There was a lot of good here. Arn was the star of this segment and his enforcer image was the focal point. He is #1 protector of Flair's World Title and seems to be chief negotiator for business deals as well. It almost makes Arn the Godfather of the 4 Horsemen. Sullivan almost looked like he was going to deck Arn for saying the DoD weren't winners in their feud, that is before Arn says there are no winners only survivors. With Benoit I have taken the approach of liking his in ring work, but realizing the man off screen became a wreck that no one should imitate. Honestly I kinda view Ric Flair the same way, though I realize what Benoit did maybe the worst thing a pro wrestler has ever done to his personal life. Flair wined and dined his way out of all that money he earned and is not to the point where many do not want to work with him, and it appears many wives didn't want to as well.

[1996-01-15-WWF-Raw] Razor Ramon and Goldust
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Yes, more sunny=more awesome. There were some vicious shots in this brawl, and the funny sight of Goldust sliding around on the ice trying to get away from Razor.- 13 replies

[1996-01-15-WWF-Raw] Billionaire Ted
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
I am jumping on the cruel bandwagon. This skit in particular seems to be where the whole idea derails. The comments about the three (Hulkster, Macho, and Gene) just go overboard. It is very amusing that WCW does the exact thing that this skit is claiming would never happen. WCW buys two big stars from the New Generation and it along with a fresh idea completely revolutionizes WCW almost putting WWF out of business.- 15 replies

I remember somewhere along the line they really get deep with real shoot comments. Don't remember if it is this feud or even during this calendar year (guess we shall see). Doug did a good job keeping pace well enough with Lawler. Gilbert kept throwing accusations at Lawler, then Lawler would take it and ramble on in an explanation. I guess in that role it keeps Gilbert from being walked on by Lawler. I do like how past events are always brought back up in Memphis. I wish WWE or now even TNA would gain some more mileage out of past angles. These three brought out like four or five angles from the past and incorporated it into why they hate each other. Lot of fun to watch, really enjoying the USWA stuff. Was this a hot period from them or had the USWA been solid throughout the 90s?

[1996-01-13-USWA-TV] Jerry Lawler vs Tommy Rich
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
OK little match, but people these days would be screaming at a promotion having a title change in a little over 5 or 6 minutes. -
I need a Lucha tudor. I do not seem to understand the style very well, and it seems to take the enjoyment out of 95% of Lucha I am exposed to.

I seem to have missed out on the glass part of the match. This was enjoyable enough but the post match is most memorable to me. I wish I knew exactly what Hayabusa was saying but I took it as he let the fans down by taking the losing fall, but plans to take revenge and throw the FMW team on his back and carry them to a win in the fued with WING. I do hope we get to see more as there are good ways to build off of this match, and this moment. One disc down, twenty-nine to go. Loving this idea and set. Thanks a lot guys.

[1996-01-10-FMW] Aja Kong vs Combat Toyoda
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
I prefer seeing Aja killing some size 0 chick, but the irresistible force vs immovable object portion of the match was very cool. Kong's backfist is a nice finisher. It is believable as I can see even some men getting knocked out for four or five good seconds from it. I know this subject has been mentioned in another match down the line (looked ahead while waiting for my set) but I do not like when they hug each other and walk back to the ring. I understand it is an easy way to quickly get back to the ring while calling your spots, but I would prefer them to stay closer to the ring if they can't beat each other up and back. Maybe a little too critical but something that I have grown to dislike about modern brawling.- 14 replies

In the megapowers wasn't Savage normally the FIP? I thought Hogan taking a spinebuster looked kinda odd. That isn't a move I have ever seen him take before. I remember Bischoff saying something along the lines of the Billionaire Ted skits motivating the WCW crew to work harder at beating the WWF. These four had a fantastic match, and a nice gem that has been mostly forgotten about over time.

[1996-01-08-WWF-Raw] Billionaire Ted
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
I agree that I can see these slowly slipping down a nasty road. I do think it is funny that WWF mentions the steroid policy. I have no idea why they planned these out for three full months. Also interesting that Ric Flair, Sting, or Luger never have a negative thing thrown their way. -
[1996-01-08-WWF-Raw] Shawn Michaels Press Conference
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Was Mean Gene's mention of Vader the first time he had been mentioned in the WWF? I still haven't seen the mean spiritedness in the Billionaire Ted stuff yet. Mean Gene would shill that 900-number all the time on any WCW programming. I never called it, though I still remember the number 1-900-909-9900, I wonder if anything new or shocking was ever revealed on it? -
[1996-01-06-USWA-TV] Tommy Rich & Doug Gilbert vs PG-13
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Match was a good tv match. I didn't know PG-13 was billed from the hood. I guess that makes this a Hood vs Trailer Park tag team feud?- 10 replies

Wrestling is simple, and the simplest stuff like not being strong enough to hold someone is really good. I have never heard that explanation for hitting the wrong person before. I need to check out more USWA as this is fantastic stuff.

[1996-01-05-ECW-House Party] Public Enemy vs The Gangstas
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
The safety comes from the weapons used. They were doing the old fashioned digging into your opponents forehead bit which is violent and safe. Baked goods were flying, which will never get anyone hurt. The crowd loves this stuff. Wrestling companies never mentioned each other, which even though New Jack's comments made no sense they come off as being cool and edgy. I wished they would have shown the ring collapsing indecent in Florida during the highlight package. -
[1996-01-05-ECW-House Party] Sabu vs Stevie Richards
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
ECW's business model was to please the live crowds moreso than those at home. WWF and WCW had national TV shows to build from and PPV's to build to. The crowd loved this, and had more respect for the Studdly one at the end than they did in the beginning. Mission accomplished. Is the fan who looks like a member of the Ramons in the bottom left hand corner of the main camera anyone important? I remember seeing him at a lot of shows including all the big PPV's through the late 90s.- 16 replies

[1996-01-05-ECW-House Party] Raven, Beulah and Tommy Dreamer
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Raven was the essence of cool for me in middle school. As much as I knew about 94/95 ECW (through my Inside Wrestling subscription) I never got to see any ECW until 1997's barely legal. Raven had the look of everything I thought was cool. Once I finally saw some of his work he sounded cool. I give ECW a pass workrate-wise as it never can hold a candle to NJPW, AJPW, WWF or even WCW. It isn't polished but the whole company is likable. It is still unique even if it has been a bit overexposed via WWE. ECW isn't meant to be pretty. It is mean, nasty gitty and grimy, much like the fans that supported it at the time. Tommy's attack was filled with emotion and the stop sign is a classic moment in itself too. Was this sign a plant?- 19 replies

This crowd was molten hot. Hottest crowd I have ever heard in Japan. Makes me was to see Takada/Hashimoto.

[1996-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 1996] Vader vs Antonio Inoki
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
This is fun to watch. This was the first time seeing this, and that includes the german spot. Inoki's sell of the suplex is what makes it for me. He looks dead, mouth gaping not moving a single bone in his body. Vader the bully is always an easy story to tell and he does it well. The shots of the crowd throughout the match interest me as I am not used to a Japanese crowd so energetic. The joy on their faces as they root Inoki on is quite a sight.- 24 replies

Very enjoyable. Yamazaki's kicks to the arm when Hashimoto backed away were a nice touch sending a message that he had educated feet as well (yes I used that line). Sometimes the simplest matches are the most enjoyable. Heck of a brainbuster to finish things out.

I would agree that it is simply ok. I still remain a novice at Japanese wrestling even after all these years of dabbling in it so all of the 96 stuff is new to me. The powerbombs at the end seemed a bit of an overkill for me. Some variety as well as the other stuff mentioned above would have made it more enjoyable. Nothing offensive at least.

[1996-01-01-WCW-Nitro] Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
I disagree with Kronus to a point. When a man is happy at work, his production is very good. Flair's production started going south when he wasn't happy and was not the #1 guy. He had fantastic matches in 94 pre-hogan. He gives a good effort here however. Hogan's sold a Ric Flair suplex like King Kong Bundy gave him a big splash from the top rope. Who convulses after a suplex from Flair? I do not like the booking at the end with the Horsemen begging off from a stool welding Hogan. Even with the title Flair is not #1. Hogan's cage match goes on after the Flair/Savage World Title cage match at SuperBrawl in February. I wish the DoD would have jumped Hogan and ripped him a new one.- 15 replies

[1996-01-01-WWF-Raw] Billionaire Ted
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Agreed that it isn't funny, but this first skit doesn't appear to be as mean spirited as some have expressed looking back. I was 12 or so when these first came out so though I remember them I did not take the time to analyze them. Truth be told I always found them boring and worthless. This simply goes about explaining the differences between the WWF and WCW. Although the New Generation had been fueled by Diesel power for awhile, I see this as a big step in turning towards a new generation of fan. The WWF had a long way to go to get where that New Generation of fan was at, which they reached in the Attitude Era. I am curious to see if these skits turn real nasty as time goes by.- 18 replies

Just got the set, and very ecstatic to start. Liked some parts of this. Favorite joke was the State Penn joke that the King fumbled...woops. Good action throughout the match, with the right team winning a throwaway match that aired against at least two bowl games. The fact that the numbers on the jersey meant something to every one (or their gimmick) is a nice touch showing they put some thought into the match. The puns started wearing on me when Sid/Kid come down the aisle. Vince has some insane stuff like saying someone jumped off a goal post then hits an upright. Either its an insanely long kick or a kick into a MAJOR headwind. This gimmick match has Vince's handwriting all over it.

Loss I do agree with your assessment. Destroyer makes matches fun for me as there is always something fun and interesting to watch. I would say he did great work as I wasn't bored out of my mind and like I said before I like chess matches, even subpar chess matches.
