Smoky Mountain Wrestling TV.

From the Cawood High School Gym in Harlan KY.

Taped 10/14/96 before originally airing on 10/20/96.

On Commentary: Bob Caudle Dutch Mantell.

Ring announcer: Kevin Noe

Backstage interviews: Michael St John

Caudle & Mantell welcome the audience to the show. They hype up the approaching Halloween Scream as well as today's card which will see Flash Flannigan take on a member of PG-13, the Rock n Roll Express respond to the challenge laid down by James Mitchell and in the main event, Dick Slater takes on The Punisher!

Match #1

Tarek the Great defeats Nick Dinsmore with the "Dragon Bomb".

Jim Cornette leads The Heavenly Bodies out to deafening boos. He says the idea that Smoky Mountain Wrestling would return and the first call Bert Prentice made wasn't to him is "so ridiculous it outta be criminal. Though I suppose he was too busy calling Papa John's for the 6th time." Blames the "obviously crosseyed referee" for the fact that the Thug's were able to escape with the titles and that everyday those two hold the gold, the value of those titles decreases more and more. Luckily for SMW, he has the best attorney's money can buy and thanks to them, the Bodies will step in to "rescue" the belts are Halloween Scream.

Match #2

The Rock n Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson) defeat "Tough" Tony Falk and Reggie B Fine with a double dropkick on the Falk

The Express join St John and in a fiery promo, accept the challenge to a double dog collar match at Halloween Scream. They say The Moondogs have been terrorizing the sport for nearly two decades but in Jackson TN, they intend to put the Moondogs down for good.

Match #3

Flash Flannigan defeats JC Ice by DQ when Wolfie D and Cash Flo storm the ring and attack Flanagan. A 3-1 beat down follows until Bill Dundee runs down with a chair to run the disrespectful trio off. He helps Flannigan up and they exchange insults with PG-13. Curiously there seemed to be a particularly heated exchange between Dundee and JC Ice.

Before the main event, Caudle announced that next week he'd give the rundown of the full card for Halloween Scream.

Main Event.

"The Unpredictable" Dick Slater defeats The Punisher when he countered a Powerbomb set-up into a inside cradle. Interestingly, Jake Roberts was seen observing the match from the entrance.

It quickly becomes clear this was part of the plan as the Bodies join in with Cornette even getting some shots in. Finally the face locker room clears out and they send the heels into retreat.

Trick or Treat match for the Smoky Mountain Heavyweight Title.

"Dirty" Dutch Mantell(c) defeats "Hacksaw Jim Duggan in the bloody slugfest that saw the two brawl through the arena. Leatherface helped Mantell up and handed him his title before unmasking to reveal Bull Pain.

Lots of interesting stuff happening in Fright Night! Leatherface making waves in both the opener and main event. Duggan probably isn't too pleased with that.

Tammy Fytch in SMW is going to be interesting, especially with Chris Candido. The two could climb their way to the top.

Cornette making lives difficult as usual!

Camp Cornette

At Halloween Scream Killer Kyle and The Punisher seemed to strike an alliance with the Heavenly Bodies when they interfered in the tag title match. Any doubt was removed when Cornette accompanied Kyle to the ring for his match against Pat Tanaka. After a racket shot halted a rally by Tanaka allowing Kyle to claim the win, he & Cornette joined St John for a promo where the "Louisville Lip" did what he does best, run down anybody and everybody who even slightly annoys him. He especially went after Bert Prentice "that fat carny should have stuck to selling hot dogs out of the trunk of his car." as well as the Thugs "The next time we step into the ring with them we're gonna bash in the half a brain those two share!" He finishes by saying Camp Cornette is here to take control of Smoky Mountain Wrestling and take it too heights never even imagined.

The New Church.

James Mitchell was in a foul mood and his Moondogs could sense it. They beat the fire out of two unlucky locals while Mitchell joined commentary and spent the whole time ranting about Brian Christopher embarrassing him at Halloween Scream. The Moondogs won their match in a matter of minutes but they weren't finished and the mauling continued. Eventually the Rock n Roll Express(Gibson with a large bandage from Halloween Scream) came down to prevent two televised murders and a brawl breaks out. The Express are doing well until Bruiser Bedlam ran down and leveled them both with a double clothesline. A 3-2 assault continues until Brian Christopher runs down with a chair and cleared the ring after a few hard shots. To be fair to them Mitchell's madmen still want some more and security struggles to keep them from returning to the ring. After things calm down, Caudle announces that the two sides will meet in next week's main event in a six man tag.

Bull Pain.

After he finishes George South off with the two handed chokeslam, which Mantell calls the "Pain Game",  he joins St John who asks why he got involved in the main event of Halloween Scream. Pain says he did it for the same reason he does anything in this business...MONEY. He says he's been offered a significant amount of money to run Jim Duggan out of Smoky Mountain Wrestling. St John asks who's offering the bounty and Pain tells him to mind his own business! Caudle immediately accuses Mantell who say Duggan has made enemies in every part of this business so it could be anyone.

Debbie Combs.

Women's wrestling legend Debbie Combs is brought out by Bob Caudle. She says she's been watching Smoky Mountain Wrestling from her home in Nashville and was so thrilled to see a wrestling company that valued the traditions she was brought up on. Her speech is cut off by the arrival of Chris Candido and Tammy Fytch. Candido says he's sick of hearing about tradition and that it's time to focus on the future of Smoky Mountain Wrestling, namely himself. Combs curtly tells them to hit the bricks.Fytch replies that nobody wants to listen to a "frumpy has been" like Combs when they could look at a knockout like her. Their back and forth gets progressively heated until Brian Lee comes down to stand beside Combs at which point Candido and Fytch retreat.

Thanksgiving Thunder.

The next big event is announced to be Thanksgiving Thunder, which will take place Thanksgiving night at the Knox Central High School Gymnasium in Barbourville, Kentucky.

Smoky Mountain Wrestling TV.

From the High School in Harriman TN.

Taped on 11/4/96 before airing on 11/10/96.

On Commentary: Bob Caudle & Dutch Mantell

Ring announcer: Kevin Noe

Interviews: Michael St John

During their usual intro, Caudle announces that the main event of Thanksgiving Thunder has been decided. Dutch Mantell & Jim Duggan will each captain a team of give in what's being called the first ever "Smoky Mountain Turkey Trot". If Team Duggan wins Duggan gets one last shot at the Smoky Mountain Heavyweight Title but if Team Mantell wins Duggan will leave Smoky Mountain Wrestling! And if that's not enough, whomever loses the match for their team has to put on a turkey suit and dance for the fans!

Match #1

"Sweet Music Man" Billy Joe Travis defeats Hardbody Harrison with the "Just a swingin" neckbreaker.

James Mitchell cuts an intense promo where he declares "unholy war" upon the Rock n Roll Express as well as Brian Christopher. Says he doesn't know if it will be next week, Thanksgiving Thunder or perhaps in a back alley somewhere his disciples will unleash their fury upon these "infidels" and when they do the suffering that follows will be legendary even in hell!

Match #2

The Tennessee Volunteers (Reno Riggins & Steve Dunn) defeat The Cyberpunks (Fire & Frost) with a double flapjack on Fire)

Jim Cornette joins Caudle and Mantell completely unannounced. He says he was hoping to get the Heavenly Bodies their much deserved title shot "but it seems the champions had a meeting with their parole officer and couldn't make it tonight." He also says it's an outrage that he had to come out here of his own initiative because "if Bert Prentice had the sense the good Lord gave paste, Camp Cornette would be in the main event of every show Smoky Mountain Wrestling put on." After a bit more verbal sparring with Caudle Cornette leaves but not before inviting Dutch to lunch sometime.

Match #3

"No Gimmicks Needed" Chris Candido w/Tammy Fytch defeats Mad Man Pondo with the "New Jersey Jam"

Candido and Fytch join St John for an insufferably self-congratulatory promo in which they put over how "Inevitable" it is that Candido will be the Smoky Mountain Heavyweight Champion. When St John brings up last week's altercation with Debbie Combs, Fytch warns "that old biddy" to keep her nose out of their business.

Main Event.

"Superstar Bill Dundee defeats Cash Flo by DQ when Wolfie D and JC Ice broke up a pin after Dundee hit the big man with the "Bombs away". Flash Flannigan runs in for the save and the two sides are still brawling as the show ends.

Smoky Mountain Turkey Trot

After a week of deliberation Bert Prentice gave both Dutch Mantell & Jim Duggan to the end of the broadcast to announce who they'd recruited for their teams in the SMTT. Unsurprisingly Mantell's first selection was the man he paid off at Halloween Scream, Bull Pain. He then convinced Chris Candido to join by offering him a title shot after they won. Then he reached out to his "close, personal friend" Jim Cornette and secured the services of the Punisher. Finally he announced he'd made "a deal with the devil" and his final partner would be Bruiser Bedlam.

Duggan ironically benefited from some of Mantell's choices as both Brian Lee and Brian Christopher volunteered to take on their respective rivals. Duggan ran into some difficulty filling the final two slots but a pair of unlikely volunteers stepped up in the form of Brickhouse Brown & Koko Ware. When asked why, they admitted they hadn't gotten off to as hot a start as they planned in SMW but they figured a win in the main event of one of the biggest shows of the year would be just the jump they needed.

What's gotten into Jake Roberts?

After a successful outing Dick Slater joined Michael St John for a promo where he said he came to SMW for the competition and anyone in the locker room was free to step up anytime. Midway through his speech, Jake Roberts came down and cut a cryptic promo about how you never know when a snake is gonna strike and one should always be careful what you wish for because you might get it. To emphasize his second point, he doubled Slater over with a boot then planted him with a DDT on the floor!

Tag Team Titles.

The Thugs cut a promo after their match saying Jim Cornette could bring a hundred "stooges" if it made him feel safe but they'd run through every single one of them to hold onto these titles. And as for the Heavenly Bodies, they'd get theirs at Thanksgiving Thunder in a Southern Street Fight!

The Rock n Roll Express/Moondogs

The Express send in a pre-tape saying if Mitchell and his mutts wanted to get nuts that was fine with them because they'd gone to war with the baddest around. In fact if the Moondogs wanted to use those bones so bad, how about they put those bones on poles and whoever got them done could use them as much as they wanted.

Two great teams lined up for the Turkey Trot. I really like those lineups!

I don't think anyone wants Jake Roberts to enter that "zone," so watch out!

Thanksgiving Thunder looks like it will be a ton of fun.  Thugs vs Heavenly Bodies should be a barn burner, and Moondogs vs Rock n' Roll Express in a "Bones on a poll" match is an interesting twist I did not see coming. Great job as usual with the very authentic flavor.

Smoky Mountain Wrestling presents....

image.png.d9d06b5dbbbb26cabd95914e5e3ed6d1.png

Killer Kyle w/Jim Cornette defeats American Kickboxer after Corny shoved AK off the top rope allowing Kyle to capitalize with the "Rub Out".

Badd Company (Paul Diamond & Pat Tanaka) defeat The Arkansas Hit Squad (Mark Canterbury & Dennis Knight) with a sunsetflip/dropkick combo on Canterbury.

Cash Flo handcuffed to the post.

PG-13 (Wolfie D & JC Ice) defeat "Superstar Bill Dundee & Flash Flannigan when Flo removed the pad on one of the turnbuckle allowing Ice to drive his father back first into it followed by an inside cradle.

Special Challenge match.

"The Unpredictable" Dick Slater vs Jake "The Snake" Roberts ends in a double DQ when they take turns shoving the ref during a fistfight.

Bones on a pole match.

The Rock n Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson) defeat The Moondogs (Rex & Spot) w/"Father" James Mitchell after Morton came off the top with a bone assisted clothesline on Spot.

Smoky Mountain Tag Team Title Southern Street Fight.

The Thugs (Tracy Smothers & Dirty White Boy)(c) vs The Heavenly Bodies (Tom Prichard Jimmy Del Rey) w/Jim Cornette

The two teams give us 16 minutes of back and forth action brawling throughout the building with plenty of plunder used. Cornette proves the difference maker, driving DWB to his knees with a racket shot then holding a chair in front of his face which Prichard Superkicks for the win. TITLE CHANGE!!!!

Smoky Mountain Turkey Trot. If Team Mantell wins Duggan can't challenge for the Smoky Mountain Heavyweight Title again. If Team Duggan wins he gets a title shot in any match of his choosing.

Team Mantell (Dutch Mantell, Bull Pain, Chris Candido, The Punisher & Bruiser Bedlam) w/Jim Cornette, Tammy Fytch and "Father" James Mitchell vs Team Duggan Jim Duggan, Brian Lee, Brian Christopher, Brickhouse Brown & Koko Ware)

With just under 25 minutes everyone gets a chance to shine. The various rivals have plenty of opportunity to square off (though Mantell does his damndest to avoid Duggan). At one point, Fytch tries to give her man a hand only for Debbie Comb to run down and pull her off the apron. This draws Candido and Lee over and the four fight their way to the back. During a pier-six brawl Duggan floors Bull Pain with the 3 point lariat for the win.

It looks like Pain will refuse to put the suit on but Bert Prentice takes the house mic and says if BP doesn't fulfill the stipulation he will be fired there and then! BP puts the suit on and does his dance, looking thoroughly miserable the whole time, to send the crowd home happy.

Just feels right to see you take over Smokey Mountain. You've always nailed the essence of that territory to a tee!

This was more about wrapping up my run in the 96 game. I believe LastStop still has time to re-enter the 97 game. Though if he doesn't....
