Get it here.

The Superpodcast is back for another exciting week of action. Topics this week include:

  • Part Two of our talk with AWA producer Polish Joe Ciupik, discussing Wally Karbo, an infamous Midnight Rockers promo incident, his relationship with Verne Gagne, Superclash III, the Team Challenge Series, Eric Bischoff, the story of the AWA’s talks with WGN & Hulk Hogan and much more!
  • A fun talk with Kurt Brown about Los Angeles wrestling in the early 1980’s. We hear stories about The Monster, Ox Baker & Enforcer Luciano, Gordman & Goliath, a locker room brawl between the Guerreros and Timothy Flowers and, of course, a Dr. Mike Lano story. Kurt also joins us earlier in the show to discuss the ugliness of Jerry Brown.
  • For the Dennis Of The Week we are joined by former newsletter writer and tape trader Brian Tramel.
  • The return of our popular “What if” segment with: What If Hulk Hogan hadn’t left the AWA?

Also, Bruce Hart in our Homophobia Of The Week, more on Wild Bull Curry, The Top Ten, listener fantasy booking, 6:05 signs at shows and much more!

Book of the Week:

Time Stamps:

  • Dennis Of The Week (1:44:23)
  • Kurt Brown (2:00:15)
  • What If? (2:38:23)
  • “Polish” Joe Ciupik part 2 (3:06:17)

+45 minutes in I thought to myself "Why am I even listening to this?" . Maybe spread out these things a bit more. Or maybe just some hints of random Bix knowledge would make those longer Brian Last segments not seem to be a potentially repetitive waste of time. That thought certainly won't make it any easier when I will listen to the top 10 the next time.

I've taken to skipping the Top 10 at the start of the show. It's pretty much the same every week; Brian does his Sue the Shooter voice, annoying Yomamba sound bites, Brian does his Black Scorpion impression, some unfunny tweets from Denim Fritz, Orgasmic Larry Nelson sound bites etc. It also doesn't help that this is dragged out for a good hour! If it was a quick run down or maybe even just in depth once a month I wouldn't mind it so much, but every week is just overkill for me. I appreciate I'm in the minority from the feedback that gets read out and people who send in their fantasy booking for the Top 10, but it's not what I listen to 6:05 for, which is the old wrestling talk and the fascinating and unique interviews and guests that they have. When the show runs for four hours each week too I don't feel bad skipping all this and joining it an hour in.

  • 4 weeks later...

Regarding the WGN/AWA talk:

Maybe this is a whole different situation but the WON in Spring of 87 says:
Super Clash 2 in San Fran drew 2800 fans about half of what was expected. In the previous months Salt Lake City drew 6500 and San Fran drew a 9000 house for a battle royal. They even drew 4500 in St Paul whole going head to head with Hogan and the WWF. This new found revival led to talks of starting an office on the West Coast which Wahoo and Ray Stevens would book. Verne and Greg would handle the Midwest. The Tribune Media group, WGN and Chicago Cubs were being rumored to be investing in the AWA and talk of lower card guys getting 60K downsides began flying around. By the beginning of summer all the plans came apart.

Don't feel bad about the long podcast because it gets me through my work day, It really makes me want to spend more time discovering old footage. 95 % of the wrestling I do watch is via WWE network but Im thinking about ditching it for atleast a month and trying NWA Classics because I want to watch Johnny Valentine and other guys you bring up on this show
