History of Pro Wrestling #35A (03:48:44)
Matches from 1950s

  • FRITZ VON ERICH vs ED MILLER (12/11/1959; NWA Upstate; Buffalo Memorial Auditorium; 00:16:56)

  • RICKI STARR vs FRITZ VON WALLICK (1959; Capitol Wrestling; 00:06:30)
Starr was an exciting wrestler to watch, especially by the standards of his time.

  • L’ANGE BLANC vs PAUL VILLARS (1959; French Catch; 00:24:03)

  • AL MASSEY vs LARRY HAMILTON (1950s; 00:12:17)
A BJJ instructor from Bradenton, FL did some amazing breakdowns of the holds in this match on his YouTube channel.

  • ANTONINO ROCCA vs BROTHER FRANK JARES (1950s; Capitol Wrestling; 00:25:23)
Some pretty sophisticated production here, to the point that it even serves as a distraction at times. Rocca’s tendency to not sell for his opponents is on full display here. Jares’ son Joe would go on to write the famous book Whatever Happened To Gorgeous George?

  • BLUE DEMON & BLACK SHADOW vs GORI GUERRERO & CAVERNARIO GALINDO (1950s; EMLL; 00:02:37)
I am fairly sure this is the oldest lucha libre footage in circulation. Fantastic to see all four of these bonafide legends, even in a short clip.

  • JOHNNY KACE vs GEORGE KRAMER (1950s; NWA Chicago; 00:17:27)
George Kramer was a star football player in college who became a police officer after leaving wrestling. He passed away in 2015, and you can read his obituary here.

  • LITTLE BEAVER vs IRISH JACKIE (1950s; NWA Los Angeles; 00:25:13)
This thread has a hilarious story about Little Beaver taking up the gigantic Don Leo Jonathan on a bet.

  • DON EVANS vs JIM CORBETT (1950s; 00:04:00)
Evans had a 30-year career in wrestling, some of it as a referee, and then became a union leader and activist after he retired.

  • JUNE BYERS vs BETTY HAWKINS (1950s; 00:04:12)
Betty Hawkins was married to Brute Bernard.

  • JUNE BYERS vs PENNY BANNER (1950s; 00:03:06)

  • LOU KLEIN vs GENE DUBUQUE (1950s; 00:08:32)
An amusing story here of a fan interaction and interview with Lou Klein where he told triumphant tales of once having a “fourteen and one-half hours” match against fellow junior heavyweight Billy Varga. The whole thing is a great read with some other tremendous kayfabe wrestlerisms.

  • RICKI STARR vs KARL VON HESS (1950s; 00:12:46)

  • THE CRUSHER vs FRANK LANE (1950s; 00:09:32)

  • JIM DOBIE vs LOU BRITTON (1950s; NWA Chicago; 00:16:15)

  • IDA MAE MARTINEZ vs TERRY MAJORS (1950s; NWA Hollywood; 00:24:34)

  • JUNE BYERS vs CORA COMBS (1950s; NWA Hollywood; 00:15:34)
