I don't even care though that he's bad at karate. After the year WCW fans had sat through, they deserved to see someone like Ricky Steamboat if they stuck it out to November.

Fortunately, and I don't think anyone says this about WCW too often, that tag turned out basically perfect the way it was. My only objection to it is how mind blowing it would have been if it was 10 minutes longer. Cut out the non-title matches and make this a double heat affair. Dustin Rhodes is a fine face in peril.

Easily one of my favorite Clash shows of all time. You guys did a great job. To add to the dragon conversation that I never thought about it until listening to this podcast, but is it the least bit possible that Tony was referring to "the Dragon" as someone from Japan being Tatsumi Fujinami (Steamboat and Fujinami are very similar in size) or was Fujinami seen by the WCW brass despite being the IWGP heavyweight champ as a failed experiment at this point that they wouldn't dare revisit? I think I'm just reading too much into one little comment.

Let me ask you this: was the Vince McMahon heel turn inevitable storyline-wise or was he merely a victim of circumstance who stumbled into this great change in wrestling? It's not like he didn't already work heel low-key in Memphis several years before with basically the same Mr. McMahon character traits. The paradigm seems to be that he "screwed" Bret in real life, the people didn't like that, so then WWF capitalized on this tough situation and slowly turned Vince into the main heel on the show, but everything about the product at the time says differently. People look at this thing behind the scenes way too much and don't look enough at the product. The seeds were planted for a Vince heel turn as soon as Bret shoved Vince down in the Sid cage match back in February.

I'm surprised we are three pages in and no one is going to have the discussion that it was all a work?

Where the Big Boys Play #63 - Superbrawl I
PDRMatt replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Catching up on the show here and I figured I would comment. I think now that I have access to unedited PPVs through the WWE Network, I may redo some of my old recaps. Reading them now, some of them are just terrible. Looks like I need to rewatch Reed/Simmons for sure, lol. This review was written probably 2006 even though the post date says 2008, so I'm sure my opinion of the show as a whole would be much different today. At least, I would hope so. Aside from that, as far as the Steiners/Sting & Luger match goes for getting ****1/2, the psychology in this match (at least the way I see it) is that they *do* have to make it a bombfest in order for Sting and Luger to have a chance against the Steiners, and vice versa. They're not going to go about this match the way they normally would because everyone here is perceived to be at the top of their game. If you look at this match from a booking standpoint since neither team are heels, an extended 'face in peril' formula match would turn one side heel over the other, and you don't want that since that's not in the future plans. The most obvious booking choice you really have is to let both sides switch off having control and throwing bombs at each other. The crowd is so enthralled with all the action and all the moves they love seeing, that they're less likely to feel sympathy in the moment for the team receiving the bombs, and sympathy for one side over the other is not what you want here. -
I wouldn't go that far, but I do think he could be an interesting character that could have some layers to him if they booked it right.

Don't forget Roddy's Jim Barnett impression as he's talking to the Gang while being taken away in a police car for unpaid parking tickets. "my boys...my boys."

Yeah, Bo Dallas could interrupt another "update on Daniel Bryan's condition" promo. Then since Bryan can't compete, he re-introduces Sami Zayn to Bo Dallas. It gives Zayn the rub from a main-eventer and creates an instant threat to Bo's character. This could get deep if they let it. Bo could start questioning himself for the first time...
-
Yeah, and I'm fine with making Zayn higher than mid-card. In fact, I would love to see him high on the card. There's just not a ton of solid mid-card feuds right now, and he needs to start somewhere. Sheamus and Cesaro was a good back and forth for a few weeks over the US title, but that doesn't look like it's continuing. Ziggler and Miz over the IC title isn't all that interesting and doesn't feel very fresh to me. Rusev and Swagger got pretty hot there until they will ultimately cool it down due to real-life situations. And does Bo Dallas really do anything consistently with anyone? He was beating up El Torito and giving advice to various mid-carders, but I'd like to see him feud with someone regularly who is closer to his skill level to get a feel as to whether or not his in-ring ability matches his character.
-
Does anyone think the person to end Bo Dallas' streak should be from NXT? Otherwise, it seems like a waste if it's not to give the rub to not just the one with the streak, but also the person who ENDS the streak. I think a Zayn/Dallas feud could be a fun little mid-card rivalry. They all have to start somewhere.
-
What would you think about debuting Sami Zayn the same way the WWF did with Taz? Now hopefully, Zayn will have a much more successful career in WWE than Taz, but what if they set up Zayn as a special mystery opponent for Bo Dallas at SummerSlam. They already have a little history in NXT, Dallas can't have the streak live on forever, and Zayn certainly would want end the streak to make a name for himself. With SummerSlam being in LA, it's a crowd that would presumably know who Sami Zayn is already, so he would more than likely get a good reaction. It wouldn't even need to be a decisive win, just a quick three-count in an 8-10 min match. It could be a fun way to introduce Zayn who certainly deserves to be on the big stage and gives him a big moment, which is what WWE loves.

Ugh, yeah Jericho and Bray have so little chemistry. "You wanna get crazy? I can get crazy." When has Jericho ever proved to be Wyatt family crazy? Not buying it. He didn't get crazy at Battleground, and he doesn't really have to get any crazier now that he's already beaten Bray. Tonight, Bray will cut another promo about being "reborn" after another loss.

[1997-09-22-WWF-Raw] Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker
PDRMatt replied to Loss's topic in September 1997
Loved seeing the little old lady trying to sneak the chair away from HBK. Shawn and Hunter scare her out of her wits, especially Hunter. -
Great third fall and all, but with Harper and Rowan losing again, where do they go from here with the WWE tag titles? Assuming they do still care about the tag division. The Usos really have no other opponents (Dust Brothers are unfocused, Rybaxel aren't championship material...what other tag teams exist?), but why keep on giving Harper and Rowan monthly title shots when they keep losing in the title match? Are they just going to put them in another gimmick match at SummerSlam? With Bray losing to Jericho as well, doesn't the Wyatt family lose a ton of credibility with all these losses in a row? Does logical booking even factor in anymore? Is everything random? Why are we here? Is life just a series of random events? Is there no order to the universe?!?!

Hey yo....I'm up to the end of August 1997 Nitros and for the life of me, I can't figure out when Scott Hall starts doing these surveys. Does anybody have a clue on when he starts doing these? It's not a big deal, but it's bugging me because I'm always expecting to see him do the survey and it never comes, so I'm just wondering if anybody knows when I should start to expect them. Is it in September? October? November? Much appreciated.

[1996-03-11-WCW-Nitro] Road Warriors vs Rick & Scott Steiner
PDRMatt replied to Loss's topic in March 1996
Nitro 3/11/96 was my first ever wrestling show, so this match will always be special to me as I was a big Steiners fan but hadnt seen them in years at that point. At the time (being that I was only 9), I didnt realize that the Steiners and the Road Warriors rarely ever faced one another either. While the match might not be top of the line since they were both past their primes, it was very cool to see. Odd that the Steiners lost their reintroduction to the WCW audience; especially since the Road Warriors weren't exactly bulletproof in 1996.- 14 replies

I always enjoyed the HBK comeback in the Team Austin vs. Team Bischoff match at Survivor Series 03. Probably wouldn't call it "the best" Survivor Series tag, but it was a fun one you might not think about. Another favorite that has been unmentioned is Team Piper vs. Team Flair match at Survivor Series 91. Really the highlights of both shows.

Call me crazy, but doesn't Renee not wearing high heels make the men she's supposed to be interviewing and where all the focus is supposed to be going stand out more? If WWE is still a "big man territory" so to speak, shouldnt little stuff matter like that to the powers that be? If Daniel Bryan (for example) no longer came up to Renee's eyeline, that should be seen to them as a good thing, right? Seems like this is something WWE would encourage.
-
I always liked Dusty Rhodes as a hot tag guy, but more so because im a mark for the bionic elbow, how the heels cower as soon as he walks through the ropes, and the crowd digging all of it, too. Think his Clash #2 match with Sting against Arn and Tully as an example. Kerry and Kevin Von Erich were great "hot tag" guys as well because they were both very intense and ready to get after them Freebirds.

Lately I've been watching 1983 WCCW TV and his commentary is mostly unbearable. It's to the point sometimes where it's so bad, he takes away from what's going in the ring. I understand that he was a commentator for other Dallas sports, which makes him seem credible in the eyes of the fans in that area, but that's where you have to draw the line. He has a Bob Caudle feel to him, but unlike Caudle, most of Mercer's folksy commentary is instead either just nonsense or worded incorrectly. It's like his brain is completely confused and never knows which words to use when he speaks. He very rarely calls moves correctly. I'm sure he's a nice man and I'm not insulting his character, but he comes across as a real odd ball. So I'm wondering, what is the general consensus of Bill Mercer on PWO? Where would you rank him among other PBP commentators?

You know it's strange that he doesn't wear gloves.

And that's 3 STARS for the main event, Chad. Not TWO! hahaha. Great review guys, as always.
