History of Pro Wrestling #40 (04:42:02)
Matches from 1960-1961

  • LUIS MARTINEZ vs NIKOLAI VOLKOFF (1960; NWA Chicago; 00:07:59)

  • RICKIE CORTEZ vs HANK LANE (1960; NWA Chicago; 00:05:55)

  • VERNE GAGNE vs HANS SCHMIDT (1960; NWA Chicago; 00:22:15)

  • JOHN TOLOS & CHRIS TOLOS vs BOB NANDOR & CHET WALLACH (1960; NWA Chicago; 00:13:33)
The teams brawl through the studio, and this is one of the first matches I can recall seeing like this. Fun stuff!

  • GREAT SCOTT vs MR. MOTO (1960; Southwest Sports; Dallas Sportatorium; 00:05:00)

  • DICK THE BRUISER vs MIKE GALLAGHER (01/06/1961; NWA Upstate; Buffalo Memorial Auditorium; 00:09:50)

  • ILIO DIPAOLO vs SATO KEOMUKA-JUDO JACKET (01/13/1961; NWA Upstate; Buffalo Memorial Auditorium; 00:08:31)

  • RENE LASARTESSE & ROBERT DURANTON vs ANDRE DRAPP & BERNARD VIGNAL (01/20/1961; French Catch; 00:41:34)
Segunda Caida review of the match.

  • FRITZ VON ERICH vs REGGIE PARKS (01/27/1961; NWA Upstate; 00:05:46)

  • MIKE SHARPE vs NEGRO GUZMAN (03/11/1961; NAWA TV Taping San Bernadino, CA; 00:09:44)
Negro Guzman also wrestled frequently as Black Guzman, and was a major rival to El Santo under that name.

  • GORILLA MONSOON vs DAVID RUHL (03/16/1961; BTW Regina, Saskatchewan; 00:10:22)
I love that the announcers explicitly state the purse in this match, because it explains so much about Gorilla’s commentary. KB’s Wrestling Reviews looked at the match for those who are interested.

  • DANNY MCSHAIN vs BULL CURRY (03/17/1961; Southwest Sports; Dallas Sportatorium; 00:02:42)

This newspaper clipping is not from the same match, but I thought it was interesting to share all the same.

  • LOU ALBANO & TONY ALTIMORE vs JACK ALLEN & RUDY JACOBS (03/25/1961; Capitol Wrestling; 00:07:32)
A fun look at Captain Lou before he became a manager, when he was part of The Sicilians, a headlining tag team, with Tony Altimore.

  • JACKY CORN vs REMY BAYLE (04/14/1961; French Catch; 00:28:22)
Segunda Caida review of the match.

  • BEARCAT WRIGHT vs MOOSE CHOLAK (04/14/1961; NWA Chicago; 00:07:33)
There is a semi-famous (and disputed) story of a locker room disagreement between these two that spilled into the ring, but this match has both acting professionally.

  • BUDDY ROGERS vs HAYSTACKS CALHOUN (04/14/1961; NWA Chicago; 00:13:32)
Calhoun was a major star at the time because of his 601-lb. frame. Fun finish here (and a standard one for Calhoun) with Rogers knocking the large Haystacks out of the ring, and Haystacks collapsing to the arena floor, breaking the bottom rope in the process. Rogers is billed as the “NWA Champion” here despite not being the NWA champion at the time, as manager Bobby Davis is even at ringside holding the United States title. It has been theorized that promoter Russ Davis did this just to get under the skin of Sam Muchnick, the legendary St. Louis promoter who often found himself at odds with Chicago promoter Davis.

  • JOHNNY GILBERT vs JACK TERRY (04/14/1961; NWA Chicago; 00:10:29)

  • JOHNNY VALENTINE vs THE CRUSHER (04/14/1961; NWA Chicago; 00:10:53)
An early look at the amazing Johnny Valentine, who takes Crusher (still billed as Crusher Lisowski) to a draw here.

  • SWEET DADDY SIKI & SAILOR ART THOMAS vs LOU ALBANO & TONY ALTIMORE (04/14/1961; NWA Chicago; 00:17:09)

  • VITTORIO APOLLO vs MIGUEL TORRES (04/14/1961; NWA Chicago; 00:05:39)
This April 14 Chicago card was nationally televised and drew 11,000 fans to the Chicago Amphitheater.

  • BUDDY ROGERS vs JOE GARCIA (04/19/1961; JCP TV; 00:03:11)
The oldest footage we have from Jim Crockett Promotions! Billy Darnell runs in after the match.

  • ANDRE DRAPP & BERNARD VIGNAL vs ROCCO LAMBAN & DR. ADOLF KAISER (04/21/1961; French Catch; 00:34:31)
Segunda Caida review of the match.
