  1. Really terrific squash, with Johnny Starr specifically taking some crazy bumps, including an inside out bump off a top rope clothesline. This was fun!
  2. Joseph Magliano = Joey Maggs He talks about Scott Armstrong, calling him an Alabama redneck and a coward. Scott Armstrong comes out right away and Maggs backs off and completely changes his tune. Another cool find.
  3. The Rock & Rolls are doing a promo. The Bodies, Eaton and Cornette hit the ring and goad them into a fight. This is a great brawl with the Rock & Rolls holding their own at first and finally getting beaten up by the heels. The Stud Stable then come out with chairs and clear the ring. The Bodies leave and now the Stud Stable are doing the same to the Rock & Rolls. Business feels like it's pickin' up in SMW!
  4. Now we get the unedited version of Jim Cornette and the Bodies invading TBS, or at least, they show some of the Cornette lines that didn't air on WCW Saturday Night. There were some great things cut out for sure. This is wrapped up with a Stud Stable promo. Fuller is awesome here, Golden is decent.
  5. Doug Gilbert now wants to be called The King of Rock instead of Doug Gilbert, and laments that brother Eddie is not in the studio today when they're supposed to get a tag title shot against the Harris Brothers. Eddie finally comes out to explain his absence. He says he flew in from Philly a few weeks ago and Doug wasn't there to pick him up, and there was a message getting off the plane not to go anywhere, but just to stand there and wait. Then, Eddie looks up at the TV in the airport and Doug is badmouthing him. Eddie kinda puts him in his place and then says they should finish this up by going to the back and talking this out (a Memphis clue that a beatdown is about to commence), and Doug ambushes him. Later in the show, Eddie is out with Eddie Marlin to announce that Doug Gilbert vs Eddie Gilbert will be taking place at Mid South Coliseum. Eddie does a semi-somber promo about this.
  6. This continues to be awesome! Now, they're doing their own words to "Jump Around".
  7. Lawler responds to Brian Christopher bringing Lex Luger in to the USWA. Love Lawler mixing two 80s songs together: "I'm sure that you think your future is so bright you gotta wear sunglasses at night." Another great Lawler promo. Funny to see him doing wrestling promos on his son.
  8. That Konnan guy was quite the star. This is a nice match to show how hot AAA was at this point in time. The entrances were excellent. The match is a big spectacle, which might as well have been under tornado rules, because everyone is in the whole time. There's nothing really remarkable about this, but it's really fun. Perfectly acceptable main event.
  9. The first fall has a lot of Midnight Express-style heel schtick where the rudos take all sorts of fun bumps and generally get outclassed at every turn. This is mixed in with some excellent daredevil spots and one of the best dive trains ever (at least until the third fall of this same match), with Rey capping things off with a moonsault from the top rope to the floor. I also appreciate that the crowd is way more audible than in a great deal of lucha. This match was also a bit hard to follow at times logically though. First of all, Picudo and Psicosis do some great "teammates tease getting in a fight" stuff, but after rewinding like three times, I still couldn't figure out why that was. Also, I have no idea why Rey's team won the first fall, as there was no pinfall and no submission from what I could tell. Just the dive train, and then the fall was over. Same for the second fall and third fall actually. It's almost like the finishes were an afterthought and the goal was to display what these guys could do, which is admittedly a lot, and that's a noble goal, but it's not necessarily a great match. But in the second fall, Psicosis does the backdrop on Rey from the middle rope, then the fall just ends and they are declared the winners. Great match in terms of the ideas, but they don't really go from one idea to the next very seamlessly, so it feels like a highlight reel instead of a match. I wouldn't fault anyone for loving that, but it's missing something for me. It's possible I'm getting this confused with the second match, which I'll watch later. I don't know that I realized there were two matches until putting together this yearbook. But whatever match I did see was one I gave ***** originally that blew me away. If that's this one, this doesn't hold up, even if it is a very good match. If it's that one, the rematch will hopefully be much better. I do think this is good, but not really deserving of the high praise.
  10. The match is good, but was one of many tough cuts. But the angle felt like a must.
  11. Shane McMahon presents Strikeforce?
  12. I understand why Sayama got over. Precisely because of what Dave said -- he was different. There are many examples you can point to of something different getting over in wrestling that isn't necessarily good. But "getting over" and "being good" are two completely different things. Not everyone who is good is over, and not everyone who is over is good.
  13. If there's a title change in a major promotion where footage exists, we'll have at least a clip of it. This one we'll have in full because it's been contentious enough.
  14. This really deserves its own thread. Someone started a thread at the F4W board called "Wrestling from the 80's really isn't very good". Their point of evidence was that the Flair/Funk I Quit match was slow and boring. There's a lot of interesting stuff in that thread, but I want to focus on one key topic. Dave says, about Hamada being better: He seems to be missing the point. I've never heard anyone criticize Sayama for being different.
  15. No. There will likely be at least one match or something on '92 when we get to that to demonstrate the ridiculousness of Erik's push.
  16. I do like most of the Rock & Rolls/Bodies matches I've seen, even if they feel like second-rate MX/Rock & Rolls matches. But they're still very good. So I think there's a chance I will like some other SMW TV matches. I'm interested in doing a compare/contrast on the Del Ray version of the team when he comes in.
  17. Hotta was great here. Everyone was, really, but I loved her working style. I also have to give Kansai and Ozaki tons of credit for working to her strengths and staying on the mat. What a great team.
  18. Luger hated the name and pushed to have it changed to "The Narcissist".
  19. This was put on since this was the official babyface turn. The matches are about equally good, but Superbrawl III already had several matches. So this had the turn and was a little more rare too.
  20. Last few minutes. The ref bump is brutal. Harley Race brings out a strap for Windham to use, but Sting cuts him off and uses the strap himself to clothesline Windham and then pick up the pin. He then hangs Windham from the ropes with the strap, but Vader comes out for a quick save.
  21. Jim Cornette and the Heavenly Bodies come through the crowd of Center Stage and call out Bill Watts. Cornette is awesome talking about leaving WCW because they tried to make the MX look like idiots. He demands a public apology from Watts for showing footage of the Rock & Rolls beating the Bodies. "You oughta have the Rock & Roll Express arrested for coming out here and killing your ratings." I can't possibly capture everything great about this here. The Rock & Rolls point out that the ring is neutral ground and tells them they should go to the ring and settle this. So we have an impromptu match! The match is really high-energy and has tons of heat. Eaton runs in for the DQ. Great, crazy segment. I would have liked to have seen where this would have gone if Watts stuck around.
  22. Brian Christopher gloats about everything they've done today. Doink calls Jeff Jarrett Ellie May Clampett and then switches gears to be more serious. Christopher then talks about how ashamed he is to be Southern and asks if he can move to NYC with Doink to be around people with brains.
  23. Lawler and Jarrett recap all the chaos Doink has caused on this unreal episode of television. Jarrett bitches about Bret not giving him a title shot when he asked for one several months before. Lawler does one of his typically great babyface promos.
  24. Lawler has had enough of Doink and Brian Christopher, and the WWF for that matter! He says the reason he's not treated as a "good guy" in the WWF is because people up North have their nose in the air and hate Southerners, but he's PROUD to be from Tennessee. "I wouldn't live in New York City if they gave me a penthouse in Trump Plaza." Lawler says Downtown Bruno is also upset with the WWF and asks Bruno to come out and they start tearing into Howard Finkel. They show a clip from WWF TV of Bruno tearing into Finkel, and of Finkel doing a stretcher job after a Kamala splash. Not sure how this makes Bruno look like a babyface, but whatever. But if that didn't, Howard Finkel's promo does! This is seriously amazing and surreal. Finkel does an outstanding heel promo! "Give Downtown Bruno a road map. He wouldn't know the difference between uptown and downtown. That's how dumb he is." Then he pulls out a "big apple" and starts doing a mock Southern accent, which is just awesome. Bruno responds by calling Finkel yankee white trash! WWF vs USWA I knew was coming, but it's still crazy to see.
