[1995-04-08-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Toshiaki Kawada vs Akira Taue
silverwidow replied to Loss's topic in April 1995
The Carny Final is something I'd put in the "elite" tier of AJPW singles (up there with epics like 7/93 Hansen/Kobashi and 6/3/94). Best performance of Misawa's career, IMO. I wouldn't be surprised if you drop five stars on it.- 15 replies

Obviously you mean on the pecking order, not as workers. Yeah, probably the 7/96 TC change.

Nice list, Loss. Based on your earlier comments, surprised that you went with Hansen/Kobashi as MOTY over the 12/3 tag. Anyway, I noticed you left out the 7/2 AJPW trios match. Was that unintentional?

Mariko Yoshida vs. Mika Akino (ARSION, 1/17) Mariko Yoshida vs. Hiromi Yagi (ARSION, 2/18) Mariko Yoshida vs. Yumi Fukawa (ARSION, 5/4) Yoshida channels her inner Volk Han and carries these three to their best matches ever. Piles of cool matwork but what props them up to MOTYC level is Yoshida's selflessness in putting them over as threats. Akino, Yagi and Fukawa were all good workers at the time (especially amazing in Akino's case having debuted only six months earlier) - but on the surface none would have a prayer against someone of Yoshida's stature (reigning QofA champ and all that). Yoshida turns each potential mismatch on its head by selling big at the right times, creating the kind of doubt that makes for some entertaining near falls/subs. All are highly recommended, particularly the last two.

In case you're interested, Loss, here's an archived copy of CTC's review of this match/show. If you enjoyed this, wait 'til you see some of Aja's stellar 1994 stuff when she really hit her peak. The very next month she has possibly the most brutal women's match ever against Hotta.

I like OJ's outside-the-box list. Unfortunately, I haven't seen enough of the lucha to include guys like Panther on mine. If we re-did this, I'm pretty sure my top 5 would stay the same (Jumbo, Kawada, Hokuto, Liger, Jaguar). The rest of it is a crapshoot.

Hmm, don't see any mention of Takada/Backlund 12/88. This was a tremendous year for high end UWF matches and that might've been the best. Also love Takada/Yamazaki from 4 years earlier.

Loss, any list of top RINGS matches that don't include Volk Han is going to be very, very thin. Kohsaka vs. Yamamoto, 4/97 Tamura vs. Kohsaka, 6/98 These are the only must-sees to my knowledge. The latter match might take a few viewings to fully appreciate, but it's as good as it gets once you get the style.

RINGS/UWFI/BattlARTS recommendations
silverwidow replied to Loss's topic in Feedback and Suggestions
Loss, I honestly can't think of a better Han intro than 1/97 vs. Tamura. Short, constant action, establishes two differing personalities, and just beautiful wrestling in general. It was my first Han match and made me an instant fan. Their 9/96 match is even shorter but still tons of fun. Outside of the Tamura series, I really like his '96 matches with Kohsaka (particularly 11/96). If you want to throw in something against Maeda, go for 1/95 (Han was really at the top of his game around this time). It's been a long time since I watched many of these matches, but those stick out as being really, really good. -

I don't think the Albert Pujols analogy works because he's probably the best young hitter since Ted Williams; neither Joe nor Danielson would come close to that mark in the wrestling sense.

Watched Jumbo & Taue vs. Misawa & Kawada, 9/30/90. Wow. Just wow. Absolutely fantastic match loaded with twists and turns, mega heat, blood, and even a Kawada moonsault! Pretty much an all-out war for 45:00. My expectations were somewhat tempered by the fact that I hadn't seen a true classic from this tag pairing...and then they blow me away with a ****1/2 MOTYC. This stacks up quite nicely in the long list of must-sees from early 90s All Japan.

Thoughts on the following wrestling eras
silverwidow replied to Loss's topic in NMB Wrestling Archive
1994 AJPW As mentioned, the weekly TV show suffered when it got cut in half because thirty minutes is not nearly enough time to spotlight an entire company. The majority of the focus was on the main event scene, which at least fit with the idea of occasionally releasing those one match commercial tapes. Anyway, for me, '94 was sandwiched between the two greatest years in All Japan history. Sure, it had its share of classics (Carny Final, 5/94 tag titles, 6/3/94) but it wasn't bursting at the seams with great matches like '93 & '95. The 3-volume Carnival "league" tape set was pretty disappointing with maybe only one excellent match (Kobashi vs. Hansen; itself several steps down from their '93 encounters) and one pleasant surprise (Williams vs. Akiyama). Nothing else really stands out; Misawa was working with an injured neck and even his match against Kawada underwhelmed. Jumping ahead, something that should be mentioned as a "hidden gem" of sorts would be Kawada/Taue vs. Hansen/Baba from 12/10/94. I would say it's in the same ballpark as Misawa & Kobashi's great match against the legends the previous November. Loads of grumpiness as you would expect from both sides. Really fun. -
Good. It's the best All Japan singles match of the year.
