Atlantic Grand-Prix Wrestling From 1997 Featuring Edge & Christian known then as The Suicide Blondes of Sexton Hardcastle & Christian Cage wrestling against Rick "The Model" Martell and Don Casablancas (Don Callis) known as The Super Models This is at least interesting historically. The Maritimes territory had been re-started after seven years and was like an early developmental territory as wrestlers being trained by Bret Hart and Leo Burke toured here. Martel and Callis were originally courted to be brought into WWF as a team but WCW got wind of it and brought in Martel solo just to mess with WWF (I recall that they did the same with Chris Adams). Callis ended up going to WWF as The Jackyl later that year. Edge and Christian did do WWF training camps with Dory Funk Jr in 1997 and I remember seeing a WWF magazine article on camp stand-outs Adam Copeland and Sean Morely (Val Venis). Both were in WWF by the end of 1998. The match itself is slow at times but worth checking out I would say.

As far as Canadian footage I am watching, I would say that the International Wrestling comes off similar to the Texas set as far the action in the ring and hot crowds. The Maritimes footage is more like Memphis-style stuido wrestling. Thanks for the feedback on the shows guys.

Bravo in Montreal really is a pretty different deal from anything you would have seen of him in WWE. He was a better worker and also had the ethnic following, making him more charismatic in that setting. Before he bulked up as much as he did for WWE he was still big but could actually do some flying, including a dropkick given to Samu who was sitting on the top buckle.

Thanks for listening Grimmas. Dino Bravo in the 80s as IW champion had feuds over the title with both King Tonga and Samu (later of the SST). I have seen some of the Samu matches and they were pretty good. I know you said you're moving to Toronto, but what area of Canada are you moving from? I've done a lot of Maritimes research.

I sent it to Court, I've been in touch with him recently as I was looking up information on his ancestor Theobaud Bauer.

Please listen to Episode 23 of the Wrestling Culture Podcast as Dylan and I are joined by a great man in Pat Laprade to talk the history of Montreal wrestling. It may be a long episode but I feel it is the best we've done. Pat's book "Mad-dogs, Midgets and Screw-Jobs" co-authored with Bertrand Hébert will be released by ECW Press in February 2013 and looks to be a must-read. Wrestling Culture Episode 23

Just started this today, fantastic stuff. It was actually a gift from my student the day she finished her placement, this is what stood out to her when she went to look for a recent wrestling book. -
Dylan and I talk about the state of the indies in relation to WWE and TNA signing indie talent and what possibilities and directions are available. Wrestling Culture Episode 22

By the way Dylan, Richards vs Elgin is my # 1 so far for this year. Discuss. Actually I would like to hear what you liked about the match. I know you thought it was one of the better ROH matches in years and I'm curious why you rate it at the top of the heap now. I second this. My thoughts are at DVDVR but to state again... what a stupid fucking match. Perhaps I will re-watch it again to be able to write my thoughts before taking the big step of defending it here. What do you like about the match? Was it the big moves down the stretch that I listed (all no-sold)? Was it the kicks of death? Was it the crwod reaction the last 5 minutes? The stupid transitions or lack there of? Can I weigh in, because I *liked* that match (as much as I can like any Davey Richards match) and I know exactly why: It made Michael Elgin a star and I believably thought that he was going to defeat Davey Richards and win the World Title. It made me care about the outcome. It made me care about one of the people in the match (so that I was actively rooting for him) and root against another. It drew me in and made me express emotion. It made me care about who had the belt. The moves themselves were pretty business-exposing but wrestling is never really about which moves are used, and never has been, right? I mean, it's dumb because they have raised the bar so high and killed near-falls but by the end of that match, I was standing up and actually counting along with pinfalls thinking that Richards was beat. So that's why. I will say that I find it interesting that I hate Davey Richards because of all of the Smark stuff, like the no-selling and killing of moves...and that made him the heel to me, which caused me to become emotionally invested in the match. Weird how that worked. Also I had more problem with Davey Richards' "Hey guys, glad that match is over. By the way, he's a promo because I'm okay" than I did about anything in the match. That promo at the end was even worse than the match. You just watched a five star match!!! Go fuck yourself. Actually, I really did like the big moves down the stretch and the crowd reaction the last five mintues. As was also mentioned, I do think this match made Elgin a star and a lot of people came out of watching the match feeling that way. I have watched him for years and always liked him but he is one of my favorites at this point. I thought the pace and building of the match was really great as was the intensity. I thouht Elgin brought in a lot of new offense that is not really stuff you have seen a lot from in ROH including a spinning backfast, enzuiguri and a crossface. I do see a lot of the criticisms that have been made of Richards trying to make his matches too long (both Eddie Edwards title matches from 2011 and the Edwards/Cole vs Richards/O'Reilly match from February) but thought he cut himself down to just the right amount in this match. And it really did feel like Elgin was going to win the match even though it didn't seem realistic for him to do so given plans for Steen vs Richards. This was a great match in the style of ROH which is a style I do enjoy.

As Co-Captain of the No Class Bobby Bass Fan Club with Dylan, I thought I would post this clip where you can see his interview 1:40 in: And since Rip Rogers came up, here is a match of them teaming in the Maritimes in 1990 with a promo afterward:

OK, it's been a long day because I at first read this as you saying that you were surprised we didn't cover the Samoans in the Black history ep and I was going to discuss ethnic differences until I realized I was just dumb in how I read it. Ya, the two shows in a row at about 1 1/2 hours I got a call from my parents and due to circumstances I rarely get a chance to talk to Mom so I felt I should take the call. But yes, a Families V2 would be appropriate.
