  1. The Savage video is tremendous and was obviously produced by the WWF and sent in. At the conclusion of the video, Savage walks into the Memphis studio. Savage makes the logical leap that because he previously held the WWF title, their match at Mid South Coliseum is a unification match. He accuses Lawler of talking behind his back and asks Lawler to come out. Savage asks why Lawler is speechless and Lawler says it's his Slim Jim breath! The two go back and forth and Savage rambles about who knows what, but that's part of the appeal. This is every bit as great as you'd think it is.
  2. The best part of the slo-mo of Jarrett's walk to the ring is the guy in the Alabama t-shirt just behind him. This is all stars and stripes and is to "America the Beautiful", because when we think of patriotism, we all think of Jeff Jarrett. Jarrett does a series of really American things -- play basketball with black kids, pet a dog, wear a suit and stand in front of a building and wrestle for the USWA.
  3. You can tell CMLL is hurting based on all the empty seats in the first few rows. Really nice high-flying match that honestly felt a little short for what they were doing. This felt like the first two falls of a great match that ended too soon to hit that level.
  4. From Liger's tour of Australia! Excellent quality handheld, by the way. I've never been overly impressed with most of their matches because it always seemed like they couldn't quite live up to their own standards, but they still have excellent matches. This is more animated than your usual Benoit/Liger match, and I think I like it more for that reason. It's wrestled more American style than New Japan style, in the sense that Liger's comebacks are timed more like they would be for an American audience and Benoit does a lot more complaining about slow counts and that sort of thing. Hey, if you are patient, you may find hidden clips of a Benoit/Malenko match from the same tour that doesn't look nearly as good but has some nice moments.
  5. I'll leave it to someone else to describe that entrance for Tenryu & Ishikawa, but wow. Also, Riki Choshu has the very best entrance music in wrestling history. This isn't a blowaway match like the two February matches in the Tenryu vs New Japan series, but it's still excellent, with the interaction between Tenryu and Choshu still feeling like something special. Kido also looks really good because Tenryu and Ishikawa sell the hell out of his submissions. Tenryu finally puts away Kido with the powerbomb and we get a pretty chaotic post-match brawl which has HASHIMOTO showing up and throwing a table at Tenryu outside the ring and Tenryu even doing MIC WORK. Pretty awesome.
  6. Ah, yes, it was a Tiger Suplex. I actually did YouTube it and watched the Tiger Suplex 85 clip. I didn't realize the Tiger Suplex and the Tiger Suplex 85 are different.
  7. I'm not sure this match or the Taue match would show up in a list of Misawa's top 100 matches of all time. That said, this and the Taue match are must-haves on any Misawa career comp, not because they're among the best matches of his career, but because he is showcased so well. Here, he works the mat well, interacts well with everyone on the other side and is also the most over guy in the match. He really does look like the best wrestler in the world. The match is really Misawa, Kawada and Kikuchi stretching guys for the most part until Taue says enough is enough and gets really aggressive to turn the tide for his team. This is where I do have to agree with the stuff that has been said many times before me of which I've always been skeptical -- Taue was still developing into someone good at this point. He is perfectly fine in getting the big picture across and advancing the match, but he's not great at switching gears. Akiyama and Taue are a weird comparison, but for what they both needed to be doing in this match, Akiyama was better than Taue. As a comp to the other six-man so far on this set, that one is ahead of this one. It was tighter with more focus, and the themes like guys standing off the other team on pin/submission attempts are more consistent from start to finish. This isn't a disappointing match, but it's not as focused as the 1/8 match. The finish is good, with Kawada and Taue brawling on the outside and Misawa pinning Akiyama with a double underhook suplex into a bridge (I'm terrible with move names). The match is laid out well, but it doesn't really jump to the next level because Misawa, Kawada and Kikuchi are too far above the other guys. The turns and alliance switches in the coming months definitely helped even things out.
  8. WCW, way more than even WWE, had a double standard for guys they perceived as stars, so yeah, this wouldn't surprise me if they did something like this. That said, I still generally agree with the sentiment that at this point, TNA is worse than WCW ever was.
  9. Nothing at all.
  10. Crush and Vince make small talk, then he crushes (see what I did!) a coconut to represent what he's going to do to Doink at Wrestlemania.
  11. I love how jdw is making an effort to play nice in the thread and is still used as the example of the overly critical fan. Not directed toward you, Mike, just funny.
  12. There was nothing asshole about that response, Beast. Cool it.

    Which promotion was this?
  14. Agreed. As soon as I said that, I wanted to retract it. I wasn't thinking about people like Hiroshi Hase, who didn't have the output of Taue in '93 but was considerably better. Now I am motivated to rank my top 50 (or 100, depending on my mood) wrestlers for the year at the end of '93 based on what is on this set, pretty much only because I want to see where Taue does fall.
  15. You should pick up the NJ 80s set, Jingus. All the pimped matches are on there, and it's a good place to start.
  16. So I slept on that comment and I don't think that Taue is top 20 in the world during that time. Maybe I'll put together a wrestler's list when I'm done.
  17. I know no one has called this a classic, but I've always believed in Taue. He wasn't at the level of the other three, but very few wrestlers are. Even during this period, he's top 20 in the world.

  19. This wasn't the classic I hoped it would be, so I was a little disappointed, but it's still a great match. It's just not at the level of other All Japan matches of the year. Taue isn't useless, but this is a Misawa performance through and through, as he's the one pacing and carrying the match, and feeding Taue his big spots. In that regard, it's interesting to see Misawa work his magic, and that's what makes this match stand out to me. It's a great Misawa performance, and Taue looks better going out than he did coming in. One thing Taue definitely has going for him though is a sense of timing. He is really good at timing his kickouts for maximum dramatic effect, just inching up at the very last possible millisecond. So while it's not blowaway awesome, it's every bit as good as it needed to be, and it's an interesting match for many reasons.
  20. That's been mentioned a couple of times, and will go on the supplemental set when we put it together.
  21. Believe it or not, I had never seen this match before. Hansen going after Kawada with reckless abandon at the bell genuinely shocked me. Hansen doing a dropkick and then a TOPE THROUGH THE BOTTOM ROPE blew me away. This is a brutal match. Kawada's suplex after Hansen moves the padding around the ring is great. What puts this match over the top is not just the brutality, but that they sell it in a matter befitting the brutality of the match. The look on Hansen's face when he's in the stretch plum is my favorite example of that. But when he's in the driver's seat, Kawada gets a little cocky and starts slapping Hansen, which leads to a comeback. Little touches like lowering his kneepad to drop a knee are awesome. Kawada's multiple cutoffs of the lariat leading to Hansen hitting him so damn hard he knocks himself out of the ring ... wow. At this point, whoever gets in a good shot with the other guy in the right position is going to win. And that's what happens, when Hansen finally takes his head off for the win. What a classic.
  22. Ric Flair returns to TBS! Missy Hyatt runs out screaming at Flair and has to be restrained by security. Flair has words for all the champions in WCW, but isn't revealing his hand just yet. This is a tremendous interview
  23. It's incredible how much heat the presence of Cornette and the Rock & Rolls add to the stuff they're in. These crowds genuinely missed them. This is short, but crazy and really awesome! I wish they had more time, because this had the makings of a great match before the match was stopped.
  24. Cornette says it doesn't matter who the Rock & Rolls tag team partner is, even if they dig up Bela Lugosi! Morton says he can beat any one of their guys in a singles match, and we have a match! Nice match with Eaton working over Morton's knee after he stumbles on a leapfrog. To me, the key thing this shows is that Eaton still had some life in him, despite not really getting much chance in WCW after '92 to show it. The Stud Stable runs in to attack both guys and before you know it, everyone is in the ring brawling. The locker room clears, and it's total mayhem. Great stuff, they're doing a really good job building this three-way feud.
  25. Tracy Smothers does a promo about what the Confederate flag means to him -- being able to say hello to people in a nearby store, being able to leave your house unlocked and not lose anything, being able to have your kids join a church instead of a street gang. This is a great promo, but holy culture war!
