NWA Lutte Internationale TV

Taped at CHLT-TV Studios, Sherbrooke, QC

December 22nd, 1984

dieu.jpg220px-Nwalogobw.jpg

(After the opening credits, we go to the broadcast booth where Guy Hauray & Édouard Carpentier are waiting to start the show.)

Guy Hauray: Hello, wrestling fans, and welcome to NWA Lutte Internationale TV. It’s the final stretch before Starrcade and it’s gonna be an exciting show this week as we have an interpromotional tilt featured in our main event as the Moondogs from Mid-Atlantic will square off against the Wild Samoans in what should be one of the craziest brawls we’ll ever witness in our studio.

Édouard Carpentier: It should be something to see but also this week, it’s with great pleasure that we will welcome to our broadcast booth the man who successfully defended his NWA International Heavyweight Championship in a Match of the Year candidate against Greg Valentine, and also one half of the NWA International Tag Team Champions, the man himself, Rick Martel!

(Rick Martel walks out to the stage in street clothes with his two championship belts and shake hands with Guy Hauray & Édouard Carpentier)

Guy Hauray: Welcome to the show, Rick!

Rick Martel: Thank you, guys. It’s gonna be a real treat to join you this week and I must say that it’s gonna be a little nerve-wrecking since I’m not used to do this but any time I can save myself a beating, I’ll take it!

Guy Hauray: Of course, we will talk about Starrcade and we’ll also feature some Mid-Atlantic action a little bit later on but let’s go to the ring with our first match of the show!

Match #1

“Pretty Boy” Doug Somers (w/Sherri Martel) vs Randy Rose (w/Jim Cornette)

The commentary team & Rick Martel talk about how ironic it is to see that Sherri Martel & Jim Cornette are now on two opposite sides while 2 weeks ago on that same show, they were in the same corner for a tag match. The Midnight Express is confirmed to be a part of the battle royal for Lutte Internationale during the match. A pretty even match all in all that was equally entertaining with the verbal jousting outside between Sherri Martel & Jim Cornette. The end of the match came as Doug Somers missed a cross body block and this allowed Randy Rose to hit his Diving Fist Drop to capture the win.

Winner: Randy Rose

******COMMERCIAL BREAK******

Match #2

Gilles “The Fish” Poisson vs Justice Dubois

The commentary team & Rick Martel also announces while calling the match that both Gilles Poisson and Justice Dubois will be part of the 2-ring battle royal at Starrcade. It’s also announced that Martel will be teaming up with Dubois in a tag team match vs Richard Charland & NWA International TV Champion Mad Dog Lefebvre in a non-title match tomorrow night in Chatham, ON. Martel notices that he’s seeing a more aggressive side of Justice Dubois. He believes he sometimes has a tendency to go too far but in a situation where his co-champion Gino Brito will be booked in another match, and against a team like Charland & Lefebvre, he’s glad he’ll get a teammate that can get the job done. And indeed, Dubois shows some aggressiveness against Poisson and even relies on questionable tactics. Eventually, Dubois finishes Poisson with the heart punch and secures the victory.

Winner: Justice Dubois

*****COMMERCIAL BREAK + PROMO AD FOR STARRCADE*******

After the break, the commentary team is now showcasing some Mid-Atlantic talents. First, since the Moondogs will be in action in the main event, they show their full match vs Italian Stallion & Gary Royal from the December 6th edition of World Championship Wrestling. Then, we see Mr. Wrestling II in action against Jim Powers from World Wide Wrestling the same week. It’s then announced than next week, to close 1984, Mr. Wrestling II will be in action on Lutte Internationale TV against Raymond Rougeau in a Street Fight. Mr. Wrestling II will also be appearing on December 28 (Port Credit, ON), December 29 (Morrisburg, ON) and December 31 (Centre Paul-Sauvé) for the final events of the year.

********COMMERCIAL BREAK**********

MAIN EVENT

Match #3

The Moondogs (NWA Mid-Atlantic, w/Sir Oliver Humperdink) vs The Wild Samoans

As expected, the people in attendance are seeing one helluva brawl between those two teams as technical wrestling and science are far from being the name of the game. Rick Martel even says that this match feels like it’s bringing back the primal instincts of Afa & Sika as the Moondogs are giving the Samoans more than they had bargained for. But eventually, the Wild Samoans are able to pick up the victory with a Samoan Drop from Afa.

Winners: The Wild Samoans

After the main event, the commentary team and Rick Martel discuss tonight’s live event in Thunder Bay, ON when he’ll be defending his NWA International Heavyweight Championship against Dino Bravo and of course, they discuss Starrcade and his title match with Samu. We see that the cage that will be used to lock in Eddy “The Brain” Creatchman to keep him from interfering is now sitting next to the broadcast booth. Martel says he can’t wait to settle his score with Samu, once and for all, and without the involvement of Eddy Creatchman. Martel has barely finished his sentence that Samu runs in and jumps Martel from behind. Lo and behold, Eddy Creatchman is behind Samu and directs traffic as Samu pummels the champion into oblivion! Martel’s tag team partner, Gino Brito, comes out and tries to jump on Samu! Brito and Samu exchange some fists, allowing Martel to recoup a bit but Brito gets headbutted by Samu and Samu sends Gino Brito in the shark cage! Eddy Creatchman shows off the key to everyone in the audience as he locks Brito in the cage! The International Heavyweight Champion is now defenceless! Creatchman puts the key in his pocket and Brito can only watch helplessly as Samu continues his beatdown of Rick Martel. Samu now uses Creatchman’s cane and thrusts Martel in the throat with it! Martel goes down, gasping for air as Samu is now looking for something else to use on his Starrcade opponent! Samu spots the camera cords and drags Martel near the cameras and he starts wrapping those cords around Martel’s throat! Brito is shaking the cage frenetically as Samu continues to choke Martel with the cords! Martel is literally turning purple and thankfully, a slew of enhancement talents and officials are getting out of the locker rooms to stop the carnage as Martel has seemingly passed out! How can Martel be able to compete tonight against Dino Bravo and the following night against Mad Dog Lefebvre & Richard Charland? This week’s episode concludes as Samu is holding the NWA International Heavyweight Championship belt high in the air while Eddy “The Brain” Creatchman is already proclaiming Samu the new champion!

I agree. You do a great job of keeping us on our toes. Whether it be a special guest referee, a show after a cCanadians game or Rick Martel on the mic. Very fun. Also like how much you are getting out of tag teams like the Moondogs and the Samoans. While in history, their careers were winding down, the average fan watching them would still see two of the best teams in the world going at it. Great job and Starrcade will be a classic!

NWA Lutte Internationale

Taped at CHLT-TV Studios, Sherbrooke, QC

December 29th, 1984

dieu.jpg220px-Nwalogobw.jpg

(After the opening credits, we join Guy Hauray & Édouard Carpentier in the broadcast booth for the start of the show)

Guy Hauray: Hello, wrestling fans, welcome to this final show of 1985 of NWA Lutte Internationale TV. History was made earlier this week at Starrcade as not only did Rick Martel retain the NWA International Heavyweight Championship against Samu but the Rougeau Brothers made history as they captured the NWA World Tag Team Championship from The Fantastics. Their dream has finally come true, Eddie.

Édouard Carpentier: What a moment not only for them, but also for us at NWA Lutte Internationale. Starrcade had arguably the best card of the year and we were an integral part of it. And we’re about to enter 1985 with a lot of momentum, thanks to our partnership with Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling and the National Wrestling Alliance.

Guy Hauray: But, no rest for the weary though because this week, Rick Martel will kick us off with another title defense and in our main event, we’ll see a Street Fight between Mid-Atlantic’s Mr. Wrestling II and one half of the new NWA World Tag Team Champions, Raymond Rougeau. Plus, we will also revisit the Rougeaus historic win from Starrcade. But first, the champ is in action!

Match #1

NWA International Heavyweight Championship

Rick Martel © vs Sheik Ali (w/Eddy “The Brain” Creatchman)

The broadcast team hype the finish of the NWA International Heavyweight Championship match at Starrcade with Eddy Creatchman’s cane being used against his protégé Samu to allow Martel to win. The Brain is in no mood to have fun and is more infuriated than ever at the audience cheering on the champion. Sheik Ali has received his instructions from Eddy Creatchman and as expected, the Creatchman Family member is chomping at the bit and jumps at Martel right away. Ali is able to mount some offense early in the match but clearly, the champion is still in adrenaline mode and just the sight of Eddy Creatchman at ringside makes his blood boil. Martel does a spectacular comeback and desperate times call for desperate measures so Eddy Creatchman gets on the apron to distract Martel but the champion clocks the Brain with a right hand! Creatchman goes down on the floor and Ali charges Martel. However, Martel trips Ali by taking him down by the legs and locks in the Boston Crab! No chance whatsoever for Sheik Ali to break out of the hold due to excellent positioning and Ali is forced to tap! Another successful title defense for Rick Martel.

Winner: Rick Martel (retains the championship)

(Rick Martel leaves the ring and goes to the broadcast booth for an interview with Édouard Carpentier)

Édouard Carpentier: Rick, congratulations for another successful title defense, not only tonight but also at Starrcade against your arch rival Samu as you’ve seemingly finally settled your score. However, with a door closed, another door seemed to be open as we saw a few days prior to Starrcade, Justice Dubois – or should we call him Alexis Smirnoff – turned his back on you to join Frenchy’s Legion for a mugging of you. And then, the audacity at Starrcade, right after your victory, Smirnoff came out with a Soviet flag to taunt you. It looks like you’ve found yourself a new challenger, champ.

(Translation : You know, Mr. Carpentier, there are situations where you ask yourself why certain things happened and other times where you know it’s inevitable. I should’ve known that sooner or later, Justice Dubois would revert back to Alexis Smirnoff. Because something tells me that there’s someone behind this change of identity. Someone I once considered my brother when I started in the business. Someone who took care of me when I lost my brother. Frenchy Martin, I know you have something to do with the return of Alexis Smirnoff and this will be out in the open soon enough. I also know that you’re watching right now so I won’t beat around the bush any longer. Sunday night January 6th, at the Centre Paul-Sauvé, Frenchy, you can tell your new legionnaire Alexis Smirnoff that if he wants a shot at my title, all he had to do was ask. It’s gonna be a pleasure for me to make him eat his Soviet flag.)

(Rick Martel leaves the broadcast booth to return backstage)

Guy Hauray: You heard it, the NWA International Heavyweight Champion won’t waste any time to settle his score with Alexis Smirnoff as he wants to defend his title in 8 days against the Soviet turncoat.

Édouard Carpentier: I think that Rick has learned a lesson from his feud with Samu as this one lingered perhaps too long to everyone’s liking. I don’t think that Rick wants to repeat that mistake with Smirnoff. He is a very formidable opponent for the champion and if Rick is right and Frenchy Martin is behind Alexis Smirnoff’s return to his commie ways, this can only spell trouble for the champion. Let’s not forget that Martel also holds the NWA International Tag Team titles with Gino Brito so Smirnoff all of a sudden, becomes a dual threat to Martel because he’ll probably go after those titles as well, under the guidance of Frenchy Martin.

Guy Hauray: Can’t wait to see this. When we come back, a match with global implications as the winner of our next match will earn a spot in the IWGP Tag Festival in February!

****COMMERCIAL BREAK****

Match #2

The winner earns a spot for his team for New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Tag Festival in February

The Spoiler (representing also The Missing Link) vs Carlos Colon (representing the Caribbean Connection)

As the match starts, the broadcast team discuss the upcoming tournament in Japan to crown the first-ever IWGP Tag Team Champions. They also mention that the Wild Samoans and the Sheepherders are already entered into the tournament. Guy Hauray & Édouard Carpentier are wondering how much of a wildcard a team of The Spoiler & The Missing Link would be in this tournament while they argue that being former International Tag Team Champions, the Caribbean Connection has the advantage. This opportunity seems to mean a lot for The Spoiler since he’s going all out and we’re seeing a side of him that we had rarely seen lately, especially in NWA Lutte Internationale. And obviously, the size advantage is very helpful for The Spoiler as he’s dominant on the mat. However, the turning point of the match comes when The Spoiler attempts his trademark top rope walk but Colon somehow yanks him and he falls straddled on the top rope. Colon goes for the cover but the referee doesn’t see that The Spoiler’s foot is under the ropes! Carlos Colon gets the victory but obviously, referee Luigi Macera made a huge mistake here! The broadcast booth now discuss if maybe, the match should’ve been restarted to ensure a fair winner. Like it or not, The Caribbean Connection is headed for Japan in February!

Winner: Carlos Colon

****COMMERCIAL BREAK****

(Back from the break, we go to the broadcast booth with Guy Hauray & Édouard Carpentier)

Guy Hauray: Before we head to our main event, we will take a look back at the night that was Starrcade as we’ll show you the highlights of some important matches. First, we will take a look at the match between Bob Backlund & Ric Flair for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship with Smokin’ Joe Frazier as the special guest referee inside the cage.

NWA World Heavyweight Championship Match

One-fall with No-Time-Limit, and “Smokin’ Joe Frazier as the Special Guest Referee

Outside the cage referee: Tommy Young

Bob Backlund vs “Nature Boy” Ric Flair © (w/ James J Dillon)

The cage door is locked, and we are under way. Bob Backlund goes on the offensive very quickly, keeping the champion off balance. Backlund controls the early 10-12 minutes of action. Flair is getting frustrated and kicks Backlund low to stop his momentum. Frazier gets in Flair’s face for the low blow, but it’s a Steel Cage match, so there isn’t DQ’s. Flair goes to work on Backlund and his left leg, specifically his knee. Flair is a surgeon here when it comes to working on the leg. Backlund fight back, and uses his incredible power to keep Flair away. Flair kicks at the leg and regains the advantage. Flair continues to work the leg. Backlund fight back again, this time keeping Flair off balance again with his power, even using a power Atomic Drop, but that hurts his already injured knee. Backlund works through it, even trying for a Crossface Chicken Wing, which is effective, but Flair is able to use his momentum, drop down and send Backlund into the cage. Backlund’s knee smacks a part of the cage and he is down in pain. Flair’s shoulder is injured after the submission hold, but much like the challenger, he is working through it. Flair stomps on the leg and drops his knee against the hurt knee of the challenger. Flair slaps on the Figure-Four leglock. Backlund is in a ton of pain. Backlund sits in the hold for about two minutes, before finally being able to turn it over and reverse the hold. Flair breaks the hold and hobbles to his feet. Backlund is slow to get up, obviously hurting bad. Flair climbs up the ropes and leaps with a cross-body block, but only gets a two. Flair rolls towards the ropes again, using them to help him up. Backlund is getting up, his knee injured, but he is still on the attack. He power slams the champion, but only gets a two count. Flair is on the ropes, literally and figuratively. Backlund marches forward, Flair swings wildly, Bob ducks, and grabs a waist lock. He rushes Flair into the ropes and tries for a rolling, bridging cradle, but as he rolls through and gets Flair’s shoulders on the mat, his knee gives out and Backlund drops to the mat. Flair recovers quickly and slaps on the Figure-four leglock again. They are in the middle of the ring. Backlund is fighting it, but he won’t submit. He tries to get to the ropes, but Flair pulls him back to the middle of the ring. Backlund is fighting it, but he can’t escape. Flair pulls on the foot, really locking the submission in. Backlund is trying, but he can’t reverse it. Frazier is asking him to quit, but Backlund won’t. He’s starting to lose consciousness. Frazier is still talking to Backlund, but he’s fading. Backlund passes out, and Frazier checks on him. Frazier calls for the bell. He awards the match to Ric Flair. Bob Backlund can’t continue. The Special Guest Referee stops the match…..Ric Flair will retain the title. Flair is handed the championship as JJ celebrates from ringside. Flair holds the belt high, before he walks out of the cage. The referee’s rush the cage to check on Backlund as we close the show.

Time: 46:03

Decision: Still NWA World Champion Ric Flair (due to referee stoppage)

Guy Hauray: Now because of the damage he sustained in this match, doctors have refused to clear Bob Backlund for the weeks to come as he’s been suggested to rest and heal up but his doctors have ensured us that Backlund will be back 100% and will more than likely be cleared as early as February 1st. And now, let’s watch some highlights from the matches involving the 2 men featured in our main event this week. First, let’s go a bit earlier in the night as Mr. Wrestling II challenged Magnum TA for the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship.

NWA United States Championship Match

One-fall with a 45-minute time limit

Referee: Tommy Young

Mr. Wrestling II (w/ Paul Jones) vs Magnum TA ©

Just as the referee takes the title belt and gives it to the ringside attendant, Mr. Wrestling II and Paul Jones attack the champion. Tommy Young is trying to get Paul Jones out of there, and threatens to toss the match before it begins. But they are ignoring his instructions. Sweet Ebony Diamond appears down the aisle and slips into the ring. He gives a double clothesline to both men, and then chases Paul Jones from ringside. Tommy Young calls for the bell as both men get to their feet. II goes back on the attack, but Magnum battles back as they exchange strikes in the middle of the ring. Magnum starts to get the upper hand with the striking, so II rakes the eyes to stop Magnum. II starts to settle into the veteran role here, cutting off the younger star. He slows down the momentum of the champion and wrestles him to the mat. II uses cheap shots and cheating when he can, but with Paul Jones missing from ringside, he doesn’t have that distraction to help him here. Tommy Young is familiar with the bending of the rules, and at times is keeping II at bay, watching him closely. II still shows his experience keeping Magnum on the mat. II pounds him with his strikes to keep him down. II uses some wear down holds to keep the advantage. Magnum is a fighter and won’t give it up. He keeps battling to his feet. Eventually he makes II make a mistake, changing the momentum of the match. II misses a running elbow smash into the corner, as he stumbles out of the corner, Magnum drops him with a big time belly-to-belly suplex to get the win!

Time: 18:23

Decision: Magnum TA still the United States Champion

Guy Hauray: Mr. Wrestling II came within an eyelash of winning the title from Magnum TA but it wasn’t meant to be for him that night. What was meant to be though is what you’ll see next as the Rougeau Brothers challenged the Fantastics for the NWA World Tag Team Championship in the co-main event of the evening at Starrcade!

NWA World Tag Team Championship Match

One-fall with a 60-minute time limit.

Referee: Adrien Desbois

Raymond & Jacques Rougeau vs The Fantastics (Tommy Rogers & Bobby Fulton) ©

All four men shake hands before the match. This is two of the top tag teams in the world. The Rougeaus won a one-night tournament at the beginning of December to earn this shot here against The Fantastics. The action is a purely technical match. Both teams battle back and forth with great wrestling action. One team doesn’t really have the advantage for that long, as the pendulum goes back and forth the entire contest. Just when the challenger’s start to get the momentum, the champions cut them off and begin their attack. The Rougeaus focus on the left leg when they are in control, and the champions are looking at the left arm when they gain control. After a nice long back and forth, the champions start to sink into control for a lengthy portion, working on the left arm and shoulder of Raymond. Fulton ends up losing control after he misses a big second-rope elbow smash. Raymond tags his brother, and the brothers regain the control, working over Bobby Fulton. Even this far into the contest, both teams have been playing by the rules, and not losing their cool, but that changes just as Fulton gets a tag, but the referee doesn’t see it and won’t let it happen. Tommy Rogers argues with the referee, but Raymond now has Fulton pinned after a backbreaker. Tommy leaves the ring, and Ray only gets a two-count. This starts a pier-six brawl, as both teams are in the ring, throwing strikes at each other. The referee steps in and tries to regain control. The Fantastics nail a double dropkick to Jacques, which sends him to the apron. Referee steps in to get one of the champions out of the ring, Fulton rushes at Raymond, but gets caught with a savate kick! Raymond clutches Fulton and twists towards his corner. Jacques leaps, and they land the La Bombe Rougeau. Raymond goes for the cover...and gets the three count before Tommy Rogers can stop the pinfall! We have NEW World Tag Team Champions!

Time: 34:16

Decision: NEW NWA World Tag Team Champions, The Rougeau Brothers!

Guy Hauray: So, Eddie, it’s with some huge momentum that Raymond Rougeau heads into this week’s main event, a street fight nonetheless, to the request of Mr. Wrestling II’s manager, Paul Jones.

Édouard Carpentier: And we know that Raymond Rougeau has never backed down from a challenge and it certainly won’t be starting this week. However, if I may say so, I think that this might be a tactical mistake from Paul Jones here. Raymond Rougeau is one of the toughest men on the roster, if not the toughest man all around NWA Lutte Internationale. This type of match is right down the alley while Mr. Wrestling II is known for his scientific prowess. Perhaps that Paul Jones should’ve gone for another stipulation. But this is why we have those matches in the first place.

Guy Hauray: So without any further ado, let’s go to our main event of the week!

MAIN EVENT

Match #3

Street Fight

Raymond Rougeau vs Mr. Wrestling II (w/Paul Jones)

As expected, Raymond Rougeau gets quite the hero’s welcome as he proudly displays his NWA World Tag Team Championship belt. It’s all the opposite for Mr. Wrestling II & his manager, Paul Jones. The broadcast booth catches up the audience with Paul Jones’ nefarious ways throughout 1984 and hype Paul Jones’ army as legit threats to the Rougeaus. Oddly enough, it doesn’t start as aggressively as we would’ve thought as Mr. Wrestling demonstrates his scientific skills early and this seems to throw Raymond off his game a bit. But eventually, Raymond counters Mr. Wrestling move for move, tit for that and the momentum swings around. Outside the ring, Paul Jones senses it’s time to act so he climbs on the apron and tosses a foreign object to Mr. Wrestling. Raymond gets a hold of Paul Jones and while he decks him with a right hand, that gives Mr. Wrestling enough time to load his mask and as Raymond turns around, he headbutts Raymond! Raymond goes down hard and we can see that he has been busted open. Mr. Wrestling is now relentless and pummels Raymond with right hands and more blood is oozing from the open wound. The crowd is now definitely behind Raymond as they cheer him all the way. Mr. Wrestling continues to use his loaded mask as his prime weapon of choice in this mugging of Raymond Rougeau. Soon enough, Mr. Wrestling asks for more weapons and Paul Jones obliges. Mr. Wrestling grabs a wooden chair and breaks it on the back of Raymond! Jones slides in another chair in the ring and Mr. Wrestling places it right in the middle of the ring. It looks like he’s gonna try to piledrive Raymond on the chair! Mr. Wrestling sets up Raymond and goes for the piledriver but Raymond blocks it! And a 2nd time! And a 3rd time! Finally, Raymond musters some strength and back body drops Mr. Wrestling on the chair! Mr. Wrestling II is now in deep trouble as Raymond is gaining strength and the adrenaline is kicking in. Mr. Wrestling and Paul Jones realize that they’re now in trouble as Raymond pummels Mr. Wrestling with a series of right hands. Rougeau whips Mr. Wrestling in the ropes and hits a beautiful dropkick! Raymond is now ready to finish him off and he hits the Savate Kick! Raymond covers Mr. Wrestling....1....2....but Paul Jones pulls referee Adrien Desbois out of the ring! Raymond spots Jones arguing with the referee and this time, he steps outside the ring to confront Paul Jones but from behind....The Grapplers jump on Raymond! There’s nothing the referee can do since it’s no disqualification! It has now become a 3-on-1 mugging of Raymond Rougeau as a bloody Raymond is sent back in the ring. It doesn’t take long for little brother Jacques Rougeau to charge the ring to make the save but the Grapplers take care of him as well as Grappler #2 delivers a well placed right hand on the ear of Jacques and he stumbles down on the mat. The Grapplers neutralize Jacques as Mr. Wrestling II returns to what he had originally planned earlier in the match: he places the chair in the middle of the ring and sets up Raymond for the piledriver. This time, there’s nothing Raymond Rougeau can do: Mr. Wrestling II delivers the piledriver right on the chair and Mr. Wrestling II makes the cover for the win as referee Adrien Desbois counts 3. Everyone in Paul Jones’ Army is celebrating and Paul Jones snatches the NWA World Tag Team Championship belts from the timekeeper! He then proceeds to hand them over to The Grapplers! The broadcast team wonders if The Grapplers now stand ahead of the line for an NWA World Tag Team Championship match! Yeah, I usually try to plan the champ's angle in 2 or 3 sections of the year. Martel vs Valentine was the 1st, and it intertwined with the debut of Samu's feud. I figured Starrcade was a good option to kick off Martel's angle vs Alexis Smirnoff. That's something I'll try to apply for all of my championship angles throughout 1985.
