"YOU SEE, MY FATHER TOLD ME ONE TIME--THAT SUFFERING BUILDS CHARACTER." Sid's father, ladies and gentlemen. This is also the infamous-at-the-time "YOU CAN'T MESS WITH THIS MIND'S MAN...THIS MAN'S MIND, EXCUSE ME" promo that replaced "We're live buddy" in the pecking order of Sid promo screw-ups, only for it to be replaced itself later in the year. Sid is bad, Savage is worse, and Nash is unbearable. His indifferent too-cool-for-school act is semi-tolerable as a cool heel, but it's impossible to swallow when he's a babyface. If he doesn't care or act concerned about anything that's going on, why should the viewer? These segments are making the makeup and drag angles look like 1983 Mid-South. There are like 37 different points in 1999 where it appears that WCW is dead in the water but these last 2 weeks seem like another bullet point. The Georgia Dome is very ominously blacked out and this company seems to have deteriorated badly from even the worst point in 1998.

Maybe this is one of those Pancrase-style "drag it out a little bit" shoot fights that are worked for length? I dunno. It didn't look like worked shootstyle at all but there are openings when it looks like Ogawa could have ended the match and almost consciously chose not to. In any case, from a perception standpoint he solidifies his reputation as a genuine badass in Japan.

On the previous tour Takayama had scored a pin over Akira Taue, to give Team No Fear a shocking upset win over the Holy Demon Army. Their roll continues here as they just brutalize Kobashi--the out-of-the-box-for-AJPW booking continues. First we get a Choshu-esque upset for Takayama, and now we get a 9-minute sportz-entertainment-styled match with the oddball but successful decision to have Kobashi work FIP. He has an out, with his nose guard, but comes off as overmatched. Particularly since No Fear aren't concerning themselves with conforming to the usual sporting AJPW style. Shiga is put into the unlikely role of team savior and that doesn't end well. Fun match precisely because it's more of an NJPW-style tag than AJPW.

Good stuff--maybe not preferable to 1-on-1 matches between these guys, but a good fun 3-way with good execution all around that doesn't overstay its welcome.

Knowing now what Nitro was offering for its main event...this monster rating gets more and more explainable. The match is perfectly fine--more heated and quicker-paced than SummerSlam '98, in fact. Isn't it nice to get an actual feelgood moment on wrestling TV once in awhile?

GTV is now starting to actually advance storylines. At KOTR it revealed that Shane was faking an injury in an attempt to get Steve Blackman swapped into the main event, now we see indications that Test and Stephanie might be more than just friends.

This might be the most insecure booking in the history of wrestling. Torrie giddily skipping along now that she's Nash's property for 72 hours is probably the worst part.

Everyone has said it, and I said it in the last post, but...Kevin Nash vs. David Flair. Your main event. WCW really has thrown in the towel. We don't know if David actually accepts this challenge but everyone just assumes that he will.

Flair cuts a promo on Michael Jordan and we get another good performance out of the United Center executive guy, who we last saw during the Bischoff feud. Pity this is wasted on an apparent main event between David Flair and Kevin Nash.

The video package is a gallant effort at making sense out of this whole convoluted mess. Yeah, I think this was supposed to be the "fired" Boss Man raising the briefcase, but we were left to fill in our own blanks on that one. The McMahons win and it seems like we've hit another reset button on this feud, though Austin obviously couldn't stay as CEO for long.

Horrific, ghastly violence in every frame. Deathmatch wrestling in its purest form. The non-captains are all fairly anonymous but that's okay, since they all bleed and die for our pleasure. I don't know if I can really call this a MOTYC but it was never boring and lasted just as long as it needed to.

Ohara and Goto are getting so thoroughly destroyed that you just *know* this is setting up the upset. This was almost so unpredictable it became predictable, though that's partially selection bias because why else would the finish of this be on the set? Weak-sauce finish but it's not like I like the champs, either. Crowd goes nuts for it.

Yeah, I know Scott Teal and Beau aren't going to be sending Christmas cards to each other anytime soon, but overall I don't really care about that other than as a curiosity. I honestly didn't know that was spit--I thought it was a water bottle. This despite the fact that I think Beau mentioned actively having chaw at some point.

Your completely non-wrestling digression of the day, for Bix: what constitutes a "country" or even the name of a country isn't really as cut-and-dried as you might think. Is South Ossetia a country or not? Is Niue an independent country or not? Is the country in Southeast Asia that's run by a totalitarian military junta called Myanmar or Burma? It all sort of depends on what most other countries recognize as such, and it's not always unanimous. As for less controversial countries like Germany...the name "Germany" pre-dates the modern-day country by hundreds of years. First Germania was how Romans referred to a region of various aligned but independent kingdoms (Bavaria, Saxony, etc.) then to those various kingdoms aligned under the Holy Roman Empire. The modern-day country didn't solidify until 1871--by then, no matter what they called themselves, "Germany" was long established in English-speaking countries and elsewhere. That's not even getting into non-Roman/Germanic languages where a literal translation of a country name (China) isn't really possible. Basically: languages tend to last longer than countries. Oh, uh, pro wrestling only. wrestlingdata confirms it was Hara as "???" beating Karl Von Steiger.

In any case, besides Dynamite working the majority of the match, the other reason I don't really buy that the 6-man was a late audible is because by that point, seeing Davis have to get in the ring was a greater selling point than a title match would have been. As for the thing with the IC title change...I wonder if that was a happy coincidence or it was a case of "rainy day booking." We know how far in advance things were planned and it'd be odd for one ref to do double-duty for no particular reason when the Mr. X role could have been filled by anybody. I don't know if it's too much of a stretch to make sure the road agent assigns Davis to that particular match.
-
And yet Dynamite had more ring time, playing Face in Peril, in that match than either Santana or DBS.

I'm new to this but I say keep it up. I only listened to about 30 or 40 WTBBP episodes that pre-dated the WWE Network, so footage isn't a pre-requisite. On Between the Sheets they sometimes fall into a trap of assuming we the listener can see the clip that they're playing, so if you just minimize the "Look at [x]" without explaining it stuff, I'm fine whether the card is online or not.

Dave said that if Vince was that against scripted promos, he would have axed it completely instead of this somewhat half-assed measure they're going with.
