New Japan initially planned to hold it's annual New Japan Cup from March 4th to the 21st. Alas the pandemic struck and New Japan temporarily closed it's doors. After reopening, it held the tournament with an altered bracket as some talent couldn't return to Japan. As the name suggests, for this project I'll be using the original bracket planned for March 2020. With the out of the way, Let's get to it!

"Hawaiian Juggernaut" Jeff Cobb defeats "Unchained Gorilla" Togi Makabe with the "Tour of the Islands" in a absolute hoss fight.

"Stone Pitbull" Tomohiro Ishii defeats "Maori Fighter" Toa Henare with the Avalanche style Brainbuster. Henare gave a highly impressive performance and even seemed that he might pull of the upset on a number of occasions. Ishii seemed impressed and helped Henare up after the match. The Stone Pitbull keeps his end-of-show promo characteristically short, saying that 2020 will be the year he finally breaks through to the top of New Japan.

White takes the mic and tells the crowd -those who aren't already leaving in protest- that after a brief hiccup, the "Switchblade" era is set to resume and his winning this tournament is just step 1 to reclaiming his rightful place.

Good stuff! I like how the main event aftermath sets everything up for the EVIL heel turn we all loved back in 2020....

I'm glad you noticed that! YouTuber Karen Watches Wrestling had a video detailing EVIL's heel run. Sadly her channel seems to have fallen victim to Bushiroad's merciless copyright enforcement but I remember her pointing out how his turn was actually being set up before the pandemic caused NJPW to shut down for a while.

So I decided to keep that thread going because it's actually not a bad idea. Evil was the first to join Naito, a founding member of LIJ and what does he have to show for it? A Never title run that lasted as long as a cup of tea, he's a three time holder of the least valued belt in the company (the six man titles) and he's viewed as the third best Heavyweight at best within his own faction.

The turn itself made sense, but the execution was bungled and Gedo seemed to try and make him too much like Jay as a smiley cheater instead of the brute he was built to be.

I've been considering a post describing how I'd book heel EVIL and House of Torture where i'd go into more detail.

Yeah, I always liked EVIL as a brawler type, which seemed to be his style in LIJ. When he turned heel, he resorted to Bullet Club-esque tactics which weren't particularly interesting because that was something we had already seen before. I've never been big on House of Torture because of that. I think they were going to go for a Bullet Club civil war with House of Torture splitting off from the "gaijin" group, but maybe they got cold feet over that. I think Bullet Club either needs to be disbanded or broken up, so it's too bad we didn't get that outcome.
