About the Candido section of today's podcast; I'm going to go the other way and say I think Candido going to ECW, while giving us better matches than he would have if he had stayed with WWE as a trainer, was probably ultimately a bad career move. It seems like a lot of the issues Candido had were only intensified working in the ECW party atmosphere. If he had gotten that All Japan job discussed, it might have been one thing, but I think working only ECW was probably a long term bad decision.

On the other hand, if he stays on as a trainer and winds up in Memphis or eventually OVW, I think he winds up working in either of those places as a wrestler, as a player-coach type of deal. He probably has just as good a run in those places as he did in ECW. And I think his talent would have been undeniable enough that he would have gotten another shot at a real WWF run in 1997 or 1998, especially as the Monday Night Wars heated up. And on top of all of that, I think he would have been a pretty damn good trainer. So while I totally understand why Candido thought leaving to keep wrestling was a good idea, especially as young as he was, I think there's an alternate universe where he gets a second chance at a WWF run in the late 90's and possibly has fewer issues with addiction.

I really enjoyed the talk on Kevin Randleman, and mark me down as someone who thought the Bas Rutten fight was an absolute robbery.

Interesting you mentioned the Ultimate New Year's Eve specials as it was the 1997 one that got me heavily into MMA. I had bought a VHS copy of UFC III and it didn't really do much for me (I later become aware of the historical nature of the event, but as an actual show it's not good), but then when placing an order with a trader decided to pick that up on a whim. This was more like it. Patrick Smith's brutal knock out on Scott Morris, Tank killing John Matua, Gary Goodridge's elbows of hell on Paul Herrara, the awesome Don Frye vs Amaury Bitteti fight, Brian Johnson, the rise of Mark Coleman, Vitor Belfort looking like the most frightening man on the planet, Mark Kerr, early Randy and Tito and the classic Maurice Smith vs Mark Coleman fight. I was hooked from that point onwards.

I didn't buy any of these things, but a couple notes on some Amazon purchases:

-Cattle Decapitation is a grindcore band who's way more gimmick than raging songs. Funny name, and I saw them in high school and they wore masks made of beef jerky.

-Chopping Mall is a pretty legendary low budget vhs horror movie where robotic security guards come to life and terrorize a group of kids in a mall overnight. Way better in concept than execution, but there's one decent beheading.

--Blood Diner is a pretty sleazy late 80s zombie-type movie. Worth checking out.
