I'm at a loss as to why anyone would be intimidated by Low-Ki. Just because he has a deep voice and is a sloppy worker? It's not like he's a physical giant or possesses any legit shooting skills that I'm aware of to make people think he could beat anyone's ass legit.

Massively hyped and then buried at the event
sek69 replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Pro Wrestling
To show how quick he was gone, I actually had to look up Undertaker's Wrestlemania matches to remember Nathan Jones's name. They ran tons of videos hyping his debut, and he was so bad they ended up pulling him from Mania and putting Taker in a handicap match. -
I can't recall a time where WWE seems to make such an effort to try to embarrass "the sheets" which is pretty much always code for Dave. Joey Styles in particular seemed to be the point man on Twitter, really belaboring the point that the sheets are always wrong (except those times where they aren't wrong, which is more often than not). I got the impression Vince was standing behind him looking over his shoulder while he was typing. What's weird is even if Dave is wrong and they aren't getting rid of FCW entirely, why cancel the TV show? Half of the point of developmental is getting guys comfortable working on TV. Local TV, but still.

Everyone who was around the WWF at the time of the first Wrestlemania hates Mr. T, or at least thinks he was a pain in the ass. Piper's just the most vocal about it because, well... he's Piper, and he seems mad still over having to do the boxing match at WM2.

So I've been watching CMLL on a regular basis for over a year now since we got the Hispanic channel package up here, and I have to wonder why they keep using Porky as much as they do. It's one thing if it was an occasional "special attraction" type deal, but it seems like he's on nearly every card these days. I realize the family connections and how there's at least 3 members of his family getting at least somewhat pushed, but watching him in the ring is getting scary. He's always been kind of a lucha Buddy Rose in the sense that even when he got morbidly obese he could still work fairly well for someone his size, but now when he gets whipped in the ropes it seems like it takes 10 minutes for him to get to the other side. Almost every move the opposing team does on him has to be a double team, and even then sometimes they have a hard time getting him up. He's been big for a while, and I know they've run angles based off it before, but he's looking more and more like a ticking time bomb.
-
So that wasn't an angle and they left for real? Doesn't Damien do a lot of work behind the scenes like bookkeeping for them?

Ego maniacal or not, if I owned "Eric Ritz's Drywall Installation" and my sister's shitty kid started up "Ritz Drywallers" and were doing a bad job installing drywall, I would be pissed and tell my nephew to stop being a fuck up and go to DeVry and learn a different fucking trade. True, but Santo did it because he wants his kid to be the one to claim the third generation legacy. It would be like suing your nephew because you wanted your son (who's not even old enough to do drywall installation) to be the only one who could use the family name in the business. It's not like Axel was making false claims, Santo *is* his grandfather, it's not his fault his uncle is a douche. Didn't other family members have to step in before over things he's tried to do with the name?

The Jim Ross Is A Grouchy Hateful Vile Human Being thread
sek69 replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
My impression is that Michael's there more or less to agree with JR to make him seem less like a grouchy hateful human being. If you notice, at least on prior episodes (I haven't watched the new ones yet), every time JR says something that comes off even somewhat dickish Michael will jump in with a related story. -
The twist was that the Dr. Wagner gimmick originally was that he was not just an evil doctor, but an evil Nazi doctor (hence the German pronunciation of Wagner). I think that part was more or less phased out long before Jr. came along. What's funny is his son is wrestling now and I think he's going by Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. You'd think just going by III would be easier, but I guess that would make people think he's just the third guy doing the gimmick instead of third generation.
-
That's Hijo del Medico Asesino, and yeah it's sort of a ripoff of Wagner but the evil doctor gimmick is kind of a trope in lucha.

The comments I've heard was how the cartels shake down companies for a substantial cut of the house for protection, not that they bankroll the shows themselves. As far as Konnan's comments, I just thought it was odd for him to kind of make that accusation when Santo and AAA are tangled in lawsuits over the DVDs made of his appearance on their big show a few years back. I know Mexico's legal system does a lot of things differently than most places, but I figured not slandering someone you're in litigation with was a universal truth.
-
Wow, listening to Konnan on WOL with Bryan basically just imply Hijo del Santo's shows are bankrolled by drug lords. He mentioned earlier that Tijuana is one of the areas the previous President of Mexico left to the drug cartels in order to keep war from breaking out (which did happen when the next President decided to not keep the same deal in place), then later on when talking about Santo mentioned how he gets people to finance the shows he runs, especially in Tijuana, and threw in a "read between the lines" in an obvious wink-wink reference Dave himself would be proud of.

How are they able to definitively determine a cause of death if his organs were all in a state of decomposition at the level they appear to be?

He's been in the doghouse for so long it's easy to forget he's actually not as bad as the impression you get from some of his WWE work. If I'm correct, I think he was the guy who got Cornette fired from OVW for laughing at the Boogeyman when he was supposed to sell fear (and good lord has time only helped his cause on that one). Ever since then it seems like WWE looks for the slightest reason to shit on the guy. He got the "can't work" tag stuck to him almost immediately after his debut, which I'm sure is at least partially because he doesn't work like Generic Developmental Guy #7089. In fact, that might have even helped him in getting over now since it seems like the crowd sort of picks up he kind of deserves better than being the goofy dude sent out for comic relief and actually seemed to be willing him to win matches. He had me actually thinking for a second they were going to have him win the World Title when clearly there was no way, which is probably the first time I felt that since the famous Jeff Hardy match with Taker.
-
So they put the US title on Santino tonight, and a few things occurred to me. First off, WWE seems to actually be acknowledging someone caught on with the audience. Yes, it's the US title and it can be (correctly) argued it doesn't mean shit, but it's a sharp change from jobbing him out the last few weeks after getting a giant reaction the weeks leading up to the Chamber PPV and at the show itself. It makes sense when you think about it, his character is the embodiment of the plucky babyface that used to be a staple in wrestling. He has that goofy charisma that makes it easy to get behind him, and he does some of the best comebacks I've seen in a while. He gets the crowd engaged, even when everyone knows he's jobbing, which is something a great majority of the roster seems incapable of doing. The pop he got for winning was one of the largest in recent memory, even though they tried to tramp it down with teasing the false Dusty Finish with Johnny Ace. I just wonder what side the IWC will come down on this, happy a guy who got himself over got rewarded, or outraged a comedy gimmick wrestler was put over a superior wrestler like Swagger.
-
I wouldn't stop watching entirely over the far gimmick, it just comes across as mean and petty. Not to mention completely unnecessary, even if she had some kind of transgression that usually justifies such childish behavior in wrestling. Why have all that good wrestling on TV, only to leave a bad taste in people's mouths with such silly bullshit?
-
I think a lot of people are seeing the fart angle as Vince/WWE humiliating a woman for no reason and that makes people leery based on history.
-
He looked like a naturally small dude taking steroids. Compare 1997 Shawn to 2011 Shawn and you can see the difference. Piper had the same bloated look after he started with the WWF and Vince thought he was too small to be a wrestler. Just because someone's not ripped doesn't mean they aren't on something. I will grant in this case, some of it does likely come from all the drinking and recreational drug use he was doing at the time as well. It's also funny how Hunter opened his induction speech with a string of jokes on the subject of how small Shawn is now. My favorite was him mentioning they had to close the garage doors in the building because it was windy outside and Shawn might blow off the stage.
-
LOL, watching the HBK HOF show on WWE On Demand, according to Shawn he bulked up in the 90s because he was eating 10 egg whites w/ pancakes every day for breakfast with Kevin Nash and has no idea how he flunked a steroid test. He swore to God, so you know he's telling the truth here (/sarcasm).

It seems that the issue is that instead of taking a carriage deal that may not make them tons of money but gets their foot in the door, WWE is expecting cable/satellite companies to pay top dollar right out if the box and getting the door slammed in their faces. Even the NBA/NHL/MLB had to start small with their networks but eventually were able to grow theirs into a decent operation (the NFL played hardball from the jump, but they are pretty much the only ones who had the juice to do that). Now to be fair, any other programming that gets ratings WWE does would probably at least be able to have a conversation about carriage, but Vince/WWE seems to not understand that despite all the years of PG they still are seen by non-fans as if the Attitude Era still is going on.

Pretty sure Orton was set to win the title at some point from Bryan, but it seemed to be some combination of Orton getting injured and either Vince or someone with Vince's ear finally noticing heel Bryan is awesome and not wanting to derail his momentum.

Is TNA the worst wrestling promotion in history?
sek69 replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
If Garrett went to OVW for a few years he'd probably be at least decent, but he didn't so there you go. Not only is he going to get the kneejerk negative reaction from fans that comes with blatant nepotism, they put him out there at an ability level they never would if his name was Garrett Smith. Also I did a GIS for what art mentioned and lol'd: -
The 50-50 crowd split they want so bad is a pipe dream to say the least. Not only will it be next to impossible to get any cheers for Cena that day, I'm pretty sure Rock could kill a puppy on Raw next week and not get completely booed in Miami.
-
Somewhere Jerry Lawler and Austin Idol are kicking themselves over the missed angle opportunity.
-
JR's already implying there's legit heat between Cena and Rock, someone asked on Twitter and he replied "if there wasn't before there is now" or something to that effect.
