  1. Would have been interesting to see the politics if Flair had still been around when Rude came in later in the year. Going with Rude in that spot over Flair would have made more sense, even if Flair was still around. Rude was never a huge draw or anything, but at that point, WCW would have had a hot heel who could work on top and do good promos and have good matches. It would have been the right time to start phasing Flair down.
  2. What a shitty match! Overbooked beyond belief, especially considering they were only going 20 minutes. First, Shawn threatens to walk out and they announce he will lose the match and the belt if he doesn't return. Then, there's a ref bump and almost Shawn pin, but the Smoking Gunns come out to protest. Then, the match gets restarted on the condition that there are two refs -- one on the inside and one outside. Then, Perfect gets the pin, but Shawn has his foot on the rope. The outside ref saw it, and the inside ref didn't, so they restart again. Then, they go to a 20-minute draw. Bu even without that, this just isn't very good. All the wrestling stuff that is here is just cheap heat pandering, like pulling Shawn's trunks down. And Shawn probably goes to Perfect's eyes at least five times. You'd think these two could have a good match in 1993, but you'd be wrong.
  3. Dustin Rhodes is scheduled to come out for a squash and doesn't come out. Rick Rude comes out instead in his self-described "Sunday, go-to-meetin' clothes" and says apologizes that Dustin had some type of accident where he slipped and fell in the locker room. Dustin runs out and wants Rude in the ring, but Dusty tries to talk him out of it. But Dustin breaks through and they start brawling. This is an awesome segment! Good to see Rude finally, even though '93 wasn't that good a year for him.
  4. A Flair For The Gold! I really hated this show and thought Flair was embarrassing doing it, but whatever. We meet Fifi the Maid for the first time and Flair interviews Vader and Harley Race. WCW production also isn't sophisticated to pull something off like this very well. I do like that Vader asks Flair who The Man is, because that's quite the loaded question.
  5. Last few seconds of Lee winning the TV title. Cornette takes a bump for Lee post-match, but the Bodies run-in until the Rock & Rolls even the sides. SMW is heating up!
  6. Dutch does word association with Kevin Sullivan. His answer to "butterflies" is priceless and "flower" is even better!
  7. Tammy quickly interrupts Brian Lee and tells him he has potential but he needs guidance. She asks him to sign a contract and before Lee can answer, Bob Armstrong quickly intervenes and says he can't allow her to come out and just interrupt people. Lee tells her if he wanted a woman to tell him what to do, he'd get married, and she ain't his type.
  8. Last few seconds. Smothers gets the win, then gets in a brawl with Tony Anthony. But DWB smacks him with some brass knucks then paints a yellow streak down his back. Tim Horner comes out with a baseball bat since he believes the punishment should match the crime, and DWB bails. Smothers vows revenge!
  9. Christopher puts his hair up against the Southern title. Excellent match. Jarrett misses a shoulderblock, which leads to Christopher working over his shoulder and doing some cool spots. Lawler is at ringside handing out drawings of a bald Brian Christopher to fans! The girl in the front row holding up her Baldie Brian sign while doing the cabbage patch is cracking me up. They really did a good job of making this a big event, as there is a barber's chair at ringside and other wrestlers are coming out to watch. And this has more heat than any Memphis studio match I've ever seen, because it's so well-worked and has all the really good false finishes. I didn't care for the finish of Steve Doll tripping Jarrett to cost him the match, but aside from that, this may be the best Memphis studio match ever.
  10. Just the post-match from Mid South Coliseum. Lawler and Miss Texas give Sherri a spike piledriver! Cory Maclin goes to Sherri's dressing room, as she lays there in a neckbrace, and Flamingo is beside himself not believing she did this. Sherri eeks out a promo. She says she knows people all over the wrestling world and she's going to call whoever she has to call to come after him and break his neck.
  11. Lest I forget that Sting refusing to do a job for Terry Funk was the worst thing to ever happen that people were still talking about a few years later.
  12. Even Flair felt a little criticism over having the book. There's the infamous line where Dave said he was starting to look like Jimmy Carter, the whole deals with Shane Douglas and Paul E. being driven out of the company for questionable reasons, and probably more. It's hardly harsh criticism compared to other wrestler/bookers, but that's actually pretty biting compared to most of the criticism Flair has historically gotten among the sheet readers.
  13. You're both correct. Cornette is in the territory at the tail end of 1990, but the turn on Lawler happens on either the first or second TV of '91.
  14. I have noticed that the one wrestling move that seems to transcend style, time, country and skill is the clothesline. It gets over in just about any setting, it's easy to execute and it looks great. It may be the best wrestling move ever.
  15. If you can throw a nice clothesline, do a cross armbreaker and connect with a crowd, you can be a perfectly acceptable NJ heavy. Not sure why it always felt like Sasaki was lacking.
  16. The whole tearing down of the World Class banner was epic and had Bischoff been able to hang on to WCW with the Fusient deal, I always thought that would have been a great way to lead to a re-launch. After whatever lame main event they put forth with a bad finish, wrestlers come out and start brawling. Whoever you want as your big star (we'll say Goldberg for this example) starts tearing down everything in the arena that has the letters WCW on it and says the company is done. No more. This prompts other wrestlers to clear the locker room and you get what looks like a full scale riot. The last image is of someone starting to hang up the banner for whatever the new company name would be. Then, as planned at the time, they go black for six weeks or so. Then come back with the new company name, new faces (guys like RVD they would have had by this point) and tournaments to crown new champions. New announcers, new set, with some shuffling of the deck with the roster done during the down time. I'm not saying it definitely would have worked, but it's an interesting idea that would have worked or not worked based on how it was timed and executed.
  17. There is a Flair match with him on Nitro that is pretty good, but that shouldn't be a surprise, as Flair made a career out of working with guys like Goldberg. Anyway, I think it's important to distinguish Sayama's impact and historical significance from his talent. This thread started on the premise that no one was disputing Tiger Mask's influence or popularity at the time. I have no desire to challenge that myself.
  18. It's not going to come to that. We're speaking in hypotheticals that will never happen.
  19. Jim Ross's indignation at the "700 lbs" thing the night of the Hogan/Rock angle was outstanding.
  20. That was criticized at the time, but it's one of the few cases where I'll defend HHH going over, since it did lead to a huge buyrate for Backlash, and the feud still had steam.

  22. Agreed. I have no intentions of closing it. I will just respectfully ask that we keep the topic on Dave, Sayama, anime and funny captions.
  23. This match has some incredible rudos work. All three of them are awesome, so that's not really a surprise. Jericho is green, but charismatic, and it's fun to see Casas really not walk him through sequences, but elevate them where they're something better than they would be otherwise. Chris Jericho is SOOOO the Billy Kidman of EMLL in that he has some things he can do and is surrounded by talented guys who know how to spotlight that well. Oro and Ramirez are terrific too. Great match with everyone working hard and doing their best to make everyone else look as good as possible.
