No, but I have heard good things about it. I would be interested in seeing other clean, straightforward matches like this, even ones that aren't as good as this one. I know the '94 match has been praised, but I would imagine there are some other good matches like this on week-to-week TV, right? They don't just do mat-based matches every couple of years like this, do they?

Someone recommended it, but I have no idea who. I have no concept of the history of Pancrase or anything because it just never interested me, but I never would have talked about it in those terms had I known it was a shoot. Good question. Is any Pancrase worked?

The reason I say that is because the wrestling was pretty basic for the most part, but looked really good and seemed like the pinnacle of the style. All the two counts were my favorite part of the match (not nearfalls necessarily, but just attempts at wrestling the other guy to the mat for a pinfall and getting a normal two count). That's how Flair and Steamboat typically work their matches. What other Dandy matches from this time period are this mat-based, because I want to see them all?

[1996-11-24-WCW-World War III] Rey Misterio Jr vs Ultimo Dragon
Loss replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
I want to watch this again just so I can point out specifically all the offense Rey does get in. The match felt pretty typical in layout to me: early standoffs, followed by Dragon in control, followed by both guys trading moves and attempting pins, with Dragon finally winning it.- 18 replies

Another super-heated brawl, as they continue to build to the triangle match. Another MOTYC-level match. November was an incredibly loaded month. They focus primarily on Dandy and Santo here, and while Santo is still the aggressor, Dandy hangs with him way more this time than before. Casas kinda picks his spots and comes in at select times, and I'm sure there's a story there that I'm just not getting. Anyway, they do get a measure of revenge here. That said, can someone explain to me why Dandy and Casas were in a triangle match? I understand they both had issues with Santo, but what issue did they have with each other to necessitate that? Why didn't they just build to two singles matches?

Amazing that these guys can have a match this great the week before the tag league final, and still not be out of new stuff to do when they get there. I knew I'd like this match, as I have liked all the matches between these teams. I didn't expect for this to be one of best matches of the year in its own right. This is more visceral and all-action than the other matches between these teams earlier in the year, which is really saying something. And I know the tag league final will take the top spot, but other than that, this is my favorite match between the teams.

It took Bischoff a little while to become a strong TV performer, but he's pretty decent at first. He says everyone in WCW has 30 days to convert their contracts to NWO contracts. The American Males come down to the ring. Bagwell takes Bischoff's offer and they beat up Scotty Riggs. Say it ain't so!

[1996-11-25-WWF-Raw] Interview: Shawn Michaels & Jose Lothario
Loss replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
Shawn does an incredibly obnoxious, whiny promo, screaming way too much, which he obviously isn't comfortable with. Wow, between Bret and Shawn, the WWF's top babyfaces were a real drag around this time. No wonder Austin got as over as he did.- 11 replies
-
We get the last few minutes. It's Rey, Regal, Jarrett, DDP, Eddy and Luger versus the NWO and it's really, really good. Regal actually has an awesome babyface moment going to town on the NWO. Then, it's Luger versus the NWO and Luger overcomes the odds briefly before The Giant finally eliminates him. They did a great job on so many things around this time. Piper was Hogan's immediate opponent. But Luger was someone they wanted as a Hogan challenger the next year, so they were building him up. And Giant was eventually going to leave the NWO and challenge Hogan, so they were setting that up too. The whole story of Luger as an unlikely hero was one of my favorite things about this time. He lost his best friend because of a mistake he made, and he had to step up and lead, and he did. He crashed immediately after the five-day title run the next year, but this was a good time period for him.

[1996-11-24-WCW-World War III] Hulk Hogan vs Roddy Piper Contract Signing
Loss replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
Hogan should be studied here. He was amazing. This was also really well laid out, with nice little touches like no one in the NWO laying any blows in on Piper except Hogan. Everyone laid out Savage all the time, so that was a nice way to make him seem like a tougher challenger. Then, Piper occasionally breaks free of the NWO restraining him to attack Hogan. Another nice touch. They really did a good job hyping the Hogan/Piper match, and Hogan was doing the best interviews of his career at this point.- 8 replies

[1996-11-24-WCW-World War III] Rey Misterio Jr vs Ultimo Dragon
Loss replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
Ok, this match is still awesome. I don't understand the "it's too one-sided" complaints, because I thought it was laid out really well. This really shows the potential of the cruiserweight division. I know this was jdw's favorite WCW match of the 90s, but it seems like quite a few people have been down on it in recent years for being an extended squash. Watching it again, I don't get that at all. My final verdict: Rey matches during this time period that aren't against Psicosis or Juventud have criticisms that I don't agree with at all.- 18 replies

Agreed. Even if some of these matches don't hold up in full, it opens up the floor for an interesting discussion about whether JIP skewed how good matches seemed to be.

Blame Vince. Michael Cole's job isn't to make original observations.
-
I could see Rock and HHH having one more money match, but that's a moot point, as HHH is about to finish up. Rock vs CM Punk would be fantastic, but I think they'd need to build Punk up for a year before that match, not doing any jobs at all and winning decisively, and getting a ton of promo time, and they don't seem willing to make that type of investment in anyone at all anymore, which is why they are in the shape they're in. Rock vs Orton might have meant something at one point, but Orton's stock has plummeted since he turned babyface.
-
There aren't very many guys Rock could work with because they don't have any genuine stars anymore. Rock vs Cena would be huge. I'm not sure what other matches they could build to that would be worth his time.
-
I'm assuming this is where Santo actually turned? He comes out incognito before revealing himself and joining Scorpio and Salvaje. This is a fantastic, super-heated match with lots of rudo aggression. Santo just steps into this role like he's been doing it all his life. He takes no offense at all from the technicos for the first two falls, which is a smart way to build heat for future matches. Casas is a bloody mess and his selling of this mass destruction is off the charts. When Dandy gets a bulldog on Santo in the third fall, the building explodes. These two have some great exchanges and we get the most awesome War Games-like babyface comeback toward the end, with Casas getting a second wind while Dandy tries to rip Santo's mask off. But Casas' comeback gets cut off, and I can just hear Jim Ross freaking out in the back of my head, as this has definite elements of old school NWA or Mid South. Santo does a hate-filled promo to cap things off holding Casas hostage and continuing to destroy him. MOTYC. The first time I've seen this. I've seen the rematch a week later before, and I'm excited to watch it again now having seen this.

Lots of bland matwork early on, and probably the least of the tag league matches so far. It gets really, really good in the final stretch, but there is too much time wasting at the beginning. This is a match that is meant to be seen JIP.

As good as the Doc/Ace vs Misawa/Akiyama match was a few days before this, this is much better. Kawada gets destroyed and sells it beautifully, as they completely decimate his knee. There is probably better Kawada having his knee destroyed, but that's always good. This match also built heat better. That match had a hotter crowd to begin with, whereas Kawada had to sell his ass off to wake the crowd up here, which they did. Everyone is good in this match, but this is the Kawada show.

It is. This working is really on John Cena. He may need to take more control if he's given bad material and go with his instincts. I do think Cena could keep up with Rock, but not the way he's currently portrayed.

The big angle. Eric Bischoff comes out and says they've been trying to reach Piper through all of his contacts and have had no luck, but they would keep trying. Piper comes out to set the record straight and calls Eric Bischoff a liar. He asks if the road going to his house was straight or winding, if he flew first class or coach, what airline he used. Good stuff. The NWO then comes out to restrain Piper and Hogan gives Bischoff a hug. Eric Bischoff has joined the NWO. Piper tries to lunge at Hogan while the ring is filled with the NWO guys and security, which is quite the visual. The show closes with Piper saying he'll be at World War 3. I guess you could call this the point when the NWO started getting a little big, even if in the short-term, it was a well put-together angle.

Hogan does an awesome promo making Bischoff look at the camera and say Hogan is a bigger icon and bigger star than Piper, and that he's afraid of Piper and that if they both stood on their bank accounts that Hogan would make Piper look like a midget. Then, DDP comes out for an interview and is quickly interrupted by Hall and Nash, this time with Syxx and Giant out too. Nash quotes 2001: A Space Odyssey as the NWO makes elusive comments about how Page obviously doesn't know what's about to happen tonight, which is an interesting setup for the big angle later in the show.- 8 replies

[1996-11-18-WCW-Nitro] The Outsiders and Faces of Fear
Loss replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
This starts with the aftermath of a High Voltage vs Public Enemy match. Hall and Nash had come in and laid everyone out. Nash then does a promo to scare the hell out of Tony Schiavone and call him for laughing the previous week, which I thought was a great bit of attention to detail. Believe it or not, Hall does a good heel promo talking about how he's always heard how tough the Faces of Fear are and that he and Nash want to see just how tough they are. A Hall and Nash promo putting over their opponents, imagine that? Then, the Outsiders and Faces of Fear brawl to the back.- 7 replies
