  1. I wonder who was responsible for this, because we damn sure know that Russo wasn't.
  2. Test coming out to his entrance music in the middle of the authentic-looking ceremony and organ music is still funny. Stephanie's smile was creepy even back in '99. Interesting idea not to have the interruption come right at the "speak now or forever hold your peace" line, even though the crowd is clearly expecting it. Vince had earlier decreed that interruption by any non-family member would result in a firing, but HHH reveals how he nicely gets around that rule. HHH amusingly takes Stephanie to the very same chapel where Col. Robert Parker attempted to marry Sister Sherri. The rest has all been recapped, but yes, this is a "Where were you when...?" moment. HHH plays the cocky-asshole-who's-also-a-little-nervous-to-get-this-over-with role perfectly. The drink server is revealed as the cameraman and the guy who worked to get Stephanie in this position. Such a good payoff that the crowd pops in spite of themselves.
  3. Stephanie welches on a truth-or-dare and gets saved by a toast. Mae flirts with the server and treats him much better than she did Corey Macklin. Carlos the Electrician shows up to do what he does, as Moolah vainly attempts to hold Mae back, but she makes off with him! Then the server comes back with "one more for the road"...insert dramatic trumpet soundbite here.
  4. This ends about the only way that it can, after Bubba attempts to play six aces in a five-card game.
  5. This is what it is but becomes fairly interminable once New Jack climbs the balcony and Balls and Axl play feng-shui with the tables trying to get everyone in position. In the end, Jack's dive doesn't even look all that death-defying.
  6. These on-location vignettes never seem to go well for New Jack in ECW. He promises to make Angel his personal ho and send him to jail where he can the property of some [slur] named LeShaun, but he gets attacked instead.
  7. Yeah, that stip doesn't make sense--shouldn't the guy who finishes in last place (or gets beaten in the first round the quickest or whatever) be the one who's tarred and feathered? I'm not sure if the tradeoff would be worth it to fight my way to the finals. Cornette is having too much fun making fun of Bolin--it's not a big crowd, but this gets over and should be good material for Cornette and OVW fans going forward.
  8. Inside Edition refers to the WWF's storylines as "carefully orchestrated"--ha. Speculation that Austin may have to become an announcer or sideline character...a sheriff, perhaps.
  9. Same with Tim and the other tim here. This was fun, as the Cibernetico formula seems almost foolproof, but that's it--it's a popcorn match. And some of the officiating even by lucha standards was terrible--that extended sequence with Tarzan Boy trying to put Bestia Salvaje away and continually failing was cringeworthy. Still, outside of that the action never stops and you're never more than about 20 seconds away from a new guy coming in to freshen the match up. Good closing sequence with a little more substance to it than the rest of the match. And Negro Casas is still incredible--he might have the best move execution of any wrestler in history.
  10. A Thanksgiving Smackdown with a table of food at ringside goes off the air the only way it possibly could--with a food fight involving DX and every mid-carder on the roster.
  11. HHH serves a restraining order to Vince forcing him to stay 50 feet away from him. Then from there we get a weird non-sequitur back into 1998 DX mode that goes absolutely nowhere. Again, it's an easygoing show, and I know that ratings were going to tank so there's no point in dropping a major angle or even a major match on us, but I feel like they could have come up with something better than this. They bring a bunch of the bums back to Thanksgiving catering where X-Pac yammers about pumpkin pie. Okay, so DX are bad people because they bring a bunch of homeless people to catering and don't let them eat. We get it, guys.
  12. Definitely seems to be an easygoing show for Thanksgiving.
  13. Love is the common bond between Stephanie McMahon and Andrew J. Martin. What could go wrong?
  14. Okay match where HHH mercifully doesn't singlehandedly beat the Acolytes as he probably would a few years later--the only advantage he ever gets is when Bradshaw accidentally lariats Faarooq. But the Acolytes aren't really that over yet.
  15. A better match than you'll expect with some of these guys really pounding the shit out of each other. A low-level indy match but with fire and hate and some pretty good fundamentals to go with the flying and the big bombs.
  16. Michaels is pretty over with this audience, I'll give him that. He arguably overshadows the match too much early on, but him Sweet Chin Music'ing Gannosuke gets over as does his arguing with him over the counts out of the ring. ("FIVE!" "NO COUNT!" ... "SIX!" Pop.) This was okay but still descended into just a rote list of finishers rather than much of a story being told or elevating intensity. H almost kills Gannosuke at the end with a pretty misaligned Stardust Press.
  17. I'm with Tim here--they did great build to the spots with the cage, but don't really sell them long-term after hitting them despite teasing how deadly the explosions would be early on...until the end, as Fuyuki goes down not because he's been rendered comatose by accumulated damage but because it's go-home time.
  18. Crowd doesn't care about this, at least until the American flag gets involved. Trying to burn the Canadian flag *may* have gotten more heat in Toronto the previous night. Bret's run-in gets a very, very tepid reaction.
  19. Curt Hennig is now a minion of TPTB. "Patrick" and "Gerald"--please--are now WCW Tag Champions since we saw them and Piper. Juventud looking like a young, hip Father Guido Sarducci is summoned for a browbeating of his own. David Flair auditions to be an avant-garde composer.
  20. Duggan cleans a remarkably clean toilet with what is apparently the TPTB's toothbrush instead of the one given to him. As far as TPTB segments go, this is one of the better ones. Piper's probably coming from a real place here considering his actual feelings about how Russo was responsible for Owen Hart's death. It's striking how noticeable but much less pronounced Russo's accent is here when he's not consciously playing it up like he does now. "Bro" has not been said once that I can recall, either.
  21. Patterson and Brisco rub it in to Triple H about having to face the Acolytes with no help from DX allowed. Vince is released and gets his belt and jacket back, but is told to stay away from the arena. JR doesn't seem to think that's going to happen.
  22. Yes, Foley absolutely wanted to turn heel on Rock at some point, but it took too long for Rock's character to budge (he had to grow to like him first before there could be a turn) and Vince didn't have faith in Foley physically to pull it off. Anyway, this is a really fun and energetic match that shows what a megastar Rock was becoming--it's not like BBM and Albert had all that much heat even with the Big Show father angle and the semi-desperate pinning of Rock the previous week, but this crowd is treating them as main eventers simply because of who their opponent is.
  23. Mae Young's shower gifts to Stephanie include a leather skirt, leather bra, and handcuffs. And a cat o'-nine-tails, which finally is enough to get Linda's disapproval. Mae is excited about the upcoming bachelorette party in Vegas from Linda and trashes the cake and everyone else within sight. Lawler accuses Moolah of kicking her into the cake in a funny moment. Mae is gloriously shameless.
  24. I continue against my better judgment to enjoy Rock not knowing who any of the WWF mid-card are. "Who are you? You work for the building or something?" We get some development as we found out that someone else threw Foley's book away, not Rock.
  25. This angle is much better when seen that if it were described, which would sound hokey. But this looks really good and chaotic and Vince seems like he's completely legitimately unhinged, with DX showing the right amount of ass as cowardly opportunists, not escaping from the locker room until Vince is in cuffs.
