  1. The rules about how many people you can vote for always confuse me so much that I'll just list everyone that I think is HOF worthy from the ballot this time around. Hans Schmidt John Cena Rock & Roll Express Buddy Rose Gran Hamada Cien Caras Bill Apter Jerry Jarrett Don Owen I would also listen to cases for Volk Han, Kiyoshi Tamura, Atlantis, Blue Panther, Villano III and Johnny Saint.

  3. I have never heard casual wrestling fans discuss the size of smaller guys in a negative way. Granted, I don't know many casual fans, but I think it's something that people within wrestling and hardcore fans care more about than fans. Charisma and push are the two biggest factors in getting people over. I agree with Dylan that a unique look is more important than being a huge guy. Bland is a bigger issue than small. And of course wrestlers need to look like athletes, but athletes come in all shapes and sizes, so there's no reason wrestlers can't either.
  4. I love the idea of "White Lightning" being a race-based nickname. Makes me smile.

  8. The night after Halloween Havoc '97, he had a really good match with DDP.
  9. This is really odd. Has Dave's rather harmless style of reporting gotten that far under the skin of Dana that he went back for a second bite at the apple? John That reminds me of the height of petty - Vince Russo accusing Dave of being on the WWF payroll for not liking his WCW booking in 2000, with Ryder and Scherer eventually following his lead.

Correction: "I don't care to see", not "I wouldn't buy". It's only because of how they're currently pushed, not because of the size difference. If WWE had plans to shoot Bryan to the moon, great! Bring on the win!

I wouldn't buy Bryan beating Lesnar, but I would buy Lesnar vs Bryan, just to see how they pulled it off. I don't need to have questions over the outcome every time out to be interested in seeing a match.
  12. I think Hogan's charisma and look are what got him over. OJ makes the point to a higher extreme than I would. I don't mind Hogan quite as much. But to answer your question, LOOK. Being a tall blond guy with big muscles in the middle of a national fitness craze, plus his part in Rocky III. His charisma put him over the top, but those things were all hugely important.
  13. What OJ is arguing makes sense, which is that Hogan's popularity didn't have much to do with his talent.

    Cena/Lesnar

Dave's suggested finish of Liz throwing something in Hogan's eyes leading to a Savage pin at WM would have been huge. Also, Savage was so hot as champion at that point -- drawing big money -- that it didn't make sense for him to lose yet. It was too soon. So yeah, Hogan/Savage has the same problem as Brock/Cena from that perspective. Even more so, actually, since Savage was showing a lot of life at the gate.
  15. They probably were, but I don't really know where the dividing line is. It's all worked, it's all pro wrestling, so it's hard for me to make that distinction.
  16. That's what I'm hoping. He'll be well represented. I did really like the PWFG match from Florida in '92 and the one with Taka in '95, but both seemed like outliers.
  17. I saw it a while back and loved it, but I don't really remember much about it. I look forward to watching it again. It's not really a style thing, as I like plenty of mat guys. In the 90s, though, everything that people say about Dory Funk Jr. seems like it could also apply to Fujiwara. I hate saying that, because people who like Fujiwara are usually guys that recommend things I like. He's a blind spot for me for whatever reason.
  18. I'm still waiting on that great Fujiwara performance that makes me get it. I don't want to give up on him, but it just hasn't happened yet.
  19. I really struggle to say much about matches like this, because I feel like I'm repeating things others have already said. In an effort to point out things that I'm sure have been mentioned that maybe aren't talked up as much, I'll point to the post-match. The handshake from Misawa, while deserved, really surprised me because this was at such a peak in their rivalry. The look on Kawada's face couldn't be more perfect. He does respect Misawa, but he's just kissed his sister, to borrow an old Southern phrase.
  20. Well yeah, timing is part of execution. The point is that anyone can come up with a great idea, us included. But it doesn't mean much until it actually happens, and wow I sound like middle management.
  21. How it's executed.
  22. I could write a ton about this and likely will at some point, but I question why I should. This is untouchable. I have always appreciated this as a great, classic match, but never quite like this. Watching all of the 1992-1993 footage certainly helped paint a picture. I'm not sure what else to say. If you've never seen this, everything you've heard is true.
  23. Good match, but what I couldn't help but notice was how the crowd was fairly quiet for most of it. Considering that Misawa/Kawada has such an incredibly hot crowd, it just shows how they took the heat in the building to a new level. This picks up in the final few minutes. You'll see way better All Japan obviously, but I like having this on the yearbook anyway, to show what was happening on the undercard that night.
  24. "Rough around the edges" is the best way to describe this. I don't think I loved it quite as much as Phil just because I didn't care for all the restarts in the match at all. I'm in general not a big fan of that. But I do thing the exchanges were good, and the details were done really well. I like how Fujiwara is still selling Hashimoto's onslaught even as he applies the cross armbreaker. The finish seemed botched. I had to rewind it a few times to realize it wasn't. I'll come back to this at some point. I had trouble getting into it.
  25. Yeah, I guess I'm thinking more of the time period when they started using writers, like 2000 forward.
