  1. I forget where I read that this is the Misawa/Kawada of ladder matches, but that's most definitely accurate. It's the Wrestlemania X match that's the most remembered because it was the first, but this is by far the superior match, and one of the 2-3 best WWF matches of all time at worst. They play off of some of the more famous spots of the first match like Shawn's splash from the top of the ladder, the Irish whip into the ladder, the early superkick before the ladder was brought into the ring and more, where each guy has learned from the first match and has a ready-made counter. Razor's knee work on Shawn is probably the best body part work I've ever seen in a WWE ring. Who is this Scott Hall and why didn't we see more of him? Fabulous match. The best U.S. match of the year and on par with all but a few matches anywhere in the world. The botched finish doesn't take a thing away from this because they cover for it nicely enough.
  2. I can't watch this match again. Never really enjoyed it all that much. I take back my embarrassing "this crowd sucks" rant from a few years ago, as I get the moment, but it's just not a match I enjoy or care to see again. It needed to be here though, as the denouement of the Guerrero/Malenko feud in ECW.
  3. Classic Flair promo hyping Fall Brawl, talking about his history with Arn Anderson and how the Vader match was the biggest match of his career, and now it's this. He mentions seeing guys like Luger, Windham and Tully come and go, but they've been a constant. They've been around the world together, winning matches, breaking hearts and hitting bars. Flair says he has to prove to Arn why he's always been where he's been, and Arn has always been where he's been. I love this.
  4. Sit down interview with Arn Anderson about the falling out with Flair. Tremendous. Arn hated not being able to help Flair anymore, but felt like he was being used and that Flair was taking him for granted, so he had to prove a point. He tells Flair he will come out of Fall Brawl with either his respect or his backside in his hip pocket.
  5. Loser Leaves Town match from Mid South Coliseum. Nice action, but a short match. Landell hits Dundee with a chain three minutes in and gets a pin, but Frank Morrell fills the ref in on what happened and gets the decision reversed. Landell is out of town. Back at the studio, HEEL SMW COMMISSIONER BOB ARMSTRONG IS IN MEMPHIS! This can only be amazing. Bob is being his usual awesome self before Bill Dundee interrupts him to take exception to Bob Armstrong taking exception to his win. After all the exception taking, Bob Armstrong puts his hat on backwards and says "Let me put my talkin' cap on" and you know things are heating up. Dundee pulls his tie and is ready to fight, and it's A CLIP-ON!!! Bob Armstrong says YOU DO NOT PULL MY OFFICIAL COMMISSIONER'S TIE and Jesse James Armstrong attacks Dundee from behind until PG-13 make the save. Road Dogg shows lots of fire here and this is a great beatdown. Plus, BOB ARMSTRONG IS IN THE USWA!
  6. This was a war. Taka brings pro wrestling selling to PWFG, which is great, and I love Fujiwara sneaking in jabs to Taka's ribs during takedowns. The oneupsmanship element is pretty strong, and this match is pretty stiff. Taka does a tremendous comeback on Fujiwara near the end, which makes for a great visual because of the size difference and how Fujiwara sells Taka's shots. Short match, but not a wasted moment, and this feels like the appropriate predecessor to BattlARTS. Probably one of the best sub-10 minute matches I've ever seen.
  7. I don't think so. Luger showed up at Summerslam. I'm pretty sure the clip of him getting involved in the main event was played on the Saturday morning TV too.
  8. Beautiful match. Some outstanding matwork in the early part of the match, which I attribute to Caras bringing the lucha. The match built in a classic way from spot to spot and was really well done. I wish I had more to say about it because this is a great match that deserves a full review. All I can really say is that I enjoyed it and found the matwork to be surprising. I thought this being M-Pro and Sasuke, it would be a pretty highspot heavy match. At the end, there's no shortage of them, but most of this is just really well done unique counters and exchanges on the mat. See this.
  9. Clipped because that's how it aired on TV. Good action. Mikey gets the big upset in a non-title match. Sandman seems to be hesitant to agree to the pre-match stip, and Woman is making him hold up his end of the agreement. Mikey kisses Woman when she tries to put her hands on him to a huge pop, which causes Sandman to attack him from behind and brutally hit him with the cane. Woman goes WAAAYYY over the top with the orgasmic sounds this time. The ref finally intervenes and tells Sandman if he hits Mikey one more time, he'll lose the belt. Woman makes him stop when the ref gives that ultimatum. Another great angle.
  10. To start this off, Diesel is out for his interview. They show a clip from the previous week of Diesel vs Mo where Shawn runs to Diesel's aid after Mabel runs in. Diesel promises a win at Summerslam, and Davey Boy Smith comes out. Davey Boy mentions that Lex Luger (Wow, first time I've heard that name in a while) had a medical emergency and can't be there tonight, so he's free, and he offers to team with Diesel. Diesel looks positively huge standing next to Davey Boy. Anyway, Diesel accepts his offer. Not a good move, as Davey Boy turns heel on Diesel -- the first time he was ever a heel, at least on a national stage -- and it's quickly obvious he's aligned with Cornette. MoM and Davey Boy put the beat down on Diesel. We get a post-match promo from all the gloating heels.
  11. Now Goldust is on location in front of the Hollywood sign, still in the original and odd getup. He mentions Shawn Michaels this time.
  12. Does anyone know the date of the RAW where Vince announced that Randy Savage was gone?
  13. *bump* So this set will be next. We hoped to do 1990 next, but there is so much USWA to go through (for both Memphis and Dallas) that we want to give it the TLC it deserves. It will take some time to walk through the available footage and pick out the best stuff. We are in a better position to release 1994 next. So if you have any recommendations you haven't made yet, we ask that you make them here. After 1994, we'll go back to 1990. If you have any recommendations to add, please add them by the end of the year. Thanks!
  14. My bias stems from: (a) Him not having good matches without liberal use of props and outside interference ( Him not giving good promos © Him being surrounded by people who had a connection with the crowd who were much better in the ring and on interviews, and siphoning all of his heat off of them to get over while LITERALLY just sitting there (Richards, Cactus, etc) (d) The promotional machine in ECW being behind him instead of Stevie Richards, who was more talented and a better prospect in every way (e) Him rarely getting his comeuppance (f) His gimmick being too time-specific and not really translating outside of that (g) Him having a positive reputation in many circles, despite A through F (h) Frustration that A through G isn't more obvious to some people
  15. Saying "workrate" is the end all/be all and "match quality" is the end all/be all in ranking the greats is two different things.
  16. DOMINATE is the word this week. He predicts King Mabel will win the title from Diesel at Summerslam.
  17. The finals of the King of the Death Matches tournament. Both are already pretty bandaged up from previous matches. Not a good match, but I didn't expect one either. Famous for the incredibly anti-climatic closing with an explosion that made the crowd start booing. This sees Cactus come back in to try to salvage something.
  18. SULLIVAN! This video introduces Meng to the Dungeon of Doom. He is wearing some crazy head thing I've never seen him in before.
  19. "I was two hours late to a building I've been in dozens of times before because I couldn't remember the way." This appears to be his first post-heel turn promo before he changed his style. Yet another person doing all the work to get Raven over.
  20. Sensational match. Of all of the NJ heavies matches I have watched on the yearbooks, this is the best one. It's a funny comment to make about a match that goes nearly a half hour, but I think they could have easily gotten another 15-20 minutes out of this match. This seemed to be solidifying Muto as a guy who they were going to be building around, at least for a while. He defeated Hashimoto for the IWGP title in May, and beat him again here to win the G1. The matwork in the opening minutes is outstanding, and the whole match is built around Muto being ready for this moment. There's an early battle over leg holds that Hashimoto wins early, and Muto ends up winning out. So Hashimoto switches to the arm, and wins that battle early, then Muto wins that exchange in the end too, and goes back to the leg. While Muto is bleeding, they didn't go the cheap route of deliberately reopening his cut and building the match around that. I liked that choice, because it distinguished this match from the others in the G1. Hashimoto hits a brainbuster close to the end and seems to take the worst of it himself -- not sure if that was a botched spot or what, but they milked so much drama from it and it fit the match so nicely that even if it was botched, they covered nicely. They each try a dive from the top rope and each miss, and after a few more hot exchanges, Muto wins the match after two moonsaults. Not only does he win, but the match was built in a way where it was clear that he deserved to win. This is the best match I've ever seen from either guy, which is pretty high praise. The only matches that I can say are definitively better are the Misawa/Taue Carny final and the 6/9 tag. It's at least as good as everything else.
  21. Today's word is execution. Shane Douglas's handwriting sucks. That's the most notable thing about this. This focuses on Bret's failure to hook the leg in his matches. Thrilling as it sounds. Shane's overly slow talking is terrible. If Goldust was one of Vince's greatest ideas, Dean Douglas was one of his worst.
  22. We see Goldust for the first time. His wig isn't the platinum blonde wig we have gotten used to. Instead, it's gold. His face paint is also different, and he's wearing a gold tuxedo instead of his normal outfit. He's against a green screen of the Warner Bros. studio. I like his promo, but they would get better as he got more comfortable in the act. One of Vince's greatest ideas.
  23. Just a clip. "KILL THE CLOWN!", the crowd shouts in unison as Mercy takes Doink down with a sleeper. Funny! The crowd pops way bigger for his win than they have any business doing, which makes this fun.
  24. Joined in progress. This was fantastic! Muto's cut from the Chono match is reopened. This is really cool because Flair is playing the total heel instead of his normal, more subdued Japan act. Muto misses a moonsault and clinches his knee, just giving Flair a huge opening. But Flair decides to work the cut instead, which I think worked out way better. Flair throws some outstanding punches and eventually gets back to the knee before locking in the figure four. Muto's blood covered face while selling the figure four is quite the visual. I love how into the reversal the New Japan crowd gets -- yet another example of '95 New Japan reminding me of JCP. Excellent, excellent, excellent. I don't know how the whole match will look, but now I want to see it, because this was lots of fun, and Flair looked great! I kept looking for Flair scooting in for Muto's moonsault like jdw has talked about, but saw no such thing.
  25. Tremendous match for both guys. Not much to say except that they are hitting each other really hard for 15 minutes or so and there's a really nice back and forth ebb and flow. Worth checking out.
