat. For fake Doc vs fake Can-Ams, it's pretty good. Eventually, the action spills outside and Fulton gives Wilcox a piledriver through a table! The match goes to a 20-minute draw. There is an argument that this is in many ways a poorly worked match. I see the logic. It probably is. The piledriver through the table is just another spot and is barely sold. They also do proto-2.9 wrestling at times, before such a thing existed. And there's so many borrowed spots from Liger, Flair, Muta, the AJ guys and maybe some lucha that if you hate tape watching as a wrestling style, you'll probably loathe this. But I'm not sure how much it matters. These guys were working incredibly hard to get noticed, and those types of things weren't commonplace at this point, so it's way less annoying in proper context. There's something charming about it.

Last few minutes of a Choshu IWGP title defense, which was included more to try to capture some of the essence of this Choshu title reign than anything. Scott Norton should never jump off the top rope.

Glad to see someone else likes the triangle match. I always thought it was way better than it was really given credit for.

Hase is spectacular! This may be the performance of his life. I may have said that before about other Hase matches, so maybe he was just really good at stepping up. He's a bloody mess for most of this, taking a crazy beating from Vader and Bigelow before coming back. Highlights include Vader's always tremendous corner punches and Bigelow biting Hase's cut. That's trust, Bam Bam. The spot toward the end where Bigelow reversed the double vertical suplex attempt by nailing both Muto and Hase was great. Muto ended up just beating the 10 count after that, and then it's a bit of a free-for-all These guys set out to do a great match and that's what they did.

This is one of my favorite matches of all time. Liger finds himself. Samurai is a total asshole, spitting in his face before the bell, slapping him, taking him to the mat to rip up his mask, beating him up with a beer bottle and tombstoning him on the arena floor, and this is all in the first minute. After a few more minutes of taunting and general assholery, Liger has to get nasty himself and drops some vicious punches on Samurai and finally suplexes him out of the ring. He removes the padding around the ring and powerbombs him on the floor! And just to make his point, he decides that if Samurai is going to rip masks, so is he. There's this amazing visual where Liger looks at the audience with his mask ripped as if Samurai is the one who has sealed his fate. He locks in a scary looking hammerlock and Samurai screams out in pain. Samurai reaches the ropes, so Liger drags him back to the middle and this time does the Fujiwara armbar. It's like he's just toying with him, but he's also making a point. Samurai is still too good to toy with though. He comes back, with his mask draped entirely around his neck, and wrestles the rest of the match with no mask at all. He nails Liger with a neckbreaker and a scorpion deathdrop, then locks in a scary submission of his own. When Liger finds a way out, he locks in a sleeper with a bodyscissors. When he tries a superplex, Liger fights him and then they enter a stretch where they both seem to be thinking 2-3 moves ahead, and they seem to have counters to everything. Eventually Liger wins out and puts him away with a top rope huracanrana. This is a bit of an outlier for juniors matches, and that's by design. This match couldn't be the formula match, as they'd never live up to it. It's a unique match and moment, one where Liger went from being an exciting guy who fans liked to The Man. Best match in the history of New Japan Pro Wrestling, Liger's career, Samurai's career or the junior division.

Oops, yes I did. Ultimo had great matches everywhere he wrestled. He didn't always have great matches everywhere he wrestled, but he did have great matches everywhere. I'm not sure his best stateside stuff is far behind the rest. There's just a lot less of it.
-
I should also add that the Ultimo handheld from WAR on 3/7/93 is at worst one of the two or three best matches Ultimo ever had. He was a utility player who helped others get where they needed to go for sure, but he should probably get more credit than he does.

[1992-04-14-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Terry Gordy
Loss replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
Gordy is good here, but this is really more Misawa vs capable opponent than Misawa vs Gordy. It feels like the Taue match from 2/93 in that regard, in that I loved this match, but mostly because of what Misawa did. Gordy more than held his own, but Misawa gave a fantastic performance. The German on Gordy was awesome, and I loved the crucifix pin to finish.- 12 replies

Thanks. I'll wait until the '97 yearbook. I'm enjoying seeing stuff in context.

Oh, and I wanted to compare Samurai to Bret not because I think Samurai is necessarily better, but because I think Samurai is worthy of being talked about with wrestlers at Bret's level. Samurai had what I consider the best matches for Liger and Otani, and in the top handful for Benoit also.

I haven't seen a Misawa/Kobashi singles match yet that really did anything for me. I liked the 3/96 match, but as John said, I wasn't enthusiastic about it. In fairness, I have only seen 1993 and 1996 matches they have had against each other. I tend to see Kawada/Kobashi as a much better rivalry than it's given credit for, and Misawa/Kawada talk seems right on point.

Nikita sits down with Jim Ross and Bill Fralic to discuss why he's back in WCW. They show history of his programs with Luger and Sting in '91 and use it as a good opportunity to take a few cheapshots at the recently-departed Luger. Also, Nikita does a decent job making sense of why he and Sting had the falling out they did. He talks about how his life changed when Magnum TA was hurt. They show a clip of Nikita's babyface turn to feud with Flair and WOW, watching that and then watching '92 shows just how far wrestling fell during those years, especially for this group. Then, this gets laid on thick as Nikita brings out a young fan dressed in face paint who says her favorite wrestler is Sting, I guess because Warrior did that the week before on WWF TV.
