WCW Saturday Night

WTBS Studios - Atlanta, Georgia

2/27/88

{We cut to the set of WCW with Jim Ross and Tony Schaivone standing by…}

JR: Welcome everyone to World Championship Wrestling! Fans I am Jim Ross alongside tony Schaivone and Tony we’ve got a lot of news to go through here tonight!

TS: That’s right Jim… first and foremost… World Championship Wrestling is now its own entity and this program will be called WCW Saturday Night!

JR: So much more to go through, we’ve got some new stars joining the ranks of the WCW along with some big news as we head into the month of March. Perhaps the biggest news in the Clash of the Champions…

TS: That Clash of the Champions will be held right here on TBS on Sunday Night, March the 27th. This will be an event in which every WCW title will be on the line and Jim, you and I saw some new faces in the back… perhaps some new contenders who could become new champions.

JR: It is certainly going to be something to keep an eye on and as most of you know, next week, we will see a one on one match right here for the number one contender spot for the WCW World Championship… it is going to be Sting taking on Dr. Death Steve Williams.

TS: Williams will of course be flanked by the Varsity Club along with Kevin Sullivan. He has Rotundo and Dr. Death in tag team action right now… let’s head to the ring!

The Varsity Club (Williams & Rotundo) w/ Kevin Sullivan & Rick Steiner defeated Kevin Jones & Lenny Knight via Oklahoma Stampede!

-We then see the Varsity Club walk over and join Tony and Ross. Kevin Sullivan is on fire tonight putting over how he will do whatever it takes for Mike Rotundo to get that shot at Ric Flair and the World title. Williams is all but incoherent talking about Sting and what he’s going to do to him. We hear that Rotundo will be defending the TV Title at the Clash against Ron Simmons. They talk about how Simmons needs to see the light and join the Varsity Club. Rick Steiner is barking and hoofing around. Sullivan says that next week Williams is going to earn the shot against Flair and the newest member of the Varsity Club is going to make sure it happens!

*COMMERCIAL*

-Saturday Night is back with Tony and Ross putting over the Varsity Club while also talking about the Horsemen. That brings out Jim Cornette and the MXE who are set for tag team action.

The Midnight Express defeated Willy Roberts & Vincent Hughes with the Rocket Launcher

-We cut back to Cornette and the MXE and then Jimmy brings out Big Bubba Rogers. He puts over how Bubba single handedly killed the UWF and ran off anyone who was anyone from ever thinking they could be a champion. He says that Bubba has unfinished business with some members of the WCW and he’s looking at you Dusty Rhodes. He is talking about you Dr. Death Steve Williams. Everyone knows that Bubba is the biggest and the baddest dude on the block and it will only be a matter of time before he gets exactly what he wants!

Tommy Rich defeated Freddie Simmons via the Thesz Press!

*COMMERCIAL*

Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard w/ JJ Dillon defeat Norman Smiley & Zander Kelly via Spike Piledriver!

-The Horsemen are here and Ric Flair joins them looking only as he can look. Arn and Tully talk about all the new faces in the WCW but they haven’t seen anything that will put them in their place. JJ Dillon says that consideration for the 4th Horsemen is continuing and a list of names has been delivered to his desk. He has scouted some of the best talent in the world and will make a final decision in the coming weeks. Arn and Tully put over how they will be facing Windham and Luger at the Clash for the Tag Titles. Then we hear Ric Flair go off…

Ric Flair: Well… here we are… the deal of the decade went through and now World Championship Wrestling is alive and well and brother you are looking at the face… the franchise… the champion. Now I walked through the back and saw some of these guys who think they are coming here to get a shot at the champ… well line up boys because Ric Flair is here to take you down… one by one… you see when you step into the ring with me… you are stepping in there with the absolute best in the world. You need to be ready to go 30...45...60...90 minutes because I am going to dog you all night long! Now the way I see it… some homage and dues are needing to be paid and we’re not going anywhere until it happens!

-Tony and Ross try to figure out what they are talking about but Flair and company aren’t leaving… then we hear a roar as we see Sting, Lex Luger, and Barry Windham come out! They put over how Flair and the Horsemen may be worried about some new guys in the back but they better be worried about what is right in front of them! Luger and Windham put over the tag title match while Sting puts over the World Title match. Flair says that Dr. Death is going to have the final say but if Sting somehow makes it through… he is going to finish off whatever is left. Sting then challenges Flair to jump in the ring with him right now but that causes the Horsemen to back off…

*COMMERCIAL*

Ron Bass defeated Mark Dodger via the Gordbuster!

-Tony and Ross put over the returns of Tommy Rich and Ron Bass to WCW and how these fresh stars can cause plenty of challenge for all the title contenders. That brings out none other than Dusty Rhodes! The US Champion comes out and puts the title on the table and goes right into it! He talks about how life can change in the blink of an eye. He says that he once had partners and friends to his left and to his right but now he finds himself facing the world alone. He puts over the Clash of the Champions and how he will be putting the title on the line but he knows that it is so much more than just gold and jewels it is respect! We then see Dick Murdoch walk out and the crowd is stirring… Murdoch tells Rhodes that he isn’t alone. He says he and Dusty have been through wars and still managed to come out. They have fought next to each other and against each other but they always find a way through it. Murdoch tells Rhodes that if he’s looking for a partner he’s got one… they walk off together to the delight of the fans!

Terry Taylor defeated George Johnson via the Five Arm!

*COMMERCIAL*

Buddy Landel defeated Tim Horner via a handful of tights!

-Tony and Ross put over the returns of Terry Taylor and Buddy Landell but that brings out a very special guest… a new manager in World Championship Wrestling… none other than Jimmy Hart! Jimmy Hart comes out to a chorus of boos and he puts over how he is coming to WCW and he has got some big contracts for some big name talents. He puts over how he is going to have a member of the First Family of Wrestling next week right here on Saturday Night! Tony and Ross put it over and then pump up our big main event when we come back… the Road Warriors are here!

*COMMERCIAL*

-Tony and Ross are back putting over the Clash of the Champions. They pump up next week’s big number one contender’s match with Sting vs Dr. Death! They talk about how the Road Warriors are on the cusp of getting a chance at the tag team titles again. Right now they are in action as we cut to the ring!

The Road Warriors defeated Pat Tanaka & Paul Diamond via the Doomsday Device!

-The Road Warriors join Tony and Ross and say they are a ship without a paddle right now. They say that Paul Ellering is out of their lives and now they are going on their own and making their own path. This means pain and destruction for everyone in their way. They talk about the world tag team titles and the us tag team titles. They say that no team could unify those titles except for the Road Warriors. They are putting out the challenge… there will only be one tag team champion and they will do whatever it takes to become that team!

-Tony and Ross continue to put them over and pump up the show next week. Just as they begin to fade out… they cut to a figure in the crowd… oh my… that can’t be… is it?

-Tony and Ross put over a big night of action. They talk about how Jimmy Hart is going to be introducing a member of his first Family along with Kevin Sullivan saying there is a new member of the Varsity Club. Plus tonight we find out who will face Ric Flair when Sting takes on Dr. Death Steve Williams! They also talk about an exclusive interview with Stan Hansen that took place last week after the show went off the air! Right now we head to the ring for tag team action with two newcomers to WCW… Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty… the Rockers!

The Rockers defeated Ryan Shaw & Eric Price via Double Fist Drop!

-The Rockers come over and talk with Tony and Jim Ross.  They put over how they Rock and Roll, Strut and Stroll. They are here to show the world a new kind of wrestling…. One that is faster and more crisp than ever before! They tell all the teams that they’re coming for gold like greased lightning! Tony and Ross put them over before we cut to another match up…

Ron Bass defeated Randy Young via the Gordbuster!

*COMMERCIAL*

Brad Armstrong defeated Pat Tanaka via Swinging Neckbreaker!

-We cut back to Tony and Ross who bring back in Jimmy Hart. He says that the First Family is all about loyalty and respect. It is about putting forth the best talent in the world and when you do that, you have to start at the top with the best… he is proud to introduce… returning to WCW… none other than…

rick-rude-kiss.jpg

-Ravishing Rick Rude is back! After a year’s absence he has returned and he looks to be in tremendous shape! He and Hart embrace and Rick Rude talks about how he is here to show all the ladies just what a ravishing body looks like and he is ready to get his hands around some gold here in WCW. He makes it a point to call out Dusty Rhodes and puts over how that US title hasn’t been defended in weeks and he would love a chance to give the American Dream a Rude Awakening! He and Hart laugh it off as they cut away and we go to our next match!

Terry Taylor defeated Frankie Wilcox via the Five Arm!

*COMMERCIAL*

We cut to a very special video of Stan Hansen showing up in the studio just one week ago… he doesn’t talk to Jim Ross or Tony Schiavone… he just gets in the ring and grabs the microphone…

Stan Hansen: Listen up you pukes… I am sick and tired of everyone walking around here thinking they are somebody special! I don’t see anyone who could step in this ring with me and that goes for you Ric Flair… the World’s Champion… and especially YOU DUSTY RHODES you good for nothing fat oaf! Everyone says your the common man; well all I see is a common waste of space and that title you have maybe puts your head a little taller but brother that only gives me a better target to rip it off with the LARIAT! Rhodes… I hope you know what’s coming boy and I hope you’re ready because when I get done with you… you’re going to be flushed just like that dumb ol daddy of your was cleaning up toilets his whole life!

*COMMERCIAL*

-Tony and Ross put over the candid interview from Stan Hansen. They put over just what he brings to the ring whenever he steps inside but also the mental aspect of being able to beat anyone he wants to get whatever he desires! They turn their attention to Ron Simmons and his tv title opportunity. The All-American from Florida State is in action right now as we head to the ring!

Ron Simmons defeated Ryan Sage via the flying shoulder block!

-Simmons walks over to cut a promo but soon the Varsity Club comes out. Williams, Rotundo, Steiner, and Sullivan go in front of Simmons and Sullivan gives him one more chance to join. He talks about his football greatness and says that he could once again be great! He just needs guidance. Simmons says he doesn’t need a damn thing from Sullivan and says he will do what he wants when he wants and he is going to the Clash of Champions to take that TV Title… then out of the back we see DANNY SPIVEY return and he attacks Simmons! The Varsity Club puts the boots to Simmons until we see some babyfaces come out along with officials. Simmons is left laying by the broadcast booth… the Varsity Club has done a number on him!

*COMMERCIAL*

Dick Murdoch defeated Johnny Shaw via the Brainbuster!

-We then see Jim Cornette come out with Big Bubba and the MXE. They talk about the US tag titles and put over how they will be defending the titles at the Clash of Champions against Tim Horner and Brad Armstrong. They talk about challenging the winner of the World Tag Title match on the next available date. They also put over the issue with the Road Warriors and say that if anyone is going to be putting titles together it will be the Midnight Express. They tell the Road Warriors to stand in the back of the line and watch them win the gold and go down in history as the absolute best tag team in wrestling!

Windham & Luger defeated George Grant & Vance McMillan

-Luger and Windham then come over for a quick promo putting over their tag title match but also the match coming up with Sting and Dr. Death. They say that the Varsity Club is dangerous but they will be there if Sting needs them!

*COMMERCIAL*

-We’re back and here come the Horsemen. Flair, Arn, and Tully come out with JJ Dillon. JJ puts over the search for the 4th Horsemen. He says that he has got the list narrowed down to 3 names but won’t reveal who they are. Anderson and Tully put over the world tag team title match but also how they accept the challenge of the Midnight Express and want to put the titles on the line whenever they get a chance. They say the Road Warriors are just going to have to wait in line because business has to be dealt with before they beat them again! Ric Flair then goes on a diatribe against a number of people. Firstly, he goes after Sting and Dr. Death and says that neither man has what it takes to go 60 minutes with him and win the title. Then he cuts into Luger and Windham. He says they are formidable contenders but don’t have what it takes to beat the Horsemen. The Horsemen hold up the sign and they have got business on their mind!

*COMMERCIAL*

-Tony and Ross are back putting over the huge main event. They talk about Rick Rude being in action next week along with the Rockers, Midnight Express, Brad Armstrong, plus Terry Taylor vs Tommy Rich! They say we have stand by matches with about 15-minutes of tv title remaining. If the match continues past that, they will keep the cameras rolling… here we go!

MAIN EVENT
Sting vs Dr. Death Steve Williams w/ Kevin Sullivan
{Big time match here with limited tv time remaining. Sting and Dr. Death go through some fun strength spots with both men getting the upperhand but Williams taking control when Sullivan interferes. Williams is hammering down and working over the back of the Stinger. When Sting tries to make a comeback we see Rotundo, Steiner, and Spivey come out. They circle the ring but then the crowd pops when Luger, Simmons, and Windham run out and we’ve got a brawl. Inside the ring, Williams goes for the Oklahoma Stampede but Sting goes over his back and pushes him into the corner. Williams comes back with a clothesline but Sting ducks and Williams hits the turnbuckle before turning around and Sting is there with the STINGER SPLASH! Williams stumbles out while Sting goes up top… Williams turn around and Sting leaps for a cross body for the 1...2….3! Schiavone and Ross are going nuts on commentary while Sting is celebrating with Windham, Luger, and Simmons! Sting is going to face Flair at the Clash! We will hear more from him next week!

Very much looking forward to Sting vs Flair at the Clash. Beating Dr. Death is no small feat and he deserved every inch of this. Also, Rick Rude & Jimmy Hart are quite the pairing. Rude isn't the typical heel you're used to see with the Mouth of the South but he is his best shot at the World Heavyweight Championship as Hart's meal ticket!

3/12/88

{WCW Saturday Night opens with footage from last week. We see the big finish between Sting and Dr. Death Steve Williams. We see everyone get involved and then Sting win the shot at Ric Flair at the Clash of the Champions!}

-Tony and Ross are in the booth and it doesn’t take long for the Varsity Club; Sullivan, Steiner, Rotundo, Spivey, and Williams to come out and they don’t look happy! We hear Sullivan run down Sting, Luger, and Windham in a big way. He says that the Varsity Club follows the rules unlike those cheaters and they have the fans brainwashed into thinking they are doing good when really they are just manipulating the system! Sullivan says that next week; since WCW Saturday Night will be in Charlotte at the Coliseum...the Varsity Club challenges Sting, Luger, Windham, and Ron Simmons to an eight-man tag team match! Ross and Schiavone put it over in a big way and hope to hear from those men later on in this broadcast… right now let’s head to the ring for our opening contest!

The Rockers defeated Thomas Shaw & Nathan Wilcox via the Double Fist Drop!

-Before our commercial we see the Rockers come out and hype up their presence in WCW. They talk about all the top talent and all the top tag teams and hope to put their name in the hat of the best teams in wrestling. They look forward to challenging any and all comers and want to get their shot at the tag titles when the time comes!

*COMMERCIAL*

-Saturday Night is back and we’ve got Dusty Rhodes on the scene with the US Title and he’s got his buddy Dick Murdoch by his side. They are pumping up the clash of the champions in a big way. Rhodes says he knows he must defend the title and he is looking for a challenger. That brings out Jimmy Hart and Ravishing Rick Rude. They put over Rude’s body and then say that he is half the weight of Rhodes to which Dusty says he’s not even half the man with half the heart and Jimmy Hart has half the brain. Rude says he is going to give the American Dream a Rude Awakening and heads to the ring for the match...

Rick Rude w/ Jimmy Hart defeated Sammy Wallace via the Rude Awakening!

-Rude and Hart come back over and formally challenge Rhodes for the Clash but Dick Murdoch intervenes and says he wants a shot at Rude first. They pump up next week’s big Charlotte Saturday Night show. Rude says if he has to beat Murdoch first he will. Looks like that match will happen next week and the we could see Rude vs Rhodes at the CLASH!

{Before the commercial we see Ric Flair & JJ Dillon talking to Barry Windham. They are blocking him from moving and putting over how he has the pedigree to be a Horsemen… Windham pushes them away and walks off…}

*COMMERCIAL*

Dick Murdoch defeated Willis Reeves via the Brainbuster!

-After Murdoch’s victory we have Stan Hansen walk into the scene and he is getting a mixed reaction from the crowd. Hansen comes out to point out that if he wanted a shot against the common man Dusty Rhodes he could. He applauds Rick Rude for wanting to earn it, but when you can beat every single man in your path, you get what you want! He says that next week he is going to be in Charlotte to make his in ring debut and it is going to be something the fans will not afford to miss!

{Before the commercial we see Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard talking to Lex Luger and blocking him… we hear them say that JJ isn’t mad anymore and it is time to make amends… Luger doesn’t look pleased and pushes them way!}

*COMMERCIAL*

Tully Blanchard w/ JJ Dillon defeated The Italian Stallion

-The Horsemen are here and the crowd is stirring. First we get JJ Dillon saying that he has narrowed the list down once again and there are TWO men who are being courted as the 4th member of the Horsemen. Tony and Ross try to get some word on who it will be and challenge him on Luger and Windham and what they saw… JJ pleads the 5th and then Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson put over their tag title match with Luger and Windham and talk about how they are already focused on the wrong things. They say that next week, the Varsity Club may start something that the Horsemen will finish and we may never see one of them ride away with the Horsemen while the other goes down in defeat!

Big Bubba Rogers w/ Jim Cornette defeated Mike Ross

*COMMERCIAL*

The Midnight Express w/ Jim Cornette defeated Kenny Rose & Ron Jones via the Rocket Launcher!

-Jim Cornette comes out and he’s putting his men through the roof. He says that Big Bubba is adding his name to the list of people who are looking to get their hands on Dusty Rhodes and the US Title. He says that the Midnights have got a match with Horner and Armstrong and they plan on putting them to rest until 1990! Then he jumps in on the Rockers and says these two punks want to come out here and imitate the MXE. Cornette said they would handle these two punks just like Horner and Armstrong but with just a little more ease. That brings out Horner and Armstrong who get in the face of the MXE. Armstong says he doesn’t do his talking on the microphone but does it in the ring.

Brad Armstrong w/ Tim Horner defeated Sean Knight via Swinging Neckbreaker!

*COMMERCIAL*

-We’re back with Sting, Luger, Windham, and Rhodes. They all go through their title matches at the Clash of Champions and then formally accept the challenge to the 8-man tag next week in Charlotte! Both Luger and Windham downplay the Horsemen scenes we saw earlier and say they have each other’s back! Sting is getting a tremendous pop right now but all four men are getting some love. They pump up the card next week and the Clash from the Omni!

Wild Bill Irwin, Black Bart, & Ron Bass defeated John Quincy, Kyle Wright, & Norman Mason via the Gordbuster!

*COMMERCIAL*

-We go back to Tony and Ross who are pumping up next week’s Charlotte Saturday Night!  We’ll see Rick Rude against Dick Murdoch, Horner and Armstrong vs Bass and Black Bart, Stan Hansen in action,  The Road Warriors in action, and then the big eight-man tag… plus we will reveal the three judges for the match with Flair vs Sting… then the crowd starts to stir… wait a second…

HennigAWA2_1.jpg

-Curt Hennig is HERE! Hennig walks over to Ross and Schiavone and he puts himself over in a big way. He says that the fans may cheer him or boo him but they will respect him and so will the competition here in WCW! He has his eyes on a lot of things here but he wanted a ringside seat for this match coming up. The crowd is really stirring as we head into our main event!

MAIN EVENT
Tommy Rich vs Terry Taylor
-This is a good TV main event with about 10-minutes of time. We see both men work the crowd. Taylor has got some nice heat right now and really plays the cock of the walk well. Rich has still got a wildfire and he has the fans behind him. Hennig is drawing a lot of the aire of the fans right now. They are really clamoring to know why he’s here. We are nearing the end of tv time and we see a quick finish when Tommy Rich goes for the Thesz press but Taylor holds him and then falls backwards to have him hot shot off the ropes! Rich is in a rough way and Taylor rolls him up with a handful of tights for the 3-count!

-The final moments show Hennig looking at both men… he’s got a smirk on his face… what could this mean for Curt Hennig now showing up in WCW?

WCW Saturday Night

The Coliseum - Charlotte, North Carolina

3/19/88

-WCW Saturday night is here from the Coliseum in Charlotte for a very special (taped) edition of WCW Saturday night. We see Jim Ross and Bob Caudle down at ringside. They pump up a huge night’s worth of action and we get right into the action with our first contest!

Tim Horner & Brad Armstrong vs Black Bart & Ron Bass
-Jim Cornette joins JR and Tony here as they pump up the US tag title bout next week at the Clash of the Champions. Here we see Horner and Armstrong sell for Ron Bass and Black Bart before making a big comeback and using their speed to overcome their opponents. The finish is a big double dropkick on Bass knocking him out of the ring. This leads to a fun double-team with Horner ducking behind and Armstrong hitting Bart with a flying cross body and he falls over Horner for the 3-count! They celebrate and point at Corney and make the sign for the US Tag Titles!

*COMMERCIAL*

-We get a quick view of Stan Hansen showing up on Saturday Night a couple of weeks ago and then we see him come to the ring… terrorizing everyone in his path.

Stan Hansen vs Jack Reno
-This one is quick and we see Hansen just completely destroy Reno. He continues to hammer down on him and Reno looks helpless. The Lariat spells the end and Hansen pulls up him for another! Hansen isn’t done… he pulls him up again and LARIAT! Reno is unconscious! The referee calls for the bell. Hansen pulls the referee off and throws him down. More officials come out and Hansen is going ballistic throwing people around. We see Doug Dillinger come in there with more men and Hansen has to back off. This is pure chaos as we head to the back with Tony Schiavone.

-Schiavone is in the back with Dusty Rhodes and Dick Murdoch. They are pumping up this big match with Rick Rude. They know what’s on the line. They say they’re ready for whatever Rude can do and Murdoch is going to secure his spot!

Dick Murdoch vs Rick Rude w/ Jimmy Hart
-A really fun match with these two working the crowd. Dicky seems to have his boots on tonight and really has the crowd going wild but Rude is also a heat magnet. Jimmy Hart is also playing a key role here and working the crowd. We get a commercial break in the middle of things but come back to see Rude on top. Murdoch fights his way back with the fans going wild. We see Jimmy Hart trying to get involved but Murdoch and Rude are also over there. We see Murdoch rear back and accidently hammer the referee who goes down hard. This causes some chaos with Rude and Murdoch brawling but Murdoch getting the best of him and throwing him into Jimmy Hart… the other side of the ring tells a different story though and KING KONG BUNDY is shown! He’s waiting for Murdoch who turns around and BELLY TO BELLY SUPLEX! Bundy then hits the ropes and BIG SPLASH! Bundy rolls out the ring and Rude covers as the referee slowly moves over for the 3-count! The fans are not happy!

*COMMERCIAL*

-Ross and Caudle are back putting over the fact that we will see Rick Rude and Dusty Rhodes at the Clash of the Champions for the US Title! They also announce that the board of directors is meeting right now about Stan Hansen!  We will have more on that in coming minutes but right now we’ve got the debuting Curt Hennig in action!

The Italian Stallion vs Curt Hennig
-Hennig comes out and works the fans. A little love for him but he’s got a lot of heat as well. Hennig is all over the Stallion and finishes him off with a nice fisherman’s suplex for the 3-count. Hennig looks great and works the crowd… a bright future for this young star!

-We then cut to Sting, Luger, Windham, & Simmons. They are pumping up the big eight-man tag main event tonight. Sting says that tonight is going to be a nice little preview of what he’s going to do to Ric Flair at the Clash along with Windham and Luger winning the tag titles and Ron Simmons getting the tv title!

Tommy Rich vs Arn Anderson w/ JJ Dillon
-A good little tv match with Rich and Anderson. They really put on a clinic with both men getting some offense but it is Anderson who counters the Thesz Press into a backbreaking SPINEBUSTER for the 3-count victory.

*COMMERCIAL*

-Saturday Night is back… Ross and Caudle make the announcement that Stan Hansen has been suspended indefinitely. His attack on the referees has been unwarranted. He has a $100,000 fine to be reinstated. They will have more on that issue next week… right now it is time for the Road Warriors taking on Terry Taylor and Buddy Landel!

The Road Warriors vs Terry Taylor & Buddy Landel
-A fun contest that sees the Road Warrior give just enough to make it interesting but then they turn it on and it is cady bar the door! The big finish sees Landel attempt a flying press but Road Warrior Animal catches him and a HUGE POWERSLAM for the 3-count! The Road Warriors look strong and ready for whatever gets in their way!

*COMMERCIAL*

We return for a very special segment in which Ric Flair w/ JJ Dillon and Sting are in the ring. Jim Crockett Jr is with them along with promoter Gary Jester and ring announcer Tom Miller as well as Jim Ross. Ross is orchestrating everything as they announce the three special judges for the Clash of the Champions World Heavyweight Championship match. Tom Miller runs through the judges...

They pump up Stan Hansen’s suspension and $100,000 fine! They pump up the main event in a big way as we head to the ring and here...we...go!

MAIN EVENT
8-Man Tag
Sting, Barry Windham, Lex Luger, & Ron Simmons vs The Varsity Club w/ Kevin Sullivan
-Lots of heat… lots of energy… lots of tags… and LOTS OF ACTION! They go about 15-minutes with very little tv time left after that. Kevin Sullivan is getting involved but the highlight of the match is seeing Sting fly over the top rope and take out Steiner, Spivey, and Sullivan. Simmons and Williams are fighting on the outside and the finish sees Rotundo go for the five-arm on Luger but he ducks and Windham flies off the top rope with a lariat that takes Rotunod’s head off for the 3-count! The fans go wild. The babyfaces celebrate. Jim Ross has lost his voice. We’ll see you next week as we get geared up for the Clash of the by gawd Champions!

Wow. Having Roddy Piper as one of the 3 judges at ringside for Clash of the Champions sure puts a twist to what happened IRL. This is gonna be one helluva match!

Great show there.  I love the way that Stan Hansen is destroying everyone, including the referees.  Also loved the impact King Kong Bundy had in the Murdoch match.

But the biggest impact is the announcement of Roddy Piper as a judge.  That should be awesome.  Flair is not happy, but the history between Flair and Roddy is so complicated, who knows what the motivations of Roddy will be.  Looking forward to finding out.

-Ross and Schiavone put over last week’s big night.  They welcome Jim Crockett Jr right off the bat…

vlcsnap2011041817h52m16.jpg

-Ross, Schaivone, and Crockett run through the big night last week and then Crockett announces that Stan Hansen’s suspension is still upheld even after an appeal. Crockett says there is a zero tolerance policy in WCW against hurting referees. Hansen will be forced to pay a $100,000 fine in order to be reinstated. He has spoken to Hansen and he has already denied his willingness to pay the fine. Until the fine is paid… Hansen will not be allowed at WCW events and will not be receiving a paycheck. They turned their attention to Rick Rude in which Crockett announced that Rude would indeed be facing Dusty Rhodes at the Clash tomorrow night with the title on the line. He understands that King Kong Bundy got involved but has already signed a bout between Murdoch and Bundy for Murdoch to get his revenge. The last thing they discuss is Rowdy Roddy Piper! Crockett announces that Piper has only signed on to be a judge tomorrow night at the Clash. He hopes to hear more from him later this evening but before he can continue we see Ric Flair come out with JJ Dillon and the crowd pops big time!

Ric Flair: Let me be the first to tell you Jim Crockett that the sale of Jim Crockett Promotions to Ted Turner has made me rich beyond my wildest dreams…. But then you had to go and sign Roddy Piper! I don’t know if you know what is going on around here… but you and I both know he is not an impartial judge… you and I both know he has got an issue with me and everyone knows he is going to do anything he can to stop me tomorrow night.

Crockett: Well Ric… I would guess that your best chance at not letting Roddy Piper get involved would be for you to just go ahead and beat Sting… if you can.

Ric Flair: Listen up pal… you and I have been around the world but right now we’re eye to eye but I don’t think you can see me. I don’t think you can hear me.

Crockett: No Ric… I don’t think you can hear me… you see… the only reason Piper would get involved is if you can’t be Sting in 60 minutes… if that’s the case then it will be up to him. I think you better stop worrying about me and start worrying about him. In fact… if you have anything to say to Roddy Piper… he’ll be here later on tonight and you can do it then. I’ve got business to take care of.

-Flair is irate as Crockett walks off… Ross and Tony put over our next match when we come back… here come the Rockers!

*COMMERCIAL*

King Kong Bundy w/ Jimmy Hart & Rick Rude defeated Tom Shaw & Sam Michaels in a handicap match with the 5-count!

-We then cut to a promo with Jimmy Hart who is joined by Rick Rude & Bundy. They say anything can happen and tomorrow night they are walking out with the US title by any means! Jimmy Hart then says that next week he is going to be bringing in a very special attraction… Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart… the HART FOUNDATION BABY! They are his premiere tag team and they are going to show everyone what tag team wrasslin is all about baby! Ross and Schiavone put it over but then pump up the Rockers who are in action next!

The Rockers defeated Jimmy Knight & Ronny Davis

*COMMERCIAL*

Mike Rotundo w/ Kevin Sullivan defeated Burt Peterson

-Rotundo is joined by the rest of the Varsity Club. They put over the eight-man tag and the clear miscommunication due to the referee. They talk about having some serious plans for 1988 and it starts with the Clash but continues next month with the Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup. Sullivan says he has got some internal news and knows that there will be two Varsity Club teams represented… one of them is sure to win. Tomorrow night… they will exert their force on Ron Simmons but this time Sting, Windham, and Luger won’t be there to help him!

Buddy Landel defeated Otto Samson

*COMMERCIAL*

The Road Warriors defeated The Night Ryders

-A big time promo from the Road Warriors who build up from Sullivan earlier and say that they’ve spoken to Jim Crockett Jr already… they are in the Crockett Cup and have got destruction on their mind and don’t care who is in front of them!

Ron Simmons defeated Lenny Riggins

*COMMERCIAL*

Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard w/ JJ Dillon defeated Ken Turns & Ryle Willis

The Horsemen (JJ, Arn, & Tully) put over the Clash of the Champions and say they have secured the 4th member. They will be revealed when the time is right. They say that the tag team title match will be the final hand played and the Horsemen will set themselves apart from the rest of the wrestling world like usual when it is all said and done. This brings out Terry Taylor who says he has all the tools to be the 4th Horsemen. Tully and Arn put him over and JJ says he’ll watch on just to see what Terry Taylor has to offer...

Terry Taylor defeated Cael Hughes

-We’re back with Tony and Jim putting over the big announcement of Rowdy Roddy Piper signing on to be the special judge for the World Title match at the Clash. We then hear the bag pipes and the Rowdy One makes his way out to the set. The fans are going wild for him and he says he’s happy to be back… but before he can even talk… here comes Ric Flair!

Ric Flair: Before you start anything pal… let me be the first to say… welcome to WCW!

Piper: Well Ric… I guess… thank you…

Flair: The pleasantries are over… what in the hell are you doing here Piper?

Piper: Haha… there’s the man I know… listen pal… I signed on to come in and judge a match. They said they needed someone who knew the sport… who knew what it was all about to be a champion…

Flair: In my book pal… you’ve never been world champion… so I don’t know who thought you’d know anything about this title…

Piper: Well Ric…  I know what it means to be a CHAMPION! What you are… well… i can’t say those words on television.

Flair: Oh yeah big man… well this isn’t Hollywood… you’ve been out making movies and having someone else fall for you… well pal when you step in this ring you’re stepping in there with me… the World’s Champion.

Piper: I am not here to wrestling Ric… I mean… do you people want to see me wrestle?

{The crowd pops huge!}

Piper: Well… maybe I might be here to wrestle…

Flair: This is what I am talking about. You’re out here to play games… this is my world Piper and in my world I make the rules…

Piper: Well I guess I am in your world then Ric… and when you make the rules… I change the game pal! You haven’t scared me one bit!

Flair: Don’t think for a minu…

Piper: You just bite your tongue there pally… you just sit back for a minute and let me tell you a thing or two about a thing or two. You talk bad about me in a dream, you better wake up and apologize. I am not here for your pleasure or fodder… I am here to call in down the line and boy you are looking at a man who doesn’t play by anyone’s rules. Not you… not Jim Crockett… not WCW! I am here to watch Sting whoop you for that title in front of a million people. I get a ringside seat at history and you better not worry about me but you better worry about 6’2, 250 pounds of Venice Beach Bad Boy and he is coming for you and that title and me and a million other people are going to watch it go down tomorrow night. Now Ric… you feel that cold sweat… that cold sweat going down your back… that Ric Flair… that’s fear… you may not know it yet but inside that little brain of yours I am already inside playing any game that I want to play. You want me to fight.. I’ll fight… but tomorrow night I am just there to watch and watch is exactly what I am going to do!

-Roddy pushes the microphone in Ric’s face and walks off and the crowd pops! Flair is in shock as Ross and Tony put this over in a big way!

*COMMERCIAL*

-We see Tony and Ross putting over Roddy Piper in a big way! We see Bart and Bass come out and work the fans and then Luger… but Windham is not there… wait a second… we see Windham in the back trying to come out but it is JJ Dillon who is talking to him with Arn Anderson… Luger comes over and he argues with them while Windham backs him up towards the ring… What is going on here?!?!

MAIN EVENT
Barry Windham & Lex Luger vs Ron Bass & Black Bart w/ Bill Irwin
-There’s definitely some mis-communication with Luger and Windham here. Bass and Bart are getting the edge with limited television time remaining. The crowd is in it and cheering for Luger and Windham. We see Bill Irwin getting involved outside the ring. The finish sees Luger go out to the floor and then Irwin putting the boots to him while Bass and Bart are doubling up on Windham inside the ring. The crowd then stirs when Tully Blanchard comes out and nails Irwin and then he picks up Luger who looks at him with wild eyes… Blanchard backs off and then Luger comes in with some big clotheslines and he and Barry get the upperhand before Windham comes off the top rope with a Bulldog on Bass for the 3-count! Luger and Windham aren’t done though as they are now jaw jacking with one another outside the ring!

-Sting runs out and breaks them apart and brings them to the booth. They continue to argue but Sting gets them settled. He puts over the Clash tomorrow night and how the Horsemen are playing mind games with both of them! He tells them to stay focused… stay focused on the gold! Tomorrow night they can turn the tide of WCW and get control from the Horsemen!

Sting: FLAIR! I see what you’re doing… don’t think for a second that I am not looking at you boy. Don’t think for a second that I don’t have you in my sights! When a scorpion strikes...it strikes to take out whatever is in its way and brother you’re in my way! I am coming for that title Flair… we’re coming for the tag titles. TOGETHER! TOGETHER! LET’S GO!

-Sting, Windham, and Luger all shake hands… Ross and Schiavone put it over… tomorrow night in the OMNI… it is the CLASH OF CHAMPIONS!

Loved the promo between Flair and Piper. With all the tension and uneasiness between them, makes you wonder if Flair had JJ Dillon & Arn Anderson talk to Barry Windham to deflect the attention here. Smart booking!

We’ll see the TV title match from the Clash of the Champions that couldn’t air due to time constraints. Plus the Hart Foundation make their debut! Right now let’s head to the ring for our opening contest!

Tommy Rich defeated Bobby Richards via the Thesz Press!

*COMMERCIAL*

Big Bubba Rogers w/ Jim Cornette & The MXE defeated Tom Snow & Al Wertz

-Jim Cornette and the MXE come over with Bubba and put themselves over along with the Crockett Cup coming up. Cornette says that he knows the MXE should be the number one seed but figueres that Jim Crockett will figure out a way to screw that up. He says that Big Bubba has even been looking for a partner to secure a win for the Midnights! Ross and Schiavone wonder who it could be but James E is keeping quiet… we’ll find out soon enough!

Boris Zhukov & Nikolia Vokoff defeated Tommy Jones & Rock Watson

*COMMERCIAL*

-Saturday Night is back with footage of Rick Rude winning the US title. We see Rude, Bundy, and Jimmy Hart celebrating at the stand. Ross and Schiavone put over how they stole the title with the help of Stan Hansen and Jimmy Hart acts like he doesn’t even know who that is! He says that he has entered Rude and Bundy in the Crockett Cup and now he’s going to be a millionaire! He says he has another team in the cup… he wants to introduce everyone to Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart… the HART FOUNDATION BABY!

The Hart Foundation defeat the Shadows via the Hart Attack!

-The Harts get a good reaction from the crowd with some boos and jeers but when they go over to the booth… they proclaim that they are the Hart Foundation… but not Jimmy Hart’s HART FOUNDATION! They are here for a purpose… they’re here to show everyone why they are the best team in wrestling and they’re going to prove it at the Crockett Cup! They walk off to some major cheers while Rude and Bundy can’t believe it and Jimmy Hart is going nuts!

*COMMERCIAL*

Dick Murdoch defeated Ronny Williams

-Dick Murdoch and Dusty Rhodes join Tony and Jim Ross… Dusty takes over…

Dusty: Ladies and gentlemen… I have stood out here for years and talked about the pain, blues, and agony of this sport. I have talked about the miscarriages of justice that have fallen on me in the past but I have also talked about my triumphs. I have never done it alone… I have had friends and I have had the fans. But this next fight… ladies and gentlemen… I have to go it alone. Stan Hansen...the master of the Lariat! The man who has wreaked havoc and caused terror all over the world if you will. Stan Hansen… our paths have only crossed a hand full of times and brother we’ve both felt it. I put a letter on the desk of Jim Crockett Jr this morning to give you a full reinstatement so I can kick your ass! I am begging Jim Crockett… I am begging WCW… give me what I want… give these people what they want… GIVE ME STAN HANSEN!

The Road Warriors defeated Mike Kelly & Tim Simms

-The Road Warriors come over after killing these guys and put over Dusty’s comments but also say that they know Hansen… they know Rhodes… when it comes down to it… it will be a war… but a war they aren’t apart of and don’t want anything to do with because they are focused primarily on the Crockett Cup! They want the Million Dollars again! Once you taste it once… you can’t get the taste out of your mouth and we’re hungry. We snack on danger and dine on death and dead men don’t cash checks but you’re looking at the two baddest dudes on the block who have got one thing in mind and that is pain and destruction for everyone in our path!

*COMMERCIAL*

-Ross and Schiavone put over the Clash and build up to the TV title match that we’ll see now in its entirety!

TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP
Ron Simmons vs Mike Rotundo ©
-A decent contest here but nothing too crazy. These guys are on after Flair and Sting and the live crowd doesn’t show much love for it after that last match. They go about 11-minutes but Rotundo has to do a lot of the work. Simmons power is definitely something to behold but it just isn’t all there yet. The finish sees Simmons get a big head of steam and even hit the SPINEBUSTER on Rotundo. When he goes up to the top rope for the shoulder block, Sullivan distracts the referee and Dr. Death comes out of nowhere with an Oklahoma Sooners helmet and just CRACKS Simmons in the skull. He hunches over and falls to the mat for Rotundo to make the pinfall and retain the title!

*COMMERCIAL*

-We’re back on set with the Varsity Club and Sullivan has got the Oklahoma Sooners helmet on the table...

Kevin Sullivan: Ron Simmons… you see these Oklahoma Helmet… this was the helmet worn by Steve Williams on January 1st, 1981! It was the helmet he wore when the Oklahoma Sooners BEAT the Florida State Seminoles in the Orange Bowl! You see during that game… Steve Williams got to play at offensive guard against the great Ron Simmons of Florida State. It was in that game that Ron Simmons was playing dirty! He was poking eyes. He was punching people in the throat. He was an all out cheater! Well… Ron Simmons… how the tables have turned… but not really. On January 1st, 1981… the Oklahoma Sooners defeated Florida State… and on March the 27th, 1988, it was the 5th quarter of that game and look once again… Oklahoma came out on top! HAHAHA!

-This draws out Ron Simmons who is got piss and fire running through his veins with security holding him back. He challenges Williams to a fight and Dr. Death doesn’t back down! Simmons shoves the football helmet back into Williams face and Dr. Death challenges him to a football fight at the Crockett Cup! Come any way you want but ready to BRAWL! Simmons gladly accepts and it looks like we’ve got a fight brewing! Security escorts Simmons to the back while we cut to the ring for the Varsity Club in tag team action!

Dan Spivey & Rick Steiner defeated Johnny Jones & Mark Dupree via the Powerbomb!

*COMMERCIAL*

Terry Taylor defeated Norman Mason with the Five-Arm!

-Flair, Arn, Tully, and JJ come out to cut a promo but Terry Taylor jumps in again...He puts over how he’s been winning week in and week out! The Horsemen give him his due… but JJ puts over how Terry Taylor is on a short list… a very short list… but there’s someone else on the list and we’ll see him in just a few minutes. Arn and Tully put over the Crockett Cup and talk about being the number one team in wrestling for a reason… it is these tag titles and they will face anyone for them… anytime… anyplace! Ric Flair then goes on a huge rant saying he knows it is going to be Windham, Luger, or Sting at the Crockett Cup but the end result will be the same with him holding the title. Ross points out Roddy Piper but Flair says that Piper is nowhere to be found and he won’t be in the ring anytime soon! Flair continues to put himself over and then the Horsemen say they will stand by and watch the next match with a close eye...

Curt Hennig defeated Donny Knight with the Fisherman’s Suplex

*COMMERCIAL*

Jim Crockett is here and he makes the official announcement for the 2-night… 14 team… 1 Million Dollar Tag Team Tournament. He says that the top two teams in WCW… the World Tag Team Champions Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard along with the US Tag Team Champions the Midnight Express will both receive byes in the first round and begin action in round number two. The remaining teams will be randomly drawn and those pairings will be released in two weeks right here on Saturday Night. Here are the remaining teams...

Crockett says a world heavyweight championship match has been signed… The Nature Boy Ric Flair will be defending the World Championship against the Total Package Lex Luger on the second night of the Crockett Cup!

*COMMERCIAL*

-Ross and Schiavone are back putting over the teams in the Crockett Cup and how the Horsemen and MXE will get byes! They also put over Lex Luger getting a chance to take on Ric Flair for the World Title. We then get to our Main Event with the man called Sting in action!

Sting vs Buddy Landel
-A fun matchup for the Stinger who goes about 12-minutes with Buddy Landel. They put on a good show for the fans and just when Landel tires to put the Stinger down he comes back with a huge flurry.  Landel runs and Sting ducks out of the way. He then hits a Stinger splash in the corner nailing both men before going up top for a high cross body and the 3-count!

-Sting, Luger, and Windham walk over to the booth and are going wild! They put over the Crockett Cup and how this is going to be different than the Clash. This is the night they will get their revenge on the Horsemen. That draws the Horsemen out and Flair and company are calling them out for a match but when Sting, Luger, and Windham accept they back off to say not here… not now… but behind the Horsemen is none other than Rowdy Roddy Piper! Piper gets right in Flair’s face as Luger and Sting turn Arn and Tully around and knock them down! Flair swings at Piper who ducks and then atomic drops him into Luger who backdrops him over the announce table! The crowd is going wild as we go off the air!

I am loving the direction of the Horsemen and their feud with Sting, Luger and Windham.  Still not convinced that Windham won't be joining them, but I could be wrong.  Even more exciting is what you are doing with HotRod.

And the Hart Foundation are part of the company now, and have already turned on Jimmy.  Could be an dark-horse favorite to win the Crockett Cup.

WCW Saturday Night

WTBS Studios - Atlanta, Georgia

4/9/88

-Saturday Night opens up this week with Jim Cornette at ringside with Big Bubba and the MXE. He is pumping up the Crockett Cup and the release of the bracket next week.

Jim Cornette: Ladies and germs… I am out here to let everyone know who is going to win the Crockett Cup. It is this team right here… Beautiful Bobby and Sweet Stan… the Midnight Express. I have cashed in one of momma’s insurance policies to make sure of it and I have gone out and got the perfect partner for Big Bubba Rogers. He stands 6’9” and weighs in at 450 pounds. He really needs no introduction but I am going to give one to him anyways… ladies and germs… he is the one and the only ONE MAN GANG!

-Gang comes out to a chorus of boos! He and Bubba shake hands and then get in the ring for our opening contest!

Big Bubba & One Man Gang defeated Bobby Fyre & Tony Storm via the 747 from OMG!

-They walk back over and Jim Cornette is putting over how these two are bigger than the Road Warriors, they are Stronger than the Road Warriors, they are meaner than the Road Warriors and they will DESTROY the Road Warriors when the time comes. Their only hope is to get a draw on the other side of the bracket… they can run but they won’t be able to hide!

*COMMERCIAL*

Rick Steiner & Danny Spivey defeated Henry Shaw & Ryan Roberts via the powerbomb!

-The Varsity Club comes over and joins Tony and Ross who put over both of their teams in the Crockett Cup. Sullivan says that he’s joining the Television Champion because he wants to get his hands on some of these teams out there who have claimed to be top tier in the WCW. He says that with two teams, the Varsity Club has the odds and the chances to make history and they will do just that. Then he turns his attention to Ron Simmons. He says that he has put out the option for Ron Simmons to join the Varsity Club but he made the wrong choice and that’s a choice that is going to haunt him the rest of his career… and the end of that career comes when Dr. Death gets to face him in the football Brawl at the Crockett Cup. The rules are simple… come showing your colors… there are no rules… it is a brawl till a man can’t make the 10 count. Just like in football when you can’t get the 10 yards for a first down… when you can’t answer the 10 count you lose! Ross and Schiavone put it over in a big way as we cut to the ring for Buddy Landel

Buddy Landel defeated Quincy Sharpe via the Figure Four Leglock!

-The Russians come out and talk about joining the Crockett Cup as a true worldly team. They know what it takes to win the Million Dollars and they know they will do whatever it takes and take out whoever is in their way!

-Ross and Schaivone are back putting over the big announcements from Jim Crockett last week. The one announcement they spend some time on is the Butch Reed vs Hacksaw Jim Duggan exhibition. We see Butch Reed come into the set and he looks jacked and ready to kill someone. Reed is flanked by his manager… Slick!

butch-reed-15bfeca1-c4d2-4c4e-ac10-17a38

Reed is flexing and working the crowd while Slick talking about how he has been on the backburner for too long and now it is time to shine brighter than he ever has before. He says that Jim Duggan is a cross-eyed fool and Reed is going to put him down the hard way. This brings out Duggan who comes in with some great fanfare. He tells Slick and Butch Reed to shut the hell up before he gets in the ring...

Jim Duggan defeated Tom Roberts via the 3-point stance clothesline!

-Duggan comes over and works the crowd before saying that he’s like a prize fighter. Someone who comes in for a big showdown and this time it is Butch Reed who is he’s up against. He says he knows Reed from his time in the Mid South but this is a new territory and a new fight and he is a new Jim Duggan who has got fists of fire and they are ready to take him out… TOUGH GUY!

*COMMERCIAL*

They talk about this being one of Luger’s first chances to get a World title match since leaving the Horsemen in the early part of the year. We see Luger come out with Sting and Windham. Ross and Schaivone put over their entry in the Crockett Cup as we cut to the ring for them in action.

Sting & Barry Windham defeated Bobby Roy & Steve Archer via the Flying Cross Body!

-We cut back over and Lex Luger is standing by and he’s got words for Ric Flair…

Lex Luger: Tony Schiavone… Jim Ross… everyone knows my history with the Horsemen. I was brought in to be the muscle… the power… the one who could stand up against the Road Warriors. Well I did my job and I did it well. I was a United States Champion. By hook or by crook that title was taken from me… but all the while I was the number one contender for the World Title but I never got my shot! My role was to protect Ric Flair… well Flair… who is protecting you now? You are looking at the number one contender for that title and I am coming for it brother. I am coming for it with every ounce of energy in my body and every fiber of my being! I stood by for too long… watching you hold that title and tell everyone you were the best. Well Flair… now you’re looking at the best and I am coming for that title!

*COMMERCIAL*

-Saturday Night is back with Ross and Schiavone putting over how we will hear from Roddy Piper here tonight about his announcement. We will also have a special showdown when King Kong Bundy takes on Jim Neidhart in our main event! Right now it is time to head to the ring for a special match involving Terry Taylor!

Terry Taylor defeated Kendall Flanagan via the Figure Four Leg Lock!

-The Horsemen are here… Flair, JJ, Arn, & Tully come out and once again Terry Taylor makes his case to join the Horsemen but this time JJ Dillon says that he and Curt Hennig are the finalists… next week they will face off with the Horsemen at ringside and the winner earning that fourth and final spot! We cut to Hennig in action!

Curt Hennig defeated Ron Wight via the Fisherman’s Suplex!

-The Horsemen all give Hennig his due and talk about next week’s match. Then we hear Arn and Tully put over the Crockett Cup and how next week it is on the line when they have to defend the world tag titles. They are told they will be facing the Rockers and Arn and Tully aren’t happy about it. They talk about the possibility of losing the titles and the number one seed… but then they’d wake up because that’s just a dream! We then cut over to JJ who puts over the Hennig vs Taylor match next week in a big way. Then Flair goes off on Lex Luger being a million dollar body with a 10 cent brain. If he was smart he would have stayed an Horsemen.. Instead he made the dumbest decision of his life and now he’s going to have to live with the fact he was never going to be able to beat Ric Flair. Now Flair turns his attention to Roddy Piper and says he can’t wait for his big announcement later tonight and he plans on being there to watch it all go down!

*COMMERCIAL*

-Dusty Rhodes comes out and he is despondent about the decision that Jim Crockett made. He says he wants a face to face with Crockett about this decision. He wants Stan Hansen in the ring and he wants Crockett and WCW to make it happen!

The Road Warriors defeated Tim Rich and Mike Regan via the Doomsday Device!

-The Road Warriors come over and discuss the Crockett Cup. They know that with the random draw anything can happen. They can’t wait to find out who they face and where the Midnights are! They also talk about Bubba and the Gang and put over how they may have a hard time putting them up but when they his the Doomsday Device they will put them right through the RING!

*COMMERCIAL*

-We return with footage from last week’s debut of the Hart Foundation but also the souring of the moment when they announced they wouldn’t be joining Jimmy Hart. We then cut to a big time main event with Bundy joined by Rude and Hart to take on Jim Neidhart who’s joined by the Hitman!

MAIN EVENT
Jim Neidhart w/ Bret Hart vs King Kong Bundy w/ Rick Rude & Jimmy Hart
-A fun little main event that gets out of hand pretty quickly. We see Jim and Bundy put in some work but it is Jimmy Hart who is setting things off the deep end. He is getting involved… every chance he gets which gets Bret involved leading to he and Rick fighting outside the ring. This all serves as a distraction for Bundy to nail Jim Neidhart with an avalanche in the corner that ends up being a 3-count. Bundy, Rude, and Jimmy all escape with a chaotic win as the Anvil is looking to get himself together with the Hitman as this one is far, far from over!

*COMMERCIAL*

-Saturday Night is back with Jim Crockett in the back having to be ushered to the set with Dusty Rhodes trying to get his attention. Rhodes is escorted to the back and Jim Crockett says he will speak with him soon. He comes out to the announce booth and discusses the Crockett Cup. He announces that the pairings will be released next week. The special attractions on night two include Butch Reed taking on Hacksaw Jim Duggan along with the World Title match between Ric Flair and Lex Luger. One night one, we’ll see the special Football Brawl and a match including…

Roddy Piper comes out to a huge ovation!

-Crockett puts over how Rowdy Roddy Piper will be in action on night one of the Crockett Cup! Piper says he has been waiting for this moment for almost one year and can’t wait to step back inside the ring...but this brings out the Horsemen. Flair is out with Arn and Tully flanking him while JJ is behind.

Ric Flair: You said a couple of weeks ago that when I change the rules you change the game. Well pal… now you’re in my game. You see I had the inside scoop that this would be happening… so I did what I could to purchase the contract for your big return match Piper. You see the Horsemen… we’ve got our hands full at the Crockett Cup… but when you’ve got the money we’ve got… the resources we’ve got… you make this happen. So it was signed this morning… your opponent… as personally financed by the Horsemen will be...

-That’s Jimmy Snuka! Snuka is here and he looks right at Piper. He smirks at him and Piper has got a severe look in his eyes. We are running out of time but the final view is Piper standing eye to eye with both Flair and Snuka more next week fans!

Wow a great and action packed episode of Saturday Night.  One Man Gan is going to team with the Bossman.  That is a formidable team... but can they co-exist with the Midnights.  And speaking of co-existing, Luger and Windham get a win, but Luger just talks about challenging Flair.  This is not going to sit well with Big Barry.

JJ announces Taylor vs Hennig next week with the winner in the Horsemen.... sorry but I am still not convinced.  This does not seem like a Horsemen plan.  I have a feeling something else will go down.

And Jimmy gets a win over the Hart Foundation, but you just know that when the Harts get a tag match against Bundy and Rude things will be very different.

And finally the Horsemen hire Snuka to face Piper.  This will be a classic flashback for Piper, and you just know that JJ and Flair have something up their sleeve for when the match takes place.....

Really enjoying what you are building in WCW.

Give credit to the Nature Boy. Usually doesn't think outside of the box but picking Jimmy Snuka to wrestle Piper is a brilliant move on his part, given their history together!

Roddy Piper: I just want to take a moment and apologize for my actions. I let my temper get the best of me and you guys know me… sometimes that happens. Well… I will be honest I came here to WCW to be a judge man but when I was ringside I got this itch. I got this itch in the back of my neck and it made me want to jump in the ring and well… you know… I called the big guy and we had a deal… a deal to come back for a couple of matches… just to see where I was at mentally with it. As most of you know… I am not always with it mentally… or am I? Well I signed on to face someone at the Clash… they said it would be a showcase… or an exhibition… then… last week I meet my opponent… thanks to Ric Flair. I have always been a step ahead but now I find myself with my back against the wall. The way I see it… you either bow down or you break what is in front of you and Jimmy Snuka… I am coming brother. I have fought you all over the world… you’ve beat me and I have beat you but this… this is different. I have got something to prove… and I am going to prove it at the Crockett Cup. I want Ric Flair to be there watching. Flair… I wanted to come back for a couple of matches… but now I am back for one reason… and that reason is YOU! I am coming for you and there’s nothing you can do about it!

Ron Simmons defeated Bobby Steele

-The Varsity Club is out in full force and Sullivan is going wild butting everyone over and talking about the Football Brawl and the Crockett Cup. He says that he and Rotundo will do whatever it takes but knows that he’s got double the chance to really cash in and that’s what is going to happen. He says we’ll see the end of Ron Simmons next week and the Varsity Club is going to win a Million Dollars! HAHAHA

It is going to be something special! Right now we see Butch Reed in action!

Butch Reed w/ Slick defeated George Qunicy via the Flying Clothesline!

-Jim Duggan comes out to a great ovation while he and Ross and Schiavone put over the Crockett Cup. He says he was here two years ago and won and plans on doing the same thing this time. He says that he has liked being in WCW so far and looks to make it his home just like the good ol US of A… TOUGH GUY!

*COMMERCIAL*

-JJ Dillon comes out and he’s got Arn and Tully with him. They put over the next match and how this will be the deciding factor in who will join the Horsemen. Arn and Tully put over the match with the Rockers coming up. They say that Ric Flair is in the back watching closely. We head to the ring...

Terry Taylor vs Curt Hennig
-A really fun contest that gets 15-minutes but around the 10-minute mark things start to break loose. We see both men get in some offense but it is Taylor who gets the upperhand. The Horsemen seem to be cheering him on but then he misses a clothesline and goes out to the floor. Tully distracts the referee and Arn Anderson grabs Terry Taylor and hits him with the DDT on the FLOOR! OH MY! He picks up his lifeless body and puts him in the ring for Hennig to pick him up and NORTHERN LIGHTS SUPLEX for the 3-count!

-The medics come out to help Taylor who is a bloody mess but the Horsemen are putting the boots to him in a big way! They are hammering on him until Ric Flair comes out and they join him at the booth. They officially welcome Curt Hennig to the Horsemen and give him a Rolex Watch! Hennig says it is an honor to be a Horsemen and he is going to be the PERFECT pick for them! Ric Flair then goes off…

Ric Flair: PIPER! LUGER! STING! WINDHAM! We are together now and boys… there’s no stopping us! Look at Terry Taylor right now.... Look at him drenched in his own blood. He’ll never be the same again! Piper… when Snuka gets done with you… I will finish off whatever is left! Sting and Windham… the Crockett Cup… we saw the brackets boys… if you make it to the finals… the Horsemen will be there waiting! Then there’s Luger. Flexy Lexy… pal you couldn’t cut it with us so you think you can beat us!?! Huh? Pal… you have got a million dollar body with a 10 cent brain and there’s no way on God’s Green Earth you’re walking out with the title! Pal… you don’t have the tank to go 60-minutes with me… ask Sting… ask anyone… I am holding this title for as long as I want and as long as I hold it… I drive the biggest cars… I fly the fanciest planes… and I kiss the prettiest women because I am the World’s Heavyweight Champion pal. The Horsemen are together… we have got our eyes on the prize and it is gold, money, and women and we’re taking it all! WOOOOO!

*COMMERCIAL*

Lex Luger, Barry Windham, & Sting defeated Kyle Stevens, Mark Rico, & Jim Storm via the Torture Rack!

-Luger, Windham, and Sting come over and put over all the events of the night. They talk talk about the Crockett Cup and the bracket. They put over all the tough competitors in front of them but know they have what it takes. Then we get Lex Luger talking about the world title…

Lex Luger: Flair… you come out here and talk about the cars, the plans, and the women but you don’t talk about the gym, the training, and the heart. The heart it takes to be a champion! Flair… you’ve held the title more than anyone… you know what it is about… you know all about the game but pal… look right here… the game is changing. It is faster… it is stronger… and it is VICIOUS! I am coming with everything I have got Flair. You wanna call me Flexy Lexy… well look at this pal…. (Luger pumps up the double bicep) I am 265 pounds of pure muscle pal. I am head to toe the greatest athlete of this generation and I am making it my vow right now to all these people that I am going to take that title. I am going to end your reign once and for all and pal… there will be no coming back from it!

*COMMERCIAL*

-Ross and Schiavone put over all the big happenings from tonight and pump up the Crockett Cup in a big way.

MAIN EVENT
WCW WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
The Rockers vs Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard © w/ JJ Dillon
-We got about 20-minutes of television time allotted for this match. These guys come right out of the gate and go balls to the wall. This is a real coming out situation for the Rockets. They are fists and fire every second. The Horsemen are on a high right now but they have to slow things down. When they do it is the momentum building for the Rockers that changes the situation. With the time limit running down we see Arn Anderson counter a big splash from Marty Jannetty and it takes him over the top rope to the floor! The referee doesn’t see it though! Arn and Tully go out and they start hammering away on Marty and then off the top rope Shawn Michaels leaps and takes out everyone! The time has run out. Jim Ross and Tony Schiavone put it over in a big way! We’ll see you next week at the Crockett Cup!

Awesome episode of Saturday night.  piper's promo was gold, and I can't wait for his match against Snuka, or for his growing feud with Flair.  And then we get the Perfect 4 horsemen with Hennig joining the elite group.  Loved the match, and the post-match promo.  Then Luger comes out and cuts his rebuttle, and do I get the impression that Luger may be brining in some more back-up???  Great work.  really enjoying the build to the Crockett Cup, although I have been surprised that we have not seen much of the Road Warriors recently.....

I have to speak to the road warriors, it's something that I've noticed especially when writing, I feel like their presence is so powerful that I don't need to show them as much if that makes sense. It's almost like that idea of why Andre was so much better than the big show and it was because you didn't see him as much. I think that's the route I'm going with the road warriors where they may not be on TV every week but everybody knows who they are and what they're all about. It was something that was brought up in the death of the territories book and that has kind of stuck with me over the last couple weeks of writing.

WCW Saturday Night

WTBS Studios - Atlanta, Georgia

4/23/88

-Tony Schaivone is in the studio in the middle of the ring and he is all alone for this special one hour edition of WCW Saturday Night. Tony puts over how we will go through night one of the Crockett Cup and hear from the 7, yes 7 teams remaining. We will also hear from Lex Luger and Ric Flair from the Coliseum in Greensboro later on in the evening. Right now we’re going to see some of the contests from the first round and hear from the victors…

The Hart Foundation defeated Kevin Sullivan & Mike Rotundo

The Hart Foundation are shown with Bob Caudle and they talk about the Varsity Club while also putting over the Horsemen. They know what it takes to be victors and in the tournament setting you can’t hold anything back but need to go 100% from the sound of the bell!

The Horsemen put over the Harts by saying they are good competitors but the bye has given them the advantage of watching everything just a little bit closer and that is exactly what they need to put the Harts down on Night 2!

The Road Warriors vs Big Bubba & The One Man Gang w/ Jim Cornette goes to a double DQ!

Rick Rude & King Kong Bundy w/ Jimmy Hart defeated Tim Horner & Brad Armstrong

Rick Rude and Bundy are with Jimmy Hart and they put over how they are in the semifinals for a reason. They have got the speed, the power, and the expertise to win the Million Dollars and they don’t care who they will face. They say bring on the Horsemen and the Harts. There is unfinished business no matter who steps into the ring!

*COMMERCIAL*

-Tony is back in the studio and he puts over the big Football Brawl with Dr. Death and Ron Simmons. He says that this one is far, far from over between those two. He expect Simmons to reload and come at the Varsity Club with more in the future. He then leads us into the 2nd part of the bracket and we see the highlights.

The Rockers defeated Ron Bass & Black Bart

The Rockers put over the first match and talk about bringing a whole new level of speed to WCW. They talk about getting close with the Horsemen but they get a real chance against the MXE to show they should be champions!

The MXE is with Jim Cornette who is gangbusters about the Road Warriors being out and he puts over the Rockers as Teenie Boopers who are about to get popped. This is the big leagues and the US tag champions have been discarded and disrespected and now it is time for due to be paid and money to be won!

Rick Steiner & Dan Spivey defeated Tommy Rich & Dick Murdoch

Kevin Sullivan is with Steiner and Spivey. He puts over their history with athletics and working through tournaments. This will be no exception and the Varsity Club is still in the money and they won’t lose this opportunity.

Sting & Barry Windham vs Nikolai Volkoff & Boris Zhukov

Sting and Barry are on a big time high after their victory. They pump up the night 2 match with the Varsity Club. Sting says he knows Rick Steiner very well and Windham can go toe to toe with Spivey and they know what it is all about and are looking to make the most of this chance!

We then get a hype video for Night 2 of the Crockett Cup!
Arn & Tully vs The Hart Foundation
Rude & Bundy receive a Bye
The Midnight Express vs The Rockers
Rick Steiner & Danny Spivey vs Sting & Barry Windham
Plus…
Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs Butch Reed
WCW World Championship
Ric Flair defends against Lex Luger!

*COMMERCIAL*

Tony is back in the Studio as he puts over all the big action from last night but then out of nowhere… it is STAN HANSEN! Hansen jumps in the ring and grabs Schiavone!

Stan Hansen: Listen up you puke. I knew you’d be here all alone and I thought that was the perfect time to give you this! Now put this in and let all these people out here see what I have been doing with my time off!

-We see Hansen give Schiavone a video tape that he gives to the production staff. They put it in and we see the feed… it is of Stan Hansen driving and yelling at a cameraman. They pull up to a Florida Independent wrestling show. Hansen barrels his way in and the fans can’t believe he’s there. Hansen is pushing people away and then he goes in the gym. We get a blackout and then it comes back on and walking down the aisle is Dustin Rhodes… that’s Dusty’s son!

hqdefault.jpg

-Hasen is laughing on the video as as the match gets started Hansen then gets out of the stands and runs into the ring and attacks Dustin Rhodes! The crowd is going nuts as the few security guards are trying to get order. Hansen takes off his belt and starts whipping Dustin’s back! He drives the buckle into his skull and now Dustin is a bloody mess! We see more officials and wrestlers come out as Hansen is escorted out of the building and the cameraman catches it all!

*COMMERCIAL*

Tony is back and he apologizes for what we saw there. He apologizes for the blood and Stan Hansen’s behavior. He says Hansen was escorted out of the studio by police officers during our break. He hopes that we will get an update from Dusty Rhodes on Dustin soon. He says we have a couple more things to cover as he pumps up the return of Roddy Piper… we see him defeating Jimmy Snuka and then get words from Roddy Piper…

Roddy Piper: You know I came back here for a fight and I got it. I know things between me and Snuka are far from over but I know things between me and Flair are just starting. Ric… you saw it tonight… I haven’t missed a step brother. By the time you finally accept a match with me I am going to be at the top of my game and I am coming… I am coming for you… I am coming for that title and I won’t quit until I get what I want!

*COMMERCIAL*

Tony is back once again and he says he’s made a phone call to Dusty Rhodes who was irate that the attack happened and the footage was shown. He says he will be in the studio next week to address it with Jim Crockett Jr. He then pumps up the card which will be starting in minutes live from Greensboro and says there is footage from Lex Luger and Ric Flair going into that big main event tonight for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship!

Lex Luger: You know this is the biggest moment of my career. The first time I am getting my chance at Ric Flair and the World Title. Flair, I was a Horsemen. I was in charge of making sure you held that title. When I was in that role I saw everything. I saw your strengths and your weaknesses. Tonight… I am going to exploit those weaknesses and I am going to show the world what the future looks like and what it is. I am going to achieve my destiny and walk away with the title tonight Ric Flair. It is my time!

Ric Flair: Lex Luger… if you really go back and remember your time with the Horsemen you were no more than a bag man for me pal. You carried the titles of the Horsemen. I saw you always look at the World Title and I heard the rumblings that you thought it could be yours. Well Lex… tonight is the night pal but it is not your night. This is prime time… this is the Crockett Cup and pal… I am going to show you and the rest of the world why I am the World Champion and pal...there is no one who can take this title from me on my worst day but today is my best!

We then get a hype video for Night 2 of the Crockett Cup!
Arn & Tully vs The Hart Foundation
Rude & Bundy receive a Bye
The Midnight Express vs The Rockers
Rick Steiner & Danny Spivey vs Sting & Barry Windham
Plus…
Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs Butch Reed
WCW World Championship
Ric Flair defends against Lex Luger!
