Pretty huge segment that was one of the key moments that swung the pendulum in the WWF's favor. HHH seems more relevant immediately and DX lives on.

The Rock promises a surprise for Faarooq later in the evening. Later in the show, Faarooq calls Rock out for a good ass whipping but the entire Nation ends up turning on Faarooq, cementing Rock's status as the leader of the group.

Austin gets an enormous pop coming out and wow does that crowd hate Vince. Vince tries to apologize for previous misunderstandings and the crowd isn't having it. Vince accidentally says he loves Steve Austin because he's so nervous and Austin has some fun with that. I remember thinking Austin was such an asshole at the time. Vince was trying to be reasonable. Still, this was a great segment.

[1998-03-30-WCW-Nitro] Sting & Lex Luger vs Kevin Nash & Randy Savage
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
Last few minutes. Nash's surprise partner was Savage. Crowd is really into this. The NWO guys come out to help their comrades and Nash pins Luger, so the NWO is still a unit for now. Brutus Beefcake doing a stunner? Please.- 4 replies

Jericho ripped up a sign from a fan supporting him, which became a staple over time. Of course, the announcers can't be bothered to notice as they are too busy yapping about the NWO. Jericho is dedicating the match to the memory of Dean Malenko. He quotes Hanson! Marty Jannetty comes out to the old Steve Austin music. Mike Tenay mentions that WCW has an open door policy. When did WCW become World Class? Short match that Jericho wins. Post-match, he decides to list all of his 1004 holds. The Saskatchewan Spinning Nerve Hold! I love that they take a commercial break and come back and he's up to the 700s with the crowd booing like crazy. I hate that they cut away from this so quickly to do their top of the hour fireworks. Meanwhile, Prince Iaukea comes out for his match while Jericho is still in the ring listing everything ("... the Super Blizzard!") and refuses to let Jericho continue. The paper gets torn and Jericho screams, "GIVE ME MY HOLDS!" Awesome stuff. Jericho is the most fun guy in WCW.

All the talk about Dennis Rodman just seems so desperate the night after the WWF hit a home run. The NWO is out, sans Nash and Savage, and Hogan is hyping a Nitro main event against Piper. This match has definitely run its course by this point. The Apocalypse is renamed The Disciple. Hogan then calls out Nash, leaving Nash to come out pretty quickly. Hogan tells Nash to get a partner for tonight and Nash tries to create paranoia among the rest of the group, claiming that he already has a partner and to just guess who it is. Hogan vs Nash could never be done right because of egos, but it was a fresh direction. They just never followed through with it.

[1998-03-29-WWF-Wrestlemania XIV] Post-Show Press Conference
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
I like it that Austin is just as hungry and pissed off now that he's champion. I thought DX interrupted this?? Was that something else? -
[1998-03-29-WWF-Wrestlemania XIV] Shawn Michaels vs Steve Austin
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
I am far, far higher on this match than anyone else here, I think because I see something much deeper here than just the mechanics of the match. This is a torch passing. But it's not just a torch passing. The guy passing the torch is limping his way to the next guy in the assembly line who isn't in great shape either. And I think somewhere in all of this is a statement about wrestlers not really being treated as human beings, be it by fans, promoters, their peers ... not even really respecting their own mortality in some ways. Michaels put on an incredibly gutsy performance and this felt like a match where they had to deviate from what they had planned when his back failed him. So he went back to basics and worked the leg and stayed on the mat, and he did it incredibly well. And working a match that basic on such a big stage at a time when Shawn really needed to be the showstopper and just couldn't do it one last time makes for a fascinating viewing. It demonstrates that it was time. Even if Austin wasn't red hot, even if the WWF wasn't resurgent ... Shawn needed to simply go home. I don't know - I need to fully formulate my thoughts, but I think there's a lot more to this match than meets the eye. How can a match where both guys were so obviously hurting and managed to gut it out be disappointing? I thought it was great in fact. Add in the backdrop of a guy whose rep for being unprofessional was so well-known that he made a catchphrase out of it actually losing decisively here. I can't wait to try to put it in the proper words when doing the e-book.- 14 replies

Last few minutes. Right finish and right post-match too, with Paul Bearer taking a bump and the feud continuing. At this point, there was still too much momentum in the feud to end it. I know it's hard to imagine such a time existed.

My favorite Wrestlemania running gag, and kudos to Pete Rose for understanding exactly who he was and what his purpose was there. This was hilarious.

I thought this was fun, but it didn't get as violent as I hoped either. The fall from the ladder into the dumpster was impressive, but it was never clear why they were on the ladder anyway. I understand why they didn't go too far on a show where they were getting so much new exposure. But I don't understand doing a Dusty Finish in a match like this at all.

[1998-03-29-WWF-Wrestlemania XIV] The Rock and Gennifer Flowers
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
Classic segment that was one of the keys in making The Rock a star. They discuss homelessness, the judicial system and how he would run the White House. The hung jury line is still funny. -
[1998-03-29-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Toshiaki Kawada
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
I agree that this isn't in the upper echelon of Misawa-Kawada matches, but it doesn't really need to be. This feels on par with the broken orbital bone match in '95 as a good time capsule of what these two could do at this point in time, but I think I'd peg it even slightly below that. I like the slower pace, and I like that they are able to do it here without boring me to tears like they did in their 6/97 match. After seeing this feud play out in various singles matches, tag matches and six-mans for the previous five years, it feels awfully played out and stale here. So while the match is technically good, it's also such a stale matchup for me at this point in my 90s watching, and it's hard to look past that. This is nothing that I'll remember even five minutes from now, which I'll admit says a lot about the high standard they set, as this is much better than many matches between other wrestlers that no one calls a classic but that get a decent amount of play for being good. Sometimes, the level of their best stuff works against them.- 7 replies

Start of dissension between Hogan and Nash, which does at least feel fresh, especially compared to Hogan-Savage. Who knows why they switched focus from Savage, but I think it was a good switch. Nash doesn't get to do too much talking here, but he does get to ask why Syxx doesn't have a job, which gives us Hogan's famous "cut the mustard" line.

[1998-03-26-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Toshiaki Kawada vs Jun Akiyama
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
I agree that this was a great way to establish Akiyama in the upper echelon in terms of attitude. He's grown even since 1996 and while he is still the young guy facing someone more established, he's wrestling with a lot more confidence and holding his own. He feels about like Kobashi did when he was right on the cusp of breaking through. I don't get people not really getting behind Akiyama either, as it's hard for me to see anything that's blatantly missing. No one bought the stretch plum as any type of finish, but that wasn't really the point. It was more about Akiyama's audacity in locking it in in the first place. This got off to a slow start but got really hot toward the end when Kawada had to start digging deep to put Akiyama away. I thought this did quite a bit to get Akiyama over even more at this level.- 6 replies

I really wish Lawler hadn't had the scare a few years ago for obvious reasons, but for selfish reasons, I think they could have done an amazing match/angle on TV with Lawler and Lesnar.

HHH has some words for Owen, and Shawn and HHH single out this obviously drugged out woman at ringside and they make sure everyone knows they know she's a skank. Shawn does one of his better heel promos making fun of Austin/Vince as having a chick fight and giving himself credibility. Shawn is fantastic here and this is the last time we'll really see him in his best role I guess.

This was effective for sure. I really don't enjoy the overwrought Undertaker-Kane feud, but within the context of this feud, this works really well in creating emotion for the match.

I think they gave up on Jeff Jarrett's initial gimmick a little quickly. It wasn't setting the world on fire, but returning to Double J was a bad idea after Jarrett gave that promo burying the gimmick when he returned. I do love him going all Cher with the intro though, riding a horse down the entrance ramp while wearing light-up ring attire. Tennessee Lee is also here now.
