Matches from March-May 1954

  • THE SHEIK vs HARRY LEWIS (03/05/1954; NWA Chicago; 00:18:07)
A review of this match from Brock Hates Wrestling.

  • RIKIDOZAN & MASAHIKO KIMURA vs BEN SHARPE & MIKE SHARPE (03/06/1954; JWA Big Competition Series; 00:03:00)

  • DANNY MCSHAIN vs GINO GARIBALDI (03/19/1954; NWA Chicago; 00:22:49)

Your mileage may vary on this one but I thought they knocked it out of the park. A really incredible mix of fast-paced mat wrestling and intense brawling with a fight over even the smallest moments of dominance. Genuinely one of my favorite matches of the 1950s. It’s kind of amazing that they could maintain this level of intensity for 20 minutes. 5***

  • DANNY MCSHAIN vs CHIEF DON EAGLE (04/05/1954; NWA Los Angeles; 00:49:16)

  • ANTONINO ROCCA vs HANS SCHMIDT (05/07/1954; NWA Chicago; 00:26:47)

  • BOB ORTON SR. vs HARRY LEWIS (05/07/1954; NWA Chicago; 00:12:45)
This match got the full video montage treatment on Reddit!

  • FRANK STOJACK vs DUTCH HEFNER (05/07/1954; NWA Chicago; 00:27:34)
Stojack played in the NFL and CFL before his wrestling career and was elected to the Tacoma, WA, city council after his wrestling career.

  • THE SHEIK & REGGIE LISOWSKI vs RUDY KAY & SKY HI LEE (05/07/1954; NWA Chicago; 00:35:57)
Reggie Lisowski would later achieve major stardom in the Midwest as Da Crusher. Funny to see him teaming with megaheel The Sheik.

  • LORD ATHOL LAYTON vs PEPE PASQUALE (05/31/1954; NWA Los Angeles; 00:05:27)
Quick squash and a rare look at Layton, who later teamed with fellow British wrestler Lord James Blears against The Sheik and Whipper Watson in a big-drawing feud in Toronto. Layton also did some color commentary in the 1960s.

  • LORD JAMES BLEARS vs LEO GARIBALDI (05/31/1954; NWA Los Angeles; 00:28:01)
Some great action here. Blears, who will remind fans of William Regal, does the Oxford leglock, which was later adapted to the figure-four leglock by The Destroyer.
