We get the clip from RAW - Cornette gets in his face after the show is over in the backstage area. Giant Silva attacks Lawler from behind and chokes him out before repeatedly slamming a door on him while he's against a wall. We're supposed to think that ended Lawler's career? Really? They're selling it hardcore though, as Lawler has a cast on his arm and he's wearing a neckbrace as he enters the studio in his wheelchair. Hales comes out while Lawler is doing his goodbye promo to point out that he has no sympathy for Lawler, says he's a joke with a huge ego that didn't know his time was over and finally kicks Lawler out of the studio. Lawler will have none of it and jumps out of the wheelchair, exposing that he has a fake cast on and that he doesn't need the neckbrace. He drags Hales in the ring and strips him to his boxers. This was fantastic once again, but it's still hard for me to get past the Austin-McMahon copying.

Jerry Lawler's career is over forever according to Randy Hales, and Hales is here to offer his sincere condolences. He has arranged for Lawler to come to the studio one last time to say goodbye to the few fans he has left. He references something that happened after Monday Night RAW.

Malenko demands that Arn Anderson confront him face to face. Arn comes out with Mongo in tow. Can you believe the original plan for this stuff was to reunite the Four Horsemen without Flair? A "We Want Flair" chant breaks out right away that they try to ignore. Dean says Benoit has been trying to contact Arn to no avail. Malenko tells a story about getting to know Arn when he toured New Japan and credits Arn with getting him his job in WCW. Eventually, he asks him to rebuild the Horsemen. Arn cuts him off and says you don't join the Horsemen, you are chosen. Arn does an awesome promo here, one of the best anyone has done so far this year. He tells amazing personal stories of the sacrifices he made to be a wrestler for ten years and takes offense to anyone saying his heart isn't in wrestling anymore. He says if Dean has any humanity, he'll just let it be and walks off. This segment was tremendous.

Hall explains that he went through a personal crisis and Hogan and Bischoff were the ones who gave him money when he needed it, not Nash. This is okay.
-
Kevin Nash is alive! Gotta give Hogan credit. Nash was making noise about Hogan and he gets ousted from the NWO and removed from the main event scene just like that, put in a feud no one wanted to see. This is a really strong heartfelt interview from Nash, but it's hard to get hyped up for this feud. They are much better on the same side.

New Jack does a promo on the subway. I see stuff like this and think about what ECW probably went through to sneak a camera in these types of settings. He talks way too long.

This is the last half of a 28-minute match, just as it was aired on TV. Ditch mentioned in the match recommendations process that the first half is pretty dull and aimless, and that we didn't need this in full. I suspect I'll like it and want to pick it up now to see for myself. What we do get here is awesome, with Kanemoto doing some nice work on Liger's knee with Liger making a nice limping comeback. I'll hold off on ranking this for now but I want to revisit.

Gene asks Bagwell if he's still in the NWO. Bagwell feels like he needs to go his own way and wants to face Rick Steiner head on. Hogan is out quickly before Bagwell can say anything to chastise him for all the "babyface crap" he's been spewing. He ends up dumping over his wheelchair. This is another great segment to set up a big babyface comeback for Bagwell, even if it was primarily to get Hogan over.

JJ brings out new cruiserweight champion Rey Misterio Jr. Jericho is out to ruin the moment. He refers to page 257 of the WCW rulebook. Because Malenko was suspended and was in the building, that is against the rulebook which means the decision is null and void and Jericho is the rightful cruiserweight champion! He gets the belt back. Malenko comes out and wants to get his hands on Jericho and Jericho has fun taunting everyone in sight. Jericho says Rey vs Dean can have a #1 Contender's Match tonight and he'll just hang out in the back and polish his belt. Jericho knows the rulebook!

Val Venis comes out to insincerely apologize to Kaientai for targeting Yamaguchi's wife. He cuts to a clip of his latest video - Land of the Rising Venis, and Yamaguchi's wife (and underage model) is the co-star!

Such a weird dynamic when the crowd turns on the main event of the biggest drawing pay-per-view in WCW history. Rodman can do impressive looking things for a few seconds at a time but he can't sustain it. I could write several paragraphs on everything wrong with this match but I don't think I have it in me. Malone being put in a position to sell as FIP makes no sense. Starting the match with Rodman and Malone when that's the pairing everyone wants to see makes no sense. This match just goes and goes and goes and I don't understand that approach. They did a perfectly fun/fine sub-15 minute match the year before. There were parts of this that were okay and I think they could have edited this down to something okay. But it fell really flat.

Last few minutes. Rey made his big return, much to Jericho's surprise. Jericho works over the knee with a chair, this being a No DQ match. Lots of blown stuff. Malenko comes out and Jericho is distracted momentarily, which is enough for Rey to beat Jericho to win the cruiserweight title.

Chavo dedicates the match with Stevie Ray to Eddy Guerrero, who he calls his favorite wrestler. Chavo submits right away to save himself for Eddy. Last few minutes of Eddy vs Chavo. Eddy wins so Chavo gets his head shaved. Eddy is about to shave him when Chavo takes the clippers and does the job himself, freaking Eddy out. This all got over like a fart in church with this crowd.

Lawler comes out bandaged up with torn clothes all pissed off looking for Randy Hales and Giant Silva. We see Lawler in the production booth harassing employees looking for him. He roughs up an employee in the process. This "Stone Cold" act doesn't feel very Jerry Lawler at all. Lawler finally reveals that Randy Hales told him he had to be at TV today and as he was driving to the building, Giant Silva attacked him in his driveway. In the parking lot, Stacy blocks Hales' car until Lawler can come out there so Lawler takes a bat to his windshield. I'm torn on this - it was a great segment and Lawler gave an awesome promo, but the Steve Austin copying is unavoidable and seems really manipulative and unnatural.

The Dudleys have a surprise partner against Dreamer and Sandman. "Desperado" starts and people think Terry Funk is coming out, but no Terry can be found. Bubba Ray says "Psyche!" (in 1998) and calls everyone dumb marks for thinking he'd be there before going into a profanity-laced tirade. The intros go on forever, although the Beulah reference raised an eyebrow. I really hate this feud and I'm sick of these guys, but I do like Shane Douglas on color.

Chavo has challenged Eddy to a hair vs hair match at Bash at the Beach. Eddy congratulates Goldberg on winning the title, which is a nice touch since someone in the promotion seems to remember that it's WCW vs NWO. Then he gets into selling the match with Chavo at the Bash. "Nobody likes bald people, Chavo. Especially not Uncle Eddy."

Austin and Vince are both on commentary and do a lot of really entertaining arguing. Undertaker doesn't come out when his music starts, so Vince makes the announcer call him a chickenshit. Therefore, Kane and Mankind will wrestle one-on-one to see who will be the number one contender. This will be No Holds Barred and falls count anywhere. Mankind refuses to fight his friend Kane. Kane grabs a chair and Vince wants him to level Austin but he lays out Mankind, who is just sitting there. I'm guessing he's still unable to work after King of the Ring. He quickly wins the match - but it's not Kane after all. He takes off the mask and he's the Undertaker! Nice swerve.

Second occurrence of blackface this year in the WWF, and the Mark Henry part of this is uncomfortably racist. This hasn't aged well, although Jason Sensation is the exception to that and is awesomely talented.

Is part of the problem that the WWF had two color guys and no play-by-play guy on many shows?

Goldberg with an even bigger entrance this time around. The story goes that Hogan knew Turner execs would be at this show and he wanted them to see the crowd and see him in the main event and there you go. Regardless of his motivations, he did the honors and was a total pro. Hennig comes out and DDP and Malone cut him off again. Hennig eats a Diamond Cutter from Malone on the floor, then Goldberg does the spear and jackhammer to take the title! One of the biggest pops in wrestling history.

That was how I understood the defense of him in this thread - that he was entertaining and credible because he would call shitty matches what they were. Did I misunderstand?

Hall is looking rough. Goldberg gets a phenomenal entrance. Incredible heat for this, but it's not good at all. It looks like Hall is out to make him look bad, but they're lucky Goldberg is bulletproof at this point. I understand Hall is the biggest name he has taken on so far, but I think this was dragged out too long. Good stuff when Hall calls for the NWO to come out and Page and Malone get them from behind with chairs.

Bagwell comes bag and there's Judy! They had a chance to make a huge babyface here and dropped the ball. Check out all the signs! They bring him out to do a heartfelt promo, but they used the NWO music. Gene managed to be inappropriate but this was all a little exploitative anyway, so it is what it is.

Scott Hall arrives to start us out, putting his beer down in his limo in his first show back from rehab. Keep in mind that Bischoff is standing right there. Jericho talks about his upcoming match with Rey at Bash at the Beach. JJ Dillon is out to say that's not going to fly with the famed Executive Committee. Malenko shows up quickly and has to be restrained. Dillon claims there can be no physical contact between Malenko and Jericho before Bash at the Beach or their No DQ match is off. Jericho decides to take advantage of this and starts egging him on. They close up with Jericho seemed poised to say something nice to Dean, only to point out that his dad was on the road all the time and that he and his brother look nothing alike. Dean snaps and attacks Jericho so it looks like the match is off. Great stuff. This feud has gotten hot.
