[1999-03-06-AJPW-Excite Series] Jumbo Tsuruta Retirement Ceremony
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in March 1999
He'd been confined to old man comedy matches since 93, and here Jumbo formally concludes a legendary career. This may well have been his final TV appearance before his death the following year. -
This is just like Shawn Michaels in the feud against Bret Hart. Hogan and HBK trying to get to get fans on their side by explaining that they are driven by the noble goals of fame and greed. Their lousy, no good opponents on the other hand just love wrestling and put it first in their lives. Such despicable motivations are clearly worthy of the ire of all fans.

Prayers had taken a back seat in wrestling since Hogan had turned heel. Vitamins however had not.
-
My mind drifts to the "You'll be back" chant at Public Enemies ECW farewell. That proved to be too optimistic. They really were complete and utter shit.

I used to watch Mortal Kombat Conquest back in the day. It was better than you might think honestly! A Mortal Kombat themed wrestling promotion has always been a dream of mine. You just need to check out Community Creations on one of the WWE games to see I'm far from the only one. The idea would probably work best in Mexico. Tostado!

[1999-02-27-MPPW-TV] Sean Stasiak, Mae Young & Stacy Carter
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in February 1999
Mae Young playing the role of Stasiak's mother is absolute gold. I did some checking and she gave birth to him at the ripe old age of 48. She immediately started trashing Stacey and swinging her purse. The look that she gave the hecklers in the crowd was priceless.- 7 replies

There's controversy over somebody calling wrestling fake. Have I just woken up in 1975?

Vince vs the Dateline host is man against boy. McMahon had been dealing with scumbags all his career. Plus he has a total absence of remorse or sense of shame. The Bill Clinton reference was gloriously crass. Bischoff sounds ridiculous here, even if you didn't know anything about him. Most people in Vince's position would've balked in the face of such an obvious attempted hatchet job. He's able to turn it into a pure promotional piece whilst stroking his ego the whole time.

[1999-02-21-RINGS] Akira Maeda vs Alexander Karelin / Music Video: Akira Maeda
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in February 1999
The match is really weird. It looks like Karelin keeps setting Maeda up and waiting for him to pull off a big counter move. But Akira has absolutely nothing in the tank and the ref has to make a mercy killing. The tribute video afterwards was pretty cool.- 8 replies

[1999-02-21-WCW-Superbrawl IX] Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in February 1999
I'm sure somebody has done a count of the number of turns there were during the Monday Night era in WCW. It feels like hundreds. The commentators were really struggling to sum up the willpower for the requisite shock and outrage. It's a testament to Flair that he was able to inject some highlights into this atrociously booked feud.- 9 replies

[1999-02-22-WCW-Nitro] NWO Four Horsemen & Roddy Piper Parody
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in February 1999
Not the best of the NWO parodies but it had its moments. Hogan as Flair was the best. Nash doing the neighing with the toy ponies was a highlight too.- 5 replies

Rather than the match I could just remember Michael Cole shouting "What does it mean?". Not a great memory. Horrible acting from Vince. I was actually laughing throughout a lot of this thinking about Undertaker the taxi driver. Looking forward to that soon. Paul Bearer really should have taught his son not to play with fire. How many times is this now he's been set alight?

[1999-02-18-WCW-Thunder] Lex Luger and Rey Misterio Jr
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in February 1999
Lex Luger gives another example of the downside of steroids. -
[1999-02-14-WWF-St. Valentine's Day Massacre] Val Venis vs Ken Shamrock
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in February 1999
Half a year ago Shamrock had been super over. Now the fans don't care about him. Injecting Mr Ass into the feud for whatever reason wasn't helping things either. I'll just quickly outline some of the major problems to explain why it's so dead out there: 1) Shamrock was a good face but a crap heel. 2) The face in the feud was a scumbag porn star who slept around with other wrestlers family members. 3) Nobody ever gave a shit about Billy as a singles competitor. 4) Nobody believes that Ryan is Ken's sister. Is Ryan even a unisex name? She'd only been around 10 minutes so had no established relationship with Ken. 5) Like I mentioned earlier, WTF is Ass even doing here in the first place? -
I loved how they had the Four Corners and Jumbo there to pay tribute. Aside from Tenryu they were his five greatest students. Then the choked up ring announcer giving the great man one final introduction. RIP to one of the true legends of the sport. As a combined wrestler, promoter and booker he was the best. By the standards of wrestling promoters he was pretty much a saint as well.

[1999-01-31-WWF-Halftime Heat] The Rock vs Mankind (Empty Arena)
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in January 1999
Absurd though it was, I did find this entertaining. More action adventure than a wrestling match. Rock got to do plenty of talking, which is his biggest strength. Whilst it was obvious it was shot in multiple stages, having that forklift-cam shot was a bit much.- 11 replies

[1999-02-08-WCW-Nitro] DDP, Scott Steiner and Kimberly
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in February 1999
If it wasn't a stunt double then Kimberly was crazy for doing that bump. Steiner acts like a psychotic, deranged lunatic and commits a serious criminal act. But it's not real so who cares? Next segment.- 5 replies

A minor celebrity in his first wrestling match gets turned on by an even more minor celebrity for no apparent reason. Will Sasso did have a good physique for bumping. Bret had stopped giving a shit and was just collecting paychecks. I knew that WCW was crap around this time, but the sheer level of awfulness this month has been staggering.

Great to see the babyface come back from the earlier beatdown and get his revenge on the heels. I'm so out of date here.

[1999-02-13-WWF-Saturday Night Raw] Goldust vs Gillberg
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in February 1999
A nice reminder of how shitty the undercard was most of the time.
