Sort of a repeat of the Nitro segment, with the most compelling figure in wrestling in 1997 once again being a crashing bore and Flair rescuing the segment as only Flair can. I mentioned that 1998 audiences were all about catchphrases instead of promos and that's all Bret is really offering.

[1998-01-08-WCW-Thunder] Ultimo Dragon vs Juventud Guerrera
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
Guess you had to have a title change of some sort on the debut show. The Cruiserweight belt has bounced around quite a bit since Havoc. -
Larry's not nearly as over here as he is with Nitro crowds, for whatever reason. Zbyszko's learned, long-winded promos aren't really a fit for what 1998 wrestling audiences are looking for, which is cheap pops and catchphrases. That's to the audience's detriment, not Larry's, but facts is facts. He gets in a number of good lines here--Scott Hall could be World Champion, but instead he's got a first-class seat on the ship of fools headed straight for Larryland.
-
This is the promo we probably should have gotten anywhere from 6-12 months ago. It's a good one--I just don't think it's going to lead to anything.

A split in the NWO was due by this point, but yes, they're hedging their bets too much. Hogan's creative control was always going to be an issue no matter what, but in an ideal world he easily could have been occupied by a MegaPowers vs. Outsiders feud for a good six months, while we get the theoretical ultimate dream rivalry between Sting and Bret, co-headlining shows.
-
After literal years of badgering from the higher-ups, and obfuscation and delays from Bischoff & co., TBS finally has their live wrestling show. With such a promising and daring premise of having a "brand split" now out the window, WCW goes into this with pretty much no plan whatsoever.

[1998-01-06-FMW-New Year Generation] Masato Tanaka vs Mr Gannosuke
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
Really fun match--I always appreciate any match that manages to go from garbage brawling to back-and-forth technical (-ish) wrestling and make it make sense. Usually matches logically go the other way around. Gannosuke destroys Tanaka's arm and you get the sense that he did just enough to nullify some of the damage of Tanaka's rolling elbows at the end. Tanaka is one of the masters of the last-second kickout and he has some doozies here, but Gannosuke counters one last rolling elbow with the awesome Gannosuke Clutch to steal the win and whatever title this was for. Really good match with a rewind-and-watch-again-worthy finish.- 18 replies

I don't remember where Parv had Dory ranked, so I can't say for sure that he's the high vote. But hey, I've got an avatar now for the first time ever. Much like the Elvis stamp I went with the younger fresher version of Clive.
-
Whoo-hoo! An avatar (to come later) for me!
-
Only my second fallen soldier, as Dos Caras drops.
-
I lied--I do have one guy gone, in Steve Veidor. No high votes though, and I'm not sure I'll get any until #1.

Gentleman Jim Holliday mostly managed in Florida where he acted as a frontman for J.J. Dillon. Presumably that's where the Gang photo comes from. He also gets on-air credit for Ray Candy and Leroy Brown dumping their "slave names" and becoming the Zambuie Express. He briefly turned up in Knoxville when Flair & Mulligan owned the promotion, and in World Class in '87. Brother of longtime Georgia jobber Mike Fever. I know I have some people who won't finish in the top 100 but I'm still waiting for somebody of mine to show up as well, and I may be waiting as long as Parv and Grimmas.

Heenan literally worked a full-time house show schedule in the AWA, wrestling on almost every show he appeared on in addition to managing at least one other match.

As ever I have no idea who's who between Masashi Aoyagi and Mitsuya Nagai.

I liked Jarrett-Christopher better. *ducks and runs*

[1992-09-14-WWF-Primetime Wrestling] Interview: Bret Hart
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in September 1992
Bret saved a jobber from a Shango attack a week or two before SummerSlam Then Shango came out while Bret was wrestling a squash later that hour and did his little voodoo ceremony in the aisle.- 16 replies

[1998-01-05-WWF-Raw] Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
We're in the era of the Main Event Interview now. Shawn is so much more bearable without HHH and Chyna, as much as Chyna amuses me. He does a good job of setting himself up here for a fall, for once. -
[1998-01-05-WWF-Raw] Mike Tyson announcement and feature / Don King promo
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
I agree with flyonthewall--at the time, this seemed pretty desperate and Tyson was perceived as being past his prime. It seemed like less of a coup than WCW landing Dennis Rodman--of course, that wouldn't actually be the case and one of Tyson's appeals is the idea that he was capable of doing absolutely anything. Don King hypes up Tyson's potential appearance. What a meeting of minds that must have been. Of course, these negotiations would end up playing a pivotal role in the Tyson/King split, as it was Vince who discovered discrepancies in Tyson's books that led to the discovery that King was cheating Tyson out of money. -
The Outlaws actually win a match clean. Their post-match beatdown of the Headbangers is quickly interrupted.

Austin's going to raise hell and do unto others before they do unto him, heading into the Royal Rumble.

I'm still kind of bored by Bret, against all odds, but Flair was treeeemendous here. He knew when to kiss up to the crowd, he knew when to play up the Nature Boy shtick, and he knew when to get serious. And he also gets off a ton of killer lines. This is essentially a broomstick performance as an interview, which pains me to say considering I thought Bret was the best man on the mic in wrestling in '97.

Short TV match but they make the most of their time. Babyface Jericho has spent 4 years now coming off as an insincere ninny of Bischoff-ian proportions, but now it's actually starting to work for him with the disingenuous promo he cuts before the match. He hasn't found his voice quite yet but he's starting to get there. Jericho wrestles an almost John Tatum-esque match here, handshaking constantly before getting frustrated and switching to cheap heel tactics, but DDP drops him with a Diamond Cutter out of nowhere for the win. Jericho throws another tantrum after the match.

[1998-01-04-NJPW-Final Power Hall in Tokyo Dome] Naoya Ogawa vs Don Frye
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
Just the finish, though the action we get is decent. Frye's circa-1978 Major League Baseball relief pitcher look isn't all that flattering, but he gets in two nut shots in Ogawa, which aren't sold or put over that well on top of the weak execution, and chokes him out for an upset victory, thus officially avenging his runner-up finish to Ogawa in my '97 Rookie of the Year ballot.- 9 replies
